Development of a DualEmission Laser-Induced Fluorescence (DELIF) Method for Long-Term Temperature Measurements

The fluorescence intensity of fluorescent dyes typically employed in the dual-emission laser-induced fluorescence (DELIF) method gradually degrades as the excitation time increases, and the degradation rate depends on the type of fluorescent dye used. Therefore, the DELIF method is unsuitable for long-term temperature measurements. In this study, we focused on the fluorescence intensity ratio of a single fluorescent dye at two fluorescence wavelengths and developed a DELIF method for long-term temperature measurements based on this ratio. The fluorescence intensity characteristics of Fluorescein disodium and Rhodamine B, which are typically used in the DELIF method, in the temperature range of 10–60 °C were comprehensively investigated using two high-speed monochrome complementary metal-oxide semiconductor cameras and narrow bandpass filters. Interestingly, the ratio of the fluorescence intensity of each fluorescent dye at the peak emission wavelength of the fluorescence spectrum, λ, to the fluorescence intensity at wavelengths very close to the peak wavelength (λ ± 10 nm) was highly sensitive to temperature variations but not excitation time. Particularly, when Rhodamine B was used, the selection of the fluorescence intensity ratios at a wavelength combination of 589 and 600 nm enabled highly accurate temperature measurements with a temperature resolution of ≤0.042 °C. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity ratio varied negligibly throughout the excitation time of 180 min, with a measurement uncertainty (95% confidence interval) of 0.045 °C at 20 °C. The results demonstrate that the proposed DELIF method enables highly accurate long-term temperature measurements.

Measurement of Laminar Burning Speed of Methane/Hydrogen/Air Mixtures at High Pressures and Temperatures

Abstract Green hydrogen which could be produced from renewable sources by solar water splitting or photovoltaic electrolysis will play an important role in achieving net-zero in the near future. One possible approach will be to mix hydrogen with natural gas for power generation in gas turbine systems. It is necessary to know the physical properties of burning speed of the mixture of natural gas and hydrogen. Since natural gas is mainly made up of methane, the burning speed of mixtures of methane and hydrogen has been measured and reported in this paper. Adding hydrogen gas during the combustion of methane enhances flame stability, expands the lean flammability range, decreases pollutant emissions, and boosts the burning speed. Burning speed measurement is performed in a cylindrical and spherical chamber. The pressure rise due to combustion was measured by a pressure transducer on the top of cylindrical and spherical chambers. The Z-shaped Schlieren system, equipped with a high-speed complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera, obtains pictures of flame propagation. Laminar burning speed is measured exclusively for flames that have a smooth and spherical shape. In addition, burning speed is only measured for large flame radii with low stretch rates. Burning speed is calculated by a thermodynamic model with the pressure rise data as an input. Measurements cover a wide range of operating conditions. The hydrogen mole fraction is 0%, 20%, and 40%, with temperatures of 298–400 K, pressures between 0.5 and 5.5 atmospheres and equivalence ratios of 0.8, 1, and 1.2.

Ultrafast radiographic imaging and tracking: An overview of instruments, methods, data, and applications

