Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Glacier-DEM product derived from the Chinese stereo mapping satellites

Abstract. The Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is an important basic data for glacier research on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. With the rapid development of China 's stereo mapping satellite, it is possible to obtain high-precision DEM in the glacier area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In this study, the stereo images and laser altimetry data of ZY-3 and GF-7 satellites were comprehensively used, and the matching and joint adjustment methods of laser elevation control points and stereo images were proposed. A high-precision DEM product in glacier area was established, and the elevation accuracy of DEM was verified by using UAV data and ICESat-2 data. The results show that the accuracy of GF-7 DEM is better than 1.5 m when the slope is less than 6 degrees, and the overall accuracy is better than 2.8 m. The accuracy of ZY-3 DEM is better than 3.5 m when the slope is less than 6 degrees, and the overall accuracy is better than 5.0 m. Compared with the open source DEM with medium spatial resolution, the DEM elevation accuracy based on domestic stereo mapping satellite images is better, and the grid is finer and more detailed to describe the texture characteristics of the end of the glaciers. Compared with the high spatial resolution data set HMA DEM, the ZY-3 DEM is slightly worse and the GF-7 DEM is better, and both the ZY-3 DEM and GF-7 DEM are better than the HMA DEM in terms of coverage integrity in the Qinghai- Tibet Plateau. Chinese stereo mapping satellites can generate high-precision DEM in the glacier area, and can provide more accurate and reliable terrain reference data than the existing open free data for the study of glaciers in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

HiMIC-Monthly: A 1 km high-resolution atmospheric moisture index collection over China, 2003–2020

Near-surface atmospheric moisture is a key environmental and hydro-climatic variable that has significant implications for the natural and human systems. However, high-resolution moisture data are severely lacking for fine-scale studies. Here, we develop the first 1 km high spatial resolution dataset of monthly moisture index collection in China (HiMIC-Monthly) over a long period of 2003~2020. HiMIC-Monthly is generated by the light gradient boosting machine algorithm (LightGBM) based on observations at 2,419 weather stations and multiple covariates, including land surface temperature, vapor pressure, land cover, impervious surface proportion, population density, and topography. This collection includes six commonly used moisture indices, enabling fine-scale assessment of moisture conditions from different perspectives. Results show that the HiMIC-Monthly dataset has a good performance, with R2 values for all six moisture indices exceeding 0.96 and root mean square error and mean absolute error values within a reasonable range. The dataset exhibits high consistency with in situ observations over various spatial and temporal regimes, demonstrating broad applicability and strong reliability.

Associations between heat waves and chronic kidney disease in China: The modifying role of land cover

The increasing frequency of heat waves under the global urbanization and climate change background poses elevating risks of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Nevertheless, there has been no evidence on associations between long-term exposures to heat waves and CKD as well as the modifying effects of land cover patterns. Based on a national representative population-based survey on CKD covering 47,086 adults and high spatial resolution datasets on temperature and land cover data, we found that annual days of exposure to heat waves were associated with increased odds of CKD prevalence. For one day/year increases in HW_975_4d (above 97.5 % of annual maximum temperature and lasting for at least 4 consecutive days), the odds ratio (OR) of CKD was 1.14 (95 %CI: 1.12, 1.15). Meanwhile, stronger associations were observed in regions with lower urbanicity [rural: 1.14 (95 %CI: 1.12, 1.16) vs urban: 1.07 (95 %CI: 1.03, 1.11), Pinteraction < 0.001], lower water body coverage [lower: 1.14 (95 %CI: 1.12, 1.16) vs higher: 1.02 (95 %CI: 0.98, 1.05), Pinteraction < 0.001], and lower impervious area coverage [lower: 1.16 (95 %CI: 1.14, 1.18) vs higher: 1.06 (95 %CI: 1.03, 1.10), Pinteraction = 0.008]. In addition, this study found disparities in modifying effects of water bodies and impervious areas in rural and urban settings. In rural regions, the associations between heat waves and CKD prevalence showed a consistent decreasing trend with increases in both proportions of water bodies and impervious areas (Pinteraction < 0.05). Nevertheless, in urban regions, we observed significant effect modification by water bodies, but not by impervious areas. Our study indicates the need for targeted land planning as part of adapting to the kidney impacts of heat waves, with a focus on urbanization in rural regions, as well as water body construction and utilization in both rural and urban regions.

