Investigation of human values effect on high school students’ physics achievements

The values define the things that a person considers important. Values, which are directly related to feelings, opinions and behavior levels of individuals, are very important for their personal improvement. This research was done to investigate the human values (responsibility, friendship, peaceful, respect, honesty and tolerance) and its relationship between the physics achievements of high-school students. The research was carried out with 303 students from three public high schools in the center of Konya in the academic year of 2017-2018. The 46.2% (f=140) of the participants were male students, while 53.8% (f=163) of participants were female. The data of this research were obtained by the "Human Values Scale (HVS)" developed by Dilmaç (2007). The obtained data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, correlation and independent samples-t test in SPSS 20 program. The findings have figured out that there wasn’t a significant difference between male and female students' mean scores of responsibility, friendship, peace, respect, honesty and tolerance subscales scores. Also, a positive correlation between the achievement of physics course and responsibility sub-dimension of human values scale, while there was not found any significant relationship between the achievement of physics with friendship, peace, respect, honesty and tolerance sub-dimensions, respectively.

Promotion of novel plant-based dishes among older consumers using the ‘dish of the day’ as a nudging strategy in 4 EU countries

A quasi-experimental study was designed to promote novel plant-based dishes using the nudging strategy ‘dish of the day’ among older consumers in Denmark, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Participants were presented with three dish options: veggie balls, meatballs and fish cakes. In the intervention situation, participants were informed that the ‘dish of the day’ was the novel plant-based ‘veggie balls’. Thereafter, participants were asked to choose one of three dishes to intake and then fill a questionnaire. No statistically significant difference in dish choice was found between the control group and intervention group in the four countries. Males were less likely to choose the plant-based dish when compared with the females. Participants from the United Kingdom and Denmark were more likely to choose the plant-based dish when compared with participants from France. High scores of security dimension from the Human Value Scale was negatively associated with choice of plant-based dish, while high scores of the sensory dimension from Food Choice Questionnaire and high scores of the universalism dimension from Human Values Scale were positively related to the choice of the plant-based dish. The ‘dish of the day’ nudging approach did not influence older people’s plant-based dish choice. Gender, country, and dimensions of sensory, universalism and security were critical factors influencing an older people’s plant-based food choice.

Human Values as Determinants of Fairtrade Consumption in the Czech Republic

Ethical consumerism is a growing field. It attracts increasingly more attention not only from the supply and demand sides, but also from researchers. Numerous surveys are trying to describe consumers’ behaviour; many studies are trying to identify and analyse what contributes to the higher ethical consumption. While this is also the case of the Czech Republic, empirical evidence focused on the effect of consumers’ values on ethical consumerism in the Czech Republic is still missing. Therefore, our goal is to examine the effect of consumers’ values on Fairtrade consumption in the Czech Republic. We measure the values through the Human Values Scale (developed by S. Schwartz) and use socio-demographic characteristics as control variables in a multivariate model. We find that Universalism and Power are values which can predict the frequency of Fairtrade purchases among Czech online Fairtrade shoppers. Along with Universalism, gender proves to be an important predictor too. While generalizing our results, we must bear in mind that our sample describes only those who do purchase Fair trade products on-line.

Cyber human values scale (i-value): the study of development, validity and reliability

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop a scale to measure the level of cyber human values based on the behaviors of social media users in cyberspace.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on a scale-development process by following a systematic approach. First, the current scales were examined; following this, focus group interviews were held; next, an item pool was formed; and the validity and reliability of the items were tested. The validity and reliability studies of the scale were conducted with 1,495 social media users. An application on Facebook was used to collect the data.FindingsAs a result of the validity study, 25 items under five factors were obtained. These factors were being peaceful, truth, solidarity, respect and tolerance. The items obtained were capable of discriminating the individuals in terms of the features to be measured by the scale. In addition, the scale was confirmed to measure correctly the structure obtained in line with the fit indices. The internal consistency coefficient of the scale was 0.90 and split-half reliability coefficient was 0.88.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample has several limitations. Most of the participants were male and the data were collected on social media. Thus, to enhance the validity and reliability of the scale, further in-depth qualitative and cross-cultural studies should be examined.Practical implicationsThis study could provide convenience for practitioners about how to diagnose the cyber human values of the internet users in cyberspace.Originality/valueIt was concluded that this scale was valid, reliable and beneficial to measure social media users’ levels of cyber human values.

