UVB and UVA as eustressors in horticultural and agricultural crops

Abstract The production of high quality fruits, vegetables and ornamental crops while employing natural processes to maintain plant productivity, is an overarching goal of sustainable horticulture and agriculture. The nutritional quality of people’s diet is a key factor in the prevention of many chronic diseases, including obesity and heart disease. Traditionally viewed as detrimental to crops, recent evidence now shows that natural levels of ultraviolet radiation (UV; 280–400 nm) in sunlight can actually have a number of beneficial effects on the performance and nutritional quality of many fruits, vegetables and ornamental crops. UVB (280–315 nm) and UVA (315–400 nm) were shown to have effects on the growth, photosynthesis, secondary plant metabolites and the plant-insect interaction in important horticultural and agricultural crops. This review aims to summarize these effects. Compared to UVB, the number of studies on the effects of UVA is very limited mainly due to the experimental design that often does not allow studying the effect of UVA independent from the effect of UVB. Recently, LEDs offer the possibility to tailor the light spectrum which will open doors for the investigation of the effect of UVA and UVB and UVA/blue light photoreceptors. The production of flavonoids-a class of plant secondary metabolites that are known to have various health benefits, is well-known as a plants response to enhanced UVB radiation. Flavonoids serve multiple functions in plants (e.g. UV shielding or antioxidants) but species vary greatly in flavonoid profiles and responsiveness to UV. The contribution of other secondary plant metabolites is often neglected. However, these secondary plant metabolites affect plant quality such as aroma/smell, taste, color and compounds contribute to promote human health.

Recent Advances in the Regulation of Citric Acid Metabolism in Citrus Fruit

ABSTRACTThe regulation of citric acid metabolism during fruit ripening has a major impact on the production of high-quality fruit. The impact of citric acid on organoleptic fruit quality attributes, fruit storage performance and the synthesis of several secondary metabolites has led to an exponential increase in research efforts during the last two decades. Recent research has focused on the relationship among citric acid biosynthesis, transportation, storage, and utilization. Among citrate metabolic processes, activities of a proton pump, especially the plasma membrane H+-ATPase on tonoplast and citrate catabolism in cytosol play important roles in the regulation of citrate accumulation in cell vacuoles. Moreover, we highlight recent advances and provide an overview of citrate metabolism, postharvest physiology of citrate metabolism, and the influence of agro-climatic factors on citrus fruits. It is the first review that provides a comprehensive model for citrate metabolism in citrus fruit juice sacs. We anticipate that this model for the regulation of citrate metabolism will facilitate the study of fruit acidity in citrus and other nonclimacteric fruits.

Control and Management of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Integrated Production of Garden Strawberries (Fragaria×Ananassa Duchesne Ex Rozier)

AbstractArable soils are one of the most valuable natural resources and their long-term sustainable management is a determining factor in the integrated production of strawberries. It is well known that the current large-fruited garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier) cultivars are more susceptible to many species of plant-parasitic nematodes and other plant pathogens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of some cultural practices as potential methods for control of nematodes in the integrated production of strawberries. The investigation of the nematode populations was carried out in the region of western Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria (43°33'22.3"N 22°47'03.4"E), with cultivar ‘Maya’. In the surveyed area, plant protection products were applied under an approved scheme complying with the requirements for integrated fruit production (IOBC, IFP). Nematode populations were identified and classified to trophic level. The following genera of plant-parasitic nematodes were identified: Pratylenchus crenatus, P. neglectus, P. thornei, Tylenchorhynchus sp., and Paratylenchus spp. The density and species composition of plant parasitic nematodes were significantly reduced at the end of the study period comparing to the beginning of the study. From the results, it is clear that the integrated production can be defined as an economically feasible production of high quality fruits, giving priority to environmentally safe methods of pest control.

