Stigma and Sexual Dissatisfaction in Middle-Aged and Older Sexual Minorities.

High sexual quality and activity predict psychological well-being in heterosexual middle-aged and older adults; however, these associations have not been documented in sexual minorities, who have faced lifelong stigma concerning their sexuality. This paper presents data from two secondary studies that explored the benefits of being sexually active and satisfied and the role of internalized homonegativity in a sample of middle-aged and older sexual minorities. Study 1 was a cross-sectional survey collected on 91 sexually active sexual minorities (ages 40-80) in same-sex relationships. Study 2 was a cross-sectional survey collected on 235 single and partnered sexual minorities (ages 40-90), which included sexually active (N = 101) and inactive (N = 134) participants. In Study 1, sexual satisfaction was associated with higher psychological well-being and dissatisfaction was more prominently associated with lower psychological well-being. In Study 2, we found that the sexually active participants had higher levels of psychological well-being, in addition to corroborating the Study 1 findings. Additionally, we also determined that sexual dissatisfaction was a mediator between internalized homonegativity and psychological well-being. These findings accentuate the benefits of retaining high sexual quality and activity for middle-aged and older sexual minorities. Although there are apparent advantages of being sexually satisfied, the relationship to psychological well-being is stronger and more of a concern for those who are dissatisfied, which is rooted in internalized homonegativity. These results can guide practitioners working with middle-aged and older sexual minorities to help them achieve successful aging trajectories by reducing their internalized homonegativity and promoting higher sexual quality.

Roles of self-efficacy and self-control in the association between relative deprivation and psychological well-being among undergraduate students during COVID-19 pandemic

Prior research show that relative deprivation can decrease individuals’ psychological well-being. However, the underlying mechanism between relative deprivation and psychological well-being remains unclear. To explore the mediating effects of self-efficacy and self-control on the relationship between relative deprivation and psychological well-being. 426 undergraduate students submitted the online survey that assessed their psychological well-being, relative deprivation, self-efficacy and self-control. Students experienced high levels of psychological well-being, moderate to high levels of relative deprivation and moderate levels of self-efficacy and self-control. Parallel mediators of self-efficacy and self-control on the relationship between relative deprivation and psychological well-being were significant (each p < 0.01). This study explores the underlying mechanism between relative deprivation and psychological well-being by identifying the parallel mediators of self-efficacy and self-control. Effective interventions should be taken to alleviate students’ relative deprivation and promote their self-efficacy, self-control and psychological well-being during future pandemics.

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-US"&gt;This article analyzes the relationship between psychological well-being and resilience in the context of attitudes toward adopted children among foster mothers. The hypothesis suggests that a mother&amp;rsquo;s active participation in upbringing promotes democratic relationships with the child and creative approaches to problem-solving, and that her psychological well-being depends on an optimistic attitude and willingness to cooperate with the child. The respondents were 48 foster mothers, raising between 1 and 7 adopted children. The average age of the substitute mothers was 40 &amp;plusmn; 6 years. To test the hypothesis, the following methods were used: the &amp;ldquo;Resilience Test&amp;rdquo; by S.&amp;nbsp;Maddi, the &amp;ldquo;Psychological Well-Being Scale&amp;rdquo; by K. Ryff, the &amp;ldquo;Parental Attitude Diagnostics&amp;rdquo; questionnaire by A.Ya. Varga and V.V. Stolin, and the &amp;ldquo;Personal change-readiness survey&amp;rdquo; in the adaptation by N.A. Bazhanova, G.L. Bardier. The study confirmed the hypothesis and identified a connection between psychological well-being and resilience in substitute mothers. It was also established that the well-being and ability of a substitute mother to withstand social pressure depend on her ability to cope with stress, her readiness for self-realization, and her ability to achieve goals. A high level of psychological well-being contributes to the enjoyment of raising an adopted child.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Influence Of Grief Counselling On Psychological Wellbeing Among Widows At Africa Inland Church, Nairobi Area Church Council, Kenya

