Objective: To determine the prevalence of undescended testis (UDT) cases in the integrated health service post of the Wagir health center working area, the level of parental knowledge of UDT disorders, and to find out what factors affect the delay in UDT treatment. Materials and Methods: Physical examination by a urology specialist education doctor and distributing questionnaires to parents of toddlers with UDT disorders which were then analyzed with SPSS software using the chi square method followed by the binary logistic regression method. Result : Factors that were found to significantly affect the delay in UDT treatment included antenatal care history (sig. = 0.023) and parental knowledge about UDT (sig.=0.044). Factors found to be less significant in influencing the delay in UDT treatment included affordability of health facilities, insurance ownership, parents' monthly income, latest education, and family history. Conclusion: The prevalence of this with the majority of the population having poor knowledge about UDT. Notification rates for syphilis in women of reproductive age and congenital syphilis in Australia, 2011-2021: a retrospective cohort analysis of national notifications data.

To estimate notification rates for infectious syphilis in women of reproductive age and congenital syphilis in Australia. Retrospective cohort study; analysis of national infectious syphilis and enhanced congenital syphilis surveillance data. Women aged 15-44 years diagnosed with infectious syphilis, and babies with congenital syphilis, Australia, 2011-2021. Numbers and rates of infectious syphilis notifications, by Indigenous status and age group; numbers and rates of congenital syphilis, by Indigenous status of the infant; antenatal care history for mothers of infants born with congenital syphilis. During 2011-2021, 5011 cases of infectious syphilis in women aged 15-44 years were notified. The notification rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women rose from 56 (95% confidence interval [CI], 45-65) cases per 100 000 in 2011 to 227 (95% CI, 206-248) cases per 100 000 population in 2021; for non-Indigenous women, it rose from 1.1 (95% CI, 0.8-1.4) to 9.2 (95% CI, 8.4-10.1) cases per 100 000 population. The notification rate was higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women than for non-Indigenous women (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 23.1; 95% CI, 19.7-27.1), lower for 15-24- (IRR, 0.7; 95% CI, 0.6-0.9) and 35-44-year-old women (IRR, 0.6; 95% CI, 0.5-0.7) than for 25-34-year-old women, and higher in remote regions than in major cities (IRR, 2.7; 95% CI, 2.2-3.8). During 2011-2021, 74 cases of congenital syphilis were notified, the annual number increasing from six in 2011 to a peak of 17 in 2020; the rate was consistently higher among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants than among non-Indigenous infants (2021: 38.3 v 2.1 per 100 000 live births). The mothers of 32 infants with congenital syphilis (43%) had not received antenatal care. The number of infectious syphilis notifications for women of reproductive age increased in Australia during 2011-2021, as did the number of cases of congenital syphilis. To avert congenital syphilis, antenatal screening of pregnant women, followed by prompt treatment for infectious syphilis when diagnosed, needs to be improved.