Analyses of high spatial resolution datasets identify genes associated with multi-layered secondary cell wall thickening in Pinus bungeana.

Secondary cell wall (SCW) thickening is a major cellular developmental stage determining wood structure and properties. Although the molecular regulation of cell wall deposition during tracheary element differentiation has been well established in primary growth systems, less is known about the gene regulatory processes involved in the multi-layered SCW thickening of mature trees. Using third-generation [long-read single-molecule real-time (SMRT)] and second-generation [short-read sequencing by synthesis (SBS)] sequencing methods, we established a Pinus bungeana transcriptome resource with comprehensive functional and structural annotation for the first time. Using these approaches, we generated high spatial resolution datasets for the vascular cambium, xylem expansion regions, early SCW thickening, late SCW thickening and mature xylem tissues of 71-year-old Pinus bungeana trees. A total of 79 390 non-redundant transcripts, 31 808 long non-coding RNAs and 5147 transcription factors were annotated and quantified in different xylem tissues at all growth and differentiation stages. Furthermore, using this high spatial resolution dataset, we established a comprehensive transcriptomic profile and found that members of the NAC, WRKY, SUS, CESA and LAC gene families are major players in early SCW formation in tracheids, whereas members of the MYB and LBD transcription factor families are highly expressed during late SCW thickening. Our results provide new molecular insights into the regulation of multi-layered SCW thickening in conifers. The high spatial resolution datasets provided can serve as important gene resources for improving softwoods.

Multi‐Layer Evolution of Acoustic‐Gravity Waves and Ionospheric Disturbances Over the United States After the 2022 Hunga Tonga Volcano Eruption

AbstractThe Hunga‐Tonga Hunga‐Ha'apai volcano underwent a series of large‐magnitude eruptions that generated broad spectra of mechanical waves in the atmosphere. We investigate the spatial and temporal evolutions of fluctuations driven by atmospheric acoustic‐gravity waves (AGWs) and, in particular, the Lamb wave modes in high spatial resolution data sets measured over the Continental United States (CONUS), complemented with data over the Americas and the Pacific. Along with &gt;800 barometer sites, tropospheric observations, and Total Electron Content data from &gt;3,000 receivers, we report detections of volcano‐induced AGWs in mesopause and ionosphere‐thermosphere airglow imagery and Fabry‐Perot interferometry. We also report unique AGW signatures in the ionospheric D‐region, measured using Long‐Range Navigation pulsed low‐frequency transmitter signals. Although we observed fluctuations over a wide range of periods and speeds, we identify Lamb wave modes exhibiting 295–345 m s−1 phase front velocities with correlated spatial variability of their amplitudes from the Earth's surface to the ionosphere. Results suggest that the Lamb wave modes, tracked by our ray‐tracing modeling results, were accompanied by deep fluctuation fields coupled throughout the atmosphere, and were all largely consistent in arrival times with the sequence of eruptions over 8 hr. The ray results also highlight the importance of winds in reducing wave amplitudes at CONUS midlatitudes. The ability to identify and interpret Lamb wave modes and accompanying fluctuations on the basis of arrival times and speeds, despite complexity in their spectra and modulations by the inhomogeneous atmosphere, suggests opportunities for analysis and modeling to understand their signals to constrain features of hazardous events.

