Ratio-dependent competitions between a Wolbachia-uninfected bisexual strain and Wolbachia-infected thelytokous strain of the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

BackgroundWolbachia-infected thelytokous Trichogramma wasps have been considered as potential effective biocontrol agents against lepidopteran pests in agriculture and forests. However, intra-specific competition may arise when Wolbachia-infected thelytokous Trichogramma coexist with their uninfected bisexual counterparts in fields or during mass-rearing procedures. This competition could potentially impact the efficacy of Trichogramma females in biological control programs.ResultsThis study examined the parasitic capacities of bisexual (TdB) and Wolbachia-infected thelytokous (TdT) strains of Trichogramma dendrolimi as influenced by host density (ranging from 5 to 70 host eggs) and wasp density (two, four, and six females per arena). The experiments involved inter-strain competition between TdB and TdT strains (Inter-Td) as well as intra-strain competition within the TdT (Intra-TdT) or TdB (Intra-TdB) strains. Results revealed that females in the Inter-Td group exhibited a higher attack rate compared to those in the Intra-TdT and Intra-TdB groups, irrespective of wasp density. Specifically, when six females were present, the Inter-Td group showed significantly shorter host handling times than the Intra-TdT group. Within intra-strain cohorts, TdT females displayed a lower attack rate than TdB females when four or six females were present, and longer host handling times when six females were present. Mutual interference between individuals was not affected by competition types. Females of the Inter-Td group exhibited a higher probability of superparasitism than those of the Intra-TdB group or Inter-Td group. When both strains coexisted, the proportion of TdT offspring with six females was higher than that with two females or four females. Male ratios of bisexual offspring in Inter-Td groups were higher than those in Intra-TdB groups. The male ratio of bisexual offspring in the Inter-Td group increased with wasp density.ConclusionsOur study highlights the negative impact of Wolbachia on parasitic capacity of Trichogramma females, increasing the likelihood of superparasitism. The coexistence of both strains enhances total parasitic efficacy, albeit resulting in a higher proportion of male offspring compared to scenarios with only uninfected females. The results will provide the reference for the usage of Wolbachia-infected thelytokous strain of T. dendrolimi in augmentative biological control programs.

Factors affecting male-to-female ratio at birth in frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles: a large retrospective cohort study.

ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) leads to a reduced male-to-female ratio at birth, whereas blastocyst transfer results in an increased male-to-female ratio. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the impact of these factors on the live birth rate for each gender. This study aimed to investigate the influence of patient characteristics and treatment parameters on the live birth rate for each gender, as well as the ultimate male-to-female ratio at birth in frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles. This retrospective cohort study involved a total of 28,376 FET cycles and 9,217 subsequent deliveries, spanning from January 2003 to December 2015. The study consisted of two parts. First, logistic regression models were constructed to determine the factors influencing the male-to-female ratio among babies born after FET. Second, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying this sex ratio imbalance by analyzing data from all transfer cycles. Generalized estimated equations were employed to assess the impact of risk factors on rates of male and female live births separately. ICSI resulted in a lower proportion of male offspring compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF) (50.1% vs. 53.7%, aOR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.80-0.96). Conversely, blastocyst transfer yielded a higher proportion of male offspring than cleavage-stage embryo transfer (58.7% vs. 51.6%, aOR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.17-1.48). Analysis of all cycles indicated that ICSI resulted in a reduced likelihood of male live birth in comparison to IVF (19.8% vs. 21.6%, aOR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83-0.97). However, the transfer of blastocysts rather than cleavage-stage embryos not only increased the chance of male live birth (26.9% vs. 20.2%, aOR: 1.70, 95% CI:1.56-1.85) but also facilitated female live birth (20.3% vs. 19.3%, aOR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.15-1.39). ICSI was associated with a reduction in the male-to-female sex ratio and a lower rate of male live births, while blastocyst transfer was associated with an increased male-to-female sex ratio at birth and a higher rate of male live births.

Maternal investment in a bee species with facultative nest guarding and males heavier than females

1. Maternal investment can be influenced by several factors, especially maternal quality and possibilities for future reproduction. Mass provisioning Hymenoptera are an excellent group for measuring maternal investment because mothers distribute food sources to each brood cell for each offspring separately. Generally in aculeate Hymenoptera, larger females produce larger offspring and invest more in female offspring than in male offspring.2. This study investigated patterns of maternal investment in Ceratina chalcites, which has an uncommon type of sexual size dimorphism in Hymenoptera: on average, males are heavier than females. It was found that larger females produce a significantly higher proportion of male offspring, as males are the costlier sex in this species.3. Facultative nest guarding by females was observed. Females can guard offspring until adulthood, as is typical for bees of genus Ceratina (34.43% of nests); however, in the majority of cases (65.56% of nests), females plug and abandon the nest. Significant differences were found in the amount of investment between guarded and unguarded nests. Guarded nests had a greater number of provisioned brood cells and a higher proportion of male offspring. It is suggested that mothers have two facultative strategies – either she makes a large investment in the offspring of one nest or she abandons the first nest and carries out a second nesting elsewhere.

