Implementation of a Multi-Functional-Group Strategy for Enhanced Performance of Perovskite Solar Cells through the Incorporation of 3-Amino-4-Phenylbutyric Acid Hydrochloride.

Reducing the defect density of perovskite films during the crystallization process is critical in preparing high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a multi-functional molecule, 3-phenyl-4-aminobutyric acid hydrochloride (APH), with three functional groups including a benzene ring, ─NH3 + and ─COOH, is added into the perovskite precursor solution to improve perovskite crystallization and device performance. The benzene ring increases the hydrophobicity of perovskites, while ─NH3 + and ─COOH passivate defects related to I- and Pb2+, respectively. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the optimal device increased to 24.65%. Additionally, an effective area of 1 cm2 with a PCE of 22.45% is also prepared using APH as an additive. Furthermore, PSCs prepared with APH exhibit excellent stability by 87% initial PCE without encapsulation after exposure at room temperature under 25% humidity for 5000 h and retaining 70% of initial PCE after aging at 85°C in an N2 environment for 864 h.

Designed Additive to Regulated Crystallization for High Performance Perovskite Solar Cell

It is a crucial role for enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to prepare high‐quality perovskite films, which can be achieved by delaying the crystallization of perovskite film. Hence, we designed difluoroacetic anhydride (DFA) as an additive to regulating crystallization process thus reducing defect formation during perovskite film formation. It was found DFA reacts with DMSO by forming two molecules, difluoroacetate thioether ester (DTE) and difluoroacetic acid (DA). The strong bonding DTE·PbI2 and DA·PbI2 retard perovskite crystallization process for high‐quality film formation, which was monitored through in situ UV‐vis and PL tests. By using DFA additives, we prepared perovskite films with high‐quality and low defects. Finally, a champion PCE of 25.28% was achieved with excellent environmental stability, which retained 95.75% of the initial PCE after 1152 h at 25 °C under 25% RH.

Anion Binding Interaction Enhances the Robustness of Iodide for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells.

Owing to the ionic bond nature of the Pb-I bond, the iodide at the interface of perovskite polycrystalline films was easily lost during the preparation process, resulting in the formation of a large number of iodine vacancy defects. The presence of iodine vacancy defects can cause nonradiative recombination, provide a pathway for iodide migration, and be harmful to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (HPSCs). Here, in order to increase the robustness of iodides at the interface, a strategy to introduce anion binding effects was developed to stabilize the perovskite films. It was demonstrated that the N,N'-diphenylurea (DPU), characterized by high anionic binding constants and a Y-shaped structure, provides a relatively strong hydrogen bond donor site to effectively reduce the iodine loss during film preparation and inhibits iodide migration in the device working condition. As expected, the reduced iodine loss considerably improves the quality of the perovskite films and suppresses nonradiative recombination. The performance of the device after DPU modification was significantly increased, with the PCE rising from 23.65 to 25.01% with huge stability enhancement as well.

Guanidine carbonate modified TiO2/Perovskite interface for efficient and stable planar perovskite solar cells

The rational design and modification of the buried interface are essential and challenging for high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). TiO2 is a simple and readily available electron transport layer material, but its surface defects and poor interfacial contact with perovskite layers hinder its widespread application. Here, we propose an effective TiO2/perovskite interface modification strategy by introducing simple guanidine carbonate (GuaCO3) onto the surface of TiO2. Guanidine carbonate can improve the interfacial contact between TiO2 and perovskite, reduce non-radiative recombination, and enhance carrier extraction. Moreover, the PbI2 film grown on the TiO2/GuaCO3 substrate tended to become porous during the preparation of perovskite films by the traditional two-step method, which facilitated the complete reaction of organic ammonium salts with PbI2 and promoted the growth of high-quality perovskite films. The experimental results indicate that GuaCO3 can passivate the interfacial defects of TiO2/perovskite, as well as reduce the accumulation of interfacial charges. The device modified with GuaCO3 achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.39 %, which is significantly higher than that of the control device (21.73 %). After storage in an ambient environment at room temperature for 600 h, the unencapsulated device modified with GuaCO3 retained 78 % of its initial efficiency, while the control device retained only 57 % of its initial efficiency. These results indicate that interfacial modification with GuaCO3 is an effective strategy for improving the performance of PSCs.