A year-round production strategy for the wax apple in Taiwan

Wax apple (Syzygium samarangense Merr. & Perry) has been a popular fruit crop in Taiwan because of its refreshing taste and attractive appearance. Pingtung County, accounting for 78% of the total planting area, is the major cultivation area. Regardless of the stable domestic and export market demand, the production area in Taiwan has decreased by almost 30% in the past decade, mainly due to labor shortage, high technical threshold, and production risk. Nevertheless, the cultivation area in central Taiwan has been increasing in recent years, especially in Nantou, Chiayi, and Yunlin Counties. The expansion of production regions facilitates year-round supply of wax apple fruits. By choosing suitable cultivars and forcing techniques in combination with adequate geographical and environmental conditions, a continuous supply chain for premium fruit has been established. Between October and December, market demand is fulfilled by fruits from Liukuei District in Kaohsiung City. Fruits from Pintung area satisfied the winter/spring market, from November to May. The cool temperatures in high altitude areas (600-1000 m a.s.l.) of Chiayi and Nantou favor the production of high quality fruits for niche markets from June to September. In addition, quality fruits of cultivars with consistent good fruit coloring and low cracking rates can be produced, from March to May, in Pingtung and, between June and September, in central Taiwan. Innovative production technologies and progressive breeding programs further ensure the sustainability of year-round wax apple production in Taiwan.

Multi-attribute analysis of orchard according to the integrated production concept

Integrated fruit production (IFP) is an economical, high-quality fruit production which prioritizes ecologically acceptable means of production, which minimize side-effects aiming to increase environment conservation and human health. Following the market demands and increasing production standards, integrated production imposes itself, which is to enable lucrativeness, market competition and ecological acceptability of agricultural products. Introducing and implementing multi-criteria model of decision-making is based on DEXi method (multi-attribute analysis). This method makes selection of the most adequate fruit sort for initiating fruit production. This model of decision-making is based on opinions of experts from the Feld of integrated production. The main criterion in evaluating IFP according to DEXi and expert system are: economic, technological, ecological and socio-political. The result of multi-criteria expert system DEXi have shown that the plum fruit sort yields the best results according to integrated production concept and can be recommended as the first planting alternative. The second alternative recommends apple while the third one recommends pear.

Determination of chlorophyll content in case of peach leaf curl disease (Taphrina deformans) with spectral analysis

One of the most important conditions of high quality fruit production is the early detection of hytopathologycal infections. The most dangerous disease of peach (Prunus persica) is the Taphrina deformans, which causes serious damages mainly in the years where the weather condition is cool and wet. In this study, healthy and naturally diseased leaves by peach leaf curl were investigated in the laboratory of University of Debrecen, CAAES, Institute of Water and Environmental Management. Both of hyperspectral measurement and the values of spectrophotometer shown the chlorophyll content of diseased leaves were lower than the healthy samples. Based on the experiments the water status of investigated leaves established the infected leaves contained more water in their tissues.

Current status and prospects of citrus genomics

Citrus is an economically important fruit tree with the largest amount of fruit production in the world. It provides important nutrition such as vitamin C and other health-promoting compounds including its unique flavonoids for human health. However, it is classified into the most difficult crops to develop new cultivars through conventional breeding approaches due to its long juvenility and some unique reproductive biological features such as gamete sterility, nucellar embryony, and high level of heterozygosity. Due to global warming and changes in consumer trends, establishing a systematic and efficient breeding programs is highly required for sustainable production of high quality fruits and diversification of cultivars. Recently, reference genome sequences of sweet orange and clementine mandarin have been released. Based on the reference whole-genome sequences, comparative genomics, reference-guided resequencing, and genotyping-by-sequencing for various citrus cultivars and crosses could be performed for the advance of functional genomics and development of traits-related molecular markers. In addition, a full understanding of gene function and gene co-expression networks can be provided through combined analysis of various transcriptome data. Analytic information on whole-genome and transcriptome will provide massive data on polymorphic molecular markers such as SNP, INDEL, and SSR, suggesting that it is possible to construct integrated maps and high-density genetic maps as well as physical maps. In the near future, integrated maps will be useful for map-based precise cloning of genes that are specific to citrus with major agronomic traits to facilitate rapid and efficient marker-assisted selection.

