Towards multi-messenger observations of core-collapse supernovae harbouring choked jets

Over the past decade, choked jets have attracted particular attention as potential sources of high-energy cosmic neutrinos. It is challenging to test this hypothesis because of the missing gamma-ray counterpart. An identification of other electromagnetic signatures is therefore crucial. Extended H envelopes surrounding collapsing massive stars might choke launched jets. In addition, the same progenitors are expected to produce a shock-breakout signal in the ultraviolet (UV) and optical that lasts several days. Early UV radiation in particular carries important information about the presence and nature of choked jets. While UV observations of core-collapse supernovae have so far been limited, the full potential of observations in this spectral band will soon be transformed by the ULTRASAT satellite mission with its unprecedented field of view. We investigated the detection prospects of choked jet progenitors by ULTRASAT in relation to their visibility in the optical band by the currently operating telescope ZTF. In addition, as choked jets can produce neutrinos via hadronic and photohadronic interactions in choked jets, we also investigated how neutrino observations by existing Cherenkov high-energy neutrino telescopes (e.g. IceCube and KM3NeT) can be used in association with electromagnetic signals from shock-breakout events. By considering fiducial parameters of the source population and instrument performances, we estimated the maximum redshift up to which ULTRASAT and ZTF are able to detect ultraviolet and optical signals from these explosions, respectively. Furthermore, we discuss coordinated multi-messenger observations using ULTRASAT, ZTF, and high-energy neutrino telescopes. We find that ULTRASAT will double the volume of the sky that is currently visible by ZTF for the same emitting sources. This will enlarge the sample of observed Type II supernovae by $ For optimised multi-messenger detections, the delay between neutrinos produced at the shock breakout (during the jet propagation inside the stellar envelope) and ULTRASAT observations should be of sim 4(5) days, with subsequent follow-up by instruments such as ZTF about one week later. We estimate that fewer than 1<!PCT!> of the core-collapse supernovae from red supergiant stars that are detectable in UV with ULTRASAT might host a choked jet and release TeV neutrinos. Electromagnetic and neutrino detections, if accompanied by additional photometric and spectroscopic follow-up with compelling evidence for a relativistic jet launched by the central engine of the source, would suggest that core-collapse supernovae harbouring choked jets are the main contributors to the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino flux.

Search for neutrino emission from GRB 221009A using the KM3NeT ARCA and ORCA detectors

Gamma-ray bursts are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The recent GRB 221009A event, identified as the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected, provides a unique opportunity to investigate hadronic emissions involving neutrinos. The KM3NeT undersea neutrino detectors participated in the worldwide follow-up effort triggered by the event, searching for neutrino events. In this paper, we summarize subsequent searches, in a wide energy range from MeV up to a few PeVs. No neutrino events are found in any of the searches performed. Upper limits on the neutrino emission associated with GRB 221009A are computed.

Association of the IceCube neutrinos with blazars in the CGRaBS sample

The origin of high-energy (HE) astrophysical neutrinos has remained an elusive hot topic in the field of HE astrophysics for the past decade. Apart from a handful of individual associations, the vast majority of HE neutrinos arise from unknown sources. While there are theoretically motivated candidate populations, such as blazars -- a subclass of active galactic nuclei with jets pointed toward our line of sight -- they have not been convincingly linked to HE neutrino production yet. Here, we perform a spatio-temporal association analysis between a sample of blazars (from the CGRaBS catalog) in the radio and optical bands and the most up-to-date IceCube HE neutrino catalog. We find that if the IceCube error regions are enlarged by 1$^ in quadrature, to account for unknown systematic errors at a maximal level, a spatio-temporal correlation between the multiwavelength light curves of the CGRaBS blazars and the IceCube HE neutrinos is hinted at, least at a 2.17sigma significance level. On the other hand, when the IceCube error regions are taken as their published values, we do not find any significant correlations. A discrepancy in the blazar-neutrino correlation strengths, when using such minimal and enlarged error region scenarios, was also obtained in a recent study by the IceCube collaboration. In our study, this difference arises because several flaring blazars -- coinciding with a neutrino arrival time -- happen to narrowly miss the published 90<!PCT!>-likelihood error region of the nearest neutrino event. For all of the associations driving our most significant correlations, the flaring blazar is much less than 1$^ away from the published error regions. Therefore, our results indicate that the question of the blazar-neutrino connection is highly sensitive to the reconstruction of the neutrino error regions, whose reliability is expected to improve with the next generation of neutrino observatories.

