Investigating The Impact of HCI on User Experience and Productivity

This study investigates the impact of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) on user experience and productivity at the University of Southampton, UK. By collecting data through interviews and questionnaires from students, administrators, and lecturers, the research aims to assess the influence of HCI concepts within the academic environment. The findings reveal that HCI has a positive effect on user interaction and productivity, demonstrating that a better understanding of HCI principles enhances both user experience and efficiency. IMPACT OF APPLYING UNIVERSAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES ON THE USABILITY OF ONLINE ACCOMMODATION BOOKING WEBSITES

One of the concepts of human-computer interaction is the usability of websites, consisting of features such as efficiency, satisfaction, memorability, and learnability. Usability is particularly important in the case of websites that the user is expected to learn on their own. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the usability of user interfaces of websites and, based on this, to find how this evaluation is affected by the application of universal design principles. The objects of the study are two websites, one complying with the principles of universal design - created for the purpose of the study, and the other – an existing commercial website operating in the market, which does not follow these principles. Three hypotheses are defined: 1) effectiveness and efficiency of analyzed websites are higher for a service that followed the principles of universal design than a website that did not comply with these rules; 2) the quality of the user interface is greater for the service fulfilling the principles of universal design; 3) the satisfaction with the interaction with the interface is greater in case of websites conformed to the principles of universal design. The study uses two methods: eye tracking and questionnaires. The experiment involves 10 participants who had to perform a scenario consisting of 10 instructions that involved locating various elements in each of the tested GUI interfaces. The eye activity is recorded using a Gazepoint GP3 HD desktop eye tracker, which makes it possible to determine the effectiveness and efficiency values of using the analyzed interfaces. Each participant was also asked to fill out two questionnaires: the Lublin University of Technology one and the Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction. The study proves the truth of the hypotheses, that is, the positive impact of universal design on the usability evaluation of user interfaces.

EOG Based Eye Blink Detection using VB GUI for Eye Writing Applications

Usage of bio-signals from Electro-Oculo-Gram (EOG) in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) systems is one of the burgeoning study areas as of now. In order to provide support for physically challenged persons (or keypad Contactless HCI) in operating basic computer functions without making any physical touch with the computer keypad or mouse, we propose a framework utilization concept that changes movement of cursor on the computer screen using virtual keypad based on Visual Basic Graphical User Interface (VB GUI) with the eye movement detection through webcam of the system for different computer functions. In this work, VB GUI platform is used for a web browsing application and corresponding platform operation steps have been included. With the VB GUI, the basic cursor movements in the directions of left, right, up, and down to access the web links on the web page which is treated as eye writing in the concept of human computer interaction. Similarly, we can access different computer Apps such as MS-Doc, XL sheets, Audio and video files etc. Further, this paper focus is on prototype development of different home automation system applications.

Development and Evaluation of a Family Health Management System Using Web Technologies

Abstract: Family health management is a crucial component of healthcare that calls for effective documentation and administration of each family member's medical information. The goal of this project is to create a web-based platform for storing and retrieving health information in order to ease family health management. This system has tools for constructing individual profiles, keeping track of health information, and scheduling and filling medications. A user-friendly design on the website makes it simple for family members to view and update their health information. To guarantee that users have a favorable experience when interacting with the website, the system is developed with a user-centered approach and integrates the concepts of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). By putting in place the necessary security measures, the website also guarantees the privacy and security of user information. The website offers a simple interface for storing, reviewing, and retrieving health data. The website also encourages proactive healthcare by enabling families to adopt preventative steps and enabling early diagnosis of health issues. Overall, the website represents a significant advancement in the healthcare industry and a creative response to the difficulties of managing family health.