Fruit quality of ‘Eva’ e ‘Princesa’ apples grown under nitrogen fertigation in semiarid climate

ABSTRACTThe production of high quality fruits is a necessary factor for the adaptation and production of plant species with economic viability. Thus, an experiment was conducted from July 2012 to January 2013 to evaluate the fruit quality of the ‘Eva’ and ‘Princesa’ apple cultivars as a function of nitrogen fertilization in Petrolina, PE, Brazil. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with treatments distributed in a factorial arrangement 2 x 4, corresponding to apple cultivars (Eva and Princesa) and nitrogen doses (40; 80; 120 and 160 kg of N ha-1), with four replications and three plants in each plot. The fruit characteristics, such as fruit mass, skin color (luminosity, chromaticity, and colour angle), size (width and length), pulp firmness, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids (SS) and the SS/TA ratio, were recorded. Nitrogen doses do not affect fruit quality of studied apple cultivars. The fruit quality attributes are different between apple cultivars: fruit firmness, SS/TA ratio, fruit mass and fruit diameter are superior for Princesa cultivar, while the fruit length for Eva cultivar is superior.

Desarrollo histórico y los retos tecnológicos y legales para comercializar Fungifree AB®, el primer biofungicida 100% mexicano

More than a decade of Mexican researcher's work resulted in the commercialization of Fungifree AB®. The development of the project involved aspects ranging from basic science research to product registration before Mexican authorities. This development required that the scientist involved had a technological rather than academic approach, allowing the protection of the innovation by a patent and the creation of a spin-off company, which eventually put the biofungicide into the market.Fungifree AB® is the first biofungicide in the market fully developed in Mexico. It has been recognized by national and international organizations with innovation awards. Futhermore, organic certification was obtained on November 2014. The project involved collaborative work of several public and private institutions, bringing to the market an effective product for the safe production of high quality fruits and vegetables leaving no pesticides residues. This last property, allows the farmers the possibility to export their products to international markets in which the use of chemical pesticides is highly regulated.

DETERMINATION OF SELF-INCOMPATIBILITY STATUS OF SOME CLEMENTINE (CITRUS CLEMENTINA) GENOTYPES BY HISTOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

Clementine mandarins, is a very important fruit group due the production of high quality fruits that can be seedless as consequence to their sexual self-incompatibility. In this study, the self-compatible/incompatible status of 40 clementine mandarins provided by the Cukurova University collection was determined by histological analysis. For this purpose, self-pollinations were performed and pistil samples were taken 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 20 days after pollination. All samples were fixed in FPA70 solution and stored at 4°C. Pistil samples were stained with aniline blue and observed by fluorescence microscope following the staining and squashing. All pollen tubes of the genotypes arrested growth in the upper or middle part of style and none reached the base of the style. As a result, all the 40 clementine cultivars tested have been identified as self-incompatible.

Shoot Growth and Fruit Characteristics According to Bearing Branch Direction and Thickness in ‘Kawanakajima Hakuto’ Peach Trees

