A Study of the Longevity of Males at different periods in the History of Great Britain and Ireland from the Sixteenth to the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, based on Data from the “Dictionary of National, Biography” and “Burke's Peerage and Baronetage.”

The life tables that have been constructed from the recorded mortality in England and Wales as a whole at more or less regular intervals since registration of death was introduced in 1837, and those that have been prepared for special districts and cities at various times since that date, afford accurate information regarding the average length of life at different periods during the greater part of last century. There is still comparatively little known, however, about the mean duration of life, and the conditions of health on which it so largely depends, amongst those who lived in the British Isles in pre-registration times and the present paper contains the results of and attempt to supplement existing knowledge on this subject. The data on which the paper is based have been derived from two sources, namely, the Index and Epitome of the Dictionary of National Biography and Burke' Peerage and Baronetage. In the first of these are records of the dates of birth and death with brief summaries of the life histories of persons who were selected as being wminent in various spheres of life in the British Isles and the Colonies from the earliest historical period; in the second are given the genealogical histories of members of the different titled families.

Local Natural History in Great Britain

LOCAL scientific societies have their distinct and *-' special place, with its incumbent responsibilities in the scientific life of the country, and it is well that this important fact should not be overlooked, particularly by the societies themselves. These, it is to be feared, do not always appreciate their obligations to organise and carry through schemes of scientific work which obviously come within their province. Intensive investigations, both systematic and eco logical, of the fauna and flora of the country are problems pre-eminently suited to the activities of local societies. In fact, it will be only by the active co-operation and organisation of such societies that it will ultimately be possible to complete our knowledge of these matters.

Elias Ashmole, F.R.S., Founder of the First Public Museum of Natural History

MAY 23 next will be the three hundredth anniversary of the birth of Ashmole, antiquary, herald,. and man of science. He included among his interests not only the entire world of Nature, but, like some physicists of the present day, he delighted to explore the regions of the preternatural. He has often been blamed, and we think unjustly, for devoting so much time to astrology and alchemy, which were the “scientific” pursuits in fashion at that period; but we should dwell upon what has lasted of his work rather than upon what was trivial and ephemeral. So far as science is concerned, the outcome of his lifework will always be memorable, for he became the founder of the first public museum of natural history in Great Britain; next, he must be regarded as the founder of the first university chemical laboratory; and, thirdly, he founded the first chair of chemistry in Oxford.

Villainage in England

Russian historian and jurist Sir Paul Vinogradoff (1854–1925) maintained throughout his life a serious scholarly interest in the history of Great Britain, his adopted country. Elected to a professorship at Oxford in 1903, to the British Academy in 1905, and knighted for services to the realm in increasing Anglo-Russian understanding during the war (1917), Vinogradoff demonstrates in this book of 1892 both his interest in feudal England and his historiographic approach, which relied on detailed research using primary sources to examine individuals, communities, and social structures. Divided into two essays - 'The Peasantry of the Feudal Age' and 'The Manor and the Village Community' - the work used England's extensive feudal records to draw a general character of the period. Villainage will interest students of English or European mediaeval history and scholars of mediaeval legal history and of developments in nineteenth-century historiography.