The death of a spouse can be extremely unbearable and even psychologically incapacitating. Widows face challenges that deeply affect their psychological wellbeing. The church has remained the best place for most widows in seeking consolation. This study investigated the influence of grief counselling on psychological wellbeing among widows at the Africa Inland Church, Nairobi Area Church Council, Kenya. Materials and Methods: The study was informed by the Cognitive Behavioral Theory and the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement. The study used a causal research design, and census sampling technique was adopted. The sample size of the study was 114 widows. The Brief Grief Questionnaire (BGQ), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Psychological Well-being Scale (PWB) were used for data collection. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results: The findings showed that most (n = 66, 64.1%) of the widows were at high grief reaction, 22.4% (n = 31) of the widows had moderate grief reaction, while 13.5% (n = 15) were at low grief reaction. Also, 62.2% (n = 50) of the participants scored a high level of psychological wellbeing, 24.3% (n = 34) were at moderate level of psychological wellbeing, while 13. % (n = 28) of the participants were at low level of psychological wellbeing. Conclusion: The study established that grief counseling influenced the psychological wellbeing among widows (F- value (1, 5013.255) = .208, p = .030 ≤ 0.05). The study recommended that the leadership of the Africa Inland Church could work in collaboration with psychologists to formulate programs to reach out to the widows for psycho-education and possible coping strategies with regards to grief reaction

Social influences on the psychological well-being of elderly individuals

PurposeThis research aims to analyze the primary social factors influencing the mental health and happiness of older adults. Specifically, the paper identifies the elements of social influences on the psychological well-being of elderly individuals.Design/methodology/approachEmploying a quantitative research methodology, survey data were collected to examine the psychological well-being of older adults, utilizing SPSS software version 28.0 for data analysis.FindingsPsychological well-being in the elderly is intricately linked to personal, cognitive, emotional and social aspects. Seniors experiencing reduced loneliness, ample communication opportunities, active social engagement and living with family members demonstrate higher levels of psychological well-being. Surprisingly, details of daily activities in senior age showed little impact on psychological well-being.Research limitations/implicationsThe research results may lack generalizability due to the chosen approach, prompting a need for further testing of proposed propositions.Originality/valueThis study fulfills an identified need to explore how psychological well-being is established in an elderly society, shedding light on critical social determinants.

Psychological well-being and emotional intelligence in undergraduate nursing students as predictors of academic success

BackgroundAcademic performance is influenced by a complex interplay of multiple factors whose relationships often do not follow straightforward patterns. Despite extensive research, understanding of these dynamics remains inconclusive. In particular, several studies highlight that higher emotional intelligence is associated with better academic outcomes and that people with elevated levels of psychological well-being also tend to achieve higher grades. ObjectiveThis study examines the associations between emotional intelligence, psychological well-being and academic performance among undergraduate nursing students. Specifically, it seeks to deepen our understanding of how emotional intelligence affects academic achievement, with psychological well-being potentially serving as a mediator. DesignA cross-sectional correlational design was employed. SettingsThe study involved a convenience sample of undergraduate nursing students from various degree programmes affiliated with the primary author. Participants394 undergraduate nursing students participated in the study, 249 identified as female and 145 as male. MethodsParticipants completed a quantitative survey during class hours, providing data on demographics, academic average scores and self-report measures of perceived emotional intelligence and psychological well-being. Data were evaluated using Pearson's correlations and serial multiple mediation analyses. ResultsThe findings revealed significant positive relationships between emotional intelligence, psychological well-being and academic performance. Serial mediation assessments indicated that dimensions of emotional intelligence influence academic performance both directly and indirectly through psychological well-being. Specifically, flourishing partially mediated the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance, directly influencing academic outcomes. ConclusionsThis study underscores the critical role of emotional management skills in academic performance, with psychological well-being acting as a partial mediator in this relationship. Consequently, undergraduate nursing students with enhanced emotional management abilities and higher levels of psychological well-being are likely to achieve better academic outcomes.

Psychological well-being modulates neural synchrony during naturalistic fMRI

Psychological well-being (PWB) is a combination of feeling good and functioning efficiently, and has a significant relationship with physical and mental health. Previous research has shown that PWB is associated with improvements in selective attention, mindfulness, semantic self-images, and adaptive decision making, however, it is unclear how these differences manifest in the brain. Naturalistic stimuli better encapsulate everyday experiences and can elicit more “true-to-life” neural responses. The current study seeks to identify how differing levels of PWB modulate neural synchrony in response to an audiovisual film. With consideration of the inherent variability of the literature, we aim to ascertain the validity of the regions previously associated with PWB. We identified that higher levels of PWB were associated with heightened stimulus driven neural synchrony in the bilateral superior parietal lobule, right planum temporale, and left superior temporal gyrus, and that lower levels of PWB were associated with heightened neural synchrony in the bilateral lateral occipital cortex and precuneus. Taken together, this research suggests that there is an association between differing levels of PWB and differential neural synchrony during movie-watching. PWB may therefore have an effect on complex, multimodal processing.