Ammonium Sulfate to Modulate Crystallization for High-Performance Rigid and Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are attracting widespread research and attention as highly promising candidates in the field of electronic photovoltaics owing to their exceptional power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, rigid or flexible PSCs still face challenges in preparing full-coverage and low-defect perovskite films, as well as achieving highly reproducible and highly stable devices. Herein, a multifunctional additive 2-aminoethyl hydrogen sulfate (AES) is designed to regulate the film crystallization and thereby form flat and pinhole-free perovskite films. It is found that the introduction of AES can effectively passivate defects, restrain charge carrier recombination, and then achieve a higher fill factor. As seen with grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), this approach does not affect the crystal orientation distribution. It is observed that AES addition shows a universality across different perovskite components since the PCE is improved up to 20.7% for FA0.97MA0.03Pb(I0.97Br0.03)3-AES, 22.85% for Cs0.05FA0.95PbI3-AES, 22.23% for FAPbI2.7Br0.3-AES, and 23.32% for FAPI-AES rigid devices. Remarkably, the non-encapsulated flexible Cs0.05 (FA0.85MA0.15)0.95Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3 device with AES additive delivers a PCE of 20.1% and maintains over 97% of its initial efficiency under ambient conditions (25±5% relative humidity) over 2280h of aging.

Constructing low-dimensional perovskite network to assist efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

The use of low-dimensional (LD) perovskite materials is crucial for achieving high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, LD perovskite films fabricated by conventional approaches give rise to full coverage of the underlying 3D perovskite films, which inevitably hinders the transport of charge carriers at the interface of PSCs. Here, we designed and fabricated LD perovskite structure that forms net-like morphology on top of the underlying 3D perovskite bulk film. The net-like LD perovskite not only reduced the surface defects of 3D perovskite film, but also provided channels for the vertical transport of charge carriers, effectively enhancing the interfacial charge transfer at the LD/3D hetero-interface. The net-like morphological design comprising LD perovskite effectively resolves the contradiction between interfacial defect passivation and carrier extraction across the hetero-interfaces. Furthermore, the net-like LD perovskite morphology can enhance the stability of the underlying 3D perovskite film, which is attributed to the hydrophobic nature of LD perovskite. As a result, the net-like LD perovskite film morphology assists PSCs in achieving an excellent power conversion efficiency of up to 24.6% with over 1000 h long-term operational stability.

A numerical approach to optimize the efficiency of a novel HTL-free Sr3Ti2S7 Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite solar cell

The exceptional environmental and structural stability of two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites has made them appealing candidates for high-performance perovskite solar cells. Besides, Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites can be synthesized using low-cost solution processing and have tunable bandgaps as compared to their conventional three-dimensional counterparts. Therefore, a Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite solar cell has been reported in this investigation and the SCAPS program has been used to theoretically study the device performance of the proposed lead-free, environmentally friendly perovskite solar cell. A novel Sr3Ti2S7 material has been utilized as the light absorber for the first time in such a theoretical study. Two different configurations, employing WS2 and C60 electron transport layers have been presented and device simulations have been performed to optimize the solar cell. The utilization of C60 as an electron transport material did not prove to be beneficial for the solar cell as it suffered from major recombination losses. It was also found that higher doping concentration of the electron transport materials could help these cells achieve improved fill factor. The diffusion length of the electrons and holes with respect to absorber defect density was also determined. Mott-Schottky analysis proved that the ITO/C60/Sr3Ti2S7/Au structure had a lower flatband potential compared to ITO/WS2/Sr3Ti2S7/Au. Additionally, from the impedance spectroscopy results, the recombination lifetime of the ITO/WS2/Sr3Ti2S7/Au configuration was found to be 46.7 μs compared to only 12.9 μs for the ITO/C60/Sr3Ti2S7/Au architecture. It was also established that if the thickness of the absorber and the bulk defect concentration were optimized the ITO/WS2/Sr3Ti2S7/Au and ITO/C60/Sr3Ti2S7/Au solar cells could achieve conversion efficiencies close to 11.0 % and 10.0 % respectively.