Dietary Diversity and Associated Factors among Children 6-23 Months Old in Ethiopia: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Feeding diversified food for children is the major indicator of nutritional quality and adequacy that is crucial during the complementary feeding period for infants and young children aged 6-23 months. Ensuring diversified food is highly essential for the normal growth and development of the infant and young children. In Ethiopia, malnutrition and food insecurity remain prevalent, underscoring the need to understand and improve dietary diversity among children. The primary objective of this review was to determine the pooled prevalence of dietary diversity and its associated factors among children aged 6-23 months in Ethiopia. We thoroughly searched some electronic databases, including Pub Med, Africa Index Medicus, Science Direct, Hinari, and Google Scholar, to perform a meta-analysis. Excel was used to extract and combine the data, while Stata 17 was used for statistical analysis. To estimate pooled prevalence rates and related associated factors, we used a random-effect model and the Der Simonian-Laird technique. The I2-test was utilized to examine heterogeneity, and funnel plots, in conjunction with Egger's and Begg's tests, were employed to investigate publication bias. This review analyzed 42 full-text studies, finding a pooled prevalence of 26.78% (95% confidence interval (CI): 23.35-30.21) with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 98.95%). Maternal education levels-college & above Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR: 5.377, 95% CI: 3.116-9.279), secondary and above (AOR: 3.324, 95% CI: 1.939-5.700), primary (AOR: 3.065, 95% CI: 2.275-3.129), and formal education (AOR: 2.484, 95% CI: 1.722-3.583)-showed higher odds than counterparts. Similarly, fathers' education-secondary and above (AOR: 2.837, 95% CI: 1.981-4.065) and primary (AOR: 2.082, 95% CI: 1.016-4.266)-and father's occupation as merchant (AOR: 2.739, 95% CI: 1.355-5.539), and mother's occupation as housewife (AOR: 3.636, 95% CI: 2.457-5.381) showed higher odds. Additionally, male child sex (AOR: 1.877, 95% CI: 1.185-2.972), child age 18-23 months (AOR: 2.470, 95% CI: 1.568-3.987), and 12-17 months (AOR: 2.460, 95% CI: 1.914-3.163) indicated higher odds than counterparts. Having Postnatal Care (PNC) follow-up, counseling on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices, and no history of child illness were associated with higher odds (AOR: 3.155, 95% CI: 2.104-4.732), (AOR: 2.960, 95% CI: 2.288-3.829), and (AOR: 2.420, 95% CI: 1.765-3.318), respectively. Maternal knowledge of dietary diversity, urban residency, Antenatal Care (ANC) follow-up, child growth monitoring, and media exposure also showed higher odds. Similarly, maternal age groups 25-34 years and 35-44 years had higher odds compared to those aged 15-24 years. Other factors associated with higher odds included home grading, food security, institutional delivery, availability of cow milk, and household wealth index. Among Ethiopian children aged 6-23 months, the prevalence of recommended dietary diversity feeding practices was remarkably low, with only about 25% meeting the minimum recommended diversified food. The scientific predictors factor affecting dietary diversity included maternal media exposure, place of delivery, food security, urban residency, availability of cow milk, child growth monitoring, age, and knowledge of IYCF practices; paternal factors like education and occupation; child-related variables like age, sex, and history of illness; and history of ANC and PNC.

Development of pregnancy class with husband's assistance on the outcome of teenage pregnancy.

Teenage pregnancy is an international phenomenon without a definite solution to date. Globally, an estimated 16 million girls aged 15-19 give birth each year. Husbands need to play their assistance role in order to thwart the negative impact of the outcome of teenage pregnancy. To identify the effect of the development of Pregnancy Classes with the Husband's Assistance on the Outcome of Teenage Pregnancy in the Dayak community, Central Kalimantan. This was a quasi-experimental study with the posttest-only non-equivalent control group design involving the husband's assistance in pregnancy classes. The respondents were 60 individuals where 30 of them were given the pregnancy class assistance intervention while the other 30 were not given any intervention (control group). Pregnancy class with Assistance by the husband increases positive pregnancy outcomes 2.4 times compared to without the husband's assistance. Family support increases positive pregnancy outcomes 2.5 times compared to pregnant women without support from the family. Pregnant women that are highly motivated regarding antenatal care are likely to have positive pregnancy outcomes 5.4 times greater than pregnant women with low motivation. Based on the analysis, then the variables that have no effect are the history of antenatal care, frequency of antenatal care, and support from health workers. Pregnancy class with husband's assistance affects positive outcomes of teenage pregnancy. Other factors with meaningful influence on pregnancy outcomes include family support and motivation to seek teenage antenatal care. Furthermore, other factors that have no influence include the teenager's age, history of antenatal care, frequency of antenatal care, and support from health workers. An intervention is needed that involves the husband/partner in the form of active assistance.

Factors for Decision to C-section Delivery in Indonesia: Insights from IDHS 2017

Introduction: Cesarean delivery (C-sections) showed 17.6% of all deliveries in Indonesia, which exceeded the WHO standard of 15%. C-sections in government hospitals reached 20-25%; in private hospitals, the number was higher, above 30%. Purpose: The study aimed to determine the factors influencing the decision of cesarean section delivery in Indonesia. Method: The study used a cross-sectional design. Data came from the Indonesian Health Demographic Survey (IDHS) 2017. The population and samples were 2,464 women aged 15-49 years—data analysis using chi-square test and multiple logistic regression. Result: The study found that the proportion of cesarean delivery in private hospitals reached 53.8%. Factors related to the decision to c-section delivery (p<0.05) were maternal education, place of residence, domicile island, spouse's occupation and education, wealth index, health insurance, and antenatal care history. Conclusion: The wealth index was the dominant factor for the decision to c-section delivery. The government is expected to be able to improve the quality of services and facilities in cesarean section delivery by government hospitals so that it can be the alternative decision for the community with a variety of wealth index and education backgrounds.