FEATURES OF SOCIAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE RE-SOCIALIZATION OF RUSSIAN RETIRED OFFICERS IN MODERN CONDITIONS

The article examines the features of social technologies for the re-socialization of Russian officers who were discharged into the reserve in modern conditions. The results of the study showed that re-socialization programs have both strengths and weaknesses. The high level of psychological well-being among former officers indicates the effectiveness of psychological support, but social adaptation and professional reintegration require significant improvements. Representatives of government agencies and non-profit organizations generally positively assess the existing system, recognizing the need for improvement. Employers are satisfied with the qualifications and skills of former officers but point to the need to strengthen psychological support.

Emotional competences as predictors of psychological wellbeing and quality of life of supplementary grandparents caregivers.

Grandparents are increasingly becoming key figures in the supplementary care of grandchildren. Based on the Resilience Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation, the present study aims to analyze the emotional competences that canpl predict higher levels of psychological wellbeing and quality of life in supplementary grandparents caregivers. A sample of 270 supplementary grandparents caregivers living in Spain participated. Most participants were women (71.1%), and the mean age was 67.83 years (SD = 6.26). Most participants were occasional caregivers, that is, they care for less than 10 h per week (76.3%). We conducted hierarchical multiple regression analysis, one for psychological wellbeing and the other for quality of life. The regression model for psychological wellbeing identified that age, management of caregiving stress, self-confidence in the caregiving role, management of work-life balance difficulties and emotional self-regulation explained 32.8% of its variance. The regression model for quality of life showed that age, type of grandparent caregiver, management of caregiving stress, management of work-life balance difficulties and emotional self-regulation explained 31.2% of its variance. This study focuses on supplementary grandparents caregivers, whereas literature has tended to look at primary grandparents caregivers. The results highlight the role of emotional competences as predictors of supplementary grandparents caregivers' psychological wellbeing and quality of life, overcoming the usual tendency in the literature to focus on the negative consequences of grandparents caregiving for grandchildren, and emphasizing the competences that grandparents have to cope with this care in a satisfactory way, which, moreover, can be trained.

Correlation Between Spirituality and The Level of Psychological Well-Being in the Elderly at Banyuwangi Nursing Home

Background: Elderly in nursing homes face various problems such as a decline in body condition and health due to the aging process which has an impact on psychological well- being. Problems in psychological well-being can be addressed through spirituality, which functions as a coping mechanism. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the relationship between spirituality and the level of psychological well-being in elderly at nursing home in Banyuwangi. Methods: This study is a quantitative study, correlational study design with a cross sectional approach. The sample in this study consisted of 42 respondents selected using a total sampling according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. This study used the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) questionnaire and the Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS) questionnaire. Results: Descriptive analysis showed that the majority of elderly at nursing home in Banyuwangi had a high level of spirituality (50.0%) and a high level of psychological well-being (38.1%). Based on the Kendall's Tau b correlation test, the p-value was 0.001, indicating there is relationship between spirituality and the level of psychological well-being in the elderly at nursing home in Banyuwangi. The results of the r-value was +0.487, show there is a positive correlation which means the higher the level of spirituality in the elderly, the higher the level of psychological well-being. Conclussion: spirituality has an important role in improving the psychological well-being of the elderly, so efforts can be made to improve the psychological well-being in the elderly by increasing spirituality in the elderly.

Positive mental health, depression and burnout in healthcare workers during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Few studies focused on healthcare workers' positive mental health (i.e. high levels of psychological well-being) and its association with anxiety, depression and burnout in the second wave of the pandemic. To evaluate the protective role of well-being in buffering burnout and psychological distress. We evaluated 173 Italian healthcare workers with indicators of psychological distress (Depression Anxiety Stress Scales [DASS]-21), burnout (Copenhagen Burnout Inventory [CBI]) and positive mental health (Mental Health Continuum) and we cross-classified them according to their levels of mental health (flourishing, languishing and moderate mental health) and their levels of anxiety, depression and burnout. Forty-eight per cent of health workers were classified as flourishing, 10% as languishing and 42% as moderate mental health. Flourishing individuals presented lower scores on DASS and CBI scales, whereas no differences emerged between languishing and moderate mental health groups. More than 80% of health workers with clinically significant symptoms of anxiety, depression and risk of burnout were classified as not flourishing. This investigation documented the presence of flourishing mental health in almost half of the sample of Italian healthcare workers. However, those with moderate or languishing mental health manifested higher levels of anxiety, depression and higher risks of burnout. The study confirms the importance of maintaining and/or promoting the well-being of this population, with a crucial role of mental health nurses who can easily approach other healthcare workers and provide them informational (training, guidelines) and emotional support programmes (psychoeducation, mental health support team, peer support and counselling) when facing adverse working conditions.

