Front-End Design for SiPM-Based Monolithic Neutron Double Scatter Imagers.

Neutron double scatter imaging exploits the kinematics of neutron elastic scattering to enable emission imaging of neutron sources. Due to the relatively low coincidence detection efficiency of fast neutrons in organic scintillator arrays, imaging efficiency for double scatter cameras can also be low. One method to realize significant gains in neutron coincidence detection efficiency is to develop neutron double scatter detectors which employ monolithic blocks of organic scintillator, instrumented with photosensor arrays on multiple faces to enable 3D position and multi-interaction time pickoff. Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have several advantageous characteristics for this approach, including high photon detection efficiency (PDE), good single photon time resolution (SPTR), high gain that translates to single photon counting capabilities, and ability to be tiled into large arrays with high packing fraction and photosensitive area fill factor. However, they also have a tradeoff in high uncorrelated and correlated noise rates (dark counts from thermionic emissions and optical photon crosstalk generated during avalanche) which may complicate event positioning algorithms. We have evaluated the noise characteristics and SPTR of Hamamatsu S13360-6075 SiPMs with low noise, fast electronic readout for integration into a monolithic neutron scatter camera prototype. The sensors and electronic readout were implemented in a small-scale prototype detector in order to estimate expected noise performance for a monolithic neutron scatter camera and perform proof-of-concept measurements for scintillation photon counting and three-dimensional event positioning.

Development of a liquid argon detector with high light collection efficiency using tetraphenyl butadiene and a silicon photomultiplier array

Abstract To increase the light collection efficiency of a liquid argon (LAr) detector, we optimized the evaporation technique of tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) on the detector surface and tested the operability of a silicon photomultiplier at LAr temperature. TPB converts LAr scintillations (vacuum ultraviolet light) to visible light, which can be detected using high-sensitivity photosensors. Because the light collection efficiency depends on the deposition mass of TPB on the inner surface of the detector, we constructed a well-controlled TPB evaporator to ensure reproducibility and measured the TPB deposition mass using a quartz crystal microbalance sensor. After optimizing the deposition mass of TPB (30 $\rm \mu g/cm^2$ on the photosensor window and 42 $\rm \mu g/cm^2$ on the detector wall), the observed light yield was 12.8 ± 0.3 p.e./keVee using photomultiplier tubes with a quantum efficiency of approximately 30% for TPB-converted light. We also tested the low-temperature tolerance of the silicon photomultiplier, which has a high photon detection efficiency, in a LAr environment. It detected the LAr scintillations converted by TPB with a photon detection efficiency exceeding 50%.

Low-Noise InGaAs/InP Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes for Fiber-Based and Free-Space Applications

We present the design and the experimental characterization of a new InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), with two different diameters: i) a 10 μm device, suitable for optical fiber-based quantum applications; ii) a 25 μm one, more appropriate for free-space applications. Compared to a previous generation, we improved the design of the double zinc diffusion and optimized the layer structure. We achieved low dark count rate, around 1 kcps and 4 kcps at 225 K and 5 V excess bias for 10 μm and 25 μm devices, respectively, and down to few tens of counts per seconds at 175 K for the 10 μm detector. At 5 V excess bias and 225 K temperature, both devices also show a high photon detection efficiency (33% at 1064 nm, 31% at 1310 nm and 25% at 1550 nm for the 10 μm SPAD). Afterpulsing has been measured with a custom readout integrated circuit, achieving very low probability values. Timing jitter is comparable to previous-generation devices.