Ultrafast radiographic imaging and tracking (U-RadIT) use state-of-the-art ionizing particle and light sources to experimentally study sub-nanosecond transients or dynamic processes in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, materials science and other fields. These processes are fundamental to modern technologies and applications, such as nuclear fusion energy, advanced manufacturing, communication, and green transportation, which often involve one mole or more atoms and elementary particles, and thus are challenging to compute by using the first principles of quantum physics or other forward models. One of the central problems in U-RadIT is to optimize information yield through, e.g. high-luminosity X-ray and particle sources, efficient imaging and tracking detectors, novel methods to collect data, and large-bandwidth online and offline data processing, regulated by the underlying physics, statistics, and computing power. We review and highlight recent progress in: (a.) Detectors such as high-speed complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) cameras, hybrid pixelated array detectors integrated with Timepix4 and other application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), and digital photon detectors; (b.) U-RadIT modalities such as dynamic phase contrast imaging, dynamic diffractive imaging, and four-dimensional (4D) particle tracking; (c.) U-RadIT data and algorithms such as neural networks and machine learning, and (d.) Applications in ultrafast dynamic material science using XFELs, synchrotrons and laser-driven sources. Hardware-centric approaches to U-RadIT optimization are constrained by detector material properties, low signal-to-noise ratio, high cost and long development cycles of critical hardware components such as ASICs. Interpretation of experimental data, including comparisons with forward models, is frequently hindered by sparse measurements, model and measurement uncertainties, and noise. Alternatively, U-RadIT make increasing use of data science and machine learning algorithms, including experimental implementations of compressed sensing. Machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches, refined by physics and materials information, may also contribute significantly to data interpretation, uncertainty quantification and U-RadIT optimization.

Using a fast hybrid pixel detector for dose-efficient diffraction imaging beam-sensitive organic molecular thin films

We discuss the benefits and showcase the applications of using a fast, hybrid-pixel detector (HPD) for 4D-STEM experiments and emphasize that in diffraction imaging the structure of molecular nano-crystallites in organic solar cell thin films with a dose-efficient modality 4D-scanning confocal electron diffraction (4D-SCED). With 4D-SCED, spot diffraction patterns form from an interaction area of a few nm while the electron beam rasters over the sample, resulting in high dose effectiveness yet highly demanding on the detector in frame speed, sensitivity, and single-pixel count rate. We compare the datasets acquired with 4D-SCED using a fast HPD with those using state-of-the-art complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) cameras to map the in-plane orientation of π-stacking nano-crystallites of small molecule DRCN5T in a blend of DRCN5T: PC71BM after solvent vapor annealing. The high-speed CMOS camera, using a scintillator optimized for low doses, showed impressive results for electron sensitivity and low noise. However, the limited speed restricted practical experimental conditions and caused unintended damage to small and weak nano-crystallites. The fast HPD, with a speed three orders of magnitude higher, allows a much higher probe current yet a lower total dose on the sample, and more scan points cover a large field of view in less time. A lot more faint diffraction signals that correspond to just a few electron events are detected. The improved performance of direct electron detectors opens more possibilities to enhance the characterization of beam-sensitive materials using 4D-STEM techniques.

Quantitative Tomographic Laser Absorption Imaging of Atomic Potassium during Combustion of Potassium Chloride Salt and Biomass.

Gaseous potassium (K) species play an important role in biomass combustion processes, and imaging techniques are powerful tools to investigate the related gas-phase chemistry. Here, laser absorption imaging of gaseous atomic K in flames is implemented using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy at 769.9 nm and a high-speed complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera recording at 30 kfps. Atomic K absorption spectra are acquired for each camera pixel in a field of view of 28 × 28 mm at a rate of 100 Hz. The technique is used to determine the spatial distribution of atomic K concentration during the conversion of potassium chloride (KCl) salt and wheat straw particles in a laminar premixed CH4/air flame with an image pixel resolution of up to 120 μm. Due to axisymmetry in setup geometry and, consequently, atomic K distributions, the radial atomic K concentration fields could be reconstructed by one-dimensional tomography. For the KCl sample, the K concentration field was in excellent agreement with previous point measurements. In the case of wheat straw, atomic K concentrations of around 3 ppm were observed in a cylindrical flame during devolatilization. In the char conversion phase, a spherical layer of atomic K, with concentrations reaching 25 ppm, was found within 5 mm of the particle surface, while the concentration rapidly decreased to sub-ppm levels along the vertical axis. In both cases, a thin (∼1 mm) layer without any atomic K was observed in close vicinity to the particle, suggesting that the potassium was initially not released in its atomic form.

