A new monopartite begomovirus infecting Melochia tomentosa in Burkina Faso.

This is the first description of the complete genome sequence of a newly characterized monopartite begomovirus isolated from an asymptomatic uncultivated plant, Melochia tomentosa, collected in Burkina Faso. The sequence was obtained through rolling-circle amplification, cloning, and Sanger sequencing. The provisional species name "Begomovirus melochiae" and common virus name "melochia associated virus" (MeAV) are proposed. The MeAV genome was found to share the most nucleotide sequence similarity with three African monopartite begomoviruses: tomato curly stunt virus (74%), pepper yellow vein Mali virus (73%), and tomato leaf curl Cameroon virus (73%). Phylogenetic analysis confirmed its relationship to Old World monopartite begomoviruses. The discovery of MeAV in an uncultivated and asymptomatic plant provides a further example of the high diversity of begomoviruses in sub-Saharan African ecosystems.

Detection and identification of a cryptic red crossbill call type in northeastern North America

Red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra) are the archetypal example of a taxon with high infraspecific diversity in traits including bill size and especially vocal characteristics. Currently, at least 11 different call types in North America have been recognized. We hypothesize that a variant call within type 10 has been overlooked and is a distinct type. Principal component analysis showed that the inverted “V” of these calls is consistently and demonstrably different from similar calls of birds previously categorized as Type 10 variants. We argue these calls should be treated separately as a distinct type, Type 12. Due to increasingly available recordings of crossbills gathered and archived into public databases by birders, our analyses reveal that this call type is predominantly distributed across northeastern North America. Although crossbill types do not always map to formerly described subspecies, we also argue that Type 12 likely matches the historically described L. c. neogaea, the “old Northeastern subspecies”.

Multivariate Environmental Factors and Seasonal Spatial Dynamics Affecting the Phytoplankton Community in Yazhou Bay, South China Sea

This study investigated phytoplankton and water environmental factors in Yazhou Bay, South China Sea, during the winter, spring, and summer of 2023. It examined phytoplankton community structure, subgroup heterogeneity, and key environmental drivers. Phytoplankton abundance ranged from 0.08 to 14.30 × 10⁴ cells·L−1, with high concentrations in estuary and nearshore zones. In summer, currents carry phytoplankton offshore, with stratification leading to high sedimentation in southern offshore waters. RDA results indicated that in winter and spring, inorganic nitrogen mainly influences phytoplankton distribution, while silicate is the primary factor in summer. Although seasonal differences in total phytoplankton abundance are minimal, significant horizontal and vertical distribution variations exist. Diverse preferences of different phytoplankton species for temperature, salinity, nitrogen, and phosphorus result in high species diversity. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′) averages 3.96 ± 0.09, and the Pielou evenness index (J) averages 0.82 ± 0.01. Dominant species include Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Skeletonema costatum, and Rhizosolenia sinica. Influenced by external oceanic water masses, estuary input, and islands, phytoplankton subgroups show regional and seasonal variations. Despite recorded harmful algal blooms (HABs) in adjacent waters, Yazhou Bay’s high biodiversity and low cell density suggest a low HAB risk, though future risks due to climate change and human activities remain.

Benefits of Crotalaria juncea L. as Green Manure in Fertility and Soil Microorganisms on the Peruvian Coast

The soils of the Barranca valley are among the best soils in Peru, but with so many years of application of agrochemicals and other agricultural practices, they are losing their productive capacity. Consequently, it was suggested to assess the impact of Crotalaria juncea L. as a green manure on soil fertility and the populations of bacteria and fungi present in the soil. Crotalaria was cultivated for 75 days and incorporated as green manure. After 90 days, the presence of bacteria and fungi was evaluated. Metabarcoding was employed, and the 16S rRNA and ITS2 amplicons were sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq platform. The sequences were processed using various bioinformatics tools. The results indicate that soils have a high diversity of bacteria and fungi. Likewise, in plots where the presence and action of natural biocontrol is suppressed (C0 and P0), pathogenic fungi increase their population in the fallow period (C1), while in P1, the addition of Crotalaria as a green manure promotes an increase in the population of bacteria and fungi, and at the same time it suppresses pathogenic fungi. The genera (bacterial and/or fungal) that increase due to the effect of Crotalaria are beneficial because they are involved as degraders of organic matter, promotion of plant growth and biological control of pathogens. Crotalaria is an alternative to improve soil fertility, increase the beneficial bacterial population, and reduce pathogenic fungi.