Quantitative impact of mating duration on reproduction and offspring sex ratio of Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

Phytoseiulus persimilis is an important biological control agent, commercially produced worldwide. To increase understandings of its reproduction, herein we provided quantitative descriptions of the inflation and deflation of its spermathecae as a function of time and copulation duration, and the quantitative impact of copulation termination on volume of spermatheca vesicle, fecundity, and offspring sex ratio. After mating started, at least one spermatheca started to inflate immediately, but no egg was produced until spermatheca volume reached 1021 µm3. Beyond this size, cumulative fecundity was linearly correlated with vesicle volume. Producing one egg required 36 µm3 volume increase of the vesicle. Each spermatheca vesicle reached its peak size at the end of mating duration (ca. 2.38 h after mating started), and started to shrink immediately. In 24 h, ca. 71% individuals had one completely shriveled spermatheca, while in 72 h all individuals had at least one shriveled spermatheca. The estimated maximum cumulative fecundity per female after a single mating is (69.4±7.7) eggs. No significant impact of mating termination on offspring sex ratio was observed after mating duration reached 60 min, while higher proportion of male offspring was observed when mating duration is 15 or 30 min. This study is the first step to investigate possible male impact on offspring sex ratio in P. persimilis. Our results suggested the number of sperms received during mating be a restriction factor of P. persimilis offspring sex ratio regulation.

Costs of Franklin’s ground squirrel (Poliocitellusfranklinii) ectoparasitism reveal adaptive sex allocation

Parasite infestation may impose direct costs of blood, nutrient, and energy depletion, along with indirect costs of increased immune response upon hosts. We investigated how ectoparasitism influences body mass and reproduction in a free-living population of Franklin’s ground squirrels (Poliocitellus franklinii (Sabine, 1822)) located near Delta Marsh, Manitoba, Canada. We experimentally reduced ectoparasite burden by treating seven reproductive females with an insecticide following breeding and contrasted body mass and reproductive performance of those individuals to seven sham-treated control females. Insecticide-treated dams did not differ from sham-treated dams in body mass, litter size, or juvenile mass, and thus, dam growth and reproduction were not compromised by ectoparasite defense at the infestation levels experienced in this study. However, litter sex ratio differed significantly between insecticide-treated and control females, with a higher proportion of male offspring produced among females with reduced ectoparasite load. Our findings are thus consistent with the Trivers–Willard model for adaptive sex allocation, yet they provide novel comparative insight into how sociality may modulate the expression of adaptive sex allocation among small mammals given the differential payoff associated with the production of high-quality female versus male offspring in more social versus less social species.

Variation in rates of spontaneous male production within the nematode species Pristionchus pacificus supports an adaptive role for males and outcrossing

BackgroundThe nematode species Pristionchus pacificus has an androdioecious mating system in which populations consist of self-fertilizing hermaphrodites and relatively few males. The prevalence of males in such a system is likely to depend on the relative pros and cons of outcrossing. While outcrossing generates novel allelic combinations and can therefore increase adaptive potential, it may also disrupt the potentially beneficial consequences of repeated generations of selfing. These include purging of deleterious alleles, inheritance of co-adapted allele complexes, improved hermaphrodite fitness and increased population growth. Here we use experimental and population genetic approaches to test hypotheses relating to male production and outcrossing in laboratory and natural populations of P. pacificus sampled from the volcanic island of La Réunion.ResultsWe find a significant interaction between sampling locality and temperature treatment influencing rates of spontaneous male production in the laboratory. While strains isolated at higher altitude, cooler localities produce a higher proportion of male offspring at 25 °C relative to 20 or 15 °C, the reverse pattern is seen in strains isolated from warmer, low altitude localities. Linkage disequilibrium extends across long physical distances, but fails to approach levels reported for the partially selfing nematode species Caenorhabditis elegans. Finally, we find evidence for admixture between divergent genetic lineages.ConclusionsElevated rates of laboratory male generation appear to occur under environmental conditions which differ from those experienced by populations in nature. Such elevated male generation may result in higher outcrossing rates, hence driving increased effective recombination and the creation of potentially adaptive novel allelic combinations. Patterns of linkage disequilibrium decay support selfing as the predominant reproductive strategy in P. pacificus. Finally, despite the potential for outcrossing depression, our results suggest admixture has occurred between distinct genetic lineages since their independent colonization of the island, suggesting outcrossing depression may not be uniform in this species.

