Edited correspondence on the status of homosexuality in DSM-III.

In 1973, after a prolonged period of social agitation and professional conflict, the American Psychiatric Association deleted homosexuality from its official listing of psychiatric disorders (DSM-II). In its place a new classification for homosexuals distressed over their orientation was to be included in DSM-II. Four years later an acrimonious dispute surfaced over the status of homosexuality in the revised APA nomenclature of disorders (DSM-III). The edited correspondence of the participants in this dispute is presented here as a way of revealing the lingering conflict over homosexuality within American psychiatry.

Homosexual/Heterosexual status in boys at puberty: idiopathic adolescent gynecomastia and congenital virilizing adrenocorticism compared

In a non-biased sample of 10 boys with idiopathic adolescent gynecomastia (IAG) matched with eight boys with treated congenital virilizing adrenocorticism (CVA), there were three cases of homosexual gender status, all three in the IAG group; and no cases of transexualism, transvestism or gynemimesis. Signs of gender incongruity in the three cases preceded the onset of puberty and appearance of breast growth. If, in these cases, gynecomastia and homosexual status are etiologically connected, then the connection probably originates prenatally, when sexual brain differentiation is hormonally influenced.

To the Editor.— Action taken by the American Psychiatric Association in deleting homosexuality from the APA's official catalog of disorders counters influences toward paranoia. While paranoid tendencies are common in lesbianism, authorities who use Freudian theory to conclude that homosexual needs in themselves cause paranoid delusions seem to be mistaken. Psychometric data under study here from a group of 47 professional actors indeed do show that those men with exaggerated signs of paranoia are unusually feminine as well (η-correlation ratio =.71). However, the relationship is U-shaped; that is, actors who manifest the greatest femininity include both the most- and the least-paranoid members of the group. Those who readily accept their homosexuality are likely to escape the typical persecutory suspicion of the clandestines, appearing even less paranoid than heterosexually oriented actors.