NEXO light detection system

nEXO is a future 5-tonne scale liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC) experiment looking for hypothetical neutrinoless double beta decay of isotope 136Xe. To attain the projected half-life sensitivity of 1028 years, it aims to achieve an energy resolution of 1% or better at the Q-value (Qββ = 2.458 MeV) of the decay. nEXO plans to employ silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) on the lateral surface of the cylindrical TPC to detect the light signals. Newly developed SiPMs sensitive to vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light will be directly used for the detection of scintillation photons (λ = 175nm) in liquid xenon. For achieving the target energy resolution, the light detection system must have high photon detection efficiency, low correlated avalanche noise and low dark noise rate. The SiPM devices from two vendors are considered for the light detection system in the experiment. The primary goal of this research project is to characterize the VUV-SiPMs and measure their various features like gain, crosstalk, afterpulsing, dark noise rate, reflectivity and photon detection efficiency. Along with all these measurements, a monitoring tool will be required to test the large number of SiPMs before installing them in the detector. Current-voltage(IV) curve characterisation is being explored as a quick quality-testing tool for the performance of SiPM.

Coded masks for imaging of neutrino events

The capture of scintillation light emitted by liquid Argon and Xenon under molecular excitations by charged particles is still a challenging task. Here we present a first attempt to design a device able to have a sufficiently high photon detection efficiency, in order to reconstruct the path of ionizing particles. The study is based on the use of masks to encode the light signal combined with single-photon detectors, showing the capability to detect tracks over focal distances of about tens of centimeters. From numerical simulations it emerges that it is possible to successfully decode and recognize signals, even of rather complex topology, with a relatively limited number of acquisition channels. Thus, the main aim is to elucidate a proof of principle of a technology developed in very different contexts, but which has potential applications in liquid argon detectors that require a fast reading. The findings support us to think that such innovative technique could be very fruitful in a new generation of detectors devoted to neutrino physics.

Digital PET and detection of recurrent prostate cancer: what have we gained, and what is still missing?

ABSTRACT Defined by the TIME magazine ‘medical invention of the year 2000,’ positron emission computed tomography (PET/CT) has experienced impressive improvements in technology and clinical applications over time. In recent years, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) detectors, characterized by excellent intrinsic time resolution and high photon-detection efficiency, have been introduced as an alternative to the classic photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), thus moving the field of PET technology forward and leading to the so-called digital PET/CT (dPET/CT). On the other side, the radiopharmaceutical 68Ga-PSMA-11, approved by the Food and Drug Administration in December 2020, proved to strongly impact prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis and management. In the study under evaluation, Alberts et al. retrospectively compared the performance of dPET/CT and PMTs-based PET/CT, namely analogue PET/CT (aPET/CT), in two cohorts, each one including 65 patients undergoing PET/CT with 68Ga-PSMA-11 for suspected recurrent PCa. The authors found that dPET/CT presented a higher detection rate of pathological lesions with respect to aPET/CT. Of note, dPET/CT’s higher sensitivity results are associated with an increased true-positive rate and high inter-reader agreement. This report underscores how innovative PET/CT instrumentation, by utilizing novel radiopharmaceuticals targeting specific metabolic/molecular signatures expressed by PCa, may represent a successful weapon in uro-oncology.

A roadmap for sole Cherenkov radiators with SiPMs in TOF-PET

Time of flight positron emission tomography can strongly benefit from a very accurate time estimator given by Cherenkov radiation, which is produced upon a 511 keV positron–electron annihilation gamma interaction in heavy inorganic scintillators. While time resolution in the order of 30 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) has been reported using MCP-PMTs and black painted Cherenkov radiators, such solutions have several disadvantages, like high cost and low detection efficiency of nowadays available MCP-PMTs. On the other hand, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are not limited by those obstacles and provide high photon detection efficiency with a decent time response. Timing performance of PbF2 crystals of various lengths and surface conditions coupled to SiPMs was evaluated against a reference detector with an optimized test setup using high-frequency readout and novel time walk correction, with special attention on the intrinsic limits for one detected Cherenkov photon only. The average number of detected Cherenkov photons largely depends on the crystal surface state, resulting in a tradeoff between low photon time spread, thus good timing performance, and sensitivity. An intrinsic Cherenkov photon yield of 16.5 ± 3.3 was calculated for 2 × 2 × 3 mm3 sized PbF2 crystals upon 511 keV γ-deposition. After time walk correction based on the slew rate of the signal, assuming two identical detector arms in coincidence, and using all events, a time resolution of 215 ps FWHM (142 ps FWHM) was obtained for 2 × 2 × 20 mm3 (2 × 2 × 3 mm3) sized PbF2 crystals, compared to 261 ps (190 ps) without correction. Selecting on one detected photon only, a single photon coincidence time resolution of 113 ps FWHM for black painted and 166 ps for Teflon wrapped crystals was measured for 3 mm length, compared to 145 ps (black) and 263 ps (Teflon) for 20 mm length.

