High-performance supercapacitor electrode materials from composite of bamboo tar pitch activated carbon and tannic acid carbon quantum dots

A novel composite electrode material comprising bamboo tar pitch-based activated carbon (BTPAC) and tannic acid-derived carbon quantum dots (TACDs) was prepared. The integration of TACDs into the composite BTPAC-60/TACD not only preserved the high conductivity characteristic of BTPAC but also enhanced its hydrophilicity, pore structure, and specific surface area. Electrochemical evaluations revealed that BTPAC-60/TACD delivers a specific capacitance of 677.7 F/g at 0.5 A/g in a three-electrode system, and 281.8 F/g at 1 A/g in a two-electrode setup. Impressively, it achieves an energy density of 56.4 Wh/kg at a power density of 600 W/kg and maintains 95.7 % of its capacitance after 10,000 cycles. This research not only capitalizes on the high-value application of bamboo tar pitch but also provides a new perspective for the development of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Designing high-performance hybrid supercapacitors and electrochemical sensors with carbon nanotube-embedded silver manganese sulfide@AC@NF composites

Recently, there has been a lot of interest in hybrid supercapacitors due to their amazing capacity to store energy, surpassing the energy storage capability of both conventional supercapacitors and batteries. In this work, physical integration of silver manganese sulphide (AgMnS) into carbon nanotubes was achieved using hydrothermal synthesis. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted on the material's electrical characteristics. With this composite functioning as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) acting as the negative, an asymmetric device configuration was used. The AgMnS@CNT composite demonstrated a notable specific capacity of 358.0C/g at a 2.0 A/g rate. The material demonstrated a remarkable 49.5 Wh/kg energy density and a remarkable 1505.0 W/kg power density. 83.3 % of the initial capacity of the composite material remained even after 5000 cycles. This illustrates its continued stability and suggests that its operating lifetime may be increased. Besides; the hybrid electrode is used to detect the glucose in the specimen up to 0 mM to 2 mM. The electrochemical device showed a remarkable value of sensitivity of 1402 μA·cm−2 mM−1. As the field of energy storage technology develops, this dynamic composite may reveal completely new and exciting options.

One-step production of peanut shell derived N, P co-doped carbon materials for high-performance symmetric supercapacitors

In order to realize the reuse of agricultural waste and improve the electrochemical performance of carbon materials, N and P co-doped carbon materials were prepared by using rich and cheap waste peanut shells as carbon precursors and NH4H2PO4 as N and P sources. The effects of the mass ratio of peanut shell and NH4H2PO4 on the structure, composition, morphology and electrochemical properties of carbon materials were studied in detail. The results show that when the mass ratio is 2:3, the prepared PSC-3 has the largest surface area and higher heteroatom content, which provides a structural basis for its high electrochemical performance. Electrochemical tests show that the specific capacitance of PSC-3 at 1 A g−1 can reach 184 F g−1, and has excellent rate performance. When the mass ratio is higher than or below 2:3, the electrochemical performance of carbon materials will be reduced, demonstrating the feasibility of achieving the best electrochemical performance by adjusting the amount of NH4H2PO4. In addition, the symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) assembled by PSC-3 can obtain an energy density of 10.1 Wh kg−1, which has excellent energy storage characteristics.

Non-preoxidation synthesis of MXene integrated flexible carbon film for supercapacitors

Although the flexible carbon film integrated with MXene has been proven to be a new generation of supercapacitor material with good energy storage prospects, the MXene oxidation and the lack of active sites during the preparation of the carbon film can lead to irreversible capacity loss. Herein, a flexible carbon film constructed by MXene-integrated N-doped cavity-interconnected porous carbon nanofibers was prepared by a non-pre-oxidation synthesis strategy combining electrospinning and metal–organic framework derivatization. This flexible carbon film overcomes the oxidation problem of MXene during the stabilization of polyacrylonitrile, and the derived porous structure of cavity interconnection exposes more active sites. Due to its unique structural characteristics and ideal chemical composition, this independent flexible carbon film exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance as an electrode material for supercapacitors. It exhibits an energy density of 26.2 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 500 W kg−1, and a capacitance retention rate of 96.3 % after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. This study provides a unique strategy for the preparation of high-performance flexible carbon films, and this technology can also be extended to other integrated CNF composites for the design of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

