Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus star formation history as revealed by detailed elemental abundances. An archival study using SAGA data

The Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus merger was a major event in the history of the Milky Way. Debris from this merger has been extensively studied with full kinematic data from the Gaia mission. Understanding the star formation history of the progenitor galaxy aids in our understanding of the evolution of the Milky Way and galaxy formation in general. We aimed to constrain the star formation history of the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus progenitor galaxy using elemental abundances of member stars. Previous studies on Milky Way satellite dwarf galaxies show that key elemental abundance patterns, which probe different nucleosynthetic channels, reflect the host galaxy's star formation history. We gathered Mg, Fe, Ba, and Eu abundance measurements for Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus stars from the SAGA database. Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus members were selected kinematically. Inspired by previous studies, we used Fe/Mg Ba/Mg Eu/Mg and Eu/Ba as a function of Fe/H to constrain the star formation history of Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus. We used the known star formation histories and elemental abundance patterns of the Sculptor and Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxies as a comparison. The elemental abundance ratios of Fe/Mg Ba/Mg Eu/Mg and Eu/Ba all increase with Fe/H in Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus. The Eu/Mg begins to increase at Fe/H -2.0$ and continues steadily, contrasting with the trend observed in the Sculptor dSph galaxy. The Eu/Ba increases and remains high across the Fe/H range, unlike the pattern seen in the Sculptor dSph galaxy, and deviates from the Fornax dSph galaxy at high Fe/H . The Ba/Mg is higher than those of the Sculptor dSph galaxy at the lowest Fe/H and gradually increases, similar to the Fornax dSph galaxy. We constrained three main properties of the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus star formation history: 1) star formation started gradually, 2) it extended for over 2 Gyr, and 3) it was quenched around Fe/H of $-0.5$, likely when it fell into the Milky Way. We show that the elemental abundance ratios Fe/Mg Ba/Mg Eu/Mg and Eu/Ba can be used to trace the star formation history of a disrupted galaxy when these measurements are available over an Fe/H range that is representative of the progenitor galaxy's stellar population.

Deciphering the JWST spectrum of a ‘little red dot’ at z ∼ 4.53: An obscured AGN and its star-forming host

JWST has revealed a class of numerous, extremely compact sources with rest-frame red optical/near-infrared (NIR) and blue ultraviolet (UV) colours nicknamed ‘little red dots’. We present one of the highest signal-to-noise ratio JWST NIRSpec prism spectra of a little red dot, J0647_1045 at z = 4.5319 ± 0.0001, and examine its NIRCam morphology to differentiate the origin of the UV and optical/NIR emission and elucidate the nature of the little red dot phenomenon. J0647_1045 is unresolved (re ≲ 0.17 kpc) in the three NIRCam long-wavelength filters but significantly extended (re = 0.45 ± 0.06 kpc) in the three short-wavelength filters, indicating a red compact source in a blue star-forming galaxy. The spectral continuum shows a clear change in slope, from blue in the optical/UV to red in the rest-frame optical/NIR, which is consistent with two distinct components fit by power laws with different attenuations: AV = 0.38 ± 0.01 (UV) and AV = 5.61 ± 0.04 (optical/NIR). Fitting the Hα line requires both broad (full width at half maximum of ∼4300 ± 100 km s−1) and narrow components, but none of the other emission lines, including Hβ, show evidence of broadness. We calculated AV = 0.9 ± 0.4 from the Balmer decrement using narrow Hα and Hβ and AV > 4.1 ± 0.1 from broad Hα and an upper limit on broad Hβ, which is consistent with blue and red continuum attenuation, respectively. Based on a single-epoch Hα line width, the mass of the central black hole is 8−0.4+0.5 × 108 M⊙. Our findings are consistent with a multi-component model, in which the optical/NIR and broad lines arise from a highly obscured, spatially unresolved region, likely a relatively massive active galactic nucleus, while the less obscured UV continuum and narrow lines arise, at least partly, from a small but spatially resolved star-forming host galaxy.