Особенности проведения практикума по безопасности жизнедеятельности в высшей школе в рамках педагогической практики магистранта

Objective: studying some specifics of providing training in preparing a person for choosing the right solution in the face of most probable emergencies against the background of growing manmade activities of modern society, more frequent destructive natural calamities, political, interracial and military conflicts for the purpose of ensuring human health and safety. In the higher school, such training is conducted in studying a compulsory general professional subject called “Health and safety training course” that takes its rightful place in a set of subjects where life and health are of the first priority on the human values scale and is compulsory for all educational institutions irrespective of their specialization profile. Methods: The subjects of the theoretical part of the course may be of a general nature and be prepared by a lecturer based on a tentative syllabus of the course. At the same time, practical training and laboratory practicals in the course may be conducted as part of the teaching practice of 280401 “Technosphere safety” graduate students that have as a rule had higher education as a bachelor’s degree in the major during their senior years. Results: An extensive list of university majors requires a reasonable approach to choosing subjects for practical training and laboratory practicals in the “Health and safety training course”. It has a special significance in deciding on students’ research papers. Practical importance: A wide variety of subjects in the above training is a singularly burning issue in conducting hands-on training sessions for engineering students and also humanities or economics students in the higher education system (a bachelor’s degree, specialist degree).

TA and Values as the Predictors of Loneliness among Adolescents

Aim of this study is to examine loneliness in terms of Transactional Analysis ego states, life positions and human values among adolescents. The sample of the study consists of 683 adolescents (405 famele-278 male), who were studying various high schools of Pamukkale and Merkezefendi central districts of Denizli city and accepting to participate in the research voluntarily, during 2014-2015 education year. The participants of the research were administered “UCLA Loneliness Scale”, “Transactional Analysis Ego States Scale”, “Life Positions Scale” and “Human Values Scale”. Data analysis were conducted with SPSS 16.0 statistical package program in .05 and .01 significance levels. All datas were analyzed by correlation and regression. The study results show that, Transactional Analysis ego states, life positions and human values play a role in loneliness level among adolescents. Implications of these findings are discussed and suggestions are presented within the context of literature.

Human Values and Compassionate Love in Highly Gifted Students and Normal Student

The principal objective of this study is to examine the relationship between human values and compassionate love of highly gifted students, and to make a comparison of the levels of compassionate love and human values between highly gifted students and their normal peers. One of the quantitative models, associative patterns, were implemented in this research. These are the models used for the determining of levels and the existence of change between two or more variables. With ease of accessibility, 8th grade normal students (N=200) from Balikesir and Manisa (Turkey) and highly gifted students (N=200) of BILSEM were selected to gather data. 102 of the normal students were female, while 98 were male. 108 of the highly gifted students were female and 92 of them male. In this research, the Human Values Scale and Compassionate Love Scale were applied in order to determine levels of human values and compassionate love of the students. In conclusion, the highly gifted students were observed to have higher levels of human values than their normal peers, and to be more sensitive regarding love.

Human capital, cultural values and economic performance in European regions

This study examines the cross-sectional association of three value orientations (self-direction, achievement and power) and level of gross domestic product (GDP) in 289 NUTS regions. Regional value aggregates, drawn from Schwartz’s Human Value Scale included in the European Social Survey, are taken to indicate value-based human capital. Regression analysis shows that self-direction, indicating independent thought, action and creativity, is a strong predictor for regional GDP after controlling for standard control variables and spatial autocorrelation. Additionally, analysis implements welfare regimes as indicators of larger socio-historic frames and finds significant geographical variations within these frames regarding the relationship between prevailing value climate and level of economic performance. The study contrasts perspectives from economic geography and cultural studies to the literature on alternative definitions and measures for human capital and argues that a synthesis of these perspectives can enrich one’s understanding of the economic geography in Europe.

