Capacity Augmentation Strategy in α-Fe2O3 Nanoparticles Through Multifaceted Structural and Electrochemical Analyses

Hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) has garnered significant research interest for supercapacitor applications, but capacity fading and limited cyclic life remain serious challenges. In this context, the present research provides a comprehensive study of the factors that significantly impact charge kinetics within the electrode and at the solid/electrolyte interface. By integrating structural and electrochemical analyses, this study offers an effective strategy to enhance the capacity of α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles through rigorous scientific analysis and identification of various qualitative and quantitative factors that influence charge storage capacity. A simple one-step co-precipitation method was adopted to synthesize porous α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles. The quantitative analysis of charge kinetics demonstrated the domination of diffusion-controlled charge storage as the main contributor to the total charge storage. The α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles-based electrode delivered a high energy density of 24.6 Wh kg⁻1 at an impressive power density of 478.7 W kg⁻1. Additionally, it displayed a capacity retention of 79% over 10,000 cycle operations. The choice of electrode material and the superior porous nanoarchitecture have proven to be advantageous for high-performance supercapacitor applications, offering fast electron/ion transport.

MOF-on-MOF Derived Co2P/Ni2P Heterostructures for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as versatile precursors to fabricate functional nanomaterials with well-defined structures for various applications. Herein, the presynthesized Ni-MOF nanosheets were grown on a Ni foam (NF) substrate, which then guided the nucleation and further growth of Prussian blue analogues (PBA) nanocubes to form MOF-on-MOF of the PBA/Ni-MOF film. This film was subsequently converted into a Co2P/Ni2P heterostructure. The NF-supported Co2P/Ni2P composites exhibited excellent supercapacitor performance, delivering a high specific capacity of 5124.2 mF cm-2 at 1 mA cm-2 and a remarkable capacity retention of 80.69% after 3000 cycles at 10 mA cm-2. An asymmetric supercapacitor assembled using Co2P/Ni2P/NF as the cathode and activated carbon as the anode yielded a maximum energy density of 0.34 mWh cm-2 at a power density of 1.50 mW cm-2. The enhanced supercapacitor performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of the Ni2P and Co2P components with multiple valence states as well as the unique hierarchical structure, which provides efficient pathways for electron and ion transport while mitigating volume expansion during energy storage. This synthetic strategy demonstrates an effective approach to fabricate phosphide-based hybrid materials for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Surface-modified composites of metal–organic framework and wood-derived carbon for high-performance supercapacitors

The renewable nature, high carbon content, and unique hierarchical structure of wood-derived carbon make it an optimal self-supporting electrode for energy storage. However, the limitations in specific surface area and electrical conductivity defects pose challenges to achieving satisfactory charge storage in wood-derived carbon electrodes. Therefore, exploring diverse and effective surface strategies is crucial for enhancing the electrochemical energy storage performance. Herein, a decoration technique for enhancing aesthetic appeal involves applying a metal–organic framework (Ni/Co-MOF) containing nickel and cobalt onto the inner walls of wood tracheids. The sequential modification steps include carbonization, oxidation activation, and acid-etching. The Ni/NiO/CoO-CW-4 electrode, made by acid-etching carbonized wood (CW) doped with nickel, nickel oxide, and cobalt oxide for 4 h, has excellent surface area and pore size distribution, high graphitization degree, and exceptional conductivity. Furthermore, surface modification optimizes the surface chemistry and phase composition, resulting in a 0.8 mm thick Ni/NiO/CoO-CW-4 electrode with an exceptionally high areal capacitance of 16.76 F cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2. Meanwhile, the fabricated solid-state supercapacitor achieves an impressive energy density of 0.67 mWh cm−2 (8.38 mWh cm−3) at 2.5 mW cm−2 (31.25 mW cm−3), surpassing representative modified wood-based carbon electrodes by approximately 2–7 times. Additionally, the supercapacitor demonstrates exceptional stability, maintaining 96.21 % of capacitance even over 10,000 cycles. The parameters presented here demonstrate a significant improvement compared to those typically observed in most modified wood-derived carbon-based supercapacitors, effectively addressing common issues of low energy density and suboptimal cycling performance with wood carbon composites.