High-Performance Supercapacitors Based on Graphene/Activated Carbon Hybrid Electrodes Prepared via Dry Processing

Graphene has a high specific surface area and high electrical conductivity, and its addition to activated carbon electrodes should theoretically significantly improve the energy storage performance of supercapacitors. Unfortunately, such an ideal outcome is seldom verified in practical commercial supercapacitor design and production. In this paper, the oxygen-containing functional groups in graphene/activated carbon hybrids, which are prone to induce side reactions, are removed in the material synthesis stage by a special process design, and electrodes with high densities and low internal resistances are prepared by a dry process. On this basis, a carbon-coated aluminum foil collector with a full tab structure is designed and assembled with graphene/activated carbon hybrid electrodes to form a commercial supercapacitor in cylindrical configuration. The experimental tests confirmed that such supercapacitors have high capacity density, power density, low internal resistance (about 0.06 mΩ), good high-current charging/discharging characteristics, and a long lifetime, with more than 80% capacity retention after 10 W cycles.

Preparation of Few-Layered MoS2 by One-Pot Hydrothermal Method for High Supercapacitor Performance.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a typical layered material, has important applications in various fields, such as optoelectronics, catalysis, electronic devices, sensors, and supercapacitors. Extensive research has been carried out on few-layered MoS2 in the field of electrochemistry due to its large specific surface area, abundant active sites and short electron transport path. However, the preparation of few-layered MoS2 is a significant challenge. This work presents a simple one-pot hydrothermal method for synthesizing few-layered MoS2. Furthermore, it investigates the exfoliation effect of different amounts of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a stripping agent on the layer number of MoS2. Na+ ions, as alkali metal ions, can intercalate between layers to achieve the purpose of exfoliating MoS2. Additionally, NaBH4 exhibits reducibility, which can effectively promote the formation of the metallic phase of MoS2. Few-layered MoS2, as an electrode for supercapacitor, possesses a wide potential window of 0.9 V, and a high specific capacitance of 150 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. This work provides a facile method to prepare few-layered two-dimensional materials for high electrochemical performance.

Designing the redox activity of CuMoO4 electrodes on N-rich reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite for high performance supercapacitor

In this investigation, environmentally friendly supercapacitor electrode materials of CuMoO4 coated on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (CMO/NRGO) nanocomposite were fabricated using a low-cost hydrothermal method. This supercapacitor has currently attracted devices and long-time stability. The electrochemical behavior of the system was investigated with working electrodes coated on Ni foam substrate in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. The findings revealed substantial advancements in specific capacitance for the fabricated electrode, attaining a value of 629.6 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. An asymmetric capacitor was fabricated by using CMO/NRGO (CuMoO4/N doped rGO) and activated carbon (AC). It design enables the hybrid capacitor to attain a balance between EDLC and PC characteristics, making it suitable for applications requiring both efficient energy storage and rapid charge/discharge capabilities. In 1.4 voltage range, an asymmetric capacitor shows good energy and power (42.85 Wh kg−1 at 580.36 W kg−1) density. After 6000 cycles, it retains 87.2 % of capacitance value. The obtained results suggest that CMO/NRGO electrode exhibits significant for developing the effective and long-lasting energy storage systems.

Algae Derived Carbon from Hydrothermal Liquefaction as Sustainable Carbon Electrode Material for Supercapacitor

With the worldwide awareness of sustainability, biomass-derived carbon electrode materials for supercapacitors have attracted growing attention. In this research, for the first time, we explored the feasibility of making use of the carbon byproduct from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae, termed herein as algae-derived carbon (ADC), to prepare sustainable carbon electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitor development. Specifically, we investigated carbon activation with a variety of activating reagents as well as N- and Fe-doping of the obtained ADC with the intention to enhance its electrochemical performance. We characterized the structure of the activated and doped ADCs using scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and BET surface area and pore analysis, and correlated the ADCs’ structure with their electrochemical performance as evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD), impedance, and cycle stability through an assembled symmetric two-electrode cell with 1 M H2SO4 as electrolyte. It was found that the ADC that is activated using KOH (KOH-ADC) showed the best electrochemical performance, and its specific capacitance was 14.1-fold larger with respect to that of the raw ADC and reached 234.5 F/g in the GCD test at a current density of 0.5 A/g. The KOH-ADC also demonstrated excellent capacitance retention (97% after 10,000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A/g) for stable long-term operations. This research pointed out a promising direction to develop sustainable electrode materials for supercapacitors from the carbon byproduct produced after HTL processing of algae.

