On chip broadband and high extinction ratios Mach-Zehnder interferometer for DPSK signal demodulation

Differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signals are widely employed in optical communication systems due to the high sensitivity and simple self-delay interference demodulation scheme. In this paper, we demonstrate a broadband on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for multiple channel DPSK signal demodulation. The chip is constructed using a single-mode high-index doped silica glass waveguide with fiber-to-fiber insert loss less than 3 dB and small second-order dispersion. The MZI interference fringe extinction ratio is over 25 dB in the range of C- and L-bands. The MZI is employed to demodulate four parallel DPSK signals simultaneously with similar performance, indicating that the broad bandwidth MZI is suitable for a receiver of massive parallel optical communications.

Enhanced efficiency of correlated photon pairs generation in silicon nitride with a low-loss 3D edge coupler

We demonstrate the generation of correlated photon pairs by using a hybrid integrated quantum photonic platform, where the dual-layer platform consists of a high-index doped silica glass (HDSG) layer to accommodate low-loss linear components and an SiN-based layer to accommodate the photon source. Leveraging the low-loss fiber coupling to the HDSG waveguide and the high nonlinearity of the SiN waveguide, we experimentally realize integrated source of photon pairs with high heralding efficiency. The directly measured photon pair rate is up to 87 KHz (corresponding to 1.74 × 10−3 pairs per pulse) when the coincidence-to-accidental ratio is greater than 10. The raw heralding efficiency can reach 18%. If the filtering loss is excluded, the heralding efficiency can further reach 29%.

Low-loss and polarization insensitive 32 × 4 optical switch for ROADM applications

Integrated switches play a crucial role in the development of reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) that have greater flexibility and compactness, ultimately leading to robust single-chip solutions. Despite decades of research on switches with various structures and platforms, achieving a balance between dense integration, low insertion loss (IL), and polarization-dependent loss (PDL) remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a 32 × 4 optical switch using high-index doped silica glass (HDSG) for ROADM applications. This switch is designed to route any of the 32 inputs to the express ports or drop any channels from 32 inputs to the target 4 drop ports or add any of the 4 ports to any of the 32 express channels. The switch comprises 188 Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) type switch elements, 88 optical vias for the 44 optical bridges, and 618 waveguide-waveguide crossings with three-dimensional (3D) structures. At 1550 nm, the fiber-to-fiber loss for each express channel is below 2 dB, and across the C and L bands, below 3 dB. For each input channel to all 4 drop/add channels at 1550 nm, the loss is less than 3.5 dB and less than 5 dB across the C and L bands. The PDLs for all express and input channels to the 4 drop/add channels are below 0.3 dB over the C band, and the crosstalk is under −50 dB for both the C and L bands.

Low-loss fiber-to-chip edge coupler for silicon nitride integrated circuits.

Silicon nitride (SiN) integrated optical waveguides have found a wide range of applications due to their low loss, broad wavelength transmission band and high nonlinearity. However, the large mode mismatch between the single-mode fiber and the SiN waveguide creates a challenge of fiber coupling to these waveguides. Here, we propose a coupling approach between fiber and SiN waveguides by utilizing the high-index doped silica glass (HDSG) waveguide as the intermediary to smooth out the mode transition. We achieved fiber-to-SiN waveguide coupling efficiency of lower than 0.8 dB/facet across the full C and L bands with high fabrication and alignment tolerances.

CMOS-compatible high-index doped silica waveguide with an embedded silicon-nanocrystal strip for all-optical analog-to-digital conversion

Passive all-optical signal processors that overcome the electronic bottleneck can potentially be the enabling components for the next-generation high-speed and lower power consumption systems. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a CMOS-compatible waveguide and its application to the all-optical analog-to-digital converter (ADC) under the nonlinear spectral splitting and filtering scheme. As the key component of the proposed ADC, a 50 cm long high-index doped silica glass spiral waveguide is composed of a thin silicon-nanocrystal (Si-nc) layer embedded in the core center for enhanced nonlinearity. The device simultaneously possesses low loss (0.16 dB/cm at 1550 nm), large nonlinearity (305  W−1/km at 1550 nm), and negligible nonlinear absorption. A 2-bit ADC basic unit is achieved when pumped by the proposed waveguide structure at the telecom band and without any additional amplification. Simulation results that are consistent with the experimental ones are also demonstrated, which further confirm the feasibility of the proposed scheme for larger quantization resolution. This demonstrated approach enables a fully monolithic solution for all-optical ADC in the future, which can digitize broadband optical signals directly at low power consumption. This has great potential on the applications of high-speed optical communications, networks, and signal processing systems.