MnCo2O4 nanospheres entrapped in g-C3N4 network for High-Performance supercapacitor applications

MnCo2O4 nanospheres were embedded in a g-C3N4 network using the solvothermal method with ethylene glycol as the solvent. SEM confirmed the uniformity of the MnCo2O4/g-C3N4 nanospheres, while XRD and XPS were used for structural and elemental analysis, including metal oxidation states. BET analysis revealed the surface area and porosity, while TEM analysis provided information on the interplanar spacing and morphology. Electrochemical evaluations using CV, GCD, and EIS demonstrated that the 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets interwoven with MnCo2O4 nanospheres have excellent specific capacities (654 Fg−1 at 2 Ag−1) and power densities (1521.2 W/kg at 7 Ag−1). The electrode material shows superior cyclic stability with 92.3 % capacitance retention after 5000 cycles.

High-Performance Aqueous Supercapacitors Based on a Self-Doped n-Type Conducting Polymer.

Environmentally-benign materials play a pivotal role in advancing the scalability of energy storage devices. In particular, conjugated polymers constitute a potentially greener alternative to inorganic- and carbon-based materials. One challenge to wider implementation is the scarcity of n-doped conducting polymers to achieve full cells with high-rate performance. Herein, this work demonstrates the use of a self-doped n-doped conjugated polymer, namely poly(benzodifurandione) (PBDF), for fabricating aqueous supercapacitors. PBDF demonstrates a specific capacitance of 202 ± 3 Fg-1, retaining 81% of the initial performance over 5000 cycles at 10 Ag-1 in 2m NaCl( aq ). PBDF demonstrates rate performances of up to 100 and 50 Ag-1 at 1 and 2mgcm-2, respectively. Electrochemical impedance analysis reveals a surface-mediated charge storage mechanism. Improvements can be achieved by adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO), thereby obtaining a specific capacitance of 288 ± 8 Fg-1 and high-rate operation (270 Ag-1). The performance of PBDF is examined in symmetric and asymmetric membrane-less cells, demonstrating high-rate performance, while retaining 83% of the initial capacitance after 100000 cycles at 10 Ag-1. PBDF thus offers new prospects for energy storage applications, showcasing both desirable performance and stability without the need for additives or binders and relying on environmentally friendly solutions.

Rice husk-derived nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon/graphene nanosheets self-assembly for high-performance supercapacitors with chemical blowing method

Carbon materials derived from waste biomass are increasingly popular in energy devices due to their renewability, environmental benefits, and rich heteroatom functionalization. Herein, a simple and low-cost method for synthesising rice husk-derived nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon/graphene nanosheets (RNGNs) by chemical blowing was developed. Carbon was derived from rice husk (RH), while nitrogen was sourced from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and iron sodium salt hydrate (EDTA-FE), serving multiple roles as a blowing agent, an activating agent and a graphitization catalyst in a closed system. This approach facilitates the formation of a unique 3D structure of 2D graphene self-assembly on the wrinkled surface of graphitic carbon. As an electrode material for supercapacitors, the obtained RNGN800–1:1 with high nitrogen content (5.02 %) shows good electrical conductivity and a large specific surface area (1130 m2 g−1). These characteristics bring about an impressive electrochemical performance (334.5 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, 75.6 % retention at 20 A g−1). Moreover, when assembled into symmetrical device, the RNGN800–1:1 demonstrates a high power density of 9.4 kW kg−1and an excellent energy density of 15.2 Wh kg−1 with outstanding long-term cyclability (remains 94.77 % after 25000 cycles). This study introduces a straightforward and environmentally friendly approach for synthesizing nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon/graphene nanosheets from sustainable biomass resources. The resulting material is expected to have broad applications across various areas, including adsorption, catalysis, and energy storage.

High-performance NF-loaded F-NiFe-LDH/rGO nanoflower/nanosheet composite electrode material achieving enhanced specific capacitance and energy density for supercapacitor

High-performance nanostructured F-NiFe-LDH/rGO composite electrode materials with F-NiFe-LDH nanoflowers and rGO nanosheets are synthesized in a controlled hydrothermal method by leveraging the strong synergistic effects between the components, enabling the construction of F-NiFe-LDH/rGO//AC asymmetric supercapacitors. The incorporation of rGO significantly enhances electron transport, resulting in an exceptional specific capacitance of 2860 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, with a remarkable capacity retention of 102 % after 1000 cycles. This represents a notable improvement in electrochemical energy storage, with surface-controlled capacitance contributing more in alkaline electrolytes for F-NiFe-LDH/rGO composite compared to F-NiFe-LDH alone. The asymmetric supercapacitor device exhibits a specific capacitance of 354 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, maintaining 92.31 % of its initial capacitance after 1000 charge/discharge cycles at 5 A g−1, and achieves an impressive energy density of 110 Wh kg−1 at 1 A g−1. The innovation of this work lies in the controllable preparation of nanostructured F-NiFe-LDH-rGO supercapacitor electrode material with enhanced specific capacitance and energy density by the synergistic effect between F-NiFe-LDH and rGO. This work offers a solid foundation for creating high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials and devices for energy storage applications.