Ultrabroadband and Low-Dispersion Multiple-Joint Transmission-Line for Terahertz Region

A multiple-joint transmission line based on the principle of the periscope was developed to realize the flexible guidance of terahertz (THz) waves. The transmission line has a slightly larger diameter than the standard plastic hollow-pipe waveguide, sufficient stability, low transmission loss, ultrabroadband spectrum, and low dispersion. The transmission line is evaluated using a THz time-domain spectrometer consisting of reflective two-dimensional electro-optic sampling with a high-speed complementary metal-oxide semiconductor camera.

Simulation of High-Speed and Low-Power CMOS Binary Image Sensor Based on Gate/Body-Tied PMOSFET-Type Photodetector Using Double-Tail Comparator

In this paper, we propose a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) binary image sensor with a gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (PMOSFET)-type photodetector using a double-tail comparator for highspeed and low-power operations. The GBT photodetector is based on a PMOSFET tied with a floating gate (n+ polysilicon) and a body that amplifies the photocurrent generated by incident light. A double-tail comparator compares an input signal with a reference voltage and returns the output signal as either 0 or 1. The signal processing speed and power consumption of a double-tail comparator are superior over those of conventional comparator. Further, the use of a double-sampling circuit reduces the standard deviation of the output voltages. Therefore, the proposed CMOS binary image sensor using a double-tail comparator might have advantages, such as low power consumption and high signal processing speed. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor is designed and simulated using the standard 0.18 μm CMOS process.

High-speed back-illuminated CMOS sensor for photon-counting-type imaging-spectroscopy in the soft X-ray range

Abstract Using a high-speed CMOS sensor, we realized a photon-counting-type imaging-spectrometer in the soft X-ray range for studying the solar corona. The key technology enabling this observation is a sensor with the following capabilities. The sensor is pixelized with a pixel size of 11 μ m and a pixel array of 2048 pixels × 2048 pixels. Furthermore, the sensor is sensitive to X-rays ranging from ∼ 0.5 keV to ∼ 5 keV. The sensor outputs a signal that is proportional to the energy of the incident X-rays. The signal generated by a single X-ray photon does not spread across an area of more than 3 pixels × 3 pixels, in which case signal loss does not occur. The readout noise of the sensor is 2.1 electrons at the 1-sigma level. The sensor can perform continuous exposure at a rate of 1000 times per second for an area of 100 pixels × 2048 pixels. This high-speed readout capability is a special requirement for observation of the solar corona, because energetic solar phenomena, e.g., solar flares, have lifetimes ranging from several minutes to several tens of minutes. We evaluated the above capabilities for the back-illuminated Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) sensor developed by Gpixel, “GSENSE400-BSI UV” using an 55Fe X-ray source, and confirmed the capability of this CMOS sensor to be sufficient for observations of the solar corona.

High-efficiency fast X-ray imaging detector development at SSRF.

Indirect X-ray imaging detectors consisting of scintillator screens, long-working-distance microscope lenses and scientific high-speed complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) cameras are usually used to realize fast X-ray imaging with white-beam synchrotron radiation. However, the detector efficiency is limited by the coupling efficiency of the long-working-distance microscope lenses, which is only about 5%. A long-working-distance microscope lenses system with a large numerical aperture (NA) is designed to increase the coupling efficiency. It offers an NA of 0.5 at 8× magnification. The Mitutoyo long-working-distance microscope lenses system offers an NA of 0.21 at 7.5× magnification. Compared with the Mitutoyo system, the developed long-working-distance microscope lenses system offers about twice the NA and four times the coupling efficiency. In the indirect X-ray imaging detector, a 50 µm-thick LuAG:Ce scintillator matching with the NA, and a high-speed visible-light CMOS FastCAM SAZ Photron camera are used. Test results show that the detector realized fast X-ray imaging with a frame rate of 100000 frames s-1 and fast X-ray microtomography with a temporal sampling rate up to 25 Hz (25 tomograms s-1).