Single-photon detection for MIMO underwater wireless optical communication enabled by arrayed LEDs and SiPMs.

Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a promising technology that can be a candidate to improve the communication capacity and speed in aquatic media. The aim of this study is to examine the performance of a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array-based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) UWOC system. A SiPM is a modern solid-state photodetector with extremely high sensitivity up to the single-photon level or a photon-counting ability, which helps in detecting extremely weak light signals after long-distance underwater channel attenuation. We clarify the basic characteristics and photon-counting detection mode of a SiPM. In particular, the photocount of a SiPM is approximated by a Gaussian distribution, and theoretical analysis shows that only 13.3 photons need to be detected during "1" symbol period to achieve a bit error rate of 10-3 in an ambient light environment. Moreover, a SiPM also has a better analog mode detection ability than an avalanche photodiode (APD) and realizes 2 Mbps analog communication owing to its unique array structure and high photon detection efficiency. Furthermore, MIMO, i.e., spatial diversity, is applied as an effective method to relax the link alignment, improve the system performance, and alleviate the effect of optical turbulence. In our experiment, with a photon-counting 6×3 MIMO scheme, an energy per bit of 7.38×10-9 J/bit is achieved at a scintillation index of 4.66×10-3 in a 10 m water tank with 1 Mbps on-off-keying (OOK) modulation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on a MIMO-UWOC system based on the photon-counting mode of a SiPM array. This UWOC system combines the advantages of SiPMs and the MIMO scheme and has the potential to realize long-distance UWOC under optical turbulence.

Characterization of VUV4 SiPM for liquid argon detector

Particle detectors based on liquid argon are now recognised as an attractive technology for dark matter direct detection and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering measurement. A program using a dual-phase liquid argon detector with a fiducial mass of 200 kg to detect coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at Taishan Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed. SiPMs will be used as the photon sensor because of their high radio-purity and high photon detection efficiency. S13370-6050CN SiPM, made by Hamamatsu, is a candidate for the detector. In this paper, the characterisation of S13370-6050CN SiPM, including the cross talk and after pulse probabilities at liquid argon temperature and the temperature dependence of breakdown voltage, dark counting rate and relative quantum efficiency were presented.

Gamma-ray spectroscopy with MAPD array in the readout of LaBr3:Ce scintillator

This paper presented a new detector module consisting of a micropixel avalanche photodiode (MAPD-3NM), LaBr3:Ce scintillator, and a compact read-out interface system for detecting gamma-rays in a wide energy range. The MAPD array (4 × 4 channels) was assembled using a single MAPD-3NM characterized by its high photon detection efficiency (∼25%), pixel density (10 000 pixels/mm2), low operation voltage (74.5 V), and low dark current. An active area of a single MAPD-3NM was 3.7 × 3.7 mm2, while this value was 17 × 17 mm2 for the assembled array with pixel density of 2190 000. The size of the tested LaBr3:Ce scintillator was 15 × 15 × 15 mm3. According to the characteristics of the detector module, a compact read-out interface device (SPECTRIG MAPD) was developed. SPECTRIG MAPD was designed as a miniature device with low power consumption, which continues to provide a wide spectrum of functions needed for measurement and test silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) and scintillation detectors on their basis. The various experiments were implemented to test the detection performance of a detector module to gamma radiation in the range from 30 keV to 4400 keV.