Deterministic generation and switching of dissipative Kerr soliton in a thermally controlled micro-resonator

In this paper, we first experimentally demonstrate deterministic generation and switching of dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) in a thermally controlled micro-ring resonator based on high-index doped silica glass platform. In our scheme, an auxiliary laser is introduced to timely balance the intra-cavity heat fluctuation. By decreasing the operation temperature through a thermo-electric cooler, primary-, chaotic-comb and soliton crystal are firstly generated, then increasing the temperature, DKSs switching and single soliton are robustly accessed, which is independent of the tuning speed. During the switching process, varieties of DKSs are identified by tens of the characteristic “soliton-steps”. Besides, by simply changing the operation temperature under which the DKSs are formed, the center wavelength of dispersive waves could be tuned in a broadband range. When the micro-ring resonator operating at temperature larger than 63.5 °C, avoided mode-crossing free soliton can be obtained. Our results are favorable for study of on-chip soliton dynamics and practical nonlinear applications.

Raman self-frequency-shift of soliton crystal in a high index doped silica micro-ring resonator [Invited

High index doped silica glass exhibiting low loss property and CMOS compatibility is a promising material in nonlinear optics. In this work, mode-locked soliton crystals (SCs) are demonstrated in a high-Q (>106) micro-ring resonator (MRR) made in this platform. The asymmetric spectra of SCs are numerically investigated and interpreted as the combined impact of Raman self-frequency shift (RSFS) and the wavelength-dependent loss. By precisely comparing the experimental and simulated spectra based on the perturbed Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE), the Raman shock time is inferred to be at the range of 2.5 fs to 2.7 fs for this material.

Optical frequency conversion in integrated devices [Invited

We review our recent progresses on frequency conversion in integrated devices, focusing primarily on experiments based on strip-loaded and quantum-well intermixed AlGaAs waveguides, and on CMOS-compatible high-index doped silica glass waveguides. The former includes both second- and third-order interactions, demonstrating wavelength conversion by tunable difference-frequency generation over a bandwidth of more than nm, as well as broadband self-phase modulation and tunable four-wave mixing. The latter includes four-wave mixing using low-power continuous-wave light in microring resonators as well as hyper-parametric oscillation in a high quality factor resonator, towards the realization of an integrated multiple wavelength source with important applications for telecommunications, spectroscopy, and metrology.

Subpicosecond optical pulse compression via an integrated nonlinear chirper

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) capable of ultra-fast, signal processing are recognized as being fundamental for future applications involving ultra-short optical pulse propagation, including the ability to meet the exponentially growing global fiber-optic telecommunications bandwidth demand. Integrated all-optical signal processors would carry substantial benefits in terms of performance, cost, footprint, and energy efficiency. Here, we demonstrate an optical pulse compressor based on an integrated nonlinear chirper, capable of operating on a sub-picosecond (> 1Tb/s) time scale. It is CMOS compatible and based on a 45cm long, high index doped silica glass waveguide we achieve pulse compression at relatively low input peak powers, due to the high nonlinearity and low linear and nonlinear losses of the device. The flexibility of this platform in terms of nonlinearity and dispersion allows the implementation of several compression schemes.

Low power four wave mixing in an integrated, micro-ring resonator with Q = 12 million

We demonstrate efficient, low power, continuous-wave four-wave mixing in the C-band, using a high index doped silica glass micro ring resonator having a Q-factor of 1.2 million. A record high conversion efficiency for this kind of device is achieved over a bandwidth of 20nm. We show theoretically that the characteristic low dispersion enables phase-matching over a bandwidth > 160nm.

Efficient self-phase modulation in low loss, high index doped silica glass integrated waveguides

We demonstrate efficient self phase modulation, as well as negligible nonlinear absorption, in low loss (<0.06 dB/cm), high index silica glass-based waveguides. Using approximately 1 ps pulses near 1560 nm we achieve a 1.5pi nonlinear phase shift in an integrated 45 cm long spiral waveguide with <60 W of peak input power, corresponding to a large nonlinearity (gamma) of 220 W(-1)km(-1). Further, we observe negligible nonlinear absorption for input intensities > 25 GW/cm(2). The high nonlinearity and low linear and nonlinear losses of these waveguides make them promising for nonlinear all-optical signal processing applications.

Low-power continuous-wave nonlinear optics in doped silica glass integrated waveguide structures

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are a key component [1] for future telecommunication networks, where demands for greater bandwidth, network flexibility, low energy consumption and cost must all be met. The quest for all optical components has naturally targeted materials with extremely large nonlinearity, including chalcogenide glasses (ChG) [2] and semiconductors, such as silicon [3] and AlGaAs [4]. Yet issues such as immature fabrication technologies for ChG, and high linear and nonlinear losses for semiconductors, motivate the search for other materials. Here we present the first demonstration of nonlinear optics in integrated silica based glass waveguides using continuous wave (CW) light. We demonstrate four wave mixing (FWM), with low (7mW) CW pump power at a wavelength of 1550nm, in high index doped silica glass ring resonators capable of performing in photonic telecommunications networks as linear filters [5]. The high reliability, design flexibility, and manufacturability of our device raises the possibility of a new platform for future low cost nonlinear all optical PICs.
