An Investigation of Holland Types and the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire‐Fifth Edition

The authors investigated the stability of the published Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire‐Fifth Edition (16PF; S. Conn & M. Rieke, 1994) predictors in predicting Holland types as measured by the Self‐Directed Search (SDS; J. Holland, B. Fritzsche, & A. Powell, 1994). Because the majority of the published regression equations contained unstable predictors, the authors developed modified multiple regression equations using the more stable predictors. However, these equations, although statistically significant, shared less than 50% of the variance with the criterion variable, suggesting limited practical utility or support for the domain overlap of the 16PF and the SDS. The authors recommend that the SDS be used when a measure of SDS types is needed.

The Relationship between Holland's Occupational Types and 16PF Global Factor Scores among University Students

The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between personality, as measured by the five global factors of Cattell's 16PF, and occupational interests, as measured by Holland's Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI). Data were obtained from 122 undergraduate students studying various degree programs at a Melbourne university. Partial support was found for the hypothesis that vocational interests correlate with personality measures. The hypothesis that students completing different vocationally orientated degree programs would produce discrete personality profiles received limited support. Distinctly different RIASEC profiles, however, were evident across the four course groups. It was concluded that an understanding of both vocational interest and personality theory would enhance the services provided by career guidance professionals.

The Use of API Career Factors as Holland Occupational Types

As a modern version of the 16PF, the Adult Personality Inventory (API) was designed to report scale scores that provided more information and were more useful to psychologists than the underlying 16 factors. This was accomplished by generating a set of 21 scales that are linear combinations of the original 16 factors. Six of the API scales have been labeled the Career Factors and may correspond to Holland's occupational types. The purpose of the present study was to help determine the extent to which the API Career Factors could indeed be employed as Holland occupational types. To make this determination, mean API profiles for various occupational groups were matched with occupational groups from an index of occupational codes provided by Holland and tested for profile congruency. The results indicated that there exists a good degree of congruence between the Holland occupational codes and the API Career Factors. It was concluded that, in general, the API Career Factors can be conceptualized as Holland occupational types and used accordingly.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL PERSONALITY IN RELATION TO HOLLAND'S OCCUPATIONAL TYPES

ABSTRACT This study examines the relationship of the entrepreneurial personality, measured by The Sixteen Personality Factors Questionnaire (1), to 16PF profiles for Holland occupational types reported in previous literature. The sample of entrepreneurs (N = 136) are described on a number of demographic variables and the overall personality profile is compared to those of the groups composing Holland's types. In relation to Holland's six types, the entrepreneurs were distinguished by high scores on four personality factors describing them as more persistent, suspicious, self-sufficient and tense, but somewhat similar on other traits. Results of the calculated measures of distance in a profile-fitting analysis revealed that the entrepreneur profile was significantly distant from profiles for all six Holland's types, but less distant from the Realistic and Enterprising types. Discriminant analysis of Holland's occupational types using the sixteen personality factor questionnaire

Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF) profiles for 69 occupational groups were analyzed according to Holland's six occupational types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. Three discriminant functions, labeled Independence, Extraversion, and Anxiety, enabled correct classification of 75% of the groups to Holland's types. Personality profiles for the six occupational types based on standard 16 PF scale descriptions were highly consistent with Holland's characterizations of the types. A two-dimensional graphic plot of the group centroids corresponded exactly to Holland's hypothesized ordering of occupational types.

Personality, husband-wife similarity, and Holland's occupational types

The present investigation had two purposes. The first was to investigate the generalizability of the theorized personality characteristics of men within Holland's occupational types to groups of men typed by their actual vocations instead of their vocational interests. The second purpose was to investigate the extent to which the wives of men in each of the occupational groups were similar to their husbands in terms of personality characteristics. Multiple discriminant analysis of the groups' 16PF scores resulted in significant overall groups differentiation and in two significant discriminant functions labeled tender-mindedness and self-confidence. The second finding was that Social and Enterprising men were significantly similar to their wives on personality dimensions consistent with the defining characteristics of the respective Holland groups. Implications of the present results and suggestions for future research are presented.

Personality correlates of Holland's occupational types: A cross cultural study

Recent studies have investigated the personality traits of persons in Holland's six occupational categories. In the present study the generalizability of Holland's characterizations of adults within the occupational categories was investigated in a group of 402 Mexican-Americans. Occupational Scale scores on the Kuder Occupational Interest Survey were used to classify subjects into Holland's occupational types. Multiple discriminant analysis of groups' Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey scale scores resulted in significant overall groups differentiation and two significant discriminant functions for males but no significant results for females. The personality characteristics of the male groups provide strong support for the generalizability of Holland's characterizations to Mexican-American males.