본 연구에서는 '천중도백도' 복숭아(Prunus persica)의 고품질 다수확 생산을 하는데 적합한 결과지를 구명하기 위하 여 몇 가지 결과지 방향 및 굵기 처리에 따른 신초장, 과중, 당도 등의 변화를 조사하였다. 각 조사항목의 평균치를 보면 결과지 직경의 경우 6.9mm, 신초장은 32.6cm, 과중은 333.6g, 당도는 <TEX>$11.2^{\circ}Brix$</TEX>였으며, 결과지 직경과 신초장은 변이계수가 각각 35.8%와 75.3%로 높았다. 254개 결과지 및 과실 특성 중 직경 9.0mm 이하 결과지가 76.4%, 40cm이하 신초가 70.0%, 무게가 310-340g 과실이 24.8%, 그리고 당도가 <TEX>$10.5-12.5^{\circ}Brix$</TEX>인 과실이 66.9%를 차지하였다. 신초장은 결과지 방향에 관계없이 결과지 굵기의 영향을 크게 받았고, 과중은 결과지 방향 및 굵기의 상호작용의 영향을 크게 받았다. 그리고 당도는 결과지 방향에 관계없이 결과지 굵기의 영향을 크게 받았다. 결과지 직경과 과중간 회귀 분석 결과 하향 결과지에서는 정의 상관(<TEX>$r^2=0.246^{**}$</TEX>)을 보였고 상향 결과지에서는 부의 상관(<TEX>$r^2=0.094^*$</TEX>)을 보였다. 따라서 고품질 '천중도백도' 과실 생산을 위해서는 하향이 면서 직경이 9.0mm 이하인 결과지를 활용하는 것이 좋을 것으로 판단된다. To investigate the optimal size of fruit bearing branches (FBBs) of 'Kawanakajima Hakuto' peach (Prunus persica Batsch) for production of high quality fruits, we evaluated shoot growth and fruit characteristics relative to FBB direction and thickness. FBB diameter, shoot length, fruit weight, and soluble solids content (SSC) averaged 6.9 mm, 32.6 cm, 333.6 g, and <TEX>$11.2^{\circ}Brix$</TEX>, respectively. Coefficients of variation of FBB diameter and shoot length were high as 35.8% and 75.3%. The highest frequency values revealed that 76.4% of FBBs had a diameter below 9.0 mm, 70.0% of shoot lengths were less than 40 cm, 24.8% of fruits were 310-340 g, and 66.9% of SSCs were <TEX>$10.5-12.5^{\circ}Brix$</TEX>. Shoot length and SSC were significantly affected by FBB diameter without direction, and fruit weight was significantly affected by interaction of FBB diameter and direction. There was a negative correlation (<TEX>$r^2=0.094^*$</TEX>) of FBB diameter and fruit weight with upward FBB directions, whereas FBB diameter and fruit weight were positively correlated (<TEX>$r^2=0.246^{**}$</TEX>) with downward FBB direction. With thick FBB diameter, shoot length, and SSC were significantly increased, but fruit weight was decreased. Therefore, downward FBBs below 9.0 mm in thickness are suitable for producing high-quality fruits of 'Kawanakajima Hakuto' peach.

Modelling the relationship between peel colour and the quality of fresh mango fruit using Random Forests

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is one of the major tropical fruits exported through long supply chains to export markets. Production of high quality fruits and monitoring postharvest changes during storage and transport are thus primary concerns for exporters to ensure the premium value of fresh mango fruit after distribution. This study aims to demonstrate the applicability of Random Forests (RF) for estimating the internal qualities of mango based on peel colour. Two cultivars, namely Nam Dokmai and Irwin, having different fruit properties and grown in intensively managed orchards in Thailand and Japan, respectively, were used in this study. Postharvest changes in peel colour and fruit quality were observed under three storage conditions with respect to temperature. RF models were applied to establish a relationship between peel colour and fruit quality, and then tested the applicability based on model accuracy and variable importance computed by the RF. Specifically, this work demonstrates how the variable importance can be used to interpret the model results. The high accuracy and the information retrieved by the RF models suggest the applicability and practicality as a non-destructive assessment method for the quality of fresh mango fruit.

Pre-harvest fruit bagging: a useful approach for plant protection and improved post-harvest fruit quality – a review

SummarySeveral good agricultural practices (GAP) are becoming popular throughout the World for the production of high quality fruit with less dependence on man-made chemicals. Among such practices, pre-harvest fruit bagging has emerged as an effective method. Bagging is a physical protection method which not only improves the visual quality of fruit by promoting skin colouration and reducing blemishes, but can also change the micro-environment for fruit development, which can have several beneficial effects on internal fruit quality. Pre-harvest bagging of fruit can also reduce the incidence of disease, insect pest and/or mechanical damage, sunburn of the skin, fruit cracking, agrochemical residues on the fruit, and bird damage. Due to its many beneficial effects, fruit bagging has become an integral part of peach, apple, pear, grape, and loquat cultivation in Japan, Australia, China and the USA. Moreover, countries such as Mexico, Chile, and Argentina do not import apples unless they are bagged. Several studies have been conducted to identify the desirable effects of pre-harvest fruit bagging on skin colour development and quality, but contradictory results have been reported. These may be due to differences in the type of bag used, the stage of fruit development when bagged, the duration of fruit exposure to natural light following bag removal, and/or fruit- and cultivar-specific responses. Bagging is laborious and its cost:benefit ratio must be investigated in order to promote adoption of the method in much of the World. The aim of this review is to improve our understanding of the beneficial effects of bagging in different fruit by collecting otherwise scattered information so that more growers could consider using this method on a commercial scale.