A Near-Infrared Enhanced Silicon Single-Photon Avalanche Diode With a Spherically Uniform Electric Field Peak

A near-infrared (NIR) enhanced silicon single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) fabricated in a customized <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$0.13~\mu \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> CMOS technology is presented. The SPAD has a depleted absorption volume of approximately <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$15\,\,\mu \text{m}\,\,\times 15\,\,\mu \text{m}\,\,\times 18\,\,\mu \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> . Electrons generated in the absorption region are efficiently transported by drift to a central active avalanche region with a diameter of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$2~\mu \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> . At the operating voltage, the active region contains a spherically uniform field peak, enabling the multiplication of electrons originating from all corners of the device. The advantages of the SPAD architecture include high NIR photon detection efficiency (PDE), drift-based transport, low afterpulsing, and compatibility with an integrated CMOS readout. A front-side illuminated device is fabricated and characterized. The SPAD has a PDE of 13% at wavelength 905 nm, an afterpulsing probability < 0.1% for a dead time of 13 ns, and a median dark count rate (DCR) of 840 Hz at room temperature. The device shows promising performance for time-of-flight applications that benefit from uniform NIR-sensitive SPAD arrays.

Design, Fabrication, and Verification of Blue-Extended Single-Photon Avalanche Diode with Low Dark Count Rate and High Photon Detection Efficiency

Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) can detect extremely weak optical signals and are mostly used in single-photon imaging, quantum communication, medical detection, and other fields. In this paper, a low dark count rate (DCR) single-photon avalanche diode device is designed based on the 180 nm standard BCD process. The device has a good response in the 450~750 nm spectral range. The active area of the device adopts a P+/N-Well structure with a diameter of 20 µm. The low-doped N-Well increases the thickness of the depletion region and can effectively improve the detection sensitivity; the P-Well acts as a guard ring to prevent premature breakdown of the PN junction edge; the isolation effect of the deep N-Well reduces the noise coupling of the substrate. Use the TCAD simulation tool to verify the SPAD’s basic principles. The experimental test results show that the avalanche breakdown voltage of the device is 11.7 V. The dark count rate is only 123 Hz when the over-bias voltage is 1 V, and the peak photon detection efficiency (PDE) reaches 37.5% at the wavelength of 500 nm under the 0.5 V over-bias voltage. PDE exceeds 30% in the range of 460~640 nm spectral range, which has a good response in the blue band. The SPAD device provides certain design ideas for the research of fluorescence detectors.

Room temperature quantum key distribution characteristics of low-noise InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diode

InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) with small active diameter and backside microlens was fabricated and its dark count and after-pulse noises were characterized. In addition, by optimizing multiplication layer and reducing the active diameter, high photon detection efficiency (PDE) was achieved as well as suppressed dark count probability (DCP) and after-pulse probability (APP) near room temperature. The gated Geiger-mode characteristics of SPAD were investigated with the gate amplitude of 6.6 V and repetition frequency of 10 MHz. Superior single-photon detection characteristics as PDE of 20.9%, DCP of 1.02 × 10–5 and APP of 0.8% were observed at the operation temperature of + 20 °C. It is a promising result that allows compact and low-cost detector module for quantum key distribution system with simple cooling apparatus.

Theoretical Prediction of High-Performance Room-Temperature InGaAs/Si Single-Photon Avalanche Diode Fabricated by Semiconductor Interlayer Bonding