Modelling of long gamma-ray burst host galaxies at cosmic noon from damped Lyman-α absorption statistics

ABSTRACT We study the properties of long gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies using a statistical modelling framework derived to model damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra at high redshift. The distribution of $N_{\rm H\, {\small I}}$ for GRB-DLAs is $\sim$10 times higher than what is found for quasar-DLAs at similar impact parameters. We interpret this as a temporal selection effect due to the short-lived GRB progenitor probing its host at the onset of a starburst where the interstellar medium may exhibit multiple overdense regions. Owing to the larger $N_{\rm H\, {\small I}}$, the dust extinction is larger with 29 per cent of GRB-DLAs exhibiting $A(V)\gt 1$ mag in agreement with the fraction of ‘dark bursts’. Despite the differences in $N_{\rm H\, {\small I}}$ distributions, we find that high-redshift $2 \lt z \lt 3$ quasar- and GRB-DLAs trace the luminosity function of star-forming host galaxies in the same way. We propose that their differences may arise from the fact that the galaxies are sampled at different times in their star formation histories, and that the absorption sightlines probe the galaxy haloes differently. Quasar-DLAs sample the full H i cross-section, whereas GRB-DLAs sample only regions hosting cold neutral medium. Previous studies have found that GRBs avoid high-metallicity galaxies ($\sim$0.5 $Z_{\odot }$). Since at these redshifts galaxies on average have lower metallicities, our sample is only weakly sensitive to such a threshold. Lastly, we find that the modest detection rate of cold gas (H$_2$ or C i) in GRB spectra can be explained mainly by a low volume filling factor of cold gas clouds and to a lesser degree by destruction from the GRB explosion itself.

The Reliability of Type Ia Supernovae Delay-time Distributions Recovered from Galaxy Star Formation Histories

We present a numerical analysis investigating the reliability of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) delay-time distributions recovered from individual host galaxy star formation histories. We utilize star formation histories of mock samples of galaxies generated from the IllustrisTNG simulation at two redshifts to recover delay-time distributions. The delay-time distributions are constructed through piecewise constants as opposed to typically employed parametric forms such as power laws or Gaussian or skew/lognormal functions. The SN Ia delay-time distributions are recovered through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo exploration of the likelihood space by comparing the expected SN Ia rate within each mock galaxy to the observed rate. We show that a reduced representative sample of nonhost galaxies is sufficient to reliably recover delay-time distributions while simultaneously reducing the computational load. We also highlight a potential systematic between recovered delay-time distributions and the mass-weighted ages of the underlying host galaxy stellar population.

A Big Red Dot: Scattered light, host galaxy signatures and multi-phase gas flows in a luminous, heavily reddened quasar at cosmic noon

Abstract We present a deep X-Shooter rest-frame UV to optical spectral analysis of the heavily reddened quasar, ULASJ2315+0143 at z = 2.566, known to reside in a major-merger host galaxy. The rest-frame optical is best-fit by a dust-reddened quasar (E(B-V)QSO = 1.55) with black-hole mass $\rm log_{10}(H\beta , M\small {BH} [{\rm M}_{\odot }]) = 10.26 \pm 0.05$, bolometric luminosity $\rm L_{Bol}$ = $\rm 10^{48.16}\, erg\,\,s^{-1}$ and Eddington-scaled accretion rate log$_{10}(\rm \lambda _{Edd}) = -0.19$. We find remarkable similarities between ULASJ2315+0143 and the high-redshift Little Red Dots (LRDs). The rest-frame UV cannot be explained by a dusty quasar component alone and requires an additional blue component consistent with either a star-forming host galaxy or scattered AGN light. We detect broad high-ionisation emission lines in the rest-UV, supporting the scattered light interpretation for the UV excess. The scattering fraction represents just 0.05% of the total luminosity of ULASJ2315+0143 . Analysis of the mid infra-red SED suggests an absence of hot dust on torus-scales similar to what is observed for LRDs. The obscuring medium is therefore likely on galaxy scales. We detect narrow, blueshifted associated absorption line systems in 1 iv, 1 v, 1 iv and 1 iii. There is evidence for significant high-velocity (>1000 $\rm km\, s^{-1}$) outflows in both the broad and narrow line regions as traced by 1 iv and [1 iii] emission. The kinetic power of the [1 iii] wind is $\dot{\epsilon }_{k}^{ion} = 10^{44.61} \rm erg\, s^{-1} \sim 0.001\, L_{Bol}$. ULASJ2315+0143 is likely in an important transition phase where star formation, black-hole accretion and multi-phase gas flows are simultaneously occurring.