Religion and Value Orientations in Europe

Sociological literature on Europe often claims a close relationship between religion and values on the one hand and shared values and social cohesion on the other: This article empirically tests the first half of this equation. On the basis of the European Social Survey 2004 comprising of the Schwartz’ Human Value Scale, we analyse if value orientations of religious people differ from those preferred by non-religious people and if such patterns are stable across Europe. We find that religious people in Europe differ from non-religious people in being more conservative and perceiving rules and customs as very important in their lives. We use different indicators for individual religiousness in order to test their different impacts on individual value formation. Despite popular expectations, we were able to establish that value orientations are less influenced by theological knowledge than practicing religion.

Predictor Relationships between the Values the Adolescents Have and Their Levels of Subjective Well-Being and Social Appearance Anxiety: A Model Proposal

The purpose of the current research was to examine the predictor relationships among adolescents' social appearance anxieties, subjective well-beings and the values they have; and to test the model set with reference to these relationships. The research was carried out by using relational survey model. Convenience sampling method was used to select the sample of the study. The sample of the study consisted of adolescents who were enrolled in public high schools of a city located at the centre region of Turkey in 2013-2014 education year. 322 male and 278 female students and in total 600 students aged between 13 and 18 participated in this study. In the present research, “Human Values Scale” developed by Dilmaç (2007); “Adolescent Subjective Well-being Scale” developed by Eryilmaz (2009); “Social Appearance Anxiety Scale Adolescent Form” developed Hart (2008) and Turkish adaptation of by Doğan (2011) were used as the data collection instruments of this study. Data were analyzed using AMOS 19 software according to “Structural Equation Model”. The findings showed that the direct effects of values on social appearance anxiety and subjective well-being, the direct effect of social appearance anxiety on subjective well-being.

Human Values as Predictors of Motivational Beliefs in High School Students

values play a significant role in the personality development of adolescents. Values include the standards that embrace the social changes influencing the whole society and are effective in the construction of desired behaviours. Motivational beliefs are effective component in the learning goals of adolescents. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the predictive powers of human values on motivational beliefs. The participants are 462 high school students. Human Values Scale was used to determine the human values of the students in the study. Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire was also used to measure the motivational strategies of students. Results indicate that human values are significant predictor of motivational strategies. While being pacifist itself explains 10.4 % of the variance related to intrinsic goal orientation, it explains 11.7 % of motivational beliefs it together with respect scale. While tolerance explains 2.9 % of the variance related to external goal orientation itself, it explains 3.7 % of the variance related to external goal orientation together with respect. Whereas being pacifist explains 8.9 % of the variance related to the perception of self-efficacy itself, together with respect, they explain 9.9 % of the variance related to perception of self-efficacy.

Regional cultures attracting interregional migrants

This study develops a theoretical concept of how regional cultural values develop, manifest, and become visible in regional images. Moreover, it tests the impact of regional images on attracting interregional migrants. Specifically, we test whether the values held by inhabitants of particular regions can explain variances in intra-country migration. Analyses are conducted on data collected from official statistics and from the European Social Survey on the level of European NUTS 2 regions. Cultural values are measured using a selection of items from the Human Value Scale developed by Shalom Schwartz. Analyses show that independent from unemployment rates, economic prosperity, and the degree of urbanization, net migration rates are dependent upon the cultural values held by the inhabitants of a region. Individuals are more likely to migrate to regions where inhabitants adopt hedonistic values and a certain degree of ‘social indifference’.

Türk Halk Masallarının Öğrencilerin İnsani Değerlere Yönelik Tutumlarına Etkisi

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effect of values education-related activities through Turkish folk tales on 8th graders’ attitudes towards human values. For this purpose, some Turkish folk tales which concentrate on responsibility, friendship/companionship, peace, respect, tolerance and honesty were selected and taught in accordance with the methods of values education. An experimental pre-test – post-test control group design was used in the study. There were 22 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. To collect the data, the Human Values Scale was administered. Independent-samples t tests were used to analyze the data. As a result, significant differences were found in favor of the experimental group [t(40)=8.899, p<0.05]. According to this, values education-related activities through Turkish Folk tales had positive impact on 8th graders’ attitudes towards human values such as responsibility, friendship / companionship, peace, respect, tolerance and honesty.