Single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) is an ultrasensitive device for the detection of weak signals. Epitaxial InP-based devices exhibit poor avalanche characteristics and poor compatibility with Si complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) circuit, and epitaxial Si-based devices show high dark count rate (DCR) and limited detection wavelength. Here we first show a new generation of InGaAs-on-Si SPADs, achieved by semiconductor interlayer bonding, for the detection of 1550-nm infrared signals theoretically. This wafer-bonded InGaAs/Si SPAD has enabled a significant step-change in performance. The dark current of this SPAD is four orders of magnitude lower than that of the epitaxial ones (300 K). High gain-bandwidth-product of 254 and 353 GHz is achieved at the gain of ~ 24 and ~ 36, respectively, for the wafer-bonded SPAD with polycrystalline Si bonding layer at InGaAs/Si bonded interface. In comparison with epitaxial SPADs, the wafer-bonded ones exhibit low DCR ( ~ 10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">5</sup> Hz at 10% V <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">br</sub> ), high single photon detection efficiency ( ~ 24% at 10% V <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">br</sub> ), and high pulse repetition rate (1 GHz at 5% V <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">br</sub> ) at 300 K. These results indicate that utilizing the wafer-bonded platform, the route toward high-performance InGaAs-on-Si SPAD arrays for use in future eye-safe laser radar (LIDAR) and quantum communication at room temperature (RT) is expected to be achieved.

Research on the Metasurface for Single-Photon Avalanche Photodiode

As the core device of quantum information field, single photon avalanche photodiode (SPAD) is a solid-state single photon detector with pico-second level time-resolution, low bias voltage, high signal-to-noise ratio and low cost. However, the photon detection efficiency (PDE) of SPAD is not ideal. Traditional method is to optimize the device structure, and the dark count or time resolution characteristics of the device might be sacrificed. The metasurface integrated on SPADs provides a novel approach to achieve higher PDE. As a result, the SPAD device structure could be independently designed to realize low dark count rate and good time resolution. In this paper, many kinds of metasurface structures that could enhance the incident photons absorption, are analyzed. Those structures compatible with CMOS or other easy to mass produce processes are attractive to be adopted to make revolutionary changes to conventional SPAD. As a results, the metasurface integrated SPAD would strongly push its applications in the quantum information, single photons imaging, life medicine, and other low level light detections.

Exploiting Cross-Luminescence in BaF2 for Ultrafast Timing Applications Using Deep-Ultraviolet Sensitive HPK Silicon Photomultipliers

Time resolution of scintillation-based detectors is becoming continuously more important. In medical applications, especially in positron emission tomography (PET), better time of flight (TOF) information of the emitted gammas leads to a higher signal-to-noise ratio in the reconstructed image. Benefits are lower doses applied to and/or shorter scanning times for the patient. In high energy physics (HEP) ultrafast timing becomes increasingly important for reducing pile up effects in future high luminosity colliders and therefore increasing the detector sensitivity in the search for rare events and new physics. This article is an initial study on exploiting the fast cross-luminescence emission in the inorganic BaF2 scintillator with deep ultraviolet-sensitive silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) from Hamamatsu for precise timing in PET and HEP. Using BaF2 read out by these photodetectors with a photon detection efficiency (PDE) of only about 15% in the desired 200nm emission region, a time resolution of 94±5ps FWHM is achieved when coupling with air. This figure improves to 78$±4ps FWHM when coupling the BaF2 crystal with UV transparent optical grease, Viscasil, to the photodetector. This CTR performance obtained with BaF2 is already better than that measured with LYSO:Ce, a commonly used state-of-the-art inorganic scintillator in PET, when coupled to another Hamamatsu photodetector (S13360) and coupled with Meltmount. Assuming that one could increase the PDE in the ultraviolet to values of 60% obtained today at 420nm, the emission wavelength of LYSO, one could ultimately achieve CTRs below 40ps FWHM. Further improvements in CTR beyond these values could be envisaged if also the single photon time resolution (SPTR) of the ultraviolet sensitive SiPM could be enhanced. Studying the emission of BaF2 more in detail, a very fast decay component of less than 100ps has recently been observed, being of high interest in the domain of ultrafast timing. Hence, in depth investigation of this decay component would give an additional handle to improve time resolution. In view of the prospects in advancing technologies for ultraviolet sensitive SiPMs, with high PDE and SPTR, and further advancements in producing high quality BaF2, one could imagine the development of sub-30ps FWHM TOF-PET systems.