Revision of the punctatus species-group of Dissomphalus Ashmead (Hymenoptera, Bethylidae)

The Neotropical region is known for its high species diversity. Dissomphalus Ashmead exemplifies this phenomenon, being the most speciose genus within Bethylidae, with 34 species-groups and 287 species. Among these groups, punctatus is one of the smallest, comprising only seven species. The objective of this contribution is to conduct a taxonomic study of punctatus species-group in the Neotropical region. Our results are surprising by discovering forty-six species, thirty-nine of which are new to science: D. alexandrinae sp. nov., D. alzirae sp. nov., D. ameliae sp. nov., D. annae sp. nov., D. antonietae sp. nov., D. ashauerae sp. nov., D. beatrizae sp. nov., D. boriae sp. nov., D. carmenae sp. nov., D. carolinae sp. nov., D. dandarae sp. nov., D. deaneae sp. nov., D. elisae sp. nov., D. elzae sp. nov., D. enedinae sp. nov., D. eulaliae sp. nov., D. evaristoae sp. nov., D. grazielae sp. nov., D. guidonae sp. nov., D. jaquelineae sp. nov., D. johannae sp. nov., D. leliae sp. nov., D. limae sp. nov., D. lispectorae sp. nov., D. luisae sp. nov., D. lumae sp. nov., D. lutzae sp. nov., D. margarethae sp. nov., D. martae sp. nov., D. maryae sp. nov., D. meirelesae sp. nov., D. mirandae sp. nov., D. nisiae sp. nov., D. penhae sp. nov., D. ritae sp. nov., D. silveirae sp. nov., D. soniae sp. nov., D. sueliae sp. nov., D. vivianeae sp. nov. which are described and illustrated. The status of Dissomphalus montanus (Kieffer, 1910), stat. resurr. is resurrected from the synonymy of D. punctatus (Kieffer, 1910) seven are previously described: D. acutipupu Colombo & Azevedo, D. bahiensis Redighieri & Azevedo, D. cuca Colombo & Azevedo, D. montanus (Kieffer), D. napo Evans, D. punctatus (Kieffer) and D. tupinikim Colombo & Azevedo. A key to males of all species in this group is provided. Throughout this paper, we demonstrate the diversity found in the genitalia structures of this group and emphasize their importance in the taxonomy of Dissomphalus.

Nexus of Soil Microbiomes, Genes, Classes of Carbon Substrates, and Biotransformation of Fluorotelomer-Based Precursors.

The unpredictable biodegradation of fluorotelomer (FT)-based per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) causes complicated risk management of PFAS-impacted sites. Here, we have successfully used redundancy analysis to link FT-based precursor biodegradation to key microbes and genes of soil microbiomes shaped by different classes of carbon sources: alcohols (C2-C4), alkanes (C6 and C8), an aromatic compound (phenol), or a hydrocarbon surfactant (cocamidopropyl betaine [CPB]). All the enrichments defluorinated fluorotelomer alcohols (n:2 FtOH; n = 4, 6, 8) effectively and grew on 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FtS) as a sulfur source. The butanol-enriched culture showed the highest defluorination extent for FtOHs and 6:2 FtS due to the high microbial diversity and the abundance of desulfonating and defluorinating genes. The CPB-enriched culture accumulated more 5:3 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid, suggesting unique roles of Variovorax and Pseudomonas. Enhanced 6:2 FtOH defluorination was observed due to a synergism between two enrichments with different carbon source classes except for those with phenol- and CPB-enriched cultures. While the 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamidoalkyl betaine was not degraded, trace levels of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamidoalkyl amines were detected. The identified species and genes involved in desulfonation, defluorination, and carbon source metabolism are promising biomarkers for assessing precursor degradation at the sites.

Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype distribution in Bangladeshi under-fives with community-acquired pneumonia pre-10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccination

BackgroundStreptococcus pneumoniae is the most frequent causative pathogen of bacterial pneumonia in children worldwide. Bangladesh introduced the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) in their national immunization program for infants in 2015. We assessed its potential coverage in under-fives with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the years before PCV10 was introduced.MethodsA total of 1502 childhood pneumonia cases (< 5 year olds living in the urban section Kamalapur, Dhaka) were enrolled between 2011 and 2013. Acute phase and late (convalescent) serum samples were collected from 1380 cases. Serotype-specific pneumococcal antibody concentrations were measured using a 25-plex immunoassay panel. Pneumococcal CAP was diagnosed based on a serotype-specific pneumococcal antibody response.ResultsS. pneumoniae was serologically identified as causative pathogen in 406/1380 (29%) cases. The five most prevalent serotypes were (in descending order) 11A, 22F, 3, 2 and 19F. Based on the percentage of pneumonia cases associated with PCV10 vaccine types, the potential PCV10 coverage was 29% (116/406).ConclusionsIn almost a third of the studied cases S. pneumoniae was identified as a causative pathogen. Because of the characteristics of the immunoassay, this might well be a gross underestimation. Nevertheless, the potential PCV10-coverage was low. Given the high serotype diversity, the region might benefit greatly from a higher-coverage PCV or recombinant protein vaccine.

Genetical and Morphological Identification of Prosthogonimus pellucidus (Digenea, Prosthogonimidae) in Grus japonensis

Species of the family Prosthogonimidae are considered the most pathogenic trematodes of poultry and wild birds worldwide, causing heavy economic losses in many countries. Prosthogonimosis was a common parasitic disease of Grus japonensis (Müller, 1776) which caused inflammation of the cloaca and bursa of Fabricius and even death. Morphological identifications of Prosthogonimus species are easily confusing; therefore, molecular characterization is used for discrimination. The present study was conducted to identify Prosthogonimus species at Zhalong National Nature Reserve, northeast of China. Considering the morphological variability and wide host range of individual Prosthogonimus species, a combination of both morphological and molecular analyses is indispensable for the valid identification of this parasite and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was amplified for the sequence analysis and phylogenetic analysis. The results of molecular analysis together with phylogenetic reconstruction indicated that the Prosthogonimus pellucidus (von Linstow, 1873) in this study form a single cluster with P. pellucidus, revealing potentially high diversity within the genus Prosthogonimus. Classification of Prosthogonimus species seems to be unrelated to the host and may be related to geographical location. These data provide a significant resource of molecular markers for studying the taxonomy, population genetics, and systematics of Prosthogonimidae.

Genome-guided isolation of the hyperthermophilic aerobe Fervidibacter sacchari reveals conserved polysaccharide metabolism in the Armatimonadota

Few aerobic hyperthermophilic microorganisms degrade polysaccharides. Here, we describe the genome-enabled enrichment and optical tweezer-based isolation of an aerobic polysaccharide-degrading hyperthermophile, Fervidibacter sacchari, previously ascribed to candidate phylum Fervidibacteria. F. sacchari uses polysaccharides and monosaccharides for growth at 65–87.5 °C and expresses 191 carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) according to RNA-Seq and proteomics, including 31 with unusual glycoside hydrolase domains (GH109, GH177, GH179). Fluorescence in-situ hybridization and nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry confirmed rapid assimilation of 13C-starch in spring sediments. Purified GHs were optimally active at 80–100 °C on ten different polysaccharides. Finally, we propose reassigning Fervidibacteria as a class within phylum Armatimonadota, along with 18 other species, and show that a high number and diversity of CAZymes is a hallmark of the phylum, in both aerobic and anaerobic lineages. Our study establishes Fervidibacteria as hyperthermophilic polysaccharide degraders in terrestrial geothermal springs and suggests a broad role for Armatimonadota in polysaccharide catabolism.