Value systems and locus of control of people undergoing aesthetic surgery and their application in the work environment: a case study in Cyprus

With the growth in elective aesthetic plastic surgery in recent years researchers are becoming increasingly interested in the psychological aspects of the procedure. The aim of this research in Cyprus was to describe the value systems and the locus of control of employees who have undergone aesthetic plastic surgery. A questionnaire comprising the Schwartz human value scale, the Rotter scale for locus of control and questions about the reason for surgery was completed by 75 employees in a range of occupations. The values rated as very/supremely important by > 80% of respondents were: preserving public image (power domain), being capable (achievement), pleasure and self-indulgence (hedonism), freedom and independence (self-direction) and being honest, helpful and responsible (benevolence). They also scored highly on politeness and honouring parents and elders (conformity domain) and family security and being clean (security). A small majority (54.7%) was classified as internal or extreme internal locus of control.

The Value Structure in Socioeconomically Less Developed European Countries Still Remains an Ellipse

Based on the 21-item Human Values Scale of the European Social Survey (ESS, 2002–2006), Bilsky, Janik, and Schwartz (2011) concluded that the quasi-circular model of Schwartz’s value theory “fits somewhat less well in less developed societies” (p. 16). This article focuses on their mitigating quantifier “somewhat” and proposes an impartial measure to evaluate Schwartz’s universality claim. European Social Survey data of four rounds 2002–2008 (33 countries, 98 samples) were analysed. Applying restricted confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), we partitioned the 21 items’ variance into an acquiescence part and the two diagonal axes of growth-protection and social-personal focused values. The variance in the growth–protection axis varied between 22.0% (Austria, in 2002) and 2.0% (samples from Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia remain below 5%). Within rounds across countries (respective df = 94), the growth–protection axis’ variance strongly correlates (r = .76) with an index of socioeconomic development, aggregated from five indicators adopted from the World Bank. It also strongly correlates (r = .81) with a sample’s mean member’s location on the growth vs. protection value dimension. We interpret these results as a strong effect and conclude that in socioeconomically less developed countries the value structure remains elliptical or even one-dimensional. The discussion relates the results to Klages’ value synthesis theory.

The relationship between high school students’ psychological needs and human value perceptions

Some basic needs of individuals should be fulfilled in order to sustain his/her existence and improvement. The obligation of needs fulfillment, which is classified as physiologic and psychological needs, constitutes the fundamentals of individual behaviors. Moreover, values which appear as a criterion in an individual's opinion, attitude and behaviour also defines the things a person considers important and thus it shows, preferences, desired and undesired things. Values, which are directly related to feelings, opinions and behavior levels, are seen important in the relationship between psychological needs and values. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship level between human values (responsibility, friendship, peaceful, respect, tolerance and honesty) and psychological needs (relatedness, competence and autonomy). In this research survey method was used. 456 students, who attend several high schools and were chosen randomly, constituted the sample (47,8% male; 52,2% female). The human value perceptions of the students were measured by Human Values Scale. The psychological needs were measured by Basic Psychological Needs Scale which has relationship, efficiency and autonomy sub dimensions. The findings determined that there is a significant relationship between relatedness, competence and autonomy needs and human value perceptions.

Do we have to combine Values in the Schwartz' Human Values Scale? A Comment on the Davidov Studies

This paper addresses the question if it is meaningful to group basic values from the values model of Schwartz, which is a vital component of the European Social Survey (ESS), and presents an alternative approach. The suggestion to group values is raised in several studies led by Eldad Davidov, which more precisely conclude that only four of the original ten values can be studied as such (Hedonism, Stimulation, Self-direction, and Security), whereas the remaining six values have to be grouped in three pairs in order to solve the problem of a lack of discriminant validity. This paper indicates that the grouping was necessary because of the choice strategy of items for the ESS. The items chosen for the different values are chosen in such a way that the correlation within the value is relatively low and sometimes the correlations with items of other values is higher. We show this in three steps: the first one based on a German-study, looking for the correlation between the values in the original Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ). Secondly, the ESS selection from this wider set of items is used to show that this choice leads to much higher correlations between the values. Thirdly, an analysis with an alternative choice from the same PVQ set of items is done to show that this high correlation is not necessary. In this way we show that the high correlation between the values in the ESS is due to the selection of the items in the ESS and is not intrinsic to the values studied.