High-resolution grids of daily air temperature for Peru - the new PISCOt v1.2 dataset

Gridded high-resolution climate datasets are increasingly important for a wide range of modelling applications. Here we present PISCOt (v1.2), a novel high spatial resolution (0.01°) dataset of daily air temperature for entire Peru (1981–2020). The dataset development involves four main steps: (i) quality control; (ii) gap-filling; (iii) homogenisation of weather stations, and (iv) spatial interpolation using additional data, a revised calculation sequence and an enhanced version control. This improved methodological framework enables capturing complex spatial variability of maximum and minimum air temperature at a more accurate scale compared to other existing datasets (e.g. PISCOt v1.1, ERA5-Land, TerraClimate, CHIRTS). PISCOt performs well with mean absolute errors of 1.4 °C and 1.2 °C for maximum and minimum air temperature, respectively. For the first time, PISCOt v1.2 adequately captures complex climatology at high spatiotemporal resolution and therefore provides a substantial improvement for numerous applications at local-regional level. This is particularly useful in view of data scarcity and urgently needed model-based decision making for climate change, water balance and ecosystem assessment studies in Peru.

Antibiotic resistance patterns in soils across the Scottish landscape

The environment disseminates antimicrobial-resistance genes; however, it remains challenging to distinguish whether human activities exacerbate antimicrobial resistance or what is natural. Here, we quantified ~300 resistance-related genes in 200+ Scottish soil samples. Location or land use does not explain gene differences, but nutrient levels reduce gene richness. Elevated levels of metals increased gene richness, and selenium increased transposase levels. Rainfall and persistent organic pollutants also increased transposase relative abundance, possibly promoting conditions conducive to the horizontal transfer of antimicrobial-resistance genes. Selenium and polychlorinated biphenyls were primary factors in gene abundance, while polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and pH influenced gene diversity. Polychlorinated biphenyls are derived from anthropogenic activities, highlighting human activities’ potential impact on gene prevalence. This is the first national-scale, high spatial resolution dataset of antimicrobial-resistance genes in Scottish soils and provides a novel resource on which to build future studies.

A high spatial resolution dataset for methylmercury exposure in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

Dietary methylmercury (MeHg) exposure increases the risk of many human diseases. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is the world’s most populous bay area and people there might suffer a high risk of dietary MeHg exposure. However, there lacks a time-series high spatial resolution dataset for dietary MeHg exposure in the GBA. This study constructs a high spatial resolution (1 km × 1 km) dataset for dietary MeHg exposure in the GBA during 2009–2019. It first constructs the dietary MeHg exposure inventory for each county/district of the GBA, based on MeHg concentrations of foods (i.e., rice and fish in this study) and per capita rice and fish intake. Subsequently, this study spatializes the dietary MeHg exposure inventory at 1 km × 1 km scale, using gridded data for food consumption expenditure as the proxy. This dataset can describe the spatially explicit hotspots, distribution patterns, and variation trend of dietary MeHg exposure in the GBA. This dataset can support spatially explicit evaluation of MeHg-related health risks in the GBA.

Anomaly Segmentation for High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images Based on Pixel Descriptors

Anomaly segmentation in high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing imagery is aimed at segmenting anomaly patterns of the earth deviating from normal patterns, which plays an important role in various Earth vision applications. However, it is a challenging task due to the complex distribution and the irregular shapes of objects, and the lack of abnormal samples. To tackle these problems, an anomaly segmentation model based on pixel descriptors (ASD) is proposed for anomaly segmentation in HSR imagery. Specifically, deep one-class classification is introduced for anomaly segmentation in the feature space with discriminative pixel descriptors. The ASD model incorporates the data argument for generating virtual abnormal samples, which can force the pixel descriptors to be compact for normal data and meanwhile to be diverse to avoid the model collapse problems when only positive samples participated in the training. In addition, the ASD introduced a multi-level and multi-scale feature extraction strategy for learning the low-level and semantic information to make the pixel descriptors feature-rich. The proposed ASD model was validated using four HSR datasets and compared with the recent state-of-the-art models, showing its potential value in Earth vision applications.