Adaptation in the Anthropocene: How behavioural choice and colour change enables chameleon prawns to camouflage on non-native seaweeds.

Animals combine colour change and behavioural choices to enhance concealment and adapt to changes in habitat in time and space. However, non-native and invasive habitat-forming plants and seaweeds can change the landscape, challenging animals to remain camouflaged, especially when the colour of the new habitat differs from the native backgrounds.The chameleon prawn (Hippolyte varians) exhibits remarkable colour variation and effective camouflage against different native seaweeds in shallow tidepools. Individuals optimize crypsis by choosing colour-matching seaweeds and changing colour over time. In some locations, the prawn's native habitats are now replaced by non-native seaweeds of different coloration and structure, making it important to understand whether substrate choice and colour change facilitates the occupation of these seaweeds and enables prawns to camouflage against new backgrounds.Using image analysis and visual modelling of a fish predator, we assessed the colour variation and camouflage of chameleon prawns occupying the non-native seaweeds brown wireweed (Sargassum muticum) and pink harpoon weed (Asparagopsis armata) in southwest UK. We performed laboratory trials to examine whether prawns maintain their preference for colour-matching native substrates when given a choice between them and non-native seaweeds, and if they can change their coloration to improve camouflage against non-native substrates.Prawns exhibit phenotypic diversity and camouflage that varied with the non-native seaweed species, with low colour variation and effective camouflage on pink harpoon weed, but high colour diversity and reduced concealment against brown wireweed. Prawns choose non-native seaweeds when the alternative native substrate provides mismatching coloration, but they did not exhibit any preference between colour-matching native and non-native seaweeds. Once in non-native habitats, prawns change their appearance over a few days to match the background, sometimes faster than when changing on native seaweeds of contrasting coloration.Although human activities considerably modify the coloration of marine landscapes by increasing the establishment of non-native seaweeds, the impacts of those changes appear less severe for colour-changing species, such as chameleon prawns, and will depend on the similarity between the colour of the new substrates and the original native backgrounds, and how animals use behaviour and physiology to match new habitats.

Functional diversity and resilience of bivalves after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction

The Permian-Triassic mass extinction was the largest extinction event in the Phanerozoic eon, with profound taxonomic and ecological effects on the ecosystem function. Functional diversity, a facet of biodiversity, could reflect the ecosystem function and stability. Although previous studies have shown that the functional richness of global marine organisms was decoupled from their taxonomic diversity during the mass extinctions, the evolution of functional diversity during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction and its aftermath is still under debate. The ecologically diverse clade bivalves may be more representative for understanding the evolution of functional diversity. To investigate the evolutionary dynamics of the functional diversity of bivalves, a global bivalve dataset of 8929 occurrences from the latest Permian to the Late Triassic was constructed. Functional richness, functional evenness, and functional redundancy were calculated to reflect the functional diversity in this study. Our results showed that the functional richness of bivalves was slightly affected by the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, decoupled from the significant decrease in taxonomic diversity. Meanwhile, a decrease in functional redundancy and an increase in functional evenness were observed after the mass extinction. In addition, bivalves showed high resilience to the mass extinction by maintaining the ecospace and reducing the functional redundancy. The high taxonomic diversity, high functional richness, high functional redundancy and relatively higher proportion of infaunal bivalves during the Late Triassic indicate that the Mesozoic marine revolution was already underway.