Improved UV stability of perovskite devices based on the synergistic effect of electron layer passivation engineering and component engineering

The electron transport layer is one of the key factors in constructing high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Pb2+ reduction induced by ultraviolet light can cause the generation of vacancies and defects, leading to the degradation of perovskite films and the reduction of PSCs performances. Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA) is a chelating agent that can bind to Sn2+ divalent metal ions and hence change material properties. Herein, EDTA-SnO2/CeO2 composite electron transport layers were constructed to improve the ultraviolet light stability of PSCs. The oxygen defect in electron layers of tin dioxide could be passivated by the surface of EDTA; whilst rod-like CeO2 was used as a mesoporous electron transport layer and UV shielding agent, which can reflect UV light and prevent the absorption layer from being damaged. CeO2 has also a suitable band gap; this accelerates the charge extraction and transfer, suppresses the recombination of interfacial carriers. The experimental results showed that the ultraviolet light stability of PSCs was significantly improved. After continuous irradiation of ultraviolet light with energy of 80mW/cm2 for 12h, the unencapsulated device with CeO2 maintained nearly 90% the initial efficiency.

Improving the operational stability of perovskite solar cells with cesium-doped graphene oxide interlayer

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have made great advances in terms of power conversion efficiency (PCE), yet their subpar stability continues to hinder their commercialization. The interface between the perovskite layer and the charge-carrier transporting layers plays a crucial role in undermining the stability of PSCs. In this work, we propose a strategy to stabilize high-performance PSCs with PCE over 23% by introducing a cesium-doped graphene oxide (GO-Cs) as an interlayer between the perovskite and hole-transporting material. The GO-Cs treated PSCs exhibit excellent operational stability with a projected T80 (the time where the device PCE reduces to 80% of its initial value) of 2143 hours of operation at the maximum powering point under one sun illumination.

Sulfonic Acid Functionalized Ionic Liquids for Defect Passivation via Molecular Interactions for High-Quality Perovskite Films and Stable Solar Cells.

The high photoelectric conversion efficiency and low cost of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have further inspired people's determination to push this technology toward industrialization. The high-quality perovskite films and high-efficiency and stable PSCs are the crucial factors. Ionic liquids have been proven to be an effective strategy for regulating high-quality perovskite films and high-performance PSCs. However, the regulation mechanism between ionic liquids and perovskites still needs further clarification. In this study, a novel sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (BSO3HMImOTf), was used as an effective additive to regulate high-quality perovskite films and high-performance devices. Microscopic mechanism studies revealed strong interactions between BSO3HMImOTf and Pb2+ ions as well as halogens in the perovskite. The perovskite film is effectively passivated with the controlled crystal growth, suppressed ion migration, facilitating to the greatly improved photovoltaic performance, and superior long-term stability. This article reveals the regulatory mechanism of sulfonic acid type ionic liquids through testing characterization and mechanism analysis, providing a new approach for the preparation of high-quality perovskite devices.

A theoretical review of passivation technologies in perovskite solar cells

Perovskite solar cells have demonstrated remarkable progress in recent years. However, their widespread commercialization faces challenges arising from defects and environmental vulnerabilities, leading to limitations in energy conversion efficiency and device stability. To overcome these hurdles, passivation technologies have emerged as a promising avenue. These passivators are strategically applied at the interface between perovskite absorbers and charge transport layers to mitigate the adverse effects of defects and environmental factors. While prior reviews have predominantly focused on experimental observations, a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the passivators has been lacking. This review focuses on recent advancements in first-principles density functional theory studies that delve into the fundamental properties of passivators and their intricate interactions with perovskite materials and charge transport layers. By exploring the atomic-level roles of passivators, this review elucidates their impact on critical parameters such as open circuit voltage (Voc ), short circuit current density (Jsc ), fill factor, and the overall stability of perovskite solar cells. The synthesis of theoretical insights from these studies can serve as guidelines for the molecular design of passivators with the ultimate objective of advancing the commercialization of high-performance perovskite solar cells.