Prescriptive and Semantic Analysis of an Automatic Sign Language Translation: Cases on VLibras Avatar Translation Using Video Interviews and Textual Interactions With a Chatbot

Abstract Algorithms designed to translate textual content into sign language (SL) expressed through avatars have been used to reduce accessibility barriers. Our research aimed to identify whether the VLibras tool, widely adopted on Brazilian government websites, is an effective accessibility solution for automatic translation into SL. It is an exploratory and applied qualitative research project involving a bibliographic review and support from expert interpreters. We conducted two experimental studies using sequential chronological cuts and applying prescriptive and semantic analyses. We present evidence that there is no actual translation into SL in the automatic translation process performed by the VLibras translation algorithm (TA) but only a transposition of part of the SL lexicon to the Portuguese morphosyntactic structure. The automatic translation of long texts and texts with complex syntactic structures results in excessive pauses and dactylology for words that have a sign registered in the basic SL dictionary. Using human–computer interaction concepts to evaluate automatic translation into sign language by the VLibras TA expands the existing theoretical discussion. It also contributes to minimizing communication problems caused by the discrepancy between the original message and the machine translation, a practical applicability of this study.

A Systematic Review of Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) Research in Medical and Other Engineering Fields

This article provides a systematic review of research related to Human–Computer Interaction techniques supporting training and learning in various domains including medicine, healthcare, and engineering. The focus is on HCI techniques involving Extended Reality (XR) technology which encompasses Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality. HCI-based research is assuming more importance with the rapid adoption of XR tools and techniques in various training and learning contexts including education. There are many challenges in the adoption of HCI approaches, which results in a need to have a comprehensive and systematic review of such HCI methods in various domains. This article addresses this need by providing a systematic literature review of a cross-section of HCI approaches involving proposed so far. The PRISMA-guided search strategy identified 1156 articles for abstract review. Irrelevant abstracts were discarded. The whole body of each article was reviewed for the remaining articles, and those that were not linked to the scope of our specific issue were also eliminated. Following the application of inclusion/exclusion criteria, 69 publications were chosen for review. This article has been divided into the following sections: Introduction; Research methodology; Literature review; Threats of validity; Future research and Conclusion. Detailed classifications (pertaining to HCI criteria and concepts, such as affordance; training, and learning techniques) have also been included based on different parameters based on the analysis of research techniques adopted by various investigators. The article concludes with a discussion of the key challenges for this HCI area along with future research directions. A review of the research outcomes from these publications underscores the potential for greater success when such HCI-based approaches are adopted during such 3D-based training interactions. Such a higher degree of success may be due to the emphasis on the design of user-friendly (and user-centric) training environments, interactions, and processes that positively impact the cognitive abilities of users and their respective learning/training experiences. We discovered data validating XR-HCI as an ascending method that brings a new paradigm by enhancing skills and safety while reducing costs and learning time through replies to three exploratory study questions. We believe that the findings of this study will aid academics in developing new research avenues that will assist XR-HCI applications to mature and become more widely adopted.

A Methodological Study of Human-Computer Interaction: A Review

Abstract: The concept of human-computer interaction has emerged as a result of advancements in computer technology. As emerging technologies in the fields of mobile and cloud computing, as well as the internet of things (IoT), become more and more ingrained in our daily lives, they have started to pose a serious challenge for professionals in human-computer interaction (HCI). These technologies call for greater dedication from HCI experts in terms of systems interface design. A comprehensive study of human-computer interaction (HCI) has been presented in the current study. The design process of human-computer interaction and the current state-of-art of the same is explained in brief along with the applications of HCI. Based on the results of the review, the study recommended combining human-centred design with agile interface design methodologies. It also encouraged future research using a qualitative or quantitative approach to further explore HCI interface design methodologies, with a focus on cloud-based, AR, VR technologies and other organizational information systems.

An extensive overview on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) application

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is the area of intersection between psychology and the social sciences. HCI assists companies in creating technological products accessible to individuals with disabilities. In addition, HCI helps user experience (UX) designers and other professionals understand each user's requirements relating to technology. This paper aims to give an overview of the concept of Human-Computer Interaction. The overview comprises basic definitions, frameworks, goals, and types of HCI. It also includes a voice user interface and sociophonetics in HCI. Finally, Norman's model of interaction and future scope are discussed.

