INTERNAL FACTORS INFLUENCING STUDENTS' SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT

The purpose of this study was to discover and provide a descriptive description of the internal elements that influence the high speaking achievement of the students. To gain additional knowledge regarding the elements that contribute to the student's high speaking performance, this research utilised a case study approach supported by quantitative and qualitative data. The data resources included two kids from SMKN 8 who had achieved high success in speaking English, their parents, teachers, classmates, and the headmaster of SMKN 8 Makassar. Observation, interviews, inventories, the TOEIC test, and documentation reviews were the instruments that were utilised in this study. Analysis of the data was performed according to its nature. A qualitative analysis was performed on the information gathered through observation, interviews, and the reading of documents. According to the findings, the internal factors that contributed to the student's high achievement were as follows: (a) a highly positive attitude; (b) a high level of motivation; (c) a high level of interest; (d) a learning style that was very high and positive in both visual and auditory terms; (e) a metacognitive learning strategy; (f) a very low level of anxiety; and (g) a high level of English proficiency as well. After considering all of these elements, it became clear that the student's great accomplishment in speaking was unquestionably due to factors that were internal to the kid.

PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY OF AGE CRISES IN CHILDREN’S DEVELOPMENT

The article examines age crises that manifest themselves in children’s mental development. The study showed that one of the criteria for the successful course of the crisis and cognitive development, in general, is the ratio of negative and constructive symptoms. Correlation analysis also revealed some relationships between the psychological characteristics of the crisis and indicators of readiness to learn. The research showed that the obtained data are not unambiguous. Greater expression of adult behaviour corresponds to higher levels of visual linear thinking (p < 0.01) and visual-motor coordination, the ability to move correctly (p < 0.05). Argument is also positively related to imaginative thinking (p < 0.05). The higher the child’s cognitive motivation and ability to concentrate, the more general questions and new topics he has in communication (p <0.05). These contradictions show that constructive, neutral symptoms and an active form of negativism (argument) with a high level of motivation and intellectual preparation serve the normal course of the crisis. Passive forms of negativist behavioural reactions, on the contrary, are more common in children with a low level of speech development.

Motivational Variables as Moderating Effects of a Web-Based Mental Health Program for University Students: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Self-guided web-based interventions have the potential of addressing help-seeking barriers and symptoms common among university students, such as depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, self-guided interventions are also associated with less adherence, implicating motivation as a potential moderator for adherence and improvement for such interventions. Previous studies examining motivation as a moderator or predictor of improvement on web-based interventions have defined and measured motivation variably, producing conflicting results. This secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial aimed to examine constructs of motivation as moderators of improvement for a self-guided 8-week web-based intervention in university students (N=1607). Tested moderators included internal motivation, external motivation, and confidence in treatment derived from the Treatment Motivation Questionnaire. The primary outcome was an improvement in depression and anxiety measured by the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21. Piecewise linear mixed effects models showed that internal motivation significantly moderated symptom change for the intervention group (t1504=-2.94; P=.003) at average and high (+1 SD) motivation levels (t1507=-2.28; P=.02 and t1507=-4.05; P<.001, respectively). Significant results remained even after controlling for baseline severity. The results showed that confidence in treatment did not significantly moderate symptom change for the intervention group (t1504=1.44; P=.15). In this sample, only internal motivation was positively correlated with service initiation, intervention adherence, and intervention satisfaction. The combination of a web-based intervention and high or moderate internal motivation resulted in greater improvement in the total Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 score. These findings highlight the importance of conceptually differentiating motivation-related constructs when examining moderators of improvement. An Active Learning Approach to Evaluate Networking Basics

Active learning is a paradigm where students take a more active role in their learning process. In this paper, two team-based evaluation activities are established for students according to the principles of active learning in order to assess their knowledge, skills and attitudes. These activities were based on scenarios related to network administration issues, and at a later stage, each team had to make a pitch presentation about what they did and how they did it to address them. Each presentation was rated by all students with a specific construct on a peer review basis, which had previously been validated by a panel of experts. The results obtained revealed quite high values with low variability and an acceptable reliability. Additionally, the level of motivation was also assessed, indicating a high level of motivation while undertaking the activities.