SND@LHC: the scattering and neutrino detector at the LHC

SND@LHC is a compact and stand-alone experiment designed to perform measurements with neutrinos produced at the LHC in the pseudo-rapidity region of 7.2 < η < 8.4. The experiment is located 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point, in the TI18 tunnel. The detector is composed of a hybrid system based on an 830 kg target made of tungsten plates, interleaved with emulsion and electronic trackers, also acting as an electromagnetic calorimeter, and followed by a hadronic calorimeter and a muon identification system. The detector is able to distinguish interactions of all three neutrino flavours, which allows probing the physics of heavy flavour production at the LHC in the very forward region. This region is of particular interest for future circular colliders and for very high energy astrophysical neutrino experiments. The detector is also able to search for the scattering of Feebly Interacting Particles. In its first phase, the detector is ready to operate throughout LHC Run 3 and collect a total of 250 fb-1.

Magnetic moments of astrophysical neutrinos

We study the impact of neutrino magnetic moments on astrophysical neutrinos, in particular supernova neutrinos and ultra-high energy neutrinos from extragalactic sources. We show that magnetic moment-induced conversion of Dirac neutrinos from left-handed states into unobservable right-handed singlet states can substantially change the flux and flavour composition of these neutrinos at Earth. Notably, neutrinos from a supernova's neutronisation burst, whose flux can be predicted with 𝒪(10%) accuracy, offer a discovery reach to neutrino magnetic moments ∼ few × 10-13 μB , up to one order of magnitude below current limits. For high-energy neutrinos from distant sources, for which no robust flux prediction exists, we show how the flavour composition at Earth can be used as a handle to establish the presence of non-negligible magnetic moments, potentially down to few× 10-17 μB if the measurement can be performed on neutrinos from a single source. In both cases, the sensitivity strongly depends on the galactic (intergalactic) magnetic field profiles along the line of sight. Therefore, while a discovery is possible down to very small values of the magnetic moment, the absence of a discovery does not imply an equally strong limit. We also comment on the dependence of our results on the right-handed neutrino mass, paying special attention to the transition from coherent deflection by a classical magnetic field to incoherent scattering on individual scattering targets. Finally, we show that a measurement of Standard Model Dirac neutrino magnetic moments, of order 10-19 μB , could be possible under rather optimistic, but not completely outrageous, assumptions using flavour ratios of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos.

Neutrino production in starburst galaxies

ABSTRACT Understanding the origin of the diffuse flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube has become a challenging issue within present High Energy Astrophysics. In this work, we present a model to explore the potential neutrino emission of starburst galaxies (SBG) by considering three different neutrino production zones that can be associated to a typical single SBG. The first zone is the starburst nucleus, where due to the high rate of supernova explosions, a significant amount of protons can be accelerated to high energies and undergo pp interactions with cold protons of the interstellar medium. The second zone we consider is the corresponding to the starburst wind, which is formed by the hot gas that emerges from the nucleus and interacts with the intergalactic medium generating shocks. Protons accelerated there can undergo pp interactions with the ambient matter. The third neutrino production zone we consider, is an external one, where we account for the possibility that protons escaping from the whole system interact with the cosmic microwave background. Finally, adding the neutrino contributions of the three zones, we calculate the diffuse neutrino flux and the diffuse photon flux by integration on the redshift range appropriate for SBG. We find that the model behaves well applied to nearby galaxies such as M82 and NGC 253. The contributions made to the diffuse neutrino flux are able to explain part of the data provided by IceCube if typical parameters are considered.

High-energy neutrino-induced cascade from the direction of the flaring radio blazar TXS 0506 + 056 observed by Baikal-GVD in 2021

ABSTRACT The existence of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos has been unambiguously demonstrated, but their sources remain elusive. IceCube reported an association of a 290-TeV neutrino with a gamma-ray flare of TXS 0506 + 056, an active galactic nucleus with a compact radio jet pointing to us. Later, radio-bright blazars were shown to be associated with IceCube neutrino events with high statistical significance. These associations remained unconfirmed with the data of independent experiments. Here, we report on the detection of a rare neutrino event with the estimated energy of 224 ± 75 TeV from the direction of TXS 0506 + 056 by the new Baikal Gigaton Volume Detector (Baikal-GVD) in April 2021. This event is the highest energy cascade detected so far by the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope from a direction below horizon. The result supports previous suggestions that radio blazars in general, and TXS 0506 + 056 in particular, are the sources of high-energy neutrinos, and opens up the cascade channel for the neutrino astronomy.

