Type Test and Performance Analysis of the Non-Backlash Double-Roller Enveloping Hourglass Worm Drive

A transmission experiment platform was built to make an explicit test plan for the non-backlash double-roller enveloping hourglass worm drive reducing device, according to the type test and performance analysis, the noise, temperature, and efficiency of the new worm was obtained under different load and rotational speed. The results show that the non-backlash double-roller enveloping hourglass worm gearing possesses a excellent meshing performance as expected, which can eliminate the backlash, and it indicates that the new drive has achieved the anticipated project objective, eliminated the hysterisis error in transmission, and has the advantages of low noise, high transmission efficiency.

This research proposes the method of manufacturing wheels which changed the number of teeth by the same hob. The designed hourglass worm gear requires the center distance corresponding to number of teeth. A design-criteria point is located in the throat of the standard hourglass worm. And center distance is defined when a wheel and a worm fulfill the conditions of contact. The geometric performance of the designed hourglass worm gears is investigated. Compared with cylindrical worm gears, it is high performance and the validity of the proposed method became clear.

Study on the Strength Design for Steel Hourglass Worm Pairs of Track Tension Adjustor on Special Vehicles

This study analyzed the difference between the steel worm gear in the worm type track regulator and the commonly power hourglass worm. And a strength design method of steel worm gear pair in the track regulator was presented based on the design method of hourglass worm gear: According to the condition of manual adjustment, the strength design of the worm gear pair worm material is tin bronze material , select primary center distance a1, And then according to the difference on the carrying capacity the steel worm gear and tin-bronze worm gear, correct primary center distance a1, Finally check the contact strength of tooth surface when locking condition.

Parametric Study of Meshing Characteristics With Respect to Different Meshing Rollers of the Antibacklash Double-Roller Enveloping Worm Gear

Roller shapes play a very critical role in the performance of antibacklash double-roller enveloping hourglass worm (ADEHW) gears; however, their influence is seldom reported in the literature. Based on the theories of differential geometry and gear meshing, this paper presents generic models of meshing characteristics for ADEHW gears, including both the contact curve and the tooth profile. We present different meshing functions and their derivatives with respect to each drive type and their associated roller shapes. We also compare the effects of contact curve, tooth profile, tooth undercutting, lubrication angle, induced normal curvature, and autorotation angle in order to design the most optimal tooth profile for the ADEHW gear. Finite element analysis was also conducted in order to minimize the contact stresses as a function of the roller type. Our results show that a spherical roller has the smallest value among the three available meshing roller shapes but is the most difficult design to procure. A cylindrical roller, however, incurs the greatest contact stress.

A General Modification Theory for Double-Enveloping Hourglass Worm Drives

A universal modification theory is developed for all kinds of hourglass worm drives, no matter what shape the generating surface of the worm is. Based on the theory established, toroidal worm drives can be classified into two main categories: with singular points and without singular points. That is to say, the unmodified hourglass worm gearing is merely a special case of the modified one in essence. Furthermore, the meshing characteristics of a double-enveloping toroidal worm drive are entirely up to the situation of the solution of the meshing equation of the second envelope.

Parameter Optimization of the Non-backlash Double-roller Enveloping Hourglass Worm Gearing

Non-backlash double-roller enveloping hourglass worm gearing is a new-type hourglass worm gearing,which can be used in high precision and big load applications domain. To obtain a non-backlash double-roller enveloping hourglass worm gearing with perfect meshing performance,the optimization design of the worm gearing is presented with the contact and lubrication performances of the gearing taken into consideration. By numerical calculation of the tooth contact parameters that includes lubrication angle,induced normal curvature,entrainment velocity and roller rotation angle,the effect factor of the meshing performance are discussed and the value range of design variables is determined. Then,the optimization model of the worm gearing is built,in which the roller rotation angle and comprehensive coefficient of tooth for elastohydrodynamic lubrication condition are taken as optimization objectives,and the lubrication angle,the strength and stiffness of the worm axis and geometric non-interference are considered as constraint conditions. The GA toolbox in the Matlab software is utilized to obtain the optimal solution. A numerical example shows that this method can be used to effectively improve the meshing performance of the non-backlash double-roller enveloping hourglass worm gearing.

Mathematical model and worm wheel tooth working surfaces of the ZN-type hourglass worm gear set

In this study, the hourglass worm gear set is composed of a ZN-type hourglass worm generated by straight-edged blade cutters and a ZN-type hourglass worm wheel generated by worm-type hourglass hob cutters. Mathematical model of the ZN-type hourglass worm gear set is derived based on its generation mechanism and the theory of gearing. According to the developed mathematical model of the gear set, computer graphs of the ZN-type hourglass worm and worm wheel are presented. The tooth working surface, boundary lines and contact lines of the ZN-type hourglass worm gear set under different lead angles, pressure angles and modules are investigated and compared with those of the ZA-type hourglass worm gear set.

Numerical analysis method of complex tooth surface gear mesh contact region

Discrete element of complex tooth surface is ac-quired, using moving least square method (MLSM) tooth sur-face reconstruction is done. The reconstructive tooth surface can substitute for original complex tooth surface in contact region analysis by numerical method. The bi-search technique is applied to search the contact area, this method is efficient and advanced. Program is compiled to analyze the contact region of non-involutes beveled gears and involutes enveloping hourglass worm gear. The analysis result proves that the non-involutes beveled gears can realize linear contact in the spatial meshing state and the involutes enveloping hourglass worm gear has high carrying capacity. The numerical analysis result is com-pared with FEA analysis result and experimental result which proves the numerical method is precise and practical.

Meshing control of the double-enveloping hourglass worm gearing under the conditions of existing the errors and the load

An approach of localizing the contact zone of the double-envelope hourglass worm gearing has been proposed to reduce the sensitivity to the errors and the load. The influence of the errors on the contact zone is systematically investigated. The contact deformation, the shift of contact zone and load share among the meshing tooth-pairs has been analyzed using 3D contact FEM. After synthetically considering the influence of the errors and the load, the worm surface is modified into the crowning in height direction in comparison with the hob. The results from the loaded contact analysis demonstrate that this modification drive can absorb the influence of the errors and the load on meshing performance.

Hourglass Worm Gearing with Worm Teeth Generated by High-Speed Screw Cutting Method. Manufacturing of High-Speed Hourglass Worm Screw Cutting Machine and Performance Test Results of the Worm Gear Generated by this New Machine.

Authors reported theory of hourglass worm gearing whose worm is generated by high speed screw generating method, on previous report. CNC high speed hourglass worm generating machine has been developed according to the theory. And worm cutting test and performance test of worm gearing was made. The test results are as follows: (1) Newly developed machine has high speed cutting ability same as mach type screw generating apparatus. (2) Surface roughness of worm tooth surface generated by the CNC high speed hourglass worm generating machine has same order of roughness of screw surface cut by mach type screw generating apparatus. (3) Hourglass worm gearing generated by the newly developed machine showed high efficiency and ran 1000 hours without trouble.