Pillar-Supported 2D Layered MOFs with Abundant Active-Site Distributions for High-Performance Alkaline Supercapacitors.

The development of two-dimensional (2D) layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through precise molecular-level design and synthesis has emerged as a prominent research endeavor. However, the utilization of MOFs in their pristine form as electrodes for supercapacitors poses a significant challenge due to their limited tolerance in alkaline environments. To address these issues, we have developed Co- and Cu-based pillar-layered MOFs by regulating the structure of their inner layers through introducing an alkaline N-containing "pillar" to enhance the performance of alkaline supercapacitor electrodes. From the microstructure study and theoretical calculation, the high-density redox centers and efficient chemical bonding modes of Co-MOF determine a unique electron conduction pathway, resulting in excellent energy storage performance. This study underscores the significance of chemical bonding modes and active-site distribution in enhancing the energy storage capabilities of pillar-layered MOFs in alkaline environments, presenting a promising approach for the development of high-performance MOF-based materials for supercapacitor applications.

Unlocking hierarchical hollow nanoblocks of NiMo sulfide with extended interlayer spacing of Mo-S units for high-performance supercapacitor

Molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) has been investigated as electrode of supercapacitor due to its unique structure. However, the restricted availability of active sites and sluggish behavior at the basal surface impede its improvement. Here we propose an unlocking hierarchical hollow strategy to synthesis the bimetallic sulfide heterostructures loaded on the ultrathin carbon (NiS/MoS2@UC). The unlocking hierarchical hollow structure and extended S-Mo layer provide interconnected channels for rapid electrolyte ion transport, while the heterojunction interface promotes the electron transfer and redox reaction. As a result, NiS/MoS2@UC − 2 exhibits a high specific capacitance of 616.7F g−1 at the current density of 1 A/g, which is approximately 10 times higher than that of MoS2@UC and 6 times higher than that of NiS@UC. Moreover, NiS/MoS2@UC − 2 demonstrates a high energy density of 7.7 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 300 W kg−1 with excellent cycling durability.

A facile one-step route to synthesize of novel porous reduced graphene oxide@nickel sulfide (rGO@Ni3S2) core shell nanostructures for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes

In the last decade, there has been significant interest in the use of supercapacitors with high power density and cycle stability in a wide range of applications. Graphene-based hybrid electrodes are considered a very promising option for supercapacitors owing to the synergistic effects they exhibit. In this study, we provide a novel and efficient method for synthesising a core-shell nanocomposite consisting of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) wrapped around nickel sulphide (Ni3S2) using a one-step hydrothermal process. The resulting rGO@Ni3S2 composite exhibits excellent performance as a supercapacitor electrode while also being cost-effective. As a promising supercapacitor electrode, a relatively high specific capacitance of 1052.5 Fg−1 at current density of 1 Ag−1 in 1 mol.L−1 KOH aqueous solution, along with good cycling stability (with a 94.5 % retention rate after 10,000 cycles) were demonstrated for the rGO@Ni3S2 core shell composite electrode. In addition, excellent electrochemical performances were also demonstrated for the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) by using rGO@Ni3S2 as the cathode and activated carbon, respectively. The fabricated ASC showed with a high energy density of 61.9 Whkg−1 at the power density of 585.7 W kg−1. Such high performance of rGO@Ni3S2 core shell electrode can enrich the prospects for future practical applications in energy storage.

Marigold flower-like structured battery-type Cu2O/Co(OH)2 composite electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors

Addressing the limitations of individual Cu2O and Co(OH)2 components, this study aims to develop a high-performance supercapacitor electrode by synergistically combining these materials. A composite electrode material of Cu2O/Co(OH)2 was effectively synthesized on nickel foam via a facile hydrothermal method for supercapacitor applications. The as-fabricated Cu2O/Co(OH)2 composite electrode exhibits a hierarchical marigold flower-like morphology that comprises of many interspersed nanoflakes. This unique morphology offers several advantages, including increased surface area, abundant electroactive sites, and enhanced electrolyte accessibility, all of which contribute to superior electrochemical performance. The Cu2O/Co(OH)2 electrode demonstrates exceptional battery-type supercapacitor behavior, characterized by prominent redox peaks in cyclic voltammetry curves and a well-defined potential plateau during galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The electrode delivers an outstanding specific capacitance of 90.21 mA h g⁻1 at a current density of 1.25 A g⁻1 and retains a remarkable 81.91 % capacitance at a high current density of 12.5 A g⁻1. Furthermore, the electrode exhibits impressive cycling stability, maintaining approximately 107.84 % of its initial specific capacity value after 200 cycles at 7.5 A g⁻1. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements reveal low solution resistance and charge-transfer resistance, signifying efficient charge-transfer kinetics within the electrode. These findings highlight the potential of Cu2O/Co(OH)2 composite electrodes as promising candidates for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Construction of hierarchical and core-shell structured Co3O4@MnO2@NiO nanoarrays as binder-free electrodes for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Remarkable specific capacity and excellent cycle stability of the electrode materials are vital prerequisites for their practical applications. Transition metal oxide-based materials have been extensively explored and employed as electrode materials for asymmetric supercapacitors. However, the actual specific capacitances of these materials are still far lower than their theoretically predicted values. Thus, it is essential to design transition metal oxide with novel structures in order to maximize their specific capacity and cycle stability. Herein, we constructs hierarchical and core-shell structured Co3O4@MnO2@NiO arrays on nickel foam (Co3O4@MnO2@NiO/NF) through a three-step hydrothermal-annealing process, and use them as a direct binder-free electrode for pseudocapacitors. The as-prepared layered hierarchical Co3O4@MnO2@NiO/NF electrode exhibits an impressive specific capacitance of 6.42 F cm−2 (2054 F g−1) at 1 mA cm−2 in a three-electrode configuration, which is largely because of the synergistic effect among Co3O4, MnO2 and NiO. Furthermore, the 3D nanoarray structure can provides a larger specific surface area, a rapid diffusion path, and more active sites that allow to achieve improved electrochemical performance. In addition, the assembled Co3O4@MnO2@NiO/NF//AC/NF ASC all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) displays a remarkable energy density (30.7 Wh kg−1 at 400.4 W kg−1), demonstrating that this all-solid-state ASC owns considerable potential for practical applications in such high-performance energy storage devices.

Dual polarization in CoMoO4-NiMoO4 heterojunction boosted electrochemical charge storage

Binary transition metal oxides (BTMOs) stand out as a focal point due to their distinctive electrochemical properties. However, they encounter challenges like low conductivity and limited active sites. To tackle these obstacles, we have meticulously designed a CoMoO4-NiMoO4 (CMNM) heterostructure featuring significant compressive-tensile strain. This design facilitates the robust integration of CoMoO4 (CM) and NiMoO4 (NM), initiating interfacial polarization, and establishing a built-in electric field (BIEF) that significantly enhances electron transfer between the phases. Moreover, the strain serves as a driving force for the electric field, promoting the rearrangement of interface electrons and further boosting interfacial polarization. This avant-garde approach propels the CMNM electrode to achieve a remarkable specific capacity of 530.45 C g−1 at 1 A g−1, maintaining 327 C g−1 even at 10 A g−1, thus showcasing a superior rate capability. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor employing CMNM as the positive and FeOOH as the negative achieves a high energy density of 78.9 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 927.02 W kg−1. Our methodology, leveraging heterostructures coupled with the interfacial strain tactics, paves a novel avenue for high-performance supercapacitors.

The g-C3N4/rGO composite for high-performance supercapacitor: Synthesis, characterizations, and time series modeling and predictions

Supercapacitors have gathered significant interest in addressing the increasing need for energy storage devices with high power and energy densities. This study introduces a composite framework designed to enhance supercapacitor performance by leveraging the synergistic effects of g-C3N4/rGO composite. The composite electrode, which combines rGO for high conductivity and g-C3N4 for rapid ion diffusion, demonstrates excellent supercapacitor performance. The synthesized materials were characterized using different analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, Scanning and Transmission electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The composite electrode exhibited outstanding performance characteristics, including a specific capacitance of 407.7 F/g, an energy density of 11.4 W h/kg, and a high power density of 186.7 W/kg. Kinetic analysis revealed that the g-C3N4/rGO composite electrode has a dominant diffusive controlled process. The g-C3N4/rGO electrode also demonstrated exceptional durability, maintaining remarkable capacitance retention even after the 5000th charge/discharge cycles. Moreover, the cyclic stability and Coulombic efficiency of the g-C3N4/rGO electrode were modeled and predicted by utilizing the time series analysis technique (Holt-Winters exponential smoothing). Considering the overall results, the g-C3N4/rGO composite electrode has a great potential for energy storage applications.