CLusters in the Uv as EngineS (CLUES). II. Subkiloparsec-scale Outflows Driven by Stellar Feedback

We analyze the far-ultraviolet (1130−1770 Å rest frame) spectroscopy of 20 young (<50 Myr) and massive (>104 M ⊙) star clusters (YSCs) in 11 nearby star-forming galaxies. We probe the interstellar gas intervening along the line of sight, detecting several metal absorption lines of a wide range of ionization potentials, from 6.0 to 77.5 eV. Multiple-component Voigt fits to the absorption lines are used to study the kinematics of the gas. We find that nearly all targets in the sample feature gas outflowing from 30 up to 190 km s−1, often in both the neutral and ionized phases. The outflow velocities correlate with the underlying stellar population properties directly linked to the feedback: the mass of the YSCs, the photon production rate, and the instantaneous mechanical luminosity produced by stellar winds and supernovae. We detect a neutral inflow in four targets, which we interpret as likely not associated with the star cluster but tracing larger-scale gas kinematics. A comparison between the outflows’ energy and that produced by the associated young stellar populations suggests an average coupling efficiency of 10% with a broad scatter. Our results extend the relation found in previous works between galactic outflows and the host galaxy star formation rate to smaller scales, pointing toward the key role that clustered star formation and feedback play in regulating galaxy growth.

Environmental Dependence of Type Ia Supernovae in Low-redshift Galaxy Clusters

We present an analysis of 102 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in nearby (z < 0.1), x-ray-selected galaxy clusters. This is the largest such sample to date and is based on archival data primarily from ZTF and ATLAS. We divide our SNe Ia into an inner cluster sample projected within r 500 of the cluster center and an outer cluster sample projected between r 500 and 2 r 500. We compare these to field samples of SNe Ia at similar redshifts in both quiescent and star-forming host galaxies. Based on SALT3 fits to the light curves, we find that the inner cluster SNe Ia have a higher fraction of fast-evolving objects (SALT3 x 1 < −1) than the outer cluster or field quiescent samples. This implies an intrinsically different population of SNe Ia occurs in inner cluster environments, beyond known correlations based on host galaxy alone. Our cluster samples show a strongly bimodal x 1 distribution with a fast-evolving component that dominates the inner cluster objects (≳75%) but is just a small fraction of SNe Ia in field star-forming galaxies (≲10%). We do not see strong evidence for variations in the color (SALT3 c) distributions among the samples and find only minor differences in SN Ia standardization parameters and Hubble residuals. We suggest that the age of the stellar population drives the observed distributions, with the oldest populations nearly exclusively producing fast-evolving SNe Ia.