Using evidence‐based decision‐making and cognitive apprenticeship approach to develop students' entrepreneurial mindset

AbstractDeveloping one's entrepreneurial mindset is important for all students, regardless of discipline. Evidence‐based decision‐making (which has the potential to lower costs and improve quality of life) is one approach for applying entrepreneurially minded learning in the undergraduate classroom. This approach allows students to understand trends related to data, in general, and big data, specifically. Furthermore, it better prepares graduates to evaluate and identify effective data science‐based solutions. The purpose of this study is to report on one pedagogical approach to developing the entrepreneurial mindset through integrating evidence‐based decision‐making into the engineering and technology classroom using Microsoft Power BI Desktop (a freely available tool released by Microsoft in September 2013, where “BI” implies Business Intelligence). A mixed methods assessment was conducted including a rubric to measure students' effectiveness in applying the entrepreneurial mindset and a metacognitive reflection to better understand student motivation, awareness of learning, and engagement. First, the rubric was applied, and students were categorized by performance group (e.g., high, mid, low). Second, each performance group was analyzed to identify themes within the reflections. Our findings suggest that students in the high‐performing group communicated overall high levels of motivation, while students in the low‐performing group shared overall moderate levels of motivation. The relationship between performance and motivation among students in the mid‐performing group was inconclusive. Findings from our study suggest that there may be a relationship between students' performance and motivation. The key study implications relate to the use of new literacies, such as technological literacy, data literacy, and human literacy, as practices for promoting the development of an entrepreneurial mindset. Our findings suggest that our approach was effective in accomplishing this goal, but there is also room for improvement. Lessons learned and recommendations are provided.

Socioeconomic Status, Parental Expectations, and Student Motivation as Predictors of Academic Performance of Grade 12 Senior High School Students

This study aims to explore the interplay of socioeconomic factors, parental expectations, and student motivation in predicting academic success. Utilizing a quantitative research design, the study collected data from 99 senior high school students through structured questionnaires. The findings indicate that students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds generally have access to better educational resources, leading to higher academic performance. Parental expectations were found to significantly motivate students, fostering a supportive learning environment and encouraging academic excellence. High levels of student motivation were also identified as crucial for academic success, promoting effective study habits and resilience. The research underscores the importance of a holistic approach in educational policy, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. By understanding the influence of family environment on student motivation and performance, educators and policymakers can develop strategies to enhance educational outcomes. This study contributes to the broader discourse on educational equity, highlighting the role of socioeconomic status and parental involvement in shaping student achievements. It calls for collaborative efforts between schools and families to create conducive learning environments that support all students' academic endeavors.

Instrumental Motivation and L2 Speaking Achievement of Indonesian L2 Learners of English: A Survey Study

The present study aimed to assess the level of instrumental motivation among Indonesian university students learning English as a second or foreign language and examined how it impacts learners’ speaking achievements. Participants included 188 students majoring in non-English disciplines. Through descriptive statistics, the study found that learners had a generally high level of instrumental motivation. They reported high motivation levels linked to academic success, overseas vacations, self-improvement, and notably, future career prospects. Despite this general trend, their motivation to learn English to gain respect was rather low. Through a bivariate linear regression, the study further found that learners’ instrumental motivation barely influenced their L2 speaking achievement contributing to only 0.3% of the variance. These findings suggest nuanced pedagogical implications, underscoring the need for targeted motivational strategies in language education. Further research is recommended to explore these dynamics in different contexts.

Attitudes, Motivation, and Beliefs of Online Foreign Language Learners Amidst the Pandemic

Covid-19 pandemic was an event which undeniably changed the paradigm of language learning. Online language learning has emerged as a significant catalyst, shedding light on distinctive attitudes, motivations, and beliefs among learners. The aim of the present study was to explore how learners articulated their attitudes, motivations, and beliefs in this context. To achieve these objectives, two hundred thirteen respondents participated in the study, completing modified versions of the AMTB (Attitude/Motivation Test Battery) and BALLI (Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory) questionnaires. In addition, eight online language learners were engaged in one-on-one interviews. Quantitative data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, while qualitative data were transcribed and examined using thematic analysis techniques as proposed by Auerbach &amp; Silverstein (2003). Drawing upon the Complex Dynamic Theory by Larsen-Freeman (2017), the study's findings revealed that foreign language learning during the Covid-19 pandemic constitutes a complex dynamic construct that is profoundly influenced by learners' attitudes, motivations, and beliefs. These findings align with prior research, suggesting that learners generally have positive attitudes toward language learning and the target language community, and they exhibit a high level of motivation in their pursuit of online language acquisition.

Motivational Drivers in Implant Therapy: A Novel Treatment Motivation Scale.