사과 '후지' 품종의 품질에 미치는 토양이화학성의 상대적 기여도

The management standard on soil conditions in 'Fuji' apple to produce high quality fruit were not yet made. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the optimum soil environmental conditions of ten contents on production of high quality fruit in 'Fuji' apple. The soil and fruit characteristics were analyzed at total 60 orchards in major apple producing areas such as Chungju, Moonkyeung, yeongju, andong, yeosan and yeongcheon (10 orchards an area). The soil environmental factors affected fruit weight was highest relative contribution in saturated hydraulic conductivity of 36.5%. The bulk density and soil pH were low as relative contribution. The fruit weight was influenced by soil physical properties more than soil chemical properties. The soil environmental factors affected sugar content were hydraulic conductivity of 28.3% and organic matter content of 18.2%. The cultivation layer depth and soil pH were low as relative contribution. The fruit coloring was highest relative contribution in saturated hydraulic conductivity 55.9%. while soil pH, cation and soil texture were low. Fruit coloring was high influenced over 70% by soil physical properties. Finally, relative contribution on fruit quality related with sugar content, fruit weight, and coloring were high influenced by saturated hydraulic conductivity of 21.% and organic matter content of 18.7% but bulk density and cultivation layer depth were low relative contribution. The fruit growth and saturated hydraulic conductivity in 'Fuji' apple were very closely related. Therefore, orchard soil management to produce high quality fruit was very importance drainage management and organic matter application. We concluded that scientific soil management is possible by qualifiable of soil management factors.

Situação e perspectivas da fruticultura de clima temperado no Brasil

A fruticultura está presente em todos os estados brasileiros e, como atividade econômica, envolve mais de cinco milhões de pessoas que trabalham de forma direta e indireta no setor. O Brasil é o terceiro maior produtor mundial de frutas, com colheita em torno de 40 milhões de toneladas ao ano, mas participa com apenas 2% do comércio global do setor, o que demonstra o forte consumo interno (ANUÁRIO BRASILEIRO DE FRUTICULTURA, 2010). A área plantada com plantas frutíferas no Brasil está distribuída em 1.034.708 ha com frutas tropicais, 928.552 ha com frutas subtropicais e 151.732 ha com espécies de clima temperado. Dentre as frutas de clima temperado, destaca-se a produção de uvas de mesa e viníferas (81.355 ha); maçãs (38.205 ha); pêssegos, ameixas e nectarinas (19.043 ha); caqui (8.638 ha); morango, amora, framboesa, mirtilo (3.560 ha); figo (2.886 ha); pera (1.394 ha) e marmelo (211 ha). Mesmo com uma área inferior em relação às espécies de clima tropical e subtropical, as frutas de clima temperado têm uma importância socioeconômica destacada em diversas regiões do Brasil, principalmente nos Estados do Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais e o Vale do São Francisco, seja como cultivo in natura, agroindústria e/ou agroturismo. Para que ocorra a produção de frutas de qualidade nas regiões de clima temperado no Brasil, é necessário o desenvolvimento de programas de melhoramento genético e/ou estudos de manejo e controles sobre a fisiologia das plantas para adaptá-las às condições de inverno ameno e com oscilação de temperaturas, muito frequentes nas principais regiões produtoras brasileiras. Os verões longos e excesso de precipitação ocasionam muitas doenças e pragas, obrigando muitas vezes ao excesso de tratamentos fitossanitários. O manejo dos pomares com a produção integrada de frutas está possibilitando a produção de qualidade e, ao mesmo tempo, reduzindo o impacto ambiental da atividade no setor. Os desafios estão relacionados à adaptação das espécies às mudanças climáticas, à necessidade de se reduzir o uso de agrotóxicos e insumos, aos manejo pré e pós-colheita realizados nas frutas, logística para atender aos diferentes mercados, controle de doenças e pragas e aos programas de melhoramento genético para atender às novas demandas de cada uma das espécies de clima temperado.