The Best Practice of Teach Computer Science Students to Use Paper Prototyping

The importance of understanding the repercussions of effective user interface (UI) design is critical for future Computer Science (CS) professionals, given the ubiquity of interfaces on computer devices. Through a paper prototyping activity, this article explains how to teach rapidly and successfully CS students about "fit," a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) concept. Despite its simplicity, the concept of "fit" can be difficult to grasp without much practice. In practice, designing "fit" into UIs can be prohibitively expensive because workable prototypes are generally beyond the technical capabilities of students. As a result, we illustrate how to use paper prototyping to demonstrate "fit" in a hands-on class exercise based on active learning concepts. To guide students through the process of "fit" in UI design, we provide extensive step-by-step directions for planning, setting up, and presenting the exercise. Students will be better equipped to apply both theoretical and practical applications of "fit" in UI design and execution as a result of this assignment; this exercise can be used in any course that covers user interface design, such as concepts of human-computer interaction, systems analysis and design, software engineering, and project management.

User Experience Analysis on Mobile Application Design Using User Experience Questionnaire

Nowadays, it is essential to use all concepts of Human-Computer interaction to understand mobile application design usability. This manuscript aimed to analyze a mobile application user experience (Grab online transportation), especially Grab foodservice users, using a user experience questionnaire since we noticed some Grab food users' complaints. Researchers collected data from 90 respondents within six were not used because the excel data analysis tool found that there were suspicious. We finally analyzed using an excel data analysis tool. The findings have shown that all six scales of the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) are good except the dependability scale. In addition, the mean scale value computed is favorable, and all values are more significant than 0.8 compared to the UEQ benchmark. The findings can be used for dependability improvement to reduce complaints from users.

An overview on cognitive load theory and concepts of human-computer interaction

With the ever-increasing complexity of e-learning environments, ideas from cognitive load theory (CLT) and human-computer interface (HCI) must be integrated (HCI). Both disciplines’ fundamental ideas were compared and contrasted. A search of the literature database "The Guide to Computing Literature" for the terms "cognitive load theory" and "Sweller" yielded no results. In the titles or abstracts of 65 articles, the term "cognitive burden" appeared. The terms intrinsic, extraneous, and relevant cognitive burden were verified in every article. CLT principles have been used to HCI, according to the review. The notion of relevant cognitive load, on the other hand, has received little attention until now. The authors offer two conceptual models. Extraneous cognitive load is divided into two types in the first model: burden generated by instructional design and load caused by software use. The approach explains the emphasis of current instructional design concepts drawn from CLT, as well as conventional usability considerations. The second model incorporates CLT ideas into user-centered design's fundamental components. When it comes to creating e-learning environments, the idea of relevant cognitive burden shows that increasing cognitive load may be beneficial. Future interdisciplinary research topics have been sketched out.

Production and Evaluation of an Educational Process for Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) Courses

Contribution: This work presents a teaching and learning process for human-computer interaction (HCI) courses, combining traditional lecture-based classroom (TLBC), active learning (AL) and project-based learning elements, such that students can increase their understanding over HCI. Background: In undergraduate science computing, the academic curriculum is composed of theoretical and practical courses. The theoretical courses address more abstract content. This process intends to increase the involving of students over the theoretical discipline of HCI. Research Questions: This work shows a different approach to improve student retention for a better understanding of the theoretical aspects over HCI. Methodology: This proposed process has three mainstages and, as newness, uses the t-learning concept to simulate interactive educational videos. In the first stage, the teacher presents concepts of HCI using TLBC. The second stage is AL, where students make oral presentations or make of learning objects based on interactive videos (LOBIVs) to reinforce their self-comprehension over theoretical content. The third stage is the PBL activity of the production of new LOBIVs. Findings: The results show higher statistical scores using the proposed method (PM) in comparison with the TLBC used in HCI course. A total of 131 students concepts were compared in this work, that uses TLBC, with 113 students concepts that use the PM. The results indicate that there are advantages in the PM, because it helps to reduce the number of reproved students and increases the average students grade.