Reproductive trends of captive polar bears in North American zoos: a historical analysis

Despite the fact that nearly all captive polar bears ( Ursus maritimus ) are recommended for breeding, very few cubs are born each year and the rate of neonatal mortality is high. Animal caretakers tend to rely on anecdotal reports regarding reproductive events, such as timing of parturition, litter size and cub survival. To objectively document trends in polar bear reproduction during their tenure in North American zoos, this analysis utilised 99 years of records in the Polar Bear Studbook to characterise patterns in reproduction and cub survival. Factors evaluated included latitude, year of birth, parental demographics (age, origin (captive-born or wild-caught) and litter size), sex, survival, litter size and litter order. Between 1912 and 2010, 697 individuals (456 litters) were born at latitudes ranging from 25.90 to 52.94 oN. The average number of litters produced per year was 4.60 ± 0.51 with a range of zero to 18. The polar bear birth season lasted 106 days with mean and median birth dates of 29 November. Litter size was unaffected by any of the variables analysed: 52.7% of litters were singletons, 44.9% were twins and 2.4% were triplets. Older sires produced a higher proportion of male offspring than younger sires (P < 0.05). More than half of all individuals died prior to 30 days of age and 30.4% reached adulthood (four years). Cubs of captive-born parents lived longer than those of wild-caught parents (P < 0.05). Individuals born in litters of multiples were more likely to die as neonates than those born as singletons (P < 0.01) and individuals born to multiparous dams lived longer than those born to primiparous dams (P < 0.02). This study represents the largest analysis of captive polar bear reproduction conducted to date and may serve as a reference for individuals involved in the management and care of captive polar bears.

This study, which is based on two cross sectional surveys’ data, aims to establish any effect of parental obesity sex distribution of offspring and to replicate the results that led to the hypothesis that obesity may be associated with sex-linked recessive lethal gene. A representative sample of 4,064 couples living in Renfrew/Paisley, Scotland was surveyed 1972–1976. A total of 2,338 offspring from 1,477 of the couples screened in 1972–1976, living in Paisley, were surveyed in 1996. In this study, males represented 47.7% among the total offspring of the couples screened in 1972–1976. In the first survey there was a higher male proportion of offspring (53%, p < 0.05) from parents who were both obese, yet this was not significant after adjustment for age of parents. Also, there were no other significant differences in sex distribution of offspring according to body mass index, age, or social class of parents. The conditions of the original 1949 study of Angel (1949) (which proposed a sex-linked lethal recessive gene) were simulated by selecting couples with at least one obese daughter. In this subset, (n = 409), obesity in fathers and mothers was associated with 26% of offspring being male compared with 19% of offspring from a non-obese father and obese mother. Finally we conclude that families with an obese father have a higher proportion of male offspring. These results do not support the long-established hypotheses of a sex-linked recessive lethal gene in the etiology of obesity.

Male-biased sex-ratio distortion caused by Octosporea bayeri, a vertically and horizontally-transmitted parasite of Daphnia magna

Female-biased sex-ratio distortion is often observed in hosts infected with vertically-transmitted microsporidian parasites. This bias is assumed to benefit the spread of the parasite, because male offspring usually do not transmit the parasite further. The present study reports on sex-ratio distortion in a host–parasite system with both horizontal and vertical parasite transmission: the microsporidium Octosporea bayeri and its host, the planktonic cladoceran Daphnia magna. In laboratory and field experiments, we found an overall higher proportion of male offspring in infected than in uninfected hosts. In young males, there was no parasite effect on sperm production, but, later in life, infected males produced significantly less sperm than uninfected controls. This shows that infected males are fertile. As males are unlikely to transmit the parasite vertically, an increase in male production could be advantageous to the host during phases of sexual reproduction, because infected mothers may obtain uninfected grandchildren through their sons. Life-table experiments showed that, overall, sons harboured more parasite spores than their sisters, although they reached a smaller body size and died earlier. Male production may thus be beneficial for the parasite when horizontal transmission has a large pay-off as males may contribute more effectively to parasite spread than females.