A high spatial resolution dataset of China’s biomass resource potential

Assessing biomass resource potential is essential for China’s ambitious goals of carbon neutrality, rural revitalization, and poverty eradication. To fill the data gap of high spatial resolution biomass resources in China, this study estimates the biomass resource potential for all types of lignocellulosic biomass feedstock at 1 km resolution in 2018, including 9 types of agricultural residues, 11 types of forestry residues, and 5 types of energy crops. By combining the statistical accounting method and the GIS-based method, this study develops a transparent and comprehensive assessment framework, which is in accordance with the principle of food security, forest land and pasture protection, and biodiversity protection. In the end, we organize and store the data in different formats (GeoTIFF, NetCDF, and Excel) for GIS users, integrated modelers, and policymakers. The reliability of this high spatial resolution dataset has been proved by comparing the aggregated data at the subnational and national levels with the existing literature. This dataset has numerous potential uses and is a crucial input to many bioenergy-related studies.

DEVELOPING A THEORETICAL ASSESSMENT METHOD FOR AN ASSISTED DIRECT GEOREFERENCING APPROACH TO IMPROVE ACCURACY WHEN MAPPING OVER WATER: THE CONCEPT, POTENTIAL AND LIMITATIONS

Abstract. Drones offer a a unique survey platform that can operate below cloud cover and acquire very high spatial resolution datasets in near real-time. Studies have demonstrated that drones can be used for mapping over water using the Direct Georeferencing approach. However, this method is typically only feasible with high-end drones equipped with highly accurate GNSS/IMU systems. Moreover, placing targets over water to improve accuracy in post-processing can be challenging, further exacerbating this limitation. In this study, we developed an Assisted Direct Georeferencing method which combines the advantages of traditional Bundle Adjustment (BA) and Direct Georeferencing to overcome these challenges. Our approach utilizes BA over feature-rich segments of the drone trajectory, such as the shoreline, and DG in featureless areas, such as over water. To simulate a water-type environment or surface for our early tests, synthetic datasets have been created using Python for theoretical analysis. We then conducted a theoretical assessment of our approach under low and high variability attitude measurements. Our findings revealed that our methodology performs well under low variability attitude measurements, where wind conditions are close to optimal with an R-square value of 0.93. However, our model performs poorly under high variability attitude measurements, with an R-square value of only 0.028. These results suggest that Assisted Direct Georeferencing can serve as an alternative to high-end drones and Direct Georeferencing for water mapping applications in most standard. The findings from this theoretical assessment provide valuable insights into the achievable accuracy, error budgets, and limitations of the proposed model.

HiTIC-Monthly: a monthly high spatial resolution (1 km) human thermal index collection over China during 2003–2020

Abstract. Human-perceived thermal comfort (known as human-perceived temperature) measures the combined effects of multiple meteorological factors (e.g., temperature, humidity, and wind speed) and can be aggravated under the influences of global warming and local human activities. With the most rapid urbanization and the largest population, China is being severely threatened by aggravating human thermal stress. However, the variations of thermal stress in China at a fine scale have not been fully understood. This gap is mainly due to the lack of a high-resolution gridded dataset of human thermal indices. Here, we generated the first high spatial resolution (1 km) dataset of monthly human thermal index collection (HiTIC-Monthly) over China during 2003–2020. In this collection, 12 commonly used thermal indices were generated by the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) learning algorithm from multi-source data, including land surface temperature, topography, land cover, population density, and impervious surface fraction. Their accuracies were comprehensively assessed based on the observations at 2419 weather stations across the mainland of China. The results show that our dataset has desirable accuracies, with the mean R2, root mean square error, and mean absolute error of 0.996, 0.693 ∘C, and 0.512 ∘C, respectively, by averaging the 12 indices. Moreover, the data exhibit high agreements with the observations across spatial and temporal dimensions, demonstrating the broad applicability of our dataset. A comparison with two existing datasets also suggests that our high-resolution dataset can describe a more explicit spatial distribution of the thermal information, showing great potentials in fine-scale (e.g., intra-urban) studies. Further investigation reveals that nearly all thermal indices exhibit increasing trends in most parts of China during 2003–2020. The increase is especially significant in North China, Southwest China, the Tibetan Plateau, and parts of Northwest China, during spring and summer. Combining Deep Fully Convolutional Network and Graph Convolutional Neural Network for the Extraction of Buildings from Aerial Images