Acute Kidney Injury Due to Obstetric Complications.

To evaluate the factors, causes, and outcomes of acute kidney injury (AKI) among pregnant females admitted to a tertiary care hospital. An observational study. Place and Duration of the Study: Department of Nephrology, Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad, from April to October 2022. Patients with AKI due to obstetric complications were enrolled and followed for three months. AKI was defined as a rise in serum creatinine of 0.3 mg/dl within 48 hours, an increase in serum creatinine of 1.5 times baseline value within the previous 7 days, or a decrease in urine output of 0.5 ml/kg/hr for 6 hours. Good antenatal care was defined as at least one visit to a healthcare provider during pregnancy. Patients with the history of diabetes or hypertension, chronic kidney disease or history of renal stones were excluded from the study. Favourable outcomes such as complete recovery were assessed at the time of discharge in terms of renal function testing. Patients who had normal renal function, adequate urine output, and became dialysis independent were labelled as completely recovered. Unfavourable outcomes were assessed in terms of progress towards either chronic kidney disease or death. Of the initially enrolled 66 patients, 6 were lost to follow-up and 60 patients were included in the final analysis. The mean age was 28.67±5.41 years. Only 2 patients had received good antenatal care (3.3%). Puerperal sepsis was the primary aaetiology of AKI in 20 patients (33.3%), antepartum haemorrhage in 14 patients (23.3%), and postpartum haemorrhage in 16 (26.7%) patients. In eight cases, there was combined haemorrhage and sepsis. Other causes of AKI were pre-eclampsia and placentae abruption. Nine of 60 patients were treated conservatively, while 51(85%) were treated with dialysis. Five patients died (8.3%), fifteen recovered (25%), and 40(66.7%) patients who needed dialysis at the time of discharge acquired chronic renal disease throughout the three-month follow-up period. An overwhelming majority of obstetric-related AKI patients had a suboptimal antenatal care history. The most frequent aetiology was puerperal sepsis, followed by haemorrhage. Majority of the patients with required hemodialysis and most of them did not recover in three months resulting in dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease. Practice of Non-Institutional Delivery and Its Associated Factors Among Women Who Gave Birth in Southern Ethiopia, 2022.

Since 2000, the Ethiopian ministries of health and other stakeholders have taken some measures to enhance institutional delivery. However, the Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey 2019 report indicated that more than 50% of Ethiopian reproductive-age women gave birth outside health facilities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the practice of noninstitutional delivery among women who gave birth at Boloso Bombe Woreda (district) in southern Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out on 252 study participants from June to July 2022 in Boloso Bombe Woreda. Data collection was done using a structured questionnaire and systematic sampling techniques were used to select the study subjects. Data were entered into the EPI data, version 3.1, and analyzed using SPSS, version 25. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs), along with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were used and the level of statistical significance was declared at a p-value of 0.05. In this study, 252 participants completed the survey, with a 97% response rate. The prevalence of noninstitutional delivery among study participants was 68.7% (95% CI: 63.1-72.9). In this study, mother's occupation, such as working as a daily laborer (AOR = 3.6; 95% CI [1.2-11.2]); absence of antenatal care history (AOR = 3.3; 95% CI [1.3-8.6]); poor knowledge of labor complications (AOR = 3.5; 95% CI [2.2-6.1]); and place of first delivery (AOR = 8.7; 95% CI [3.2-23]) were factors that were positively and significantly associated with the practice of noninstitutional delivery. However, last pregnancy planned was negatively associated with the practice of noninstitutional delivery (AOR = 0.4; 95% CI [0.2-0.8]). This study indicated that the majority of study participants practiced noninstitutional delivery in this study area. Therefore, we strongly recommend that all responsible bodies should take immediate action to reduce the practice of noninstitutional delivery and improve those identified factors.

Associations between low birth weight and perinatal asphyxia: A hospital-based study.

To investigate the associations between low birth weight (LBW) and perinatal asphyxia by a hospital-based study. The participants of this study were mothers who gave birth at our hospital in 2018. They were divided into case group and control group according to their children's asphyxia status. The bivariable and multivariable logistics regression were used to identify maternal and newborn factors with perinatal asphyxia. A total of 150 participants were enrolled in this study, including 50 participants in the case group and 100 participants in the control groups. The bivariate logistic regression analysis showed the significant relationship of LBW, the mother's age which was less than 20 years, and the gestational age with perinatal asphyxia (P < .05). The multivariate analysis was shown that LBW, male newborns, mothers who had preeclampsia/eclampsia, or mothers who were primipara or whose gestational age more than 37 weeks had higher risks of perinatal asphyxia (P < .05). However, there were no significant relationships of the age of mother or history of antenatal care with perinatal asphyxia. LBW of infants contributes to the higher risk of perinatal asphyxia.

