Security Evaluation Method of Smart Home Cloud Platform

The application of artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) is becoming increasingly widespread. With its rapid development, it has raised many complex network security issues. These have brought crushing security threats and risks to all stakeholders. AIoT cloud platform in the smart home plays a vital role in the security management of devices and is the current research hotspot. This paper discusses the security of the AIoT cloud platform, represented by the smart home. The indicator system describing the protection of the smart home cloud platform is proposed, and the security risk evaluation method of the cloud service is formed. Based on the evaluation method, a lightweight security evaluation framework for smart home cloud service is designed to evaluate the typical cloud platform’s security. The evaluation identifies some technical and administrative issues. Finally, to improve the security of the cloud console of AIoT and discover potential security risks in time, a security self-test model of the scalable cloud console is proposed.

HomeCloud Framework for Priority aware VM Allocation and Network Bandwidth Provisioning

Various applications in a multi-tenant architecture based cloud computing comprises various requirements and priorities. Severe failure of a critical application may result if the network is congested in a data center. Hence, it is an important to use an efficient resource provisioning technique for ensuring transfer of high priority data to the other traffics still when the network is congested. Therefore, a new framework of Home Cloud architecture is proposed in this paper to provide an effective and flexible delivery of new applications in an edge-cloud architecture which integrates the two complementary technologies of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). In SDN infrastructure, this presents a priority aware resource placement algorithms by taking into consideration of both host and network resources. The Virtual Machines (VMs) of high priority applications are placed at the strongly connected hosts by introducing the priority aware VM allocation (PAVA) algorithm for reducing the possibility of causing network congestion by other tenants. It also guarantees the critical applications for a required bandwidth by means of allocating bandwidth through the setting of priority queues for each network connection within the network of data center handled by SDN controller. The simulation result of the proposed system shows that the combination of proposed approaches will allocate sufficient resources for high-priority applications within a Home Cloud data centre to meet the QoS requirements.

A Flash-Based SSD Cache Management Scheme for High Performance Home Cloud Storage

In the home cloud environment, storage performance is the most important factors affecting the user experience. In order to improve storage performance, we introduce a technique for managing flash-based storage devices as a cache. Although there are various studies on the use of flash caches, we focus on managing read requests that take into account flash memory characteristics and destaging methods from solid state drive cache to hard disk drives (HDDs) to improve performance. In this paper, we propose a scheme for managing flash-based solid state cache (SSC) called hybrid unit 2level-least recently used to improve input/output performance of HDD-based storage. Through the proposed scheme, cache hit ratio is increased and the number of disk access is reduced by keeping frequently accessed pages in SSC. In addition, the disk head movement is reduced when pages are destaged to disk by grouping write requested pages with adjacent pages. The number of cached pages is dynamically adjusted according to the ratio of read and write requests to improve performance on various workloads. For performance evaluation, we implemented the proposed scheme in a trace-based simulator. Performance evaluation shows up to 51% reduction in execution time compared to existing representative schemes.

Bandwidth management framework for smart homes using SDN: ISP perspective

This paper proposed a software-defined networking-based (SDN) quality of service (QoS) aware bandwidth management framework for thousands of IoT-enabled smart homes from ISP perspective. Each smart home equips with tens of IoT devices, and each smart home exploits a variety of services. The overall system architecture consists of SDN smart home cloud at ISP side, and massive SDN enabled smart homes. The smart home cloud interconnects with Smart Homes through OpenFlow protocol. With this architecture, we proposed a bandwidth allocation for smart home (BASH) strategy to calculate appropriate bandwidth for each service category according to distinct QoS requirements. ISP can thus use BASH to optimise bandwidth allocation of aggregated and classified services of smart homes. The experiment results show that the proposed framework can effectively enhance QoS and outperform the traditional ISP bandwidth allocation strategy in terms of average transfer ratio, average throughput, average delay and average jitter.

A Smart Home Design and Implementation Based on Kinect

We proposed a smart home cloud system based on the Kinect camera combining control unit of STM32 with SVM classifier and networking technology. Human skeleton-based identification and posture recognition is fulfilled with Kinect depth sensor, from which users can enter different positions according to their preferences for system to learn, ultimately allow appliances have accurate predictive features. Instead of using any third-party media to complete the home appliances control, our system applies face recognition and bone matching technology to open the door, or alarm stranger invasion. Together with child fall/rain protection window, home electric power detection and web controller, it can enhance the intelligent level and security capability of the current smart home system.