Photoresponse above 85 K of selective epitaxy grown high-Tc superconducting microwires

Superconducting single-photon detectors have become a very promising infrared photon counting technology. Utilizing high-Tc superconductors to implement photon counters is significantly more practical due to their much higher operating temperatures. We report photoresponse above 85 K of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) microwires fabricated using selective epitaxial growth (SEG), demonstrating their high photon detection efficiency. SEG does not require post-deposition treatment of the YBCO layer, thus avoiding material damage and degradation, typically occurring in conventional submicrometer YBCO device fabrication. Our results show excellent superconducting performance with a Tc of up to 89 K and a sharp transition width of ΔT∼2 K, as well as a relatively high critical current density Jc of ∼5.7×105 A/cm2 at 77 K. The optical response of our YBCO microwires, especially the high responsivity of ∼3×103 mV/(nW/um2), paves the way for infrared single-photon detection using high-Tc superconductors.

Tested Performance of JUNO 20” PMTs

The physics goal of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is mainly to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy by precisely measuring the oscillation spectrum with energy resolution.Totally, about 20, 000 large area 20” tubes with high photon detection efficiency will be used to achieve this requirement, including 5,000 Hamamatsu dynode PMTs and 15,000 NNVT MCP PMTs. The JUNO collaboration has built two systems to check the performances of these tubes, which have been running since July 2017 and about 14000 tubes have been tested, so far. The key parameters compared with vendor data, including operating voltage, photon detection efficiency, dark count rate, rise time, fall time are presented. The selected PMTs meet all the requirements of the JUNO detector.

Scintillation readout with MAPD array for gamma spectrometer

In this study, we present the gamma-ray detection performance of LYSO, YSO(Ce) and BGO scintillators read out by a 9 ch. micropixel avalanche photodiode (MAPD) array with a high pixel density (PD) and photon detection efficiency (PDE). The array with an active area of 11.5 × 11.5 mm2 was assembled using single MAPDs with an active area of 3.7 × 3.7 mm2. It had a single output signal and was developed for gamma spectroscopy. Breakdown voltage measurements were carried out for each channel, as a result of which the optimal operating voltage for the array was found. The linearity range and energy resolution for each crystal were determined in the energy range from 30 to 1770 keV . The high pixel density of the array allowed to achieve good linearity in the studied energy range.

Optical simulation study on the spatial resolution of a thick monolithic PET detector

The intrinsic spatial resolution of clinical positron emission tomography (PET) detectors is ~3–4 mm. A further improvement of the resolution using pixelated detectors will not only result in a prohibitive cost, but is also inevitably accompanied by a strong degradation of important performance parameters like timing, energy resolution and sensitivity. Therefore, it is likely that future generation high resolution PET detectors will be based on continuous monolithic scintillation detectors. Monolithic detectors have attractive properties to reach superior 3D spatial resolution while outperforming pixelated detectors in timing, energy resolution and sensitivity.In this work, optical simulations including an advanced surface reflection model, allow us to investigate the influence of three parameters on the spatial resolution: silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) pixel size, photon detection efficiency (PDE) and the number of channels used to read out the SiPM array. A lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) crystal with dimensions 50 × 50 × 16 mm3 coupled to an SiPM array is calibrated and a nearest neighbor (NN) algorithm is used to position events. Findings show that the tested parameters affect the spatial resolution resulting in 0.40–0.66 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM). Best resolution could be obtained with smaller SiPM pixels, higher PDE, and an individual channel readout. However, it was shown that combining channels by adding their signals can significantly reduce the amount of readout channels while having small or no significant impact on the resolution. The mean depth of interaction (DOI) estimation error is 1.6 mm. This study demonstrates the ultimate spatial resolution that can be obtained with this detector without being constrained by practical limitations of experimental setups. In the future these optical simulations may be used as a more precise and fast method to obtain calibration data for real monolithic detectors.