Deep learning technology, such as fully convolutional networks (FCNs), have shown competitive performance in the automatic extraction of buildings from high-resolution aerial images (HRAIs). However, there are problems of over-segmentation and internal cavity in traditional FCNs used for building extraction. To address these issues, this paper proposes a new building graph convolutional network (BGC-Net), which optimizes the segmentation results by introducing the graph convolutional network (GCN). The core of BGC-Net includes two major modules. One is an atrous attention pyramid (AAP) module, obtained by fusing the attention mechanism and atrous convolution, which improves the performance of the model in extracting multi-scale buildings through multi-scale feature fusion; the other is a dual graph convolutional (DGN) module, the build of which is based on GCN, which improves the segmentation accuracy of object edges by adding long-range contextual information. The performance of BGC-Net is tested on two high spatial resolution datasets (Wuhan University building dataset and a Chinese typical city building dataset) and compared with several state-of-the-art networks. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms several state-of-the-art approaches (FCN8s, DANet, SegNet, U-Net, ARC-Net, BAR-Net) in both visual interpretation and quantitative evaluations. The BGC-Net proposed in this paper has better results when extracting the completeness of buildings, including boundary segmentation accuracy, and shows great potential in high-precision remote sensing mapping applications.

Full-coverage 250 m monthly aerosol optical depth dataset (2000–2019) amended with environmental covariates by an ensemble machine learning model over arid and semi-arid areas, NW China

Abstract. Aerosols are complex compounds that greatly affect the global radiation balance and climate system and even human health; in addition, aerosols are currently a large source of uncertainty in the numerical simulation process. The arid and semi-arid areas have fragile ecosystems with abundant dust but lack related high-accuracy aerosol data. To solve these problems, we use the bagging trees ensemble model, based on 1 km aerosol optical depth (AOD) data and multiple environmental covariates, to produce a monthly advanced-performance, full-coverage, and high-resolution (250 m) AOD product (named FEC AOD, fusing environmental covariates AOD) covering the arid and semi-arid areas. Then, based on the FEC AOD products, we analyzed the spatiotemporal AOD pattern and further discussed the interpretation of environmental covariates to AOD. The results show that the bagging trees ensemble model has a good performance, with its verification R2 values always remaining at 0.90 and the R2 being 0.79 for FEC AOD compared with AERONET AOD product. The high-AOD areas are located in the Taklimakan Desert and on the Loess Plateau, and the low-AOD areas are concentrated in southern Qinghai province. The higher the AOD, the stronger the interannual variability. Interestingly, the AOD reflected a dramatic decrease on the Loess Plateau and an evident increase in the south-eastern Taklimakan Desert, while the southern Qinghai province AODs showed almost no significant change between 2000 and 2019. The annual variation characteristics show that the AOD was largest in spring (0.267±0.200) and smallest in autumn (0.147±0.089); the annual AOD variation pattern showed different features, with two peaks in March and August over Gansu province but only one peak in April in other provinces/autonomous regions. Farmlands and construction lands have high AOD levels compared to other land cover types. Meteorological factors demonstrate the maximum interpretation ability of the AODs on all set temporal scales, followed by the terrain factors, while surface properties have the smallest explanatory abilities; the corresponding average contributions are 77.1 %, 59.1 %, and 50.4 %, respectively. The capability of the environmental covariates to explain the AOD varies seasonally in the following sequence: winter (86.6 %) &gt; autumn (80.8 %) &gt; spring (79.9 %) &gt; summer (72.5 %). In this research, we provide a pathbreaking high spatial resolution (250 m) and long time series (2000–2019) FEC AOD dataset covering arid and semi-arid regions to support atmospheric and related studies in northwest China; the full dataset is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5727119 (Chen et al., 2021b).