Aim This study aims to assess patient motivation during implant therapy using the newly developed implant treatment motivation scale. Materials and methods A questionnaire study was conducted, consisting of 15 questions designed to explore the motivating factors behind patients' decision to undergo implant therapy. A total of 50 patients about to undergo implant treatment at the Departments of Periodontology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Prosthodontics participated in the study. Results Analysis revealed a consistently high level of motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic) among all patients undergoing implant therapy. Conclusions The findings highlight the crucial role of motivation in treatment-seeking behavior, emphasizing the importance of dentists in motivating and guiding patients through the process of implant therapy.

The article analyzes the results of a study aimed at studying overcoming as a leading factor that ensures self-development of the individual and actualizes the need to use pedagogical tools in modern educational practice that contribute to the formation in children and young people of the perception of overcoming difficulties as an opportunity for personal growth. The relevance of studying the problem of self-development and its procedural component is due to various reasons: the new socio-cultural reality, which predetermined the rapid pace of self-development as a condition for the competitiveness of the individual; a high level of motivation of the younger generation to achieve success as a result of self-development; the unpreparedness of modern children and youth to overcome obstacles on the way to achieving the goal; the presence of psychological barriers blocking readiness for self-development. The conclusions are based both on the results of a theoretical analysis of modern scientific literature and on the results of our surveys. Empirical research methods were survey methods presented by the author's tools. The study involved 2474 students aged 11-16 living in the Moscow, Yaroslavl, Kostroma and Kaluga regions. The study included the design and testing of the technology of pedagogical support for self-development of adolescents in additional education in a situation of overcoming difficulties, the implementation of which makes it possible to form adolescents' readiness for self-development, helps to build up individual experience of successful overcoming through the purposeful formation of adaptive coping strategies. The conclusion is made about the effectiveness of the implementation of technology in the conditions of additional education, as well as the possibility of dissemination of the received pedagogical experience in educational organizations of various types and types.

Enhancing Public Service Performance through Motivation, Environment, and Discipline

This study investigates how motivation, work environment, and work discipline influence the performance of Integrated Referral and Service System (SLRT) officers at the Social Affairs Office of Sidoarjo Regency. Using a quantitative approach with a Likert scale questionnaire administered to 85 SLRT officers, data were analyzed through multiple linear regression in SPSS 25. The results reveal that motivation, work environment, and work discipline significantly impact employee performance. Specifically, higher levels of motivation, supportive work environments, and strong work discipline correlate positively with enhanced performance among SLRT officers. These findings highlight the importance of fostering motivational factors, improving work environments, and maintaining effective work discipline to optimize service delivery and organizational effectiveness within public service sectors. The influence of patient motivation on the motor function restoration during stroke recovery. Preliminary results of a clinical study

BACKGROUND: Acute cerebrovascular accidents lead to disability. The most important task is the rehabilitation and adaptation of these patients to society. Impaired motivation reduces the effectiveness of rehabilitation measures. AIMS: To assess the motivation of patients during stroke recovery; identify relationships between the level of motivation, duration and type of stroke, and cognitive and demographic indicators; and determine the influence of the patient’s initial level of motivation on the effectiveness of the rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study analyzed 36 patients with hemiparesis in the early and late recovery period of stroke. All patients were assessed according to the international classification of functioning, disability, and health; functional independence scale; Rivermead mobility index; degree of paresis according to the Medical Research Committee scale; level of spasticity according to the Ashford scale; risk of falls assessment according to the Morse scale; assessment of function of the upper and lower extremities using the Fugl–Meyer test; and balance assessment using the Berg scale. RESULTS: A significant positive correlation was found between the patient’s motivation and cognitive indicators: the integral level of the BTLD (r=0.653; p=0) and the integral indicator of the Mini-Mental State Examination (r=0.536; p=0.001). No convincing evidence supports the connection between the motivation level and indicators as such sex, age, body mass index, time since stroke, stroke type and location, pain level, functional independence level, and motor impairment. Although a trend toward greater positive changes in functional recovery of the arm, leg, balance, and overall independence was observed, no significant difference was found between groups. CONCLUSION: A significant relationship was found between motivation and cognitive functions, which can serve as predictors of the motivation level of patients when planning rehabilitation activities. Ego depletion does not negatively impact novice sprinters’ start performance during a timed 20m all-out sprint