Real-Time and Embedded Detection of Hand Gestures with an IMU-Based Glove

This article focuses on the use of data gloves for human-computer interaction concepts, where external sensors cannot always fully observe the user’s hand. A good concept hereby allows to intuitively switch the interaction context on demand by using different hand gestures. The recognition of various, possibly complex hand gestures, however, introduces unintentional overhead to the system. Consequently, we present a data glove prototype comprising a glove-embedded gesture classifier utilizing data from Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) in the fingertips. In an extensive set of experiments with 57 participants, our system was tested with 22 hand gestures, all taken from the French Sign Language (LSF) alphabet. Results show that our system is capable of detecting the LSF alphabet with a mean accuracy score of 92% and an F1 score of 91%, using complementary filter with a gyroscope-to-accelerometer ratio of 93%. Our approach has also been compared to the local fusion algorithm on an IMU motion sensor, showing faster settling times and less delays after gesture changes. Real-time performance of the recognition is shown to occur within 63 milliseconds, allowing fluent use of the gestures via Bluetooth-connected systems.

The Application of Psychology in Human-computer Interaction

Human-computer interaction is developing with the continuous development of science and technology. Since the emergence of computer technology, the humancomputer interaction has undergone tremendous changes. Today, the field of humancomputer interaction research has not only limited to the technical level, but relied on psychology to make human-computer interaction better. This study first discusses the importance of psychology for human-computer interaction based on the concept of human-computer interaction. Then this paper studies the application of anthropomorphism in the human-computer interaction research. Anthropomorphism refers to the attachment of human characteristics to non-human subjects so that it is seen as a person with life, feeling and thought. There have been more researches about anthropomorphic in the area of human-computer interaction so far. We introduce the theoretical background of anthropomorphism and elaborate on the psychological significance of anthropomorphism in terms of the application of human-computer interaction.

Developing Charity Web Application to Eradicate Poverty in Bhutan

This paperdescribes the designsand features deduced from the extensive literature reviewsthat helped us to build the prototype of the charity web application. Literature review on poverty helped us to understand feasibility and the need of building charity web applicationto uplift the poor communities in Bhutan.The prototype had been built considering the Human Computer Interaction(HCI) domain such as navigability, visual and page design. Navigability is achieved by providing thelinks on the side bar, breadcrumbs for a complex site and search tools for the ease of use. Visual design includes the logical structuring of contents and appropriate use of fonts, graphics, space and colors. Successful user friendly website with the possibility to minimize the access time issue is defined in page design.The HCI concepts are considered while building the prototype to achieve overall effectiveness, efficiency of charity web application and user satisfaction.

New directions in information technology law: learning from human–computer interaction

ABSTRACTEffectively regulating the domestic Internet of Things (IoT) requires a turn to technology design. However, the role of designers as regulators still needs to be situated. By drawing on a specific domain of technology design, human–computer interaction (HCI), we unpack what an HCI-led approach can offer IT law. By reframing the three prominent design concepts of provenance, affordances and trajectories, we offer new perspectives on the regulatory challenges of the domestic IoT. Our HCI concepts orientate us towards the social context of technology. We argue that novel regulatory strategies can emerge through a better understanding of the relationships and interactions between designers, end users and technology. Accordingly, closer future alignment of IT law and HCI approaches is necessary for effective regulation of emerging technologies.