Modal analysis using camera-based heterodyne interferometry and acoustic excitation

Abstract Vibration modal analysis is a significant technique in dynamic analysis that has been widely used for structural damage detection and health monitoring. To accurately identify the modal parameters of a structure, a non-destructive method using camera-based heterodyne interferometry and acoustic excitation is proposed in this paper for modal analysis. Based on a high-speed complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera, full-field images of a vibrating structure with a high-density spatial resolution can be rapidly collected and processed to extract adequate vibration response data for modal analysis using heterodyne interferometry. Combined with an acoustic wave as an excitation source to trigger the vibration response of the structure, impairment can be avoided. To verify the validity of the proposed method, an experiment for extracting the modal parameters of a steel cantilever beam is introduced. During the test, the vibration response of a beam under the excitation of random white noise is detected using heterodyne interferometry to extract the natural frequencies. The mode shapes are retrieved from the full-field vibration response determined via heterodyne interferometry using an acoustic wave at natural frequencies. The results show significant consistency with those from finite element analysis (FEA) and laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV), demonstrating that the proposed method is an effective technique for vibration modal analysis.

The Critical Pressure at the Onset of Flame Instability of Syngas/Air/Diluent Outwardly Expanding Flame at Different Initial Temperatures and Pressures

Syngas has gained attention recently due to its high energy density and environmentally friendly characteristics. Flame stability plays an important role in flame propagation in energy conversion devices. Experimental studies were performed in a cylindrical chamber to investigate flame instability of syngas/air/diluent mixture. A Z-shape Schlieren system coupled with a high-speed complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor camera was used to record flame pictures up to 40,000 frames per second. In this research, syngas is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and diluent is a blend of 14% CO2 and 86% N2 with the same specific heat as the burned gases. Three main flame instabilities namely Rayleigh–Taylor (body force) instability, hydrodynamic instability, and thermal-diffusive instability have been studied. For the onset of flame instability, a power law correlation for the ratio of critical pressure to initial pressure of syngas/air/diluent flames over a wide range of initial temperatures (298–450 K), initial pressures (1.0–2.0 atm), equivalence ratios (0.6–3.0), diluent concentrations (0–10%), and hydrogen percentages (5–25%) in the fuel has been developed.

High speed CMOS acquisition system based on FPGA embedded image processing for electro-optical measurements

Electro-optical measurements, i.e., optical waveguides and plasmonic based electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (P-EIS), are based on the sensitive dependence of refractive index of electro-optical sensors on surface charge density, modulated by an AC electrical field applied to the sensor surface. Recently, P-EIS has emerged as a new analytical tool that can resolve local impedance with high, optical spatial resolution, without using microelectrodes. This study describes a high speed image acquisition and processing system for electro-optical measurements, based on a high speed complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) board. The FPGA is used to configure CMOS parameters, as well as to receive and locally process the acquired images by performing Fourier analysis for each pixel, deriving the real and imaginary parts of the Fourier coefficients for the AC field frequencies. An AC field generator, for single or multi-sine signals, is synchronized with the high speed acquisition system for phase measurements. The system was successfully used for real-time angle-resolved electro-plasmonic measurements from 30 Hz up to 10 kHz, providing results consistent to ones obtained by a conventional electrical impedance approach. The system was able to detect amplitude variations with a relative variation of ±1%, even for rather low sampling rates per period (i.e., 8 samples per period). The PC (personal computer) acquisition and control software allows synchronized acquisition for multiple FPGA boards, making it also suitable for simultaneous angle-resolved P-EIS imaging.

