Frequency of counselee “dropout” and its relationship to counselor orientation or technique were studied during the 12 weeks of the secondary school supervised counseling practicum at Arizona State University. Findings were established through use of a questionnaire completed by the 30 regular session NDEA Institute enrollees who participated in the counseling practicum. Results of the questionnaire revealed a relationship between the counseling approach recommended to the enrollees by the six practicum supervisors and the number of counselee “dropouts”; the more “client‐centered” the approach used, the greater the number of “dropouts.” The results seem to imply that a somewhat structured, clinical approach is still recommended for secondary school counseling.