The Peak of the Fallback Rate from Tidal Disruption Events: Dependence on Stellar Type

A star completely destroyed in a tidal disruption event (TDE) ignites a luminous flare that is powered by the fallback of tidally stripped debris to a supermassive black hole (SMBH) of mass M •. We analyze two estimates for the peak fallback rate in a TDE, one being the “frozen-in” model, which predicts a strong dependence of the time to peak fallback rate, t peak, on both stellar mass and age, with 15 days ≲ t peak ≲ 10 yr for main sequence stars with masses 0.2 ≤ M ⋆/M ⊙ ≤ 5 and M • = 106 M ⊙. The second estimate, which postulates that the star is completely destroyed when tides dominate the maximum stellar self-gravity, predicts that t peak is very weakly dependent on stellar type, with tpeak=23.2±4.0daysM•/106M⊙1/2 for 0.2 ≤ M ⋆/M ⊙ ≤ 5, while tpeak=29.8±3.6daysM•/106M⊙1/2 for a Kroupa initial mass function truncated at 1.5M ⊙. This second estimate also agrees closely with hydrodynamical simulations, while the frozen-in model is discrepant by orders of magnitude. We conclude that (1) the time to peak luminosity in complete TDEs is almost exclusively determined by SMBH mass, and (2) massive-star TDEs power the largest accretion luminosities. Consequently, (a) decades-long extra-galactic outbursts cannot be powered by complete TDEs, including massive-star disruptions, and (b) the most highly super-Eddington TDEs are powered by the complete disruption of massive stars, which—if responsible for producing jetted TDEs—would explain the rarity of jetted TDEs and their preference for young and star-forming host galaxies.

DESI Survey Validation Data in the COSMOS/Hyper Suprime-Cam Field: Cool Gas Trace Main-sequence Star-forming Galaxies at the Cosmic Noon

We present the first result in exploring the gaseous halo and galaxy correlation using the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument survey validation data in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) and Hyper Suprime-Cam field. We obtain multiphase gaseous halo properties in the circumgalactic medium by using 115 quasar spectra (signal-to-noise ratio > 3). We detect Mg ii absorption at redshift 0.6 < z < 2.5, C iv absorption at 1.6 < z < 3.6, and H i absorption associated with the Mg ii and C iv. By crossmatching the COSMOS2020 catalog, we identify the Mg ii and C iv host galaxies in 10 quasar fields at 0.9< z < 3.1. We find that within the impact parameter of 250 kpc, a tight correlation is seen between the strong Mg ii equivalent width and the host galaxy star formation rate. The covering fraction f c of the strong Mg ii selected galaxies, which is the ratio of the absorbing galaxy in a certain galaxy population, shows significant evolution in the main-sequence galaxies and marginal evolution in all the galaxy populations within 250 kpc at 0.9 < z < 2.2. The f c increase in the main-sequence galaxies likely suggests the coevolution of strong Mg ii absorbing gas and the main-sequence galaxies at the cosmic noon. Furthermore, Mg ii and C iv absorbing gas is detected out of the galaxy virial radius, tentatively indicating the feedback produced by the star formation and/or the environmental effects.

Discovery of a Low-redshift Hot Dust-obscured Galaxy

We report the discovery of the hyperluminous, highly obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) WISE J190445.04+485308.9 (W1904+4853, hereafter, L bol ∼ 1.1 × 1013 L ⊙) at z = 0.415. Its well-sampled spectral energy distribution (SED) is dominated by infrared dust emission, though broad emission lines are detected in the optical spectra. These features suggest that W1904+4853 contains an actively accreting supermassive black hole hidden in its dusty cocoon, resembling the observed properties of hot dust-obscured galaxies (Hot DOGs), a population previously only identified at z > 1.0. Using the broad component of the Mg ii 2798 Å emission line, we estimate a black hole mass of . The corresponding Eddington ratio (η) of implies that the central black hole accretion is at the theoretical limit of isotropic accretion. The rest-frame UV-optical SED also indicates that the host galaxy of W1904+4853 harbors strong star formation activity at the rate of 6–84 M ⊙ yr−1 with an independent estimate of star formation rate up to ∼45 M ⊙ yr−1 using the [O ii] emission line. With an estimated stellar mass of 3 × 1010 M ⊙, the host galaxy appears to be a starburst system with respect to the main sequence of the star-forming galaxies at the same redshift. Although blueshifted and asymmetric [O iii] emission provides evidence of an outflow, we estimate it to be an order of magnitude smaller than the star formation rate, indicating that the current obscured AGN activity at the center has not yet produced significant feedback on the host galaxy star formation activity. W1904+4853 supports the interpretation that Hot DOGs are a rare transitional phase of AGN accretion in galaxy evolution, a phase that can persist into the present-day Universe.