Climate change’s impact on real estate prices in Chile

Climate change should deteriorate the value of real estate, but studies are lacking for developing economies which may suffer the worst weather changes. We match an administrative register of all the real estate properties’ transactions in Chile between 2002 and 2020 with a high spatial resolution dataset of local temperatures and precipitation. Even after controlling for a wide set of home characteristics or fixed-effects for each property, we find that fluctuations in temperatures had an impact on the prices of residential homes and agricultural properties.

A high spatial resolution dataset for anthropogenic atmospheric mercury emissions in China during 1998–2014

China is the largest atmospheric mercury (Hg) emitter globally, which has been substantially investigated. However, the estimation of national or regional Hg emissions in China is insufficient in supporting emission control, as the location of the sources may have significant impacts on the effects of Hg emissions. In this concern, high-spatial-resolution datasets of China’s Hg emissions are necessary for in-depth and accurate Hg-related studies and policymaking. Existing gridded datasets are constructed using population distribution as the proxy, which is limited as Hg emissions are closely related to energy consumption and economic processes. This study constructs a dataset of anthropogenic atmospheric Hg emissions in China gridded to a 1 km resolution during 1998–2014. This dataset is produced based on data of land uses, individual enterprises, roadmaps, and population, uncovering Hg emissions in agriculture, industries, services, and residents. This dataset can promote the reliability of Hg-related studies at a high spatial resolution. Moreover, this dataset can support spatially explicit Hg reduction of economic sectors.

Remote sensing of atmospheric HDO/H2O in southern California from CLARS-FTS

Atmospheric isotopologues of water vapor (e.g., HDO) are important tracers for understanding Earth's hydrological cycles. Most remote sensing and in-situ measurements of these isotopologues, however, are either column averaged values or sparse in space and time. Measurements targeting the planetary boundary layer (PBL), the part of the atmosphere that has high sensitivity to surface sources of water vapor isotopologues, are much rarer. In this study, we retrieved HDO and H2O columns from observations by the California Laboratory for Atmospheric Remote Sensing Fourier Transform Spectrometer (CLARS-FTS), a mountaintop observatory on Mt. Wilson (1.67 km a.s.l.) overlooking the Los Angeles (LA) basin in southern California. CLARS-FTS observations are highly sensitive to the lower atmosphere due to the long light path along the PBL. Retrievals were conducted using spectral windows between 6000 and 7000 cm−1 from CLARS-FTS observations (2011–2019). The isotopological abundance δD, which represents the relative difference of the HDO/H2O ratio to a standard abundance ratio, is also calculated. The averaged δD retrievals are (−156.1 ± 60.0)‰ with an uncertainty of (6.1 ± 10.2)‰ for LA Basin Survey mode and (−344.7 ± 95.0)‰ with an uncertainty of (42.4 ± 31.6)‰ for Spectralon Viewing Observation mode. In LA, the δD shows a seasonal cycle that is primarily driven by the change of atmospheric humidity. A comparison analysis shows that the δD measurements by CLARS-FTS, a collocated Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON), and the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) are in good agreement. The difference between CLARS and TCCON δD retrievals can primarily be attributed to the difference in their observation geometries. We envision that the HDO and δD measurements from CLARS-FTS provide high spatial and temporal resolution datasets for further study of hydrological processes, such as the partitioning of the water flux into soil evaporation and transpiration, standing water evaporation, or transport and mixing from the oceans, in the LA megacity.