Recent genome-wide association studies targeting atrial fibrillation (AF) have indicated a strong association between the genotype and electrophysiological phenotype in the atria. That encourages us to utilize a genetically-engineered mouse model to elucidate the mechanism of AF. However, it is difficult to evaluate the electrophysiological properties in murine atria due to their small size. This protocol describes the electrophysiological evaluation of atria using an optical mapping system with a high temporal and spatial resolution in Langendorff perfused murine hearts. The optical mapping system is assembled with dual high-speed complementary metal oxide semiconductor cameras and high magnification objective lenses, to detect the fluorescence of a voltage-sensitive dye and Ca2+ indicator. To focus on the assessment of murine atria, optical mapping is performed with an area of 2 mm × 2 mm or 10 mm x 10 mm, with a 100 × 100 resolution (20 µm/pixel or 100 µm/pixel) and sampling rate of up to 10 kHz (0.1 ms) at maximum. A 1-French size quadripolar electrode pacing catheter is placed into the right atrium through the superior vena cava avoiding any mechanical damage to the atrium, and pacing stimulation is delivered through the catheter. An electrophysiological study is performed with programmed stimulation including constant pacing, burst pacing, and up to triple extrastimuli pacing. Under a spontaneous or pacing rhythm, the optical mapping recorded the action potential duration, activation map, conduction velocity, and Ca2+ transient individually in the right and left atria. In addition, the programmed stimulation also determines the inducibility of atrial tachyarrhythmias. Precise activation mapping is performed to identify the propagation of the excitation in the atrium during an induced atrial tachyarrhythmia. Optical mapping with a specialized setting enables a thorough electrophysiological evaluation of the atrium in murine pathological models.

Effects of Process Variations in a HCMOS IC using a Monte Carlo SPICE Simulation

In this paper, effects of process variations in a HCMOS (High-Speed Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) IC (Integrated Circuit) are examined using a Monte Carlo SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) simulation. The variations of the IC are L and VTO variations. An evaluation method is used to evaluate the effects of the variations by modeling it using a normal (Gaussian) distribution. The simulation results show that the IC may be detected as a defective IC caused by the variations based on large supply currents flow to it.

A novel high-speed CMOS circuit based on a gang of capacitors

ABSTRACTThere is no doubt that complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) circuits with wide fan-in suffers from the relatively sluggish operation. In this paper, a circuit that contains a gang of capacitors sharing their charge with each other is proposed as an alternative to long N-channel MOS and P-channel MOS stacks. The proposed scheme is investigated quantitatively and verified by simulation using the 45-nm CMOS technology with VDD = 1 V. The time delay, area and power consumption of the proposed scheme are investigated and compared with the conventional static CMOS logic circuit. It is verified that the proposed scheme achieves 52% saving in the average propagation delay for eight inputs and that it has a smaller area compared to the conventional CMOS logic when the number of inputs exceeds three and a smaller power consumption for a number of inputs exceeding two. The impacts of process variations, component mismatches and technology scaling on the proposed scheme are also investigated.

Investigation of transient ignition processes in a model scramjet pilot cavity using simultaneous 100 kHz formaldehyde planar laser-induced fluorescence and CH* chemiluminescence imaging

Ignition processes in scramjet pilot cavities are highly transient events that are influenced by factors including freestream Mach number and inlet geometry, turbulence intensity, cavity geometry, ignition source, and fueling composition and flow rate. In particular, the location of the flame kernel and associated propagation rate of the flame front throughout the cavity can significantly influence the end state of the ignition process. In this work formaldehyde (CH2O) was used as a flame marker to track ignition progress in a plane throughout the span-wise width of the cavity, while chemiluminescence imaging provided path-integrated flame location along the span-wise and axial directions. Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) excitation utilized the 355nm frequency-tripled output of an Nd:YAG burst-mode laser operating at 50–100kHz over 10ms with available pulse energy up to 80mJ. Simultaneous CH* chemiluminescence imaging from the top of the cavity was obtained with a high-speed complementary metal-oxide semiconductor camera. A freestream Mach number of 2 with ethylene fuel rates from 55–90 standard liters per minute were examined along with two different ignition sources: a spark discharge and pulse detonator. The resulting formaldehyde PLIF and chemiluminescence images indicate a strong correlation between fueling rate and the delay between the onset of ignition and stable combustion. More importantly, the span-wise propagation rate and structure of the flame front is highly dependent on the fueling rate, burning region, and ignition source.