Tailoring interface and morphology of TiO2 electron transport layer with potassium bitartrate for high-performance perovskite solar cells

The performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has rapidly improved, largely due to advancements in mitigating inherent defects and enhancing interface carrier transport properties. Herein, we provide a facile method to improve the morphology of TiO2 ETLs, suppress defects at interface, and tailor energy level alignment to enhance carrier separation and extraction efficiency by introducing potassium bitartrate (KBT) into the TiO2 electron transport layers (ETLs), achieving high-efficiency and stable PSCs. KBT molecules can enhance the surface smoothness of TiO2 ETLs, resulting in denser and more uniform perovskite films. In addition, the carboxyl groups, hydroxyl groups, and potassium cations containing in KBT improve charge transport efficiency at TiO2/perovskite interface by reducing non-radiative recombination centers in TiO2 and perovskite bottom as well as improving energy level matching. As a result, the target PSC exhibits an obvious improvement in performance with a champion efficiency of 23.35 %, which is greatly improved relative to the control (21.66 %). The long-term operational stability is also remarkably enhanced, after 800 h MPPT, PSCs with KBT remain over 80 % of its initial efficiency. PSCs with KBT-doped ETLs exhibit increased efficiency and stability, highlighting potential of KBT as an interface engineering tool for enhancing PSCs performance.

Tailoring cathode interfaces for high-performance perovskite solar cells using perylene diimide derivatives with ionic diversity

Addressing the global demand for clean energy, perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) have emerged as one of the promising candidates. However, ensuring the stability of PVSCs under various environmental factors remains a critical issue for commercialization. Various ionic functionalities are incorporated into perylene diimide (PDIN) derivatives for altering the work function of aluminum electrodes. Well-known amino N-oxide terminal (PDIN-O), and quaternary ammonium salts (PDIN-Br and PDIN-I) were applied as cathode interlayer (CIL) materials in inverted PVSCs. Within the PDIN derivatives, PDIN-I stands out for its superior electron injection effectiveness, minimized energy losses, and enhanced interface contacts, resulting in an optimal device efficiency of 15.9 %. The research emphasizes the role of efficient interlayer engineering in enhancing layer contact and coverage, inhibiting moisture permeation, and improving device stability. PDIN derivatives emerge as eco-friendly alternatives, offering promising prospects for stable and high-performance inverted PVSCs.

In situ one step growth of amorphous tin oxide electron transport layer for high-performance perovskite solar cells.

Tin oxide used in electron transport layer (ETL) exhibits key role in transmitting electrons and blocking holes in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) device. However, crystal tin oxide nanoparticles (NPs) become necessary to form SnO2 film by method of spin-coating, resulting in possible surface defect and cracks among SnO2 NPs, corresponding to unsatisfied performance PSCs. Herein, an amorphous tin oxide thin film is creatively in situ grew onto Fluorine-doped Tin Oxide (FTO) substrate as ETL. The designed solar cell device with structure of FTO/SnO2/MAPbI3/Sprio-OMeTAD/Ag owns a champion photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 17.64%, 76.20% of filling coefficient (FF), and 1.09 V of open-circuit voltage (Voc), in comparing with 16.43%, 64.35% and 1.05 V for control group (crystal tin oxide as ETL), respectively. Besides, the champion device keeps 83.33% of initial PCE under nitrogen (N2) condition for one month, in comparison with 76.09% for control group. This work provides a viable strategy for facile preparing amorphous tin oxide film based ETL in perovskite solar cells.

Passivating Defects via Retarding the Reaction Rate of FAI and PbI2 Enables Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

The two-step sequential deposition strategy has garnered widespread usage in the fabrication of high-performance perovskite solar cells based on FAPbI3. However, the rapid reaction between FAI and PbI2 during preparation often leads to incomplete reactions, reducing the device efficiency and stability. Herein, we introduced a multifunctional additive, 2-thiophenyl trifluoroacetone (TTA), into the FAI precursor. The incorporation of TTA has proven to be highly effective in slowing the reaction rate between FAI and PbI2, resulting in increased perovskite formation and improved efficiency and stability of the devices. TTA's CF3 groups interact with FAI via hydrogen bonding, effectively suppressing FA+ defects. The S and C═O groups share lone pair electrons with uncoordinated Pb2+, leading to a reduction in perovskite film defects and suppressing nonradiative recombination. Additionally, the CF3 groups impart hydrophobicity, protecting the perovskite film from moisture-induced erosion. As a result, the TTA-modified perovskite film achieves a Champion efficiency of 23.42% compared to the control's 21.52, with 20.58% efficiency for a 25 cm2 solar module. Remarkably, the unencapsulated Champion device retains 86% of its initial PCE after 1080 h under dark conditions (60 ± 5 °C, 35 ± 5% RH), indicating enhanced long-term stability. These findings offer a promising and cost-effective tactic for high-quality perovskite film fabrication.