The Relationship between Maternal Anemia History and Nutritional Status of 0-12 Month Infants in West Kupang District

Background: Maternal anemia has a high prevalence in Indonesia, where this condition can affect the fulfillment of nutritional intake for both mother and fetus and if not handled properly can affect nutritional status and cause metabolic problems in the baby. Aim: Analyzing the relationship between a history of maternal anemia and nutritional status in infants aged 0-12 months in West Kupang District, Kupang Regency. Method: This study involved 67 subjects aged 0-12 months who had MCH books and were fully stocked and obtained approval from biological mothers for their children to be the subjects of this study. The type of research design used by researchers is cross- sectional research. In this study, researchers analyzed the relationship of anemia that occurs in mothers during pregnancy with the nutritional status of 0-12 months infants using a retrospective approach by looking at the history of Antenatal Care (ANC) in the mother's MCH book, as well as making anthropometric measurements on the subjects. Data analysis used the Shapiro-Wilk test for the normality test and the Spearman's rho test for the correlation test. Results: There was no significant correlation between a history of maternal anemia with the nutritional status of babies 0-12 months at WHZ with p value = 0.5, WAZ with p value = 0.1, HAZ with p value = 0.7, BAZ with p value = 0.8. Conclusion: There is no relationship between the history of maternal anemia and the nutritional status of babies 0-12 months in West Kupang District.

The Relationship between Maternal Anemia History and Exclusive Breastfeeding with Stunting Incidence in Infants 6-12 Months in West Kupang District

Background: Stunting in the infant can caused by a history of exclusive breastfeeding and report of anemia during pregnancy and can also affect growth in the first 1000 days of life. Research Objective: Research objective was to identify the relationship between the mother's history of anemia during pregnancy on the antenatal care examination and the history of exclusive breastfeeding given to infants aged 6-12 months with stunting in Kuanheun Village and Bolok Village. Method: The method is Cross-sectional. This research was assess in august-September 2022. The total number of respondents was 39 people. The inclusion criteria used; like to become research respondents, respondents who had toddlers aged 6-12 months in Kuanheun Village and Bolok Village, and respondents who brought Maternal and Child Health (MCH) books of the study subject. The data type used was the history of Antenatal Care (ANC) in the mother's MCH book and anthropometric measurements on the infant. Results: Spearman's rho test there was no significant association between the history of ANC K4 anemia and the incidence of stunting in infants 6-12 months p = 0.7 &gt;0,05 and there was no significant association between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting in infants 6-12 months p = 0.1 &gt;0,05. Conclusion: There is no relationship between the report of anemia in ANC K4 and the history of exclusive breastfeeding with the incidence of stunting in infants aged 6-12 months in Kuanheun Village and Bolok Village.

Comparison of characteristics between adolescent and adult pregnant women who used methamphetamine: a retrospective study in a tertiary hospital

PurposeThis study aims to examine the characteristics of pregnant women who used methamphetamine to determine the differences in characteristics between teenagers (aged under 20 or 20–25 years) and adult women who used methamphetamine during this period.Design/methodology/approachThis retrospective study extracted data from the medical records of obstetric patients who gave birth between 2011 and 2015 in a tertiary hospital in Thailand. All included patients were diagnosed with amphetamine use disorder. Demographic data, history of antenatal care, history of substance use and psychiatric evaluations were recorded.FindingsFour hundred and twelve patients were recruited for analysis. Of these, 194 (53.4%) did not attend regular antenatal care, 326 (92.1%) had unplanned pregnancies and 42 (12.5%) had a history of abortions. Socially, 47 patients (21.7%) reported drug use in their families and 160 (49.5%) reported a history of parental separation. Compared with the adult and 20–25 years groups, the < 20 years group tended to have a lower educational level, have experienced parental separation and had more regular antenatal care.Research limitations/implicationsPregnant teenagers with methamphetamine use had psychosocial difficulties. Physicians should be aware of these psychosocial issues, including education and family planning.Originality/valueThese findings showed that pregnant women who used methamphetamine faced psychosocial difficulties, unplanned pregnancies and inadequate antenatal care. Adult and teenage pregnant women who used methamphetamine differed in some ways. For example, teenage pregnant women tended to be of a lower education level, experienced parental separation and had a history of more frequent antenatal care. Further longitudinal research exploring the outcomes of mothers who used methamphetamine and their children is needed to build on the existing evidence.