Ultrafast Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Porous NiCo Layered Double Hydroxide Nanospheres for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Currently, new clean energy storage technology must be effective, affordable, and ecologically friendly so as to meet the diverse and sustainable needs of the energy supply. In this work, NiCo-LDH containing intercalated EG was successfully prepared within 210 s using an ultrafast microwave radiation technique. Subsequently, a series of characterization and systematic electrochemical tests were conducted to analyze the composition, structure, and energy storage mechanism of the NiCo-LDH material. The Ni:Co ratio of 5:5 results in the highest capacitance value of 2156 F/g at 1 A/g and an outstanding rate performance of 86.8% capacity retention rate at 10 A/g. The results demonstrated that the unique porous structure of NiCo-LDH and large layer spacing were conducive to more electrochemical reactions. Additionally, an electrochemical test was carried out on the NiCo-LDH as a hybrid supercapacitor electrode material, with NiCo-LDH-5:5 serving as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, the asymmetric supercapacitor can achieve a maximum energy density of 82.5 Wh kg-1 and power density of 8000 W kg-1. The NiCo-LDH-5:5//AC hybrid supercapacitors own 81.5% cycle stability and 100% coulombic efficiency after 6000 cycles at 10 A/g.

Rational design of the binder-free polythiophene nanofibers deposited nickel foam for the high-performance aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor

Development of the binder-free electrode materials and employing in the supercapacitor is the essential footstep for high energy storage. The present study highlights the cost-effective synthesis strategy for the binder-free growth of the amorphous polythiophene nanofibers over the nickel foam substrate. The presence of functional bonds like CC, C-H, and C-S has confirmed the deposition of the polythiophene nanofibers on the nickel foam, while elemental mapping analysis detected the uniform distribution of Carbon and Sulfur elements over nanofibers. The surface structure of the polythiophene is transformed from nanofibers to a wire-like structure as the result of the monomer concentration variation. The optimized polythiophene film exhibited the highest areal capacitance of 1263.2 mF/cm2 at 2 mA/cm2 with 90.03% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the aqueous asymmetric device (PTh//AC) is fabricated which delivered 31.5 F/g at 10 mA/cm2. The highest specific energy of PTh//AC device was 6.3 Wh/kg. Also, it showed good retention capability with 82.3% retention. Based on these results, the present investigation provides the performance metrics of the polythiophene nanofibers and highlights the potential utilization of the polythiophene-based supercapacitor in practical energy storage systems.

Ni-Doped cerium oxide on rGO: A hydrothermal approach for high-performance supercapacitors

This work describes the hydrothermal method for synthesizing a novel nanocomposite: Nickel -doped Cerium oxide on reduced graphene oxide (Ni-CeO2/rGO). The resulting material exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic behavior, showing promise for supercapacitor applications. The Phase morphology, elemental analysis, surface area and oxidation state were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction studies (PXRD), Raman spectrum, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Brunauer-Emmett Teller (BET) and XPS respectively. Electrochemical analysis involving cyclic voltammetry (CV), Galvanostatic charge/ discharge, and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The specific capacitance is 262.1Fg-1, 504Fg-1, and 728Fg-1 for CeO2, CeO2/rGO, Ni-CeO2/rGO it depicts its suitability for energy storage. This study establishes the Ni-CeO2/rGO nanocomposite as a highly effective material for advanced energy storage applications.

Ni(OH)2@CoMnO3 hierarchical nanosheets grown on carbon cloth for high-performance supercapacitor

Ni(OH)2@CoMnO3 hierarchical nanosheets were prepared on carbon cloth using a two-step hydrothermal method. The integration of large Ni(OH)2 nanosheets with the smaller CoMnO3 nanosheets significantly improved the electrochemical performance. The composite material, Ni(OH)2@CoMnO3, exhibited significantly enhanced specific capacitance (3068F/g at 1 A/g) and remarkable cycling stability compared to its individual components, CoMnO3 and Ni(OH)2, making it a promising electrode material for electrochemical energy storage applications.