A Compact Particle Detector for Space-Based Applications: Development of a Low-Energy Module (LEM) for the NUSES Space Mission

NUSES is a planned space mission aiming to test new observational and technological approaches related to the study of relatively low-energy cosmic rays, gamma rays, and high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. Two scientific payloads will be hosted onboard the NUSES space mission: Terzina and Zirè. Terzina will be an optical telescope readout by SiPM arrays, for the detection and study of Cerenkov light emitted by Extensive Air Showers generated by high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos in the atmosphere. Zirè will focus on the detection of protons and electrons up to a few hundred MeV and to 0.1–10 MeV photons and will include the Low Energy Module (LEM). The LEM will be a particle spectrometer devoted to the observation of fluxes of relatively low-energy electrons in the 0.1–7-MeV range and protons in the 3–50 MeV range along the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) followed by the hosting platform. The detection of Particle Bursts (PBs) in this Physics channel of interest could give new insight into the understanding of complex phenomena such as eventual correlations between seismic events or volcanic activity with the collective motion of particles in the plasma populating van Allen belts. With its compact sizes and limited acceptance, the LEM will allow the exploration of hostile environments such as the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) and the inner Van Allen Belt, in which the anticipated electron fluxes are on the order of 106 to 107 electrons per square centimeter per steradian per second. Concerning the vast literature of space-based particle spectrometers, the innovative aspect of the LEM resides in its compactness, within 10 × 10 × 10 cm3, and in its “active collimation” approach dealing with the problem of multiple scattering at these very relatively low energies. In this work, the geometry of the detector, its detection concept, its operation modes, and the hardware adopted will be presented. Some preliminary results from the Monte Carlo simulation (Geant4) will be shown.

Electromagnetic Cascade Emission from Neutrino-coincident Tidal Disruption Events

The potential association between Tidal Disruption Events and high-energy astrophysical neutrinos implies the acceleration of cosmic rays. These accelerated particles will initiate electromagnetic (EM) cascades spanning from keV to GeV energies via the processes related to neutrino production. We model the EM cascade and neutrino emissions by numerically solving the time-dependent transport equations, and discuss the implications for AT2019dsg and AT2019fdr in the X-ray and γ-ray bands. We show that the γ-ray constraints from Fermi can constrain the size of the radiation zone and the maximum energy of injected protons, and that the corresponding expected neutrino event numbers in follow-up searches are limited to be less than about 0.1. Depending on the efficiency of p γ interactions and the time at which the target photons peak, the X-ray and γ-ray signals can be expected closer to the peak of the optical-ultraviolet luminosity or to the time of the neutrino production.

Correlating High-energy IceCube Neutrinos with 5BZCAT Blazars and RFC Sources

We investigate the possibility that blazars in the Roma-BZCAT Multifrequency Catalogue of Blazars (5BZCAT) are sources of the high-energy astrophysical neutrinos detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, as recently suggested by Buson et al. Although we can reproduce their ∼4.5σ result, which applies to 7 yr of neutrino data in the southern sky, we find no significant correlation with 5BZCAT sources when extending the search to the northern sky, where IceCube is most sensitive to astrophysical signals. To further test this scenario, we use a larger sample consisting of 10 yr of neutrino data recently released by the IceCube Collaboration, this time finding no significant correlation in neither the southern nor the northern sky. These results suggest that the strong correlation reported by Buson et al. using 5BZCAT could be due to a statistical fluctuation and possibly the spatial and flux nonuniformities in the blazar sample. We perform some additional correlation tests using the more uniform, flux-limited, and blazar-dominated Radio Fundamental Catalogue and find a ∼3.2σ equivalent p-value when correlating it with the 7 yr southern neutrino sky. However, this correlation disappears completely when extending the analysis to the northern sky and when analyzing 10 yr of all-sky neutrino data. Our findings support a scenario where the contribution of the whole blazar class to the IceCube signal is relevant but not dominant, in agreement with most previous studies.