Temporary reductions in self-control due to previous cognitive effort, also known as ‘ego depletion’, have been shown to negatively impact performance in subsequent tasks requiring self-control. Various theoretical accounts suggest that high levels of task motivation may prevent negative behavioural effects of ego depletion. Against this background, the current study performed a conceptual replication of a previous study examining the effects of ego depletion on sprint start performance (i.e., Englert et al., 2015) and implemented additional monetary incentives to manipulate task motivation. Using a pretest-intervention-posttest design, ninety-six novice sprinters performed a sprinting task that required them to complete a series of 20-m sprints. In between pretest and posttest, participants performed a letter writing task either under high cognitive demand (depletion group) or low cognitive demand (non-depletion control group). Subsequently, and prior to starting the posttest, participants were presented either with a monetary incentive or no incentive. Manipulation checks confirmed that the letter writing task successfully manipulated perceived regulatory demand and that task motivation at the posttest was higher for participants who were offered a monetary incentive. The number of false starts decreased significantly with ego depletion, while sprint start reaction times and sprint finish times remained unaffected. Regardless of ego depletion, sprint finish times significantly improved with monetary incentives. These results suggest that brief engagement in a demanding cognitive task is unlikely to impair novice sprinters’ ability to self-regulate during the start of a subsequent, maximal sprinting effort for which they are highly motivated.

Young Generation’s Investment Motivation: Insights from a Self-Determination Theory Perspective

This study aims to understand investment motivation among students in Makassar using the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) framework. Data were collected from students through an online questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS software. The findings indicate that students' investment motivation is influenced by several key factors, including autonomous motivation, competence, social relatedness, intrinsic motivation, and commitment. The results highlight that students have a strong desire to independently manage their investment activities, feel confident in their ability to understand and engage in investment, and benefit from the support of peers, family, and community. Intrinsic motivation plays a significant role, reflecting personal satisfaction and interest in investment, while high levels of commitment suggest a strong dedication to maintaining their investment activities. Overall, the study reveals that students in Makassar exhibit a high level of investment motivation, driven by the need for autonomy, competence, and social connections. The research underscores the importance of financial literacy and social support in shaping students' investment motivation. Educational institutions and financial organizations are encouraged to collaborate in enhancing financial literacy and providing educational programs that support students' investment motivation.

Examining classroom learning behaviors academic and athletic motivation in collegiate athletes

College student-athletes balance the demands of both sport and school in the context of higher education; high levels of motivation are necessary for success in both spaces. Studies have evaluated learning styles and academic motivational outcomes in college student athletes but there is a need to explore how motivation impacts both academic and athletic success. The present study examined the relationship academic, student athletic, and career athletic motivation had with learning styles and major (STEM vs. non-STEM) using Self-Determination Theory as the theoretical lens. College Division I, II, III, and Club college athletes took the Grasha-Reichmann Student Learning Style Scale and Student Athletes Motivation toward Sports and Academics Questionnaire. Learning styles were grouped into intrinsic (independent, participant, and collaborative) and extrinsic (dependent, avoidant, and competitive) styles. There were positive relationships between intrinsic learning style and both student athletic (r(147) = .19, p = .02) and academic (r(147) = .30, p &lt; .001) motivation. Extrinsic learning style was positively correlated with career athletic (r(147) = .27, p = .001) and student athletic (r(147) = .16, p &lt; .05) motivation but negatively corelated with academic motivation (r(147) = -.17, p = .03). Athletes in STEM majors (M = 3.88, SD = 0.36) had significantly higher academic motivation than non-STEM majors (M = 3.66, SD = 0.40), t(182) = 3.85, p &lt; .001. Athletes in non-STEM majors (M = 4.00, SD = 0.88) had significantly higher career athletic motivation than STEM majors (M = 3.56, SD = 0.91), t(182) = -3.29, p = .001. Findings suggest being more independent, participant, and collaborative in class is related to motivation both in school and in student athletic endeavors. Athletes pursuing a STEM major may show higher academic motivation than athletes pursuing non-STEM majors. Encouraging student-athlete learning autonomy via education/intervention could improve intrinsic motivation in sport and classes, though further exploration of these factors is necessary to fully understand their relationship in college student-athletes.

