In terms of academic achievement, numerous studies confirm that home-schooling children match or surpass their conventional school counterparts. But little is known of the effects of the practice upon self-concept. This investigation found that ratings of self-concept of home-schooling children, as measured by the Piers-Harris Scale, exceeded significantly the norms for children educated in conventional schools. The study identified other home-schooling variables which related both positively and negatively with self-concept.