Patient satisfaction after Nuss procedure with one or two bars in young adults: A propensity score-matched cohort study.

The Nuss procedure is the primary treatment for pectus excavatum (PE), but patient expectations are not always met. In our unit, our standard approach in the last few years has been the routine application of two bars instead of one. We aimed to retrospectively assess the impact of this approach on patient satisfaction, quality of life (QoL) and safety. A retrospective study included 182 patients over 16 years old who underwent the Nuss procedure for PE between January 2007 and September 2021. Patients were categorized into one-bar or two-bar correction groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used, resulting in 30 patients in each group. Primary endpoints were QoL and cosmetic satisfaction, while secondary endpoints included complications and recurrence. After PSM, both groups showed similar general characteristics. Patients treated with two bars reported fewer psychological complaints post-surgery (93.3% vs. 73.3%, p = 0.031). There were no significant differences in QoL improvement (96.7% in both groups, p = 0.197), perioperative complications (p = 0.771) or recurrence (one patient in the one-bar group, p = 1.000). Our study reveals that patients undergoing the Nuss Procedure for PE with two bars exhibit comparable clinical outcomes and QoL to those with one bar. However, patients with two bars may have higher levels of psychological well-being and satisfaction, indicating potential benefits associated with this approach. These findings suggest potential advantages of the two-bar approach, but further research with larger sample sizes is warranted to confirm these observations.

Operational Stress and Psychological Well-Being Among Police Officers in Benue State Police Command: The Mediating Role of Coping Strategies

Psychological Well-being is an important concept used in behaviour sciences to evaluate the state of an individual in terms of perception, feelings, cognition and internal experience. This study investigated Operational Stress and Psychological Well-being among Police Officers in Benue State Police Command: The Mediating Role of Coping Strategies. The study employed a Cross-Sectional Survey Design, where three hundred and fifty seven (357) Police Officers consisting of 219 (61.3%) Males and 134 (37.5%) Females were used for the study. Their ages ranged from 19 to 59 years with the Mean of 38.13 (SD=9.54128). The Operational Police Stress Questionnaire (PSQ-Op), Brief-COPE Inventory and Psychological General Well-Being Index (PGWB) were used for data collection. Statistical analysis involved the use of Multiple Regression and PROCESS Mediation Analyses. Findings from the hypotheses indicated that, Operational Stress has made an independent significant contribution to Psychological Wellbeing of Police Officers in Benue State Police Command. Coping Strategies significantly influenced Psychological Well-being among Police Officers in Benue State Police Command. The result further showed that, Operational Stress and Coping Strategies jointly influenced Psychological Well-being of Police Officers in Benue State Police Command. Finally, Selfdistraction, Denial, Active Coping, Substance Use, Instrumental Support, Venting, Planning, Acceptance and Religion did not significantly mediate the relationship between Operational Stress and Psychological Well-being among Police Officers; while Emotional Support, Behavioral Disengagement, Positive Reframing, Humor, and Self-blame significantly mediated the relationship between Operational Stress and Psychological Well-being among Police Officers in Benue State Police Command. Based on the findings, it was recommended that, Police Officers should be enlightened on how to manage Operational Stress and develop good coping strategies. On policy basis, it was recommended that, Government should evolve policies that are aimed at training and retraining Police Officers on appropriate Coping Strategies; which will help in reducing Operational Stress and on the other hand increase high level of Psychological Well-being among Police Officers. Also, Non-governmental organizations with caring mind should support Police with logistics that will help reduce Operational Stress. This will help to achieve high state of Psychological Well-being and enhance better policing among Police Officers. Finally, more researches should be encouraged on the subject matter for further identification of long term solutions to problems affecting Psychological Well-being of Police Officers in Benue State Police Command in particular, and Nigeria at large.

The Role of Social Support and Sleep Quality in the Psychological Well-Being of Nurses and Doctors.