Insights into the occurrence of phylosymbiosis and co-phylogeny in the holobionts of octocorals from the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea

BackgroundCorals are the foundational species of coral reefs and coralligenous ecosystems. Their success has been linked to symbioses with microorganisms, and a coral host and its symbionts are therefore considered a single entity, called the holobiont. This suggests that there may be evolutionary links between corals and their microbiomes. While there is evidence of phylosymbiosis in scleractinian hexacorals, little is known about the holobionts of Alcyonacean octocorals.Results16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed differences in the diversity and composition of bacterial communities associated with octocorals collected from the mesophotic zones of the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The low diversity and consistent dominance of Endozoicomonadaceae and/or Spirochaetaceae in the bacterial communities of Mediterranean octocorals suggest that these corals may have a shared evolutionary history with their microbiota. Phylosymbiotic signals were indeed detected and cophylogeny in associations between several bacterial strains, particularly those belonging to Endozoicomonadaceae or Spirochaetaceae, and coral species were identified. Conversely, phylosymbiotic patterns were not evident in Red Sea octocorals, likely due to the high bacterial taxonomic diversity in their microbiota, but cophylogeny in associations between certain coral and bacterial species was observed. Noteworthy were the associations with Endozoicomonadaceae, suggesting a plausible evolutionary link that warrants further investigations to uncover potential underlying patterns.ConclusionsOverall, our findings emphasize the importance of Endozoicomonadaceae and Spirochaetaceae in coral symbiosis and the significance of exploring host-microbiome interactions in mesophotic ecosystems for a comprehensive understanding of coral-microbiome evolutionary history.

Dual-Wide Multi-Band (DWMB) four-port flexible MIMO antenna for on-body multiple wireless applications including high diversity performance.

The single-input-single-output technology experiences loss of data in the communication channel due to the receiving antenna undergoing fading of the signal impinged on it. Today's need is faster data transfer with multiple applications in the single antenna with multiple-identical radiating elements, leading to multiple-input-multiple-outputDWMB (MIMODWMB) technology. The MIMODWMB configuration with multi-band capability is the objective of the proposed work with applications ranging between microwave-millimeterWave bands. The four-port Dual-Wide Multi-Band (DWMB) MIMODWMB antenna radiating electro-magnetic-energy is proposed, which generates measured bandwidths of 7.27GHz-34.32GHz (Band 1) and 46.54GHz-71.52GHz (Band 2) including applications Up-link/Down-link Satellite System, X-Band, Ku-Band, ISM 24.0GHz (24.0GHz-24.25GHz), 24.0GHz UWB Band (21.65GHz-26.65GHz), n258, n257/n261 and n263 V-band. The proposed antenna technology is printed on Rogers's low permittivity substrate with a hexagon patch etched with dual merged-elliptical slot and three identical circular slots to achieve high impedance matching for Band 1. The partial-ground is etched by a rectangular slot for better impedance matching, and two-thin-etched rectangular slits generate 60.0GHz Band 2. The thin substrate, thickness 0.254mm, is utilized for flexible applications without compromising the operation of dual wide bandwidths. The flexible antenna is also subjected to analysis of Specific-Absorption-Rate (SAR) analysis at key frequencies within both the bands and found to be within the standard limit of 1.60W/Kg for 1g of the human tissue model and corresponds to 1.01W/Kg at 10.0GHz, 0.280W/Kg at 15.0GHz, 0.475W/Kg at 26.0GHz, 0.588W/Kg at 28.0GHz & 0.301W/Kg at 60.0GHz. The high diversity performance with Envelope Correlation Coefficient<0.50, Diversity Gain≈10.0dB, Total Active Reflection Coefficent<0dB, Channel Capacity Loss<0.40b/s/Hz and multi-band capability for mobile users make the proposed work suitable for flexible on-body applications in a wireless environment. The proposed work MIMODWMB antenna offers advantages such as reduced size (20mm×24mm: 0.61λ0×0.74λ0 at λ0 = 7.27GHz) and a wide range of impedance bandwidths, which are useful for several applications. Also, due to the flexible nature of the design, they can be used for future on-body wearable applications.