Prevalence and associated factors of birth injury among neonates admitted at neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in governmental hospitals of Southwest Ethiopian people regional state, Ethiopia: A multicenteric cross-sectional study.

Neonatal birth injury is the functional or structural damage of the new-born during child birth. Fetal related factors such as macrosomia, fetal height, fetal weight, and prematurity; maternal related factors such as overly young and old maternal age, parity, poor maternal health, and pelvic anomalies contribute to neonatal birth injury. Labor and delivery related factors including prolonged labor, fetal mal-presentation and mal-position, cesarean and instrumental deliveries also predispose the neonate to birth injury. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence and associated factors of birth injury among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Governmental Hospitals of Southwest Ethiopia. To assess the prevalence and associated factors of birth injury among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in governmental hospitals in Southwest Ethiopia. Hospital-based cross-sectional study design was implemented at Mizan-Tepi University Teaching Hospital, Bonga Gebretsadik Shawo General Hospital, and Tepi General Hospital. A total of 1,315 neonates were included in the study using systematic random sampling techniques. Data was entered using Epi-Data version 4.2 and exported to SPSS version 21 for analysis. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to see the association between the dependent and independent variable. The prevalence of neonatal birth injury was 16.7%. Predictors such as primipara, no formal education, mothers with no antenatal care, and mothers whose occupational status were unemployed were 12.27, 2.52, 2.40, and 4.26 times more likely to develop neonatal birth injuries than their counterparts, respectively. Whereas, maternal age within the age range of 25-34 years, and neonates delivered via instrumental delivery were 6.68, and 2.81 times more likely to develop neonatal birth injury compared to those whose age was greater than 34 years and neonates delivered through Cesarean section, respectively. The magnitude of birth injury in the current study was significantly high. Primiparity, mothers with no history of antenatal care follow up, uneducated women, unemployed women, mode of delivery, and maternal age between 25 and 34 years were strong predictors associated with neonatal birth injury. Therefore, comprehensive maternal health care such as antenatal care follow up and health institution delivery should be promoted and well addressed to all reproductive age women and special attention should be given particularly to pregnant women in order to mitigate problems related to childbirth.

Pattern of Congenital Central Nervous System Anomalies Among Newborns at A Regional Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in Makurdi, North Central Nigeria

Background: Congenital anomalies of the central nervous system (CNS) are important causes of childhood mortality, chronic illness and disability. They have significant implications for childhood growth and development particularly in resource limited settings. Areview of their occurrence is valuable to instituting preventive and curative health care services.Objective: To document the pattern of congenital CNS anomalies in our practice Subjects and Method: A retrospective study of all neonatal admissions with congenital anomalies of the CNS (Patients) admitted into the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) of Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi-Nigeria, between June 2013 andJanuary 2016. The anomalies were classified according to the ICD 10 Classification. Other parameters assessed were: age at admission, gestational age at delivery, family history of congenital anomalies, maternal age, social class, history of ante natal care, and admission outcome.Results: A total of 73 (9.3%) out of the admitted 785 neonates had congenital anomalies and majority (28, 38.4%) were of the CNS. The affected patients had a male preponderance (20, 71.4%). Myelomeningocele was the commonest CNS anomaly (20, 71.4 %). Poor antenatal care, lack of periconceptional folic acid (pFA) intake, late folic acid supplementation, low socio economic class, and late presentation were all associated with the incidence of congenital CNS anomalies. The patients had a neonatal mortality rate of 7.1% over the study period of 30 months (2.8% per year).Conclusion: Congenital CNS anomalies were the predominant congenital anomalies, and myelomeningocele was the commonest. The study underscores the need to institute a comprehensive healthcare programme for the prevention and management of congenital anomalies of the CNS in our practice.