Social support enhances the development of adaptive strategies to cope with difficulties, which may affect psychological well-being. Sleep quality has been highlighted as having a relevant role in psychological well-being. The present study aimed to analyse the role of social support and sleep quality in the psychological well-being of health professionals (nurses and doctors) compared to the general population. The sample comprised 466 adults aged between 18 and 75 (M = 43.4; SD = 10.8), of which 272 were the general population and 194 nurses and doctors. Data were collected through a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Psychological Well-Being Manifestation Measure Scale. Nurses presented less balance (also doctors), sociability and happiness than other professionals. Less significant sociability was observed in nurses compared with doctors. The results also allowed us to observe the positive role of social support from significant others on social involvement and sociability and the positive role of the family in self-esteem. Social support from friends played a positive role in all dimensions of psychological well-being. Males had a higher prevalence of psychological well-being. Other professionals and sleep quality show high levels of psychological well-being in all dimensions. Data discussion highlights the role of social support, sleep, and sex and the implications of health professions (nurses and doctors) on psychological well-being.

Language and Mental Health: Investigating the Relationship between Linguistic Expression and Psychological Well-being

Employing a comprehensive approach, we conducted interviews with 100 individuals spanning diverse backgrounds and mentalities, observing them over a six-month period. Our research utilized both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to provide a nuanced understanding of the subject matter. Methodology: Through our investigation, we uncovered compelling evidence suggesting a significant correlation between language use and psychological well-being. Quantitative analysis revealed consistent patterns indicating that individuals who employed more positive, motivational language exhibited higher levels of psychological well-being compared to those who frequently used abusive or negative words. Furthermore, qualitative data shed light on the intricacies of linguistic expression, highlighting the impact of specific words and phrases on individuals' mental states. Participants reported feeling uplifted and empowered when exposed to motivational language, whereas abusive language often triggered feelings of distress and negativity. Findings: These findings underscore the profound influence of language on mental health, emphasizing the importance of fostering positive communication patterns for overall well-being. By promoting awareness of the power of language and encouraging the use of supportive, uplifting words, interventions aimed at improving mental health outcomes can be developed. Unique contribution to theory, policy and practice: This study contributes valuable insights into the relationship between language and psychological well-being, demonstrating the transformative potential of linguistic expression in shaping mental health outcomes. It underscores the need for further research and the development of targeted interventions to harness the positive impact of language on mental well-being.

Особенности психологических защит и копинг-стратегий у педагогов дошкольных образовательных учреждений с разным уровнем психологического благополучия

&lt;p&gt;The aim of the work was to identify the features of psychological defenses and coping strategies among teachers of preschool educational institutions with different levels of psychological well-being. The study involved 62 educators of preschool educational institutions in the city of Rostov-on-Don, the city of Aksai and the village of Rassvet, Rostov Region. The following methods were used: &amp;ldquo;Scale of psychological well-being&amp;rdquo; by K. Riff, technique for measuring psychological defense by E.R. Pilyugina, R.F. Suleimanov, questionnaire &amp;ldquo;Types of orientations in difficult situations&amp;rdquo; by E.V. Bityutskaya, A.A. Korneeva. As a result of the study, it was found that teachers with a high level of psychological well-being more often use adaptive psychological defenses, teachers with an average level of psychological well-being more often use psychological defense of the infantile type, teachers with a low level of psychological well-being more often use psychological defense of the psychotic, as well as infantile and neurotic types. Teachers of preschool educational institutions with a high level of psychological well-being are distinguished by their preference for coping strategies related to the type &amp;ldquo;Orientation towards rapprochement, interaction with difficulty.&amp;rdquo; Teachers of preschool educational institutions with an average and, especially, a low level of psychological well-being tend to be more inclined to use coping strategies related to the type &amp;ldquo;Orientation towards leaving and moving away from difficulties.&amp;rdquo; It is recommended to use the results of the study in psychoprophylactic and psychocorrective work with preschool teachers.&lt;/p&gt;

This study aims to validate the role of positive psychological capital in the structural relationship between parental autonomy support and college students’ psychological happiness based on self-determination theory. The study also aims to explore practical interventions to promote psychological happiness among college students based on empirical evidence. The research method was to distribute questionnaires to college students in Busan Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangnam-do Province from September 2023 to November 2023, and statistically analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0 programs based on 289 data without missing data. The findings were as follows First, higher levels of parental autonomy support were associated with higher levels of psychological well-being. Second, higher levels of parental autonomy support were associated with higher levels of positive psychological capital. Third, higher levels of positive psychological capital were associated with higher levels of psychological happiness. Fourth, indirectly, positive psychological capital was found to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between parental autonomy support and psychological happiness. These findings have implications for providing an empirical basis for enhancing self-determination and promoting psychological happiness in college students, who are pre-socialized adults. Therefore, it can be applied directly to parent education programs that enable parents to promote their positive psychological capital and psychological well-being through supporting college students’ autonomy, and indirectly to family counseling and family therapy to promote family members’ self-determination.