Optimal design of low power high gain and high speed CMOS circuits using fish swarm optimization algorithm

This work presents a swarm intelligent optimization methodology based on swarming principle and collective behaviour of natural species termed as fish swarm optimization algorithm (FSOA). It is applied for the optimization for the design of a Complementary Metal Oxide semiconductor (CMOS) two-stage comparator and a folded cascode operational trans-conductance (FCOTA). The basic idea of FSOA is to model the traditional behavior of fish such as preying, swarming followed by local fish of individual optimization for global search. The suitably chosen control parameters of FSOA balance the exploration and exploitation of search space. Results obtained by SPICE for the two analog circuits, justify the capability of producing a desired result and the superiority of FSOA over other evolutionary optimization algorithms like HS (harmonic search), PSO (particle swarm optimization) and DE (differential evolution) in terms of convergence speed and design performances. The results obtained using FSOA show improved performances for the designed analog circuits. The circuits designed using FSOA take lesser areas for MOS transistors; both dissipate low powers and provide high gains. The performances of FSOA based designed circuits are significantly better than those of reported works. Simulation results obtained from SPICE also prove that FSOA is the best in comparison with the previously reported techniques in terms of the area occupied by CMOS transistors, gain, power etc. Cadence version 5.10.41 is used to perform the simulation using TSMC 0.35μm and TSMC 1.25μm technology parameters for two-stage comparator and FCOTA, respectively.

High-Pressure Acceleration of Nanoliter Droplets in the Gas Phase in a Microchannel.

Microfluidics has been used to perform various chemical operations for pL–nL volumes of samples, such as mixing, reaction and separation, by exploiting diffusion, viscous forces, and surface tension, which are dominant in spaces with dimensions on the micrometer scale. To further develop this field, we previously developed a novel microfluidic device, termed a microdroplet collider, which exploits spatially and temporally localized kinetic energy. This device accelerates a microdroplet in the gas phase along a microchannel until it collides with a target. We demonstrated 6000-fold faster mixing compared to mixing by diffusion; however, the droplet acceleration was not optimized, because the experiments were conducted for only one droplet size and at pressures in the 10–100 kPa range. In this study, we investigated the acceleration of a microdroplet using a high-pressure (MPa) control system, in order to achieve higher acceleration and kinetic energy. The motion of the nL droplet was observed using a high-speed complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera. A maximum droplet velocity of ~5 m/s was achieved at a pressure of 1–2 MPa. Despite the higher fluid resistance, longer droplets yielded higher acceleration and kinetic energy, because droplet splitting was a determining factor in the acceleration and using a longer droplet helped prevent it. The results provide design guidelines for achieving higher kinetic energies in the microdroplet collider for various microfluidic applications.

Fabrication of Advanced High-Speed Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor

In this study we propose the fabrication of advanced high-speed complementary metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (AHCMOS) by combining a P-carbon nanotube with n-metal oxide semiconductor (NMOS) on a single chip. The target is to achieve extremely high speed low-power dissipating miniaturized device with improved functionalities.  The technology of conventional metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) and nanotechnology are applied in this research. A P-carbon nanotube is complemented with the conventional NMOS all embedded on the same chip.  Although it is possible to fabricate both a P and N carbon nanotube to form a complementary pair, and also a PMOS and NMOS to form a complementary pair, however in this research we propose a hybrid structure with carbon nanotube transistor technology and complementary MOSFET technology. This device therefore combines the best characteristics of carbon nanotube technology and CMOS technology to provide enhanced logic functions that are optimized for the high-speed, low-power systems and miniaturized size ideal for very large scale integration (VLSI).