Investigation of resolution and microphone size for measurements of airborne ultrasound.

The growth of ultrasound technologies has entailed the presence of airborne ultrasound emissions in industry and public and private spaces. For occupational safety and health, procedural and technical recommendations are needed that allow measurements to be performed in the field within a short time and with little effort. This study aims to answer two research questions concerning the minimum spatial resolution and microphone size required to determine a spatial distribution of sound pressure levels with sufficient accuracy within a given measurement uncertainty. The investigation focused on high spatial resolution datasets of the airborne ultrasound field of an ultrasonic welding machine acquired using a laboratory measuring system. Based on these datasets, datasets with lower resolutions were generated and measurements with microphones of different sizes were simulated. Subsequently, four different methods of parameterization were applied to the datasets to characterize the airborne ultrasound field with respect to the structure and sound pressure levels. Comparing the parameters of datasets with high precision (high resolution and small microphone size) to those of datasets with reduced precision (lower resolution and larger microphone size) allowed a quantitative assessment of the influence of the reduction in precision. Corresponding recommendations on resolution and microphone size are given.

High spatial resolution dataset of La Mobili\xe8re insurance customers

We present the La Mobilière insurance customers dataset: a 12-year-long longitudinal collection of data on policies of customers of the Swiss insurance company La Mobilière. To preserve the privacy of La Mobilière customers, we propose the data aggregated at two geographical levels, based on the place of residence of the customer: postal areas and municipalities. For each geographical area, the data provides summary statistics on: (i) the demographic characteristics of the customer base, (ii) characteristics of vehicles insurance policies and (iii) characteristics of housing and building insurance policies. To assess the validity of the data, we investigate the temporal consistency of the data and the representativeness of La Mobilière customer base along several dimensions (total population, percentage of foreigners, etc.). We also show how the insurance data can reliably model the spatial patterns of socio-economic indicators at a high geographical resolution. We believe that the reuse of this data provides an opportunity for researchers to broaden the socio-economic characterization of Swiss areas beyond the use of official data sources.

Satellite-based monitoring of meteorological drought over different regions of Iran: application of the CHIRPS precipitation product.

In the present study, the spatiotemporal evaluation of the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS) satellite precipitation product is performed in capturing meteorological drought over different climatic regions of Iran. The performance of the product as a high spatial resolution dataset in monitoring drought is evaluated against the 68 meteorological stations from short to long scale (i.e., SPI1, SPI3, SPI6, SPI9, and SPI12) in the period of 1987 to 2017. Besides, the capability of the CHIRPS in detecting drought events is assessed in different drought classes. The results suggest that the climate type, the time scale, and the drought class affect the quality of the CHIRPS performance. The CHIRPS offers the best performance in the detection of all drought events with SPI < - 1 over the SPI1 (0.69 < POD < 0.85). However, the product provides the worst performance for SPI12 (0.50 < POD < 0.70). At the country level, the highest agreement between the CHIRPS- and observation data-based SPI is found over the SPI6 (CC = 0.56), while the lowest is observed over the SPI12 (CC = 0.47). Based on the temporal evaluation, the G6 (0.18 < CC < 0.44, 1.06 < RMSE < 1.28) and G8 (0.17 < CC < 0.43, 1.06 < RMSE < 1.29) regions located in the southern coast of the Caspian Sea have an inadequate performance. However, the southern parts (G4 region) (0.38 < CC < 0.65, 0.83 < RMSE < 1.27) and the northwestern area (G3 region) (0.53 < CC < 0.62, 0.87 < RMSE < 0.97) of the country offer the best performance. The spatial evaluation describes the high accuracy (CC > 0.7, RMSE < 0.5) in some regions, including the western parts of G1, the northern area of G3, and the southern parts of G4. The research findings provided an important opportunity to advance the understanding of drought monitoring over the different climatic regions based on the high-resolution satellite precipitation products.