AT2023fhn (the Finch): a luminous fast blue optical transient at a large offset from its host galaxy

ABSTRACT Luminous fast blue optical transients (LFBOTs) – the prototypical example being AT 2018cow – are a rare class of events whose origins are poorly understood. They are characterized by rapid evolution, featureless blue spectra at early times, and luminous X-ray and radio emission. LFBOTs thus far have been found exclusively at small projected offsets from star-forming host galaxies. We present Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, Chandra, and Very Large Array observations of a new LFBOT, AT 2023fhn. The Hubble Space Telescope data reveal a large offset (&amp;gt;3.5 half-light radii) from the two closest galaxies, both at redshift z ∼ 0.24. The location of AT 2023fhn is in stark contrast with previous events, and demonstrates that LFBOTs can occur in a range of galactic environments.

The Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS)

Context. The interaction between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their host galaxies is scarcely resolved. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are believed to represent AGN at early stages of their evolution and to allow one to observe feeding and feedback processes at high black hole accretion rates. Aims. We aim to constrain the properties of the ionised gas outflow in Mrk 1044, a nearby super-Eddington accreting NLS1. Based on the outflow energetics and the associated timescales, we estimate the outflow’s future impact on the ongoing host galaxy star formation on different spatial scales. Methods. We applied a spectroastrometric analysis to observations of Mrk 1044’s nucleus obtained with the adaptive-optics-assisted narrow field mode of the VLT/MUSE instrument. This allowed us to map two ionised gas outflows traced by [O III], which have velocities of −560 ± 20 km s−1 and −144 ± 5 km s−1. Furthermore, we used an archival spectrum from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on HST to identify two Ly-α absorbing components that escape from the centre with approximately twice the velocity of the ionised gas components. Results. Both [O III] outflows are spatially unresolved and located close to the AGN (&lt; 1 pc). They have gas densities higher than 105 cm−3, which implies that the BPT diagnostic cannot be used to constrain the underlying ionisation mechanism. We explore whether an expanding shell model can describe the velocity structure of Mrk 1044’s multi-phase outflow. In the ionised gas emission, an additional outflowing component, which is spatially resolved, is present. It has a velocity of −211 ± 22 km s−1 and a projected size of 4.6 ± 0.6 pc. Our kinematic analysis suggests that significant turbulence is present in the interstellar medium around the nucleus, which may lead to a condensation rain, potentially explaining the efficient feeding of Mrk 1044’s AGN. Within the innermost 0.5″ (160 pc), we detect modest star formation hidden by the beam-smeared emission from the outflow. Conclusions. We estimate that the multi-phase outflow was launched &lt; 104 yr ago. Together with the star formation in the vicinity of the nucleus, this suggests that Mrk 1044’s AGN phase started only recently. The outflow carries enough mass and energy to impact the host galaxy star formation on different spatial scales, highlighting the complexity of the AGN feeding and feedback cycle in its early stages.

