Peanut oil meal, with proper supplementation, has been used successfully as a protein supplement for chicks (Marvel et al., 1945; Altschul et al., 1948; Baylock and Richardson, 1950; and Driggers and Tarver, 1958). Recently Blount (1961) reported that the cause of large losses of turkeys in England (called turkey “x” disease) was due to a toxic factor(s) in Brazilian ground nut meal or peanut oil meal. Siller and Ostler (1961) have described a diagnosis for the disease based on the presence of histological liver lesions. Sargent et al. (1961a) have also described a method of diagnosis and with the use of this method reported the presence of a toxic factor(s) in peanut oil meals from Nigeria, French West Africa, Gambia and India (Sargent et al., 1961b).
