The government of the Association has been and is vested in its Board of Directors, now composed of the President, 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, 2 directors-at-large, and the 2 immediate living Past Presidents. The Association has kept its professional independence and its Directors have resisted offers of subsidizing of its operations from commercial interests. The Association became an Associate Member of the Highway Research Board in 1927, and of the American Standards Association in 1941. Articles of incorporation were signed and a charter was granted by the State of Michigan in 1959. Since 1928 the Association has published an Annual Proceedings containing papers and reports published at its meetings. An index provided in some volumes of the proceedings have proven useful to researchers. In 1971 action was taken to change the title of the publication to Asphalt Technology so that it would more satisfactorily indicate its content. The annual meetings of the Association have provided the opportunity for members to discuss technical problems with other attending members.