Exploring the Educational Efficacy and Potential of 24-Hour Hackathon Programming Marathon – HackEmotion

This paper addresses the issue of modern didactics and student motivation for self-learning as well as tackling significant practical challenges. In technical and STEAM education, achieving high levels of motivation is particularly important, as students often become overwhelmed by the vast amount of information and opportunities which lead to diminished interest. At the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Silesia in Katowice, a Hackathon – a 24-hour programming marathon – was organized to enhance student engagement. During this event, students confronted a critical problem in modern societye: emotion recognition. The goal was to develop solutions and help for fostering emotion recognition skills in young people with real-world implementation potential. Additionally, students tested their abilities under time pressure, honed their group work competencies, and faced real-time problem-solving scenarios. This paper presents an evaluation of the event’s impact and analyzes the results of a post-event survey, providing feedback to improve the quality of future Hackathons. The main research questions we posed during the research were: RQ1: At what level of quality was the Hackathon event organized? Whether students were well informed and felt cared for during this event? RQ2: What aspects and properties motivate students most to take part in events organized at the university like Hackathon? RQ3: What competencies, knowledge and skills were developed by participants in the Hackathon? RQ4: Do students consider issues related to recognizing emotions important and the created applications possible to use in practice? In this paper, we answer these questions using statistical analysis as well as simple machine learning models.

Not easy to get off track: Motivational trajectories of learners completing a non-formal online course

Non-formal learning is becoming increasingly important in everyday life. Both the availability of open online learning opportunities and the number of participants in online courses continue to grow. Initially learners report high levels of motivation, but completion rates tend to be low. In the present study, we examined motivational trajectories of learners completing a non-formal online course. To this end, 450 learners of 49 open online courses offered by Bavarian universities completed up to three online questionnaires throughout the course. First, we used latent profile analysis to explore motivational trajectories within five subtypes of situational motivation, which resulted in four different motivational profiles. However, all profiles were characterized by remarkable stability over time, and differences only in the actual levels of the five motivational subtypes. Second, we used bivariate latent change score models to focus on differences of change in intrinsic motivation when analyzing simultaneously with situational interest. In addition, we considered self-regulation and mastery goal orientation as predictors of change in motivation. For intrinsic motivation there was only a small mean change and compensating effect from T1 to T2. We discuss the findings in the light of the fact that there are high dropout rates in non-formal online courses and offer practical advice on how to better address non-completers in future research.

Differences in fear of failure and college adjustment by type of medical school entrance extrinsic motivation using a latent profile analysis.

The decision to enroll in medical school is largely influenced by extrinsic motivation factors. It is necessary to explore the factors that affect pre-med students' motivation to enter medical school and their college adjustment, and to develop measures to help them adjust. A total of 407 pre-med students were surveyed regarding their motivation to enter medical school, fear of failure, and college adjustment. We analyzed the latent profiles of extrinsic motivation factors using latent profile analysis. One-way analysis of variance was conducted to examine the differences in fear of failure and adaptation to university life according to the latent groups. After analyzing the latent profiles of entrance motivation, three latent profiles were selected. They were divided into high, medium, and low extrinsic motivation groups. Three profiles scored the highest on job security, followed by good grades and social status. Sophomores were more likely to be high extrinsic motivators than freshmen were. Fear of failure was high in the group with high extrinsic motivation, and adaptation to college life was highest in the group with low extrinsic motivation. Job security was the most important extrinsic motivator for entering medical school, and extrinsic entrance motivation influenced fear of failure and college adjustment. Given the high level of extrinsic motivation among medical students, it is meaningful to analyze the extrinsic motivation profile of entering medical students and how it affects failure motivation and college adjustment.

Investigating the Educational and Social Factors Affecting Saudi EFL Learners' Attitudes toward Learning English

This study aims to investigate the attitude of Saudi EFL learners toward learning English as a foreign language, their motivation, and contextual and surrounding factors affecting their attitudes positively or negatively. Out of the population that comprises students studying in levels 1 &amp; and 2 of the graduate programs at Business College, PSAU, 216 EFL learners of Saudi Arabia were selected through a simple random sampling method. A self-designed questionnaire with partial adoption of modified items from existing studies was sent to the students to collect their responses. The quantitative approach (descriptive quantitative design) revealed that Saudi EFL students typically exhibited a high level of positivity toward English as a foreign language, and they demonstrated a high level of instrumental motivation but a lower level of integrative motivation toward English. The use of Spolsky’s (1969) and Gardner’s (1985) Second Language Learning Model and Second Language Acquisition theories respectively revealed that certain educational and social factors (e.g., English learning situation, language teachers, and parents) had an advantageous effect on Saudi EFL learners. In the same way, different social and educational factors, such as peer groups, educational settings, and educational environments, have been found negatively impacting learners' motivation and their desire to speak or learn the language. The study implies that the factors (learning physical environment, teaching material, peer groups) affecting the learners’ attitude negatively should be improved. The study would be beneficial to instructors and students in understanding the elements that impede language acquisition and assist them in attaining outstanding and effective English skills.