Parent strategies to help emerging adults manage stress are associated with their mental health: A dyadic coping perspective.

Emerging adults (EAs) are at high risk for mental health challenges and frequently reach out to their parents for support. Yet little is known about how parents help emerging adults manage and cope with daily stressors and which strategies help and which hinder EA mental health. In this cross-sectional pilot study of students at a 2- and 4-year college (ages 18-25, N = 680, mean age = 19.0), we extend models of dyadic coping from intimate relationships to the parent-emerging adult relationship and test whether six specific parent strategies to help emerging adults manage stress are associated with EA mental health. Emerging adults with parents who provided problem and emotion-focused supportive dyadic coping, delegated dyadic coping, and common/joint dyadic coping reported fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as higher levels of psychological well-being. In contrast, college-attending emerging adults who reported higher levels of parent-provided negative dyadic coping reported higher levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms and lower psychological well-being. Parent-emerging adult dyadic coping is a fruitful area for future research and intervention development.

Functional Characteristics and Coping Strategies among Rugby Athletes: A Cluster Analysis Approach.

The developing domain of mental health in sports has gained much interest, acknowledging its pivotal role in athlete performance and well-being. The aim of this research is to provide a quantitative description concerning the levels of mental health, physical activity, cognitive fusion, cognitive flexibility, and coping strategies that characterize rugby athletes by using a data-driven approach. A total of 92 rugby athletes took part in this study and filled out a set of self-administered questionnaires. A correlational analysis showed that general well-being was positively associated with years spent playing rugby (r = 0.23) and coping mechanisms (r = 0.29). Athletes' well-being was also negatively correlated with cognitive inflexibility (r = -0.41) and cognitive fusion (r = -0.39). A k-means cluster analysis identified two unique groups: group 1, characterized by higher levels of psychological well-being, lower levels of physical activity, greater cognitive flexibility, improved coping techniques, and reduced cognitive fusion, and group 2, which exhibits opposite characteristics. The discrepancies observed in psychological characteristics such as coping strategies, cognitive fusion, and cognitive inflexibility highlight their potential impact on the general health of rugby players. To comprehend the complex interplay between psychological and physical elements in rugby athletes, long-term studies with larger samples are crucial.

Daily dynamics of feeling loved by parents and their prospective implications for adolescent flourishing.

Feeling loved by one's caregiver is essential for individual flourishing (i.e., high levels of psychological well-being in multiple dimensions). Although similar constructs are found to benefit adolescent well-being, research that directly tests parental love as a feeling from the recipient's perspective is rare. Historically, parental love has been measured using single-assessment methods and assumed to be a stable, trait-like characteristic; yet, like any feeling, it may fluctuate in meaningful ways on a day-to-day basis-the implications of which are unknown. Using a sample of 150 adolescents (59.3% female; ages 14-16), this study estimated level (person's mean level across days) and instability (fluctuations across days) of feeling loved by a caregiver across 21 days for each adolescent, and then examined their prospective effects on adolescent flourishing 1 year later. After controlling for demographics (adolescent age, gender, family income, and parent's sex) and variable baseline levels, feeling more loved by one's caregiver in daily life significantly predicted higher levels of flourishing in two global measures 1 year later. Moreover, level and instability of feeling loved by one's caregiver played different roles for different dimensions of flourishing: higher levels significantly predicted higher levels of autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth, whereas higher instability significantly predicted lower levels of positive relations with others and environmental mastery. Findings emphasized the importance of considering daily dynamics of feeling loved by one's caregiver and demonstrated that level (of feeling loved) is particularly important for intrapersonal aspects while instability is particularly important for interpersonal aspects of flourishing. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Adolescents feeling more loved by their caregiver in daily life had higher levels of overall flourishing 1 year later. Level (of feeling loved) is particularly important for intrapersonal aspects of adolescent flourishing, including autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth. Stability (of feeling loved) is particularly important for interpersonal aspects of adolescent flourishing, including positive relations with others and environmental mastery.