Genetic Diversity and Selection Signatures of Lvliang Black Goat Using Genome-Wide SNP Data

Lvliang black goat (LBG) is an excellent local breed resource in China that is known for its black fur, excellent meat quality, and strong adaptability. Studying the genetic mechanism and germplasm characteristics of LBG can provide theoretical and practical basis for the protection of the genetic resources of this breed and help implement conservation and breeding. In this study, the genetic diversity of the LBG population was evaluated using whole-genome SNP data. It was found that the LBG population had a high genetic diversity and a low degree of inbreeding. According to the clustering results of male goats and the relationship between individuals, the LBG population was divided into 13 families. Then, through population structure analysis, it was found that LBG had a close genetic relationship with the Nanjiang goat and Qinggoda goat populations, and they may have the same ancestors. The LBG population has retained some ancient genetic characteristics and is a special population that integrates local genetic characteristics and foreign gene flow. Through four selection signal analyses, we detected multiple candidate genes related to economic traits (CFL2, SCD, NLRP14, etc.) and adaptability (C4BPA, FUT8, PRNP, etc.) in the LBG population. In addition, in a comparative analysis with three commercial breeds (Saanen goat, Boer goat and Angora goat) we also found multiple genes related to physical characteristics (ERG, NRG3, EDN3, etc.). Finally, we performed functional enrichment analysis on these genes and explored their genetic mechanisms. This study provides important data support for the protection and breeding of LBG and provides a new perspective for enriching the genetic diversity of goat populations.

Distribution and diversity of classical deacylases in bacteria

Classical Zn2+-dependent deac(et)ylases play fundamental regulatory roles in life and are well characterized in eukaryotes regarding their structures, substrates and physiological roles. In bacteria, however, classical deacylases are less well understood. We construct a Generalized Profile (GP) and identify thousands of uncharacterized classical deacylases in bacteria, which are grouped into five clusters. Systematic structural and functional characterization of representative enzymes from each cluster reveal high functional diversity, including polyamine deacylases and protein deacylases with various acyl-chain type preferences. These data are supported by multiple crystal structures of enzymes from different clusters. Through this extensive analysis, we define the structural requirements of substrate selectivity, and discovered bacterial de-d-/l-lactylases and long-chain deacylases. Importantly, bacterial deacylases are inhibited by archetypal HDAC inhibitors, as supported by co-crystal structures with the inhibitors SAHA and TSA, and setting the ground for drug repurposing strategies to fight bacterial infections. Thus, we provide a systematic structure-function analysis of classical deacylases in bacteria and reveal the basis of substrate specificity, acyl-chain preference and inhibition.

The role of child nutrition counselling, gender dynamics, and intra-household feeding decision-making on child dietary diversity in semi-arid northern Ghana

Every child has the right to proper nutrition. As such, child nutrition counselling is recommended to improve child dietary diversity and reduce malnutrition. However, there is limited empirical evidence on how child nutrition counselling, gender dynamics, and intra-household feeding decisions play a role and translate to child dietary diversity in rural contexts. Informed by theoretical conceptions from Health Belief Model (HBM) and Gender and Development (GAD) framework, we analyzed cross-sectional data from 517 smallholder households in Ghana's semi-arid Upper West Region to investigate the relationship between child nutrition counselling, gender dynamics, intra-household feeding decision-making, and their impact on child dietary diversity. Results from ordered logistic regression show that households that received child nutrition counselling reported higher child dietary diversity. Joint intra-household feeding decisions were associated with higher child dietary diversity. Households with good self-rated childcare, engaged in home gardening, and higher wealth, as well as those in the Waala ethnic group, were more likely to have high child dietary diversity. A decrease in household head age was linked to increased high child dietary diversity. On the other hand, female-headed households, Brifo ethnic groups, and those in the Wa East and Wa West districts were less likely to experience high child dietary diversity. Implementing interventions and policies prioritizing nutrition education in the Upper West Region and similar sub-Saharan African contexts is recommended. Strategies like scaling up child nutrition counselling, food demonstrations, mother-to-mother support nutrition outreach, and mobile nutrition clinics can empower women and improve children's well-being.