The Redshift Evolution of Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources out to z ∼ 0.5: Comparison with X-Ray Binary Populations and Contribution to the Cosmic X-Ray Background

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are thought to be powerful X-ray binaries (XRBs) and may contribute significantly to the redshift-dependent X-ray emission from star-forming galaxies. We have assembled a uniform sample of 259 ULXs over the redshift range z = 0.002–0.51 to constrain their physical nature and their contribution to the cosmic X-ray background. The sample is constructed by crossmatching galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with the Chandra Source Catalog and selecting off-nuclear X-ray sources after applying astrometric corrections. The fraction of contaminants is ∼30% and shows no evolution with redshift. The host-galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) are systematically elevated relative to the parent sample when matched in host stellar mass. The specific SFRs suggest a slight preference for high-mass XRBs, and the X-ray luminosity scaling relations with host-galaxy stellar mass and SFR indicate that the highest-redshift sources represent relatively luminous XRB populations that dominate their host-galaxy X-ray emission. The fraction of galaxies hosting at least one ULX of a given luminosity increases with redshift over the full range of our sample, as expected if ULXs are preferentially found in galaxies with high SFRs and low metallicities. At z ∼ 0.5, the ULX X-ray flux is consistent with the X-ray emission from star-forming galaxies. Moreover, ULXs may account for up to ∼40% of the integrated flux from XRBs in the normal galaxy population out to z ∼ 0.5, suggesting they may contribute significantly to the overall ionizing radiation from galaxies.

Evidence for the connection between star formation rate and the evolutionary phases of quasars

Both theory and observations suggest that outflows driven by an active central supermassive black hole have a feedback effect on shaping the global properties of the host galaxy1–8. However, whether feedback from the outflow is effective, and if so, whether it is positive or negative, have long been controversial. Here, using the latest catalogue from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we use the flux ratio of the [O ii] to [Ne v] emission lines as a proxy to compare the star formation rate in the hosts of quasars with different types of broad absorption lines (BALs): low-ionization (Lo)BAL, high-ionization (Hi)BAL and non-BAL. We find that the star formation rate decreases from LoBAL to HiBAL quasars, and then increases from HiBAL to non-BAL quasars. Assuming that the sequence of LoBAL to HiBAL to non-BAL represents evolution, our results are consistent with a quenching and subsequent rebound of star formation in quasar host galaxies. This phenomenon can be explained by suppression of the star formation rate by the outflow and then rebound of the rate once the outflow disappears as the quasars evolve from HiBALs to non-BALs. Our result suggests that the quasar outflow has a negative global feedback on galaxy evolution. Through an analysis of broad absorption lines in a range of quasars, quasar outflows are shown to have a negative global feedback effect on star formation, demonstrated by the recovery of star formation rates after the outflows disappear.

Follow-up Observations of the Prolonged, Super-Eddington, Tidal Disruption Event Candidate 3XMM J150052.0+015452: the Slow Decline Continues

Abstract The X-ray source 3XMM J150052.0+015452 was discovered as a spectacular tidal disruption event candidate during a prolonged (&gt;11 yr) outburst. It exhibited unique quasi-soft X-ray spectra of characteristic temperature kT ∼ 0.3 keV for several years at the peak, but in a recent Chandra observation (10 yr into the outburst) a super-soft X-ray spectrum of kT ∼ 0.15 keV was detected. Such dramatic spectral softening could signal the transition from the super-Eddington to thermal state or the temporary presence of a warm absorber. Here we report on our study of four new XMM-Newton follow-up observations of the source. We found that they all showed super-soft spectra, suggesting that the source had remained super-soft for &gt;5 yr. Then its spectral change is best explained as due to the super-Eddington to thermal spectral state transition. The fits to the thermal-state spectra suggested a smaller absorption toward the source than that obtained in Lin et al. This led us to update the modeling of the event as due to the disruption of a 0.75 M ⊙ star by a massive black hole of a few × 105 M ⊙. We also obtained two HST images in the F606W and F814W filters and found that the dwarf star-forming host galaxy can be resolved into a dominant disk and a smaller bulge. No central point source was clearly seen in either filter, ruling out strong optical emission associated with the X-ray activity.