Predictors of time to recovery from postpartum hemorrhage in Debre Markos comprehensive specialized hospital, Northwest, Ethiopia, 2020/21

BackgroundPostpartum hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal deaths worldwide. Early recovery is a performance indicator and better health outcome of patients with postpartum hemorrhage. Therefore, this study aimed to assess time to recovery from postpartum hemorrhage and its predictors in Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia, 2020.MethodsA retrospective follow-up study was conducted among 302 women who were diagnosed with postpartum hemorrhage from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2020 at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Consecutive sampling technique was employed. To show the statistical significant difference between each group of variables, log rank test was used. Kaplan Meier analysis to estimate time to recovery and cox proportional-hazard regression analysis to determine independent predictors were carried out cautiously. Adjusted hazard ratio used to determine the strength of association.ResultThe median recovery time from postpartum hemorrhage was 13 h with range of (10 to 17 h). Blood transfusion (AHR: 1.8, 95% CI (1.39, 2.57)), NASG utilization (AHR: 6.5, 95% CI (4.58, 9.42)) fluid resuscitation (AHR 2.9, 95% CI (1.48, 5.54)), active management of third stage of labor (AHR: 1.7, 95% CI (1.18, 2.45)) and history of antenatal care follow-up (AHR: 2.6, 95% CI (1.91, 3.56)) were the predictors, which shorten the recovery time. Comorbidities like anemia at the time of admission (AHR: 0.62 95% CI (0.44, 0.89)), retroviral infection (AHR: 0.33, 95% CI (0.16, 0.67)) and Hepatitis B-Virus infection (AHR: 0.52, 95% CI (0.32, 0.82)) delay the recovery rate from postpartum hemorrhage.ConclusionMothers in North-West Ethiopia stays morbid from postpartum hemorrhage for more than half a day. Their recovery time was affected by Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment utilization, implementation of emergency management components like blood transfusion and fluid resuscitation, history of antenatal care follow up, and being comorbid with viral infections. Non-pneumatic anti-shock garment application to every mother with postpartum hemorrhage and implementation of proper emergency management approach are vital for rapid recovery from postpartum hemorrhage.

Evaluation of risk factors for neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

Aim: Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a serious condition in neonates and is associated with neuromuscular dysfunction and death. In this study, we aimed to investigate potential risk factors for neonatal HIE.Methods: A retrospective case–control study was conducted on infants admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit between 2015 and 2020. Infants born at ≥36 weeks of gestation and diagnosed with HIE were included in the case group. For each case, 4 gestational agematched infants without HIE were selected and included in the control group. The groups were compared in terms of maternal demographic characteristics, pregnancy characteristics, and birth-related factors.Results: The study included 75 infants with HIE and 300 controls. Nulliparity, history of antenatal care, medical complications during pregnancy, prolonged difficult birth, abnormal fetal heart rate, mode of delivery, and acute birth complications were found to be significantly associated with HIE in univariate analysis. In multivariate logistic analysis, the lack of antenatal care, abnormal fetal heart rate (FHR), and acute birth complication were the strongest factors associated with neonatal HIE.Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that the lack of antenatal care, abnormal FHR, and acute birth complications were risk factors for the development of HIE. Ensuring that pregnant women receive adequate antenatal care and applying necessary obstetric measures may help to reduce the HIE incidence.

Proportion and Outcome of Induction of Labor Among Mothers Who Delivered in Teaching Hospital, Southwest Ethiopia.

Background: Despite the induction of labor (IOL) having had some undesired consequences, it also has several benefits for maternal and perinatal outcomes. This study aimed to assess the proportion and outcome of IOL among mothers who delivered in Teaching Hospital, southwest Ethiopia.Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from June 10 to June 20, 2019, among 294 mothers who gave birth between November 30, 2018, and May 30, 2019, by reviewing their cards using a structured checklist to assess the prevalence, outcome, and consequences of induction of labor. A binary logistic regression analysis was computed to look for the association between outcome variables and independent variables.Results: The prevalence of labor induction was 20.4%. The most commonly reported cause of induction was preeclampsia (41.6%). The factors associated with IOL were mothers aged 25–34 years [AOR = 2.55, 95% CI (1.18–5.50)] and ≥35 years [AOR = 10.6, 95% CI (4.20–26.9)], having no history of antenatal care [AOR = 2.12, 95% CI (1.10–4.07)], and being Primipara AOR = 2.33, 95% CI (1.18–3.24)]. Of the 60 induced mothers, 23.3% had failed induction. The proportion of mothers with dead fetal outcomes and maternal complications was 5 and 41.7%, respectively. The unfavorable Bishop Score before induction [AOR = 1.85, 95% CI (1.32–4.87)] and induction using misoprostol [AOR = 1.48, 95% CI (1.24–5.23)] were the factors associated with failed induction of labor.Conclusion: The prevalence of induced labor was considerably higher than rates in other Ethiopian studies; however, the prevalence of induction failure was comparable to other studies done in Ethiopia. The study found that Bishop's unfavorable score before induction and induction using misoprostol was the factor associated with unsuccessful induction. Therefore, the health professionals should confirm the favorability of the cervical status before the IOL to increase the success rate of induction of labor.