Integrated Genetic and Statolith Shape Analysis Reveals the Population Structure of Loliolus (Nipponololigo) uyii (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae) in the Coastal Waters of China

Understanding population structure is a priority for evaluating population dynamics of commercially fished cephalopods under fishing pressure and environmental changes. This study employed a multidisciplinary approach to clarify the population structure of Loliolus (Nipponololigo) uyii, a common squid in inshore fisheries. Sampling was conducted multiple times to cover the distribution range across the East China Sea and South China Sea. High haplotype diversity was revealed by three gene markers (COI, 16S and ODH). Two geographical clades with significant genetic differentiation were divided through phylogenetic trees and haplotype networks. The boundary between the two clades is delineated by the Dongshan population in the southern East China Sea. Furthermore, the neutrality tests and mismatch analysis suggested that L. (N.) uyii populations may have undergone population expansion. Correspondingly, statolith differences in lateral dome and posterior indentation, along with high classification success, further supported the genetic division. The overall difference in statolith shape also efficiently identified seasonal groups in the Beibu Gulf lacking genetic differentiation. This result offers new insights into the influence of genetic and environmental factors on statolith shape. The integrated results provide a comprehensive understanding of the population structure of L. (N.) uyii, laying the foundation for resource development and the conservation of the species.

Major Histocompatibility Complex Class II Genes Allele Diversity in Landlocked Seals.

The allelic diversity of exon 2 (DQB gene) and exon 3 (DRB gene) of major histocompatibility complex class II was studied for the first time in two species of the landlocked pinnipeds, Baikal (N = 79) and Caspian (N = 32) seals, and these were in compared with the widespread Arctic species, the ringed seal (N = 13). The analysis of the second exon comprising the antigen-binding region revealed high allelic diversity in all three species but the pattern of the diversity was the most specific for the Baikal seal. This species differs from the other two by the smallest number of alleles in the population, yet they have the largest number of alleles per individual and by the maximum similarity of individual genotypes. Presumably, this specificity is a consequence of the spatial and temporal homogeneity of the Lake Baikal environment. Analysis of the third exon encoding the conserved β2-domain showed that the Baikal seal differs by the greatest number of amino acid sequences per individual, while the Caspian seal has the lowest number of variants. A single variant of the β2-domain, the same as in the ringed seal, predominates in the Caspian seal, whereas in the Baikal seal the two other variants predominate. At the same time, three species-specific amino acid sequences were observed among minor variants in the Caspian seal, while only one was found in the Baikal seal. This fact may suggest a longer period of independent evolution in the Caspian seal compared to the Baikal seal.

Benefit of weeds for crop-plant mycobiota in agroecosystems: Integrating ecological demonstration and management applicability

Agricultural intensification reduces not only biodiversity in agroecosystems but also key ecosystem functions such as soil fertility. By reintroducing biological diversity in fields, weeds may enhance soil biological fertility through their influence on crop microbiota. However, letting weeds grow in crop fields will depend on weed competitiveness, farmers’ perception and acceptance, and on crop management, which influences the occurrence and the abundance of weeds in the field. This study assessed the use of eight weed species to modify wheat plant root endospheric mycobiota, and the applicability of using these plants for mycobiota enrichment in the field. By combining controlled lab experiments and field studies, we demonstrated that weeds act either as a refuge for a high diversity of fungi or as a vector for transferring fungi to the crop, particularly symbionts. Weeds differed in their competitive effect on wheat growth and only three species significantly reduced wheat growth. Interviews with farmers’ revealed that weed species were better known and more appreciated in crop fields by organic farmers than by conventional farmers. Floristic surveys confirmed that both weed occurrence and cover were higher in organic fields than in conventional fields. A multicriteria analysis showed that Trifolium repens and V. persica had the highest potential for promoting wheat plant mycobiota. Among the weed species tested, these two are worth considering as auxiliaries to improve soil biological fertility in crop fields. Their use with the goal of selecting appropriate crop mycobiota should be relatively easier in organic farms where weeds are better accepted, whereas their use in conventional farms would require raising farmers’ awareness of the benefits of weeds for soil fertility.