Power-saving control framework for cloud services based on set-top box

Recently, the more regulations of energy conservation have been emphasized, the more home appliance manufactures have made competitive efforts to improve the energy efficiency of their products. However, there have been no correlation analysis between energy-efficient home appliances and cloud technologies. While cloud services have been rapidly adopted in many service areas to guarantee a high return of investment (ROI) for service providers, Previous studies on power saving have been conducted to reduce the standby power consumption for home appliances, like a set-top box (STB), which can be worked as a thin client for cloud services, or have only shown power models of a virtual machine (VM) on the cloud side without considering the power consumption states of its corresponding thin clients As a result, this paper proposes a power-saving control framework (PSCF) that consumes low power levels for both on the cloud side and on a STB efficiently for providing cloud services. The experimental result shows that the proposed framework outperforms the experiment not applied with any other power saving method for cloud services in terms of power efficiency.

Resource orchestration for multi-task application in home-to-home cloud

Along with the increasing capability of consumer electronic devices, it becomes the new trend that the home cloud computing takes household consumer electronic devices as a sharing resource pool, which can bring great convenience to consumers. However, how to find the most suitable resources or services in the home cloud is a challenge for the consumers. When offloading a complicated application to the home cloud, each task of the application can be executed individually with its own computation, storage and bandwidth requirements. The heterogeneous consumer electronic devices that contain different performance metrics affect the destination choice. This paper proposes a distributed home-to-home cloud infrastructure where volunteer users allow the resources of their consumer electronic devices to be shared with the neighboring houses. By extending the home gateways, a decentralized controlling is responsible for resource monitoring, orchestration, task offload and migration. With consideration of load balance and volunteers' opinion, the resource orchestration is formulated as an optimization problem with one objective and multi-constraints. Finally, a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-based algorithm is used to obtain the approximate optimal solution. Simulation results show that the solution for all cases studied almost achieves 90% objective value in acceptable time1.

A solid state drive architecture with memory card modules

Solid State Drive (SSD) for the consumer market may not require extreme high performance, but it does want high density at a low cost. Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks (RAID) are built up by a group of independent disk drives, not inside a disk drive. This makes a RAID system not as inexpensive as expected in the beginning and in the end the system often becomes expensive, large in size and complexity. It is not well suited for consumer applications. This paper proposes a new structure, to build up a high density SSD in a RAID system by using SD or MMC/ eMMC modules instead of independent drives. A SSD controller chip with embedded RAID (eRAID) multiple level functions was designed and applied to verify this proposal. By using this controller and eMMC modules, a redundant array of independent modules (RAIM) is built up as an inexpensive single drive and proven to work. The result revealed that a RAIM can be a single SSD drive as well as a micro-RAID system. By utilizing RAIM SSD units a more sophisticated RAID system can be constructed at lower costs and greater performance in a much smaller configuration, which is more suitable as home cloud storage, etc.

It is important to improve the performance of storage in the home cloud environment within the virtualized IoT gateway since the performance of applications deeply depends on storage. Though SSD caching is applied in order to improve the storage, it is only used for read-cache due to the limitations of SSD such as poor write performance and small write endurance. However, it is important to improve performance of the write operation in the home cloud server, in order to improve the end-user experience. This paper propose a novel SSD caching which considers write-data as well as read-data. We validate the enhancement in the performance of random-write by transforming it to the sequential patterns.

Effective flash-based SSD caching for high performance home cloud server

In the home cloud environment, the storage performance of home cloud servers, which govern connected devices and provide resources with virtualization features, is critical to improve the end-user experience. To improve the storage performance of virtualized home cloud servers in a cost-effective manner, caching schemes using flash-based solid state drives (SSD) have been widely studied. Although previous studies successfully narrow the speed gap between memory and hard disk drives, they only focused on how to manage the cache space, but were less interested in how to use the cache space efficiently taking into account the characteristics of flash-based SSD. Moreover, SSD caching is used as a read-only cache due to two well-known limitations of SSD: slow write and limited lifespan. Since storage access in virtual machines is performed in a more complex and costly manner, the limitations of SSD affect more significantly the storage performance. This paper proposes a novel SSD caching scheme and virtual disk image format, named sequential virtual disk (SVD), for achieving high-performance home cloud environments. The proposed techniques are based on the workload characteristics, in which synchronous random writes dominate, while taking into consideration the characteristics of flash memory and storage stack of the virtualized systems. Unlike previous studies, SSD is used as a read-write cache in the proposed caching scheme to effectively mitigate the performance degradation of synchronous random writes. The prototype was evaluated with some realistic workloads, through which the developed scheme was shown to allow improvement of the storage access performance by 21% to 112%, with reduction in the number of erasures on SSD by about 56% on average.