Low birth weight risk factors in Basra city

Introduction: Low birth weight is the best indicator of the impact in the health system and the best predictor of mortality and morbidity in the neonatal, post neonatal and childhood periods. Objectives: This study was planned to study the association between birth weight and selected risk factors in Basrah governorate with special reference to: Socio demographic factors, Present obstetric history, Past obstetric history, History of Ante Natal Care, and Medical history. Methods: This is hospital- based cross sectional study was conducted on 362 infants delivered and /or admitted to AL-Basrah-Maternity and Children Hospital. The data were collected through direct interview of the mothers using a special questionnaire form designed for the study purpose. The questionnaire included information about the following aspects socio-demographic characteristics and other clinical characteristic. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 15. Results: The highest percentage of LBW was found among births for mothers who finished their primary education or less including illiterate, mothers in the age group30- 39 years, employed mothers, history of complications during pregnancy, preterm births, previous history of having LBW infant and short preceding birth interval (≤6 months) Conclusion The factors which found significantly associated with LBW included: low education level, complication during pregnancy, previous history of LBW, preterm delivery, short preceding birth interval- ,No significant association was found between birth weight and the following factors, parent's age, maternal occupation, gravidity, and bad previous obstetric history, low number of ANC visits. Secondary Syphilis During Pregnancy: The Importance of Screening and Clinical Management

Background: Syphilis is one of the most serious sexually transmitted diseases worldwide, and has tremendous consequences for the mother and her developing fetus if left untreated. The burden of morbidity and mortality due to congenital syphilis is high. Purpose: Screening and prompt to know the importance of treatment of syphilis during pregnancy. Case: A 32-year-old multigravida in 5 months of pregnancy presented with multiple raised lesions over her labia. It was accompanied by fluor and smelly fishy odor. There was no history of genital ulcers in either spouse and no history of sexual promiscuity. History of antenatal care in public health showed non-reactive status of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. Clinical examination revealed multiple flat, moist warts over her labia mayora and minora, and multiple roseola syphilitica on the plantar pedis sinistra. Darkfield microscopic examination presence spirochete, venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) titer was 1:16 and T. pallidum particle agglutination assay (TPHA) titer was 1:2560. Obstetric ultrasonography examination was suggestive no mayor congenital abnormalities. Both of serology VDRL and TPHA were non-reactive in her husband. Significant of lesion improvement and decrease a fourfold titer serologic in VDRL (1:4) and TPHA (1:320) as follow-up 3 months after being treated with single intra-muscular injections of benzathine penicillin 2.4 million units. Discussion: Coordinated prenatal care and treatment are vital. It’s implemented before the fourth month of pregnancy to reduce vertical transmission and all associated side effects of congenital syphilis. Penicillin is highly efficacious in maternal syphilis and prevention of congenital syphilis. Conclusion: Universal screening and adequate pregnancy care must be a priority.

Maternal Characteristics Mediating the Impact of Household Poverty on the Nutritional Status of Children Under 5 Years of Age in Bangladesh

We explored the maternal determinants that mediate the effect of household poverty on childhood undernutrition. We used the population-based Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey data from 2014 for demographic characteristics, child and maternal factors. Of the 7173 under-5 children, 3456 (48.2%) had undernutrition. The prevalence of undernutrition was less common in wealthy households (poorest vs richest: adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] = 1.37), mothers having history of antenatal care (ANC) visits (no visit vs ≥4 visits: aPR = 1.22), maternal higher education (no education vs higher education: aPR = 1.54), and mothers with good nutritional status (underweight vs healthy: aPR = 1.13). The risk of undernutrition (37.1%) was attributed to household wealth, mediated 55% by maternal factors; of which 20% by maternal education, 21% by ANC visits, and 14% by maternal nutritional status. Our study findings outlined higher maternal education, ≥4 ANC visits and maternal good nutritional status in mediating the impact of household wealth on childhood nutrition.