Blastocyst embryo transfer is associated with a sex-ratio imbalance in favor of male offspring

To evaluate the sex ratio of offspring born after blastocyst transfers. Retrospective data analysis. A large assisted reproductive technology center. We included 1,284 offspring from 937 deliveries during the period August 2003-August 2005. Tabulation and statistical analysis of all births resulting from fresh IVF cycles. The sex of resulting offspring was compared in both day 3 and blastocyst transfers for all births and for singleton deliveries. In addition, the sex of children conceived with the use of autologous oocytes and donor oocytes was evaluated. Sex ratio of offspring born following embryo transfers (ETs) after day 3 of culture and sequential blastocycst culture. The overall sex ratio was significantly shifted toward males when blastocyst transfers were performed. Blastocyst transfers with only the use of autologous oocytes resulted again in a significantly higher proportion of male offspring. An even greater proportional difference was encountered in singleton offspring from donor oocytes. However, significance was not reached because of the limited number of offspring in the subgroup. This is the first individual-center report of a significant sex-ratio imbalance after the sequential media culture of blastocysts. The large imbalance in singleton births associated with the use of donor oocytes, although not significant, is cautionary in regard to the use of elective single ETs. Observation and publication of phenomena such as the effects of extended culture on the sex ratio of live-borns will allow us a better understanding of early differences in sexual dimorphism of the embryo, and will allow us to counsel our patients more appropriately.

P-275: Male blastocysts exhibit improved trophodectoderm, possibly accounting for the sex-imbalance seen with blastocyst embryo births

A body of evidence is accumulating that demonstrates embryo transfer at the blastocyst stage results in a higher proportion of male offspring. To date, studies have suggested that male embryos are more likely to be chosen by embryologists for transfer, but no specific identifiable morphometric factors have been isolated. We undertook this study to evaluate whether specific factors that are incorporated in blastocyst grading vary in relationship to the sex chromosomes.

The impact of behavioral and physiological maternal effects on offspring sex ratio in the common snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina

Theory suggests that maternal effects are especially important in organisms with environmentally-sensitive sex-determining mechanisms. However, there is no substantive body of empirical evidence to confirm this conjecture. We integrated field and laboratory studies to jointly evaluate the significance of behavioral (nest-site choice) and physiological (yolk hormone allocation) maternal effects on offspring sex ratio in the common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina), a species with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). Of the 16 microhabitat variables measured, only three (south, east, and total overstory vegetation cover) were significantly correlated with nest temperature: cooler nests were located under more vegetation cover. In turn, these microhabitat predictors of nest temperature, and nest temperature itself, may influence nest sex ratio: shadier, cooler nests were more likely to produce a higher proportion of male offspring than less shady, warmer nests. Analysis of eggs from these same nests incubated in a common garden design in the laboratory revealed that clutch sex ratio was unaffected by levels of yolk estradiol, yolk testosterone, or their interaction. Examination of both behavioral and physiological maternal effects revealed no concordant impact on offspring sex ratio. However, eggs from nests that produced male-biased sex ratios in the field yielded higher proportions of males under constant-temperature conditions in the laboratory. Our study confirms the importance of behavioral maternal effects in nature on offspring sex ratios in species with TSD, while also revealing the potential presence of a predisposition for sex-ratio production underlying TSD in this system.

Nest size and hatchling sex ratio in chinstrap penguins

Variation in the sex ratio at hatching in the chinstrap penguin Pygoscelis antarctica was investigated, using molecular sexing to test predictions of sex allocation theory. The sex ratio was slightly male-biased (0.54) but did not differ significantly from parity. The proportion of males increased with nest size, an estimator of parental quality in chinstrap penguins. High-quality parents were able to produce and rear a higher proportion of male offspring, the more costly sex in this slightly sexually dimorphic species. Our results may be in agreement with Trivers and Willard’s (1973) argument on biases in the offspring sex ratio being contingent on parental condition or quality.

Sex Ratio Adjustment in a Seasonally Breeding Primate Species: Evidence from the Barbary Macaque Population at Affenberg Salem

AbstractPresented are data on secondary sex ratio in a large population of semifree‐ranging Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) at Affenberg Salem. Examined were 569 births in five social groups with regard to demographic parameters, maternal age and rank. Significant differences were found between the secondary sex ratios of high ranking and low ranking females. A higher proportion of male offspring was born in the high ranking class, while both groups did not differ in fecundity rates. A detailed analysis of the reproductive cycles of 73 females showed a significant shorter interval between the end of conceptional estrus and birth in male infants and also a significantly earlier onset of deturgescence of anogenital swelling when males were conceived. These results strongly suggest that the differences in the secondary sex ratio are not due to differential abortions but rather to pre‐conceptional control of sex via timing of mating in relation to ovulation.