포도 '캠벨얼리' 품종의 과실품질과 기후요인과의 상관분석

포도 캠벨얼리 품종은 우리나라 포도재배면적의 70%이상을 차지하고 있는 대표 품종이다. 최근 기후변화에 따른 기온상승으로 과수 재배지의 변동에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기후요소와 과수품질간의 상관관계를 밝히기 위해 우리나라 주요 포도 주산단지 사천, 진주, 나주, 당진, 천안, 김천, 영동, 옥천, 상주, 수원, 영주, 강릉, 춘천 그리고 양구 등 13곳의 과원을 대상으로 조사하였다. 개화기는 사천이 5월 25일로 가장 빨랐으며 강원도 양구는 6월 7일로 가장 늦었다. 포도는 성숙일수가 90일 정도 되어야 상품성 있는 품질을 생산할 수 있다. 하지만 남쪽지방에서는 성숙일수가 90일 보다 작다. 강원도 지방은 성숙일수가 100일에서 110일로 가장 길다. 그래서 과실의 당도가 높게 나타난다. 포도 캠벨얼리의 과실 품질은 기상요인 특히 온도와 밀접한 관련이 있으며 온도가 높으면 산도가 높다. 과피두께는 남부지방 과실의 과피가 얇고 북쪽으로 갈수록 과피가 두꺼워지는 경향을 나타냈으며, 과실의 착색에서 남부지방은 수확적기가 지났음에도 착색이 불량하며 북쪽지방은 아직 적숙기가 되지 않았다. The study was conducted to investigate the correlation analysis between fruit quality and climatic parameters in grapevines. 'Campbell Early', one of the major grape cultivars, occupies more than 70% of cultivated areas in Korea. Recent research results have shown that the movement of cultivation area of fruit production resulted from the temperature increase. In this study, we investigated the relationship between fruit quality and climatic conditions in 13 major 'Campbell Early' grape producing areas (i.e., Sacheon, Jinju, Naju, Dangjin, Cheonan, Gimcheon, Yeongdong, Okcheon, Sangju, Suwon, Yeongju, Gangneung, Chuncheon, and Yanggu). The earliest and latest full blooming days of grapevines were ovserved on May 25 in Sacheon area and on June 7 in Yanggu area, respectively. At least 90 days are required for grapes to mature enough for the production of highquality fruits. The southern areas with less than 90 days of maturity period had difficulty in the production of good fruit. However, the areas with longer maturity period of 100 to 110 days produced grapes with with high sugar content and good coloring. The fruit qualities of 'Campbell Early' grapes are more closely related with temperature than other climatic factors. High temperature resulted in fruits with high acidity and delayed the coloration of the fruit skin in the southern area. The fruit skin was thin in the southern area and inclined to be thicker in the northern areas. Therefore, grape should be cultivated in regions with long maturity period to have high quality.

‘Jeanne d'Orléans’ Red Raspberry

‘Jeanne d’Orleans’ is a new late-season, floricane-fruiting red raspberry cultivar (Rubus idaeus L.) released by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Horticulture Research and Development Center. Results from replicated trials in L’Acadie show ‘Jeanne d’Orleans’ has larger and firmer fruits (Fig. 1) that have an excellent shelf life and higher soluble solids compared with the commercial cultivars in this study. ‘Jeanne d’Orleans’ also has higher antioxidants than commercially grown raspberries in Quebec (EhsaniMoghaddam and Sullivan, 2008; Khanizadeh et al., 2009). The selection was named after Mrs. Jeanne Delisle, a pioneer of small fruit cultivation and development with Les Fraises de l’lle d’Orleans Inc. lle d’Orleans is an island located 20 km east of Quebec City known for the production of high-quality small fruits, including red raspberry. Its economy is based mainly on agricultural production, particularly vegetable crops and small fruit crops.