A Catalog of 204 Offset and Dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs): Increased AGN Activation in Major Mergers and Separations under 4 kpc

Abstract During galaxy mergers, gas and dust are driven toward the centers of merging galaxies, triggering enhanced star formation and supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth. Theory predicts that this heightened activity peaks at SMBH separations &lt;20 kpc; if sufficient material accretes onto one or both of the SMBHs for them to become observable as active galactic nuclei (AGNs) during this phase, they are known as offset and dual AGNs, respectively. To better study these systems, we have built the ACS-AGN Merger Catalog, a large catalog (N = 204) of uniformly selected offset and dual AGN observed by the Hubble Space Telescope at 0.2 &lt; z &lt; 2.5 with separations &lt;20 kpc. Using this catalog, we answer many questions regarding SMBH−galaxy coevolution during mergers. First, we confirm predictions that the AGN fraction peaks at SMBH pair separations &lt;10 kpc; specifically, we find that the fraction increases significantly at pair separations of &lt;4 kpc. Second, we find that AGNs in mergers are preferentially found in major mergers and that the fraction of AGNs found in mergers follows a logarithmic relation, decreasing as merger mass ratio increases. Third, we do not find that mergers (nor the major or minor merger subpopulations) trigger the most luminous AGNs. Finally, we find that nuclear column density, AGN luminosity, and host galaxy star formation rate have no dependence on SMBH pair separation or merger mass ratio in these systems, nor do the distributions of these values differ significantly from that of the overall AGN population.

A Catalog of Host Galaxies for WISE-selected AGN: Connecting Host Properties with Nuclear Activity and Identifying Contaminants

Abstract We present a catalog of physical properties for galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). By fitting broadband spectral energy distributions of sources in the WISE AGN Catalog with empirical galaxy and AGN templates, we derive photometric redshifts, AGN bolometric luminosities, measures of AGN obscuration, host galaxy stellar masses, and host galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) for 695,273 WISE AGN. The wide-area nature of this catalog significantly augments the known number of obscured AGN out to redshifts z ∼ 3 and will be useful for studies focused on AGN or their host galaxy physical properties. We first show that the most likely non-AGN contaminants are galaxies at redshifts z = 0.2–0.3, with relatively blue W1–W2 colors, and with high specific SFRs for which the dust continuum emission is elevated in the W2 filter. Toward increasingly lower redshifts, WISE AGN host galaxies have systematically lower specific SFRs relative to those of normal star-forming galaxies, likely due to decreased cold gas fractions and the time delay between global star formation and AGN triggering. Finally, WISE AGN obscuration is not strongly correlated with AGN bolometric luminosity but shows a significant negative correlation with the Eddington ratio. This result is consistent with a version of the receding torus model in which the obscuring material is located within the supermassive black hole gravitational sphere of influence and the dust inner radius increases due to radiation pressure.

Using strong lensing to understand the microJy radio emission in two radio quiet quasars at redshift 1.7

ABSTRACT The radio quasar luminosity function exhibits an upturn around $L_{6\rm \:GHz}=10^{23}$ W Hz−1 that is well-modelled by a star-forming host galaxy population. This distribution leads some authors to cite star formation as the main radio emission mechanism in so-called radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). Understanding the origin of RQQ radio emission is crucial for our understanding of quasar feedback mechanisms – responsible for the regulation of star formation in the host galaxy – and for understanding galaxy evolution as a whole. By observing RQQs that have been magnified by strong gravitational lensing, we have direct access to the RQQ population out to cosmic noon, where evidence for twin mini-jets has recently been found in a sub-$\mu$Jy RQQ. Here we present radio observations of two lensed RQQs using the VLA at 5 GHz, the latest objects to be observed in a sample of quadruply-imaged RQQs above −30°. In SDSS J1004+4112 we find strong evidence for AGN-related radio emission in the variability of the source. In PG 1115+080 we find tentative evidence for AGN-related emission, determined by comparing the radio luminosity with modelled dust components. If confirmed in the case of PG 1115+080, which lies on the radio–FIR correlation, the result would reinforce the need for caution when applying the correlation to rule out jet activity and when assuming no AGN heating of FIR-emitting dust when calculating star formation rates. Our programme so far has shown that the two of the faintest radio sources ever imaged show strong evidence for AGN-dominated radio emission.