An Empirical Study of User Experience on Touch Mice

The touch mouse is a new type of computer mouse that provides users with a new way of touch-based environment to interact with computers. For more than a decade, user experience (UX) has grown into a core concept of human-computer interaction (HCI), describing a user’s perceptions and responses that result from the use of a product in a particular usage context. This paper presents an empirical study of UX on touch mice via the user experience questionnaire (UEQ) survey, the purpose of which is to uncover how target users perceive the selected touch mice after interacting with them. A total of 20 university students were recruited as target users to participate in the UX test to perform defined tasks with the 6 selected touch mice under the Windows 8 operating environment. The experimental results can help researchers understand how users perceive and value such new type of computer mouse, thus ensuring positive UX and leading to more desirable touch mice.

Generic Customizable Simulation Modules to Emphasize Error Risk in Medication Order Entry

Latent interface design issues can contribute to error prone instances during electronic medication order entry, which may in turn compromise patient safety. In electronic medication order entry, error-tolerant design and safety engineering approaches are paramount for mitigating risk. However, long-term interface or programming redesign recommendations often take time to implement after hazards are identified. Tradeoffs and unanswered questions in design may further complicate design and redesign efforts. A proposed approach for addressing these gaps where redesign is delayed or not possible is promoting user awareness of potential error mechanisms by creating structured customizable electronic health record (EHR) and computerized provider order entry (CPOE) simulation training modules to highlight latent design issues that could contribute to data entry problems. The development and use of simulated EHR and CPOE environments for training purposes has only recently begun to be described in published literature. These recent publications describe general EHR simulation curricula. This paper introduces the incorporation of human factors and human-computer interaction concepts as a primary learning objective within a model for a customizable universal EHR and CPOE simulation module.

A method to evaluate haptic interfaces for working dogs

Working dogs perform a variety of essential services for their human partners, from assisting people with disabilities, to Search and Rescue, police, and military work. Recent interest in the nascent field of Animal-Computer Interaction has prompted research in computer-mediated technology for communication between working dogs and their handlers. Haptic (touch) interfaces in the form of vibrating motors are a promising approach for handler-to-dog communication. Haptic interfaces can provide a silent, long-range method of sending commands to a dog, when voice or hand signals are inappropriate or impossible. However, evaluating haptic interfaces for dogs, who cannot self-report sensations, creates interesting challenges. This study draws on human-computer interaction concepts, such as Just Noticeable Difference, to explore methods and issues in evaluating haptic interfaces for working dogs. We created a haptic system and developed an evaluation method, results for ten dogs of widely varying breeds, sizes, and coat types. Provides a new method to evaluate haptic interfaces, solving the inability of dogs to self-report.Addresses how to mitigate the Clever Hans effect through double blind and randomized studies.Stresses the importance of training reporting behavior to reliable haptic cues.

Impersonate human decision making process: an interactive context-aware recommender system

A considerable amount of information is quickly disseminated worldwide and users struggled to survive on such data tsunami. Context-recommender-aware systems (CAR) are then developed which enabling users to locate valuable and useful information from a large amount of disordered data. However, human decision-making contains multiple steps and a recursive loop, most users tend to adjust their decision many times instead of achieving the final decision-making immediately. Therefore, to replicate such a recursive process among multiple steps, the traditional CAR system should be altered as an interactive CAR (iCAR) system for improving the recommendation accuracy. In view of the deficiency in the present CAR, this study leads the concept of human-computer interaction in tradition CAR and establishes an interactive context-aware recommender System (iCAR). To validate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed iCAR system, a car rental website which is designed based on iCAR is shown as a demonstration. According to the car rental case shown, after couples of iterations, the decision criteria can be gradually clarified by the proposed algorithm of inferring engine. Also, iCAR can find users a car that most satisfies their requirements by using the contexts information. iCAR can improve the accuracy of traditional CAR system and provide user more precise recommendation results according to 3-dimensions information, including: user, item and context information. The iCAR system can be further expected to apply to various fields, such as online shopping or travel packages recommendations, to optimize recommendations results.