Boosting electrochemical energy storage properties of SrGd2O4 through Yb3+ and Tm3+ rare earth ion doping

Electrochemical supercapacitors represent advanced energy storage devices that excel in the swift storage and delivery of electrical energy, effectively bridging the gap between conventional capacitors and batteries. The present work, aimed to investigate charge storage properties of SrGd2O4 and rare earth ions Yb3+ and Tm3+ doped in SrGd2O4. Both materials were prepared via simple sol-gel synthesis and characterized by XRD, XPS, and FE-SEM with EDS. Characterization confirmed the presence of Tm3+ and Yb3+ in the SrGd2O4 matrix with a uniform distribution of elements. The charge storage behavior of pure SrGd2O4 and SrGd2O4:Yb4Tm1 in various electrolytes was thoroughly explored. Large electrochemical potential windows were shown by both electrode materials in aqueous 6 M KOH (1.7 V), which is essential for supercapacitors to achieve high specific energy. Furthermore, SrGd2O4:Yb4Tm1 demonstrated a substantially more pronounced charge storage effect in 6 M KOH electrolyte, with almost double times higher specific capacitance values compared with an un-doped SrGd2O4 sample. The main impact on the electrochemical window had matrix SrGd2O4, while the main impact on specific capacitance had rear earth dopants (Yb3+ and Tm3+). Improved charge storage characteristics of SrGd2O4:Yb4Tm1 were also evident through a notable reduction in overall resistance observed in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments. Concerning the two-electrode GCD measurements, the SrGd2O4:Yb4Tm1 electrode in 6 M KOH showed a specific capacitance of 143 F g−1, with the specific energy of 12.5 Wh kg−1 at 0.6 A g−1. These findings demonstrate the potential of rare earth ion doping in enhancing the energy storage properties of SrGd2O4, offering promising avenues for the development of high-performance supercapacitors.

Ti3C2Tx MXene/reduced graphene oxide/cellulose nanocrystal-coated cotton fabric electrodes for supercapacitor applications

Textile-based electrodes are the most important components of wearable and portable supercapacitors. Ti3C2Tx MXene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have a great potential for the fabrication of high-performance textile supercapacitor electrodes. In this work, rGO was synthesized with the presence of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and Ti3C2Tx/rGO/CNC dispersions with different rGO/CNC contents were prepared. The plain-woven cotton fabrics were coated by homogenous Ti3C2Tx and Ti3C2Tx/rGO/CNC dispersions (5% wt., 15% wt., 30% wt. and 50% wt. rGO/CNC content) and characterized by X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques. The electrochemical characterization techniques showed that Ti3C2Tx/rGO/CNC loaded fabric electrodes up to 15 wt.% rGO/CNC content exhibited a high specific capacitance of 501.1 F g−1 at a current density of 0.3 A g−1 with low internal electrode resistance, and a good electrochemical stability. The results also showed that MXene/rGO/CNC based high-performance textile supercapacitor electrodes can be prepared by simple drop-casting method.Graphical

A structurally controllable flower-shaped phosphide derived from metal-organic frameworks for high-performance supercapacitors

In this study, the flower-shaped phosphide (C/NiCoP) has been synthesized by the solvothermal method and phosphorization. The results indicate that the morphology of the samples can be modulated by varying the metal ratio of the precursor (nickel and cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks, NiCo-MOFs). The SEM and TEM analysis prove that the obtained C/NiCoP has a very complete flower-like structure, when the molar ratio of nickel and cobalt is 1: 1. The electrochemical test shows that the specific capacitance of C/NiCoP is 773 C/g at 1 A/g. The asymmetric supercapacitor (ACS) consisting of activated carbon (AC) and C/NiCoP offers a high energy density of 62.4 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 850.0 W kg−1. The exceptional electrochemical performance is attributed to this unique structure, which exposes more active sites. Additionally, many voids are generated on the surface of C/NiCoP along with the Kirkendall effect, allowing for rapid ion transmission to enhance the Faraday reaction between the electrode and the electrolyte.