We study the impact of active galactic nuclei (AGN) ionised outflows on star formation in high-redshift AGN host galaxies, by combining near-infrared integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations, mapping the Hαemission and [O III]λ5007 outflows, with matched-resolution observations of the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) emission. We present high-resolution ALMA Band 7 observations of eight X-ray selected AGN (L2 − 10 keV = 1043.8 − 1045.2erg s−1) atz ∼ 2 from the SUPER (SINFONI Survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback) sample, targeting the observed-frame 870 μm (rest-frame ∼260 μm) continuum at ∼2 kpc (0.2″) spatial resolution. The targets were selected among the SUPER AGN with an [O III] detection in the IFS maps and with a detection in the FIR photometry. We detected six out of eight targets with signal-to-noise ratioS/N ≳ 10 in the ALMA maps, from which we measured continuum flux densities in the range 0.27 − 2.58 mJy and FIR half-light radii (Re) in the range 0.8 − 2.1 kpc. The other two targets were detected with S/N of 3.6 and 5.9, which are insufficient for spatially resolved analysis. The FIRReof our sample are comparable to other AGN and star-forming galaxies at a similar redshift from the literature. However, combining our sample with the literature samples, we find that the mean FIR size in X-ray AGN (Re = 1.16 ± 0.11 kpc) is slightly smaller than in non-AGN (Re = 1.69 ± 0.13 kpc). From spectral energy distribution fitting, we find that the main contribution to the 260 μm flux density is dust heated by star formation, with ≤4% contribution from AGN-heated dust and ≤1% from synchrotron emission. The majority of our sample show different morphologies for the FIR (mostly due to reprocessed stellar emission) and the ionised gas emission (Hαand [O III], mostly due to AGN emission). This could be due to the different locations of dust and ionised gas, the different sources of the emission (stars and AGN), or the effect of dust obscuration. We are unable to identify any residual Hαemission, above that dominated by AGN, that could be attributed to star formation. Under the assumption that the FIR emission is a reliable tracer of obscured star formation, we find that the obscured star formation activity in these AGN host galaxies is not clearly affected by the ionised outflows. However, we cannot rule out that star formation suppression is happening on smaller spatial scales than the ones we probe with our observations (&lt; 2 kpc) or on different timescales.

Chronicling the Host Galaxy Properties of the Remarkable Repeating FRB 20201124A

Abstract We present the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder localization and follow-up observations of the host galaxy of the repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source, FRB 20201124A, the fifth such extragalactic repeating FRB with an identified host. From spectroscopic observations using the 6.5 m MMT Observatory, we derive a redshift z = 0.0979 ± 0.0001, a star formation rate inferred from Hα emission SFR(Hα) ≈ 2.1 M ⊙ yr−1, and a gas-phase metallicity of 12+log(O/H) ≈ 9.0. By jointly modeling the 12 filter optical−mid-infrared (MIR) photometry and spectroscopy of the host, we infer a median stellar mass of ∼2 × 1010 M ⊙, internal dust extinction A V ≈ 1–1.5 mag, and a mass-weighted stellar population age of ∼5–6 Gyr. Connecting these data to the radio and X-ray observations, we cannot reconcile the broadband behavior with strong active galactic nucleus activity and instead attribute the dominant source of persistent radio emission to star formation, likely originating from the circumnuclear region of the host. The modeling also indicates a hot dust component contributing to the MIR luminosity at a level of ∼10%–30%. We model the host galaxy’s star formation and mass assembly histories, finding that the host assembled &gt;90% of its mass by 1 Gyr ago and exhibited a fairly constant SFR for most of its existence, with no clear evidence of past starburst activity.