Present and future constraints on flavor-dependent long-range interactions of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos

The discovery of new, flavor-dependent neutrino interactions would provide compelling evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. We focus on interactions generated by the anomaly-free, gauged, abelian lepton-number symmetries, specifically Le – Lμ, Le – Lτ , and Lμ – Lτ , that introduce a new matter potential sourced by electrons and neutrons, potentially impacting neutrino flavor oscillations. We revisit, revamp, and improve the constraints on these interactions that can be placed via the flavor composition of the diffuse flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, with TeV–PeV energies, i.e., the proportion of νe, νμ, and ντ in the flux. Because we consider mediators of these new interactions to be ultra-light, lighter than 10−10 eV, the interaction range is ultra-long, from km to Gpc, allowing vast numbers of electrons and neutrons in celestial bodies and the cosmological matter distribution to contribute to this new potential. We leverage the present-day and future sensitivity of high-energy neutrino telescopes and of oscillation experiments to estimate the constraints that could be placed on the coupling strength of these interactions. We find that, already today, the IceCube neutrino telescope demonstrates potential to constrain flavor-dependent long-range interactions significantly better than existing constraints, motivating further analysis. We also estimate the improvement in the sensitivity due to the next-generation neutrino telescopes such as IceCube-Gen2, Baikal-GVD, KM3NeT, P-ONE, and TAMBO.

A Cross-correlation Study between IceCube Neutrino Events and the FERMI Unresolved Gamma-Ray Sky

With the coincident detections of electromagnetic radiation together with gravitational waves (GW170817) or neutrinos (TXS 0506+056), the new era of multimessenger astrophysics has begun. Of particular interest are the searches for correlation between the high-energy astrophysical neutrinos detected by the IceCube Observatory and gamma-ray photons detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). So far, only sources detected by the LAT have been considered in correlation with IceCube neutrinos, neglecting any emission from sources too faint to be resolved individually. Here we present the first cross-correlation analysis considering the unresolved gamma-ray background (UGRB) and IceCube events. We perform a thorough sensitivity study, and, given the lack of identified correlation, we place upper limits on the fraction of the observed neutrinos that would be produced in proton–proton or proton–γ interactions from the population of sources contributing to the UGRB emission and dominating its spatial anisotropy (aka blazars). Our analysis suggests that, under the assumption that there is no intrinsic cutoff and/or hardening of the spectrum above Fermi-LAT energies, and that all gamma rays from the unresolved blazars dominating the UGRB fluctuation field are produced by neutral pions from p–p (p–γ) interactions, up to 60% (30%) of such a population may contribute to the total neutrino events observed by IceCube. This translates into an O (1%) maximum contribution to the astrophysical high-energy neutrino flux observed by IceCube at 100 TeV.

High-energy astrophysical neutrinos from cosmic strings

Cosmic strings that couple to neutrinos may account for a portion of the high-energy astrophysical neutrino (HEAN) flux seen by IceCube. Here, we calculate the observed spectrum of neutrinos emitted from a population of cosmic-string loops that contain quasicusps, quasikinks, or kink-kink collisions. We consider two broad neutrino emission models: one where these string features emit a neutrino directly, and one where they emit a scalar particle which then eventually decays to a neutrino. In either case, we find the spectrum of cosmic-string neutrinos to follow a two-parameter model described by a power law with a high-energy cutoff. While none of the models in question fully match the observed HEAN spectrum, we do find that the maximum contribution of cosmic-string neutrinos can still be an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ fraction of the observed flux in addition to producing a bump in the observed neutrino spectrum. Finally, for each of the models presented, we present the viable parameter space for neutrino emission.

SND@LHC: A New Experiment in Neutrino Physics at the LHC

The SND@LHC detector experiment is located at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), about 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point. The detector is designed to measure, for the first time ever, high-energy neutrinos produced at the LHC in the pseudorapidity region of 7.2&lt;η&lt;8.4, which is inaccessible to other LHC experiments. The detector comprises a hybrid system that incorporates multiple components. The detector includes a 830 kg target composed of tungsten plates arranged in alternating layers with nuclear emulsion and electronic trackers: this arrangement functions as an electromagnetic calorimeter. Following the electromagnetic calorimeter, there is a hadronic calorimeter and a muon identification system. The detector possesses the ability to differentiate interactions involving all three neutrino flavours, enabling investigations into the physics of heavy flavour production in the forward region. This research is particularly significant for future circular colliders and high-energy astrophysical neutrino experiments. Furthermore, the detector has the ability to search for the scattering of Feebly Interacting Particles. The detector started operating during the LHC Run 3, and it collected a total of ∼39 fb−1 in 2022. The detector aims to collect approximately 250 fb−1 in the whole of Run 3.

Estimating source distances for high-energy neutrinos: A method for improving electromagnetic follow-up searches

High-energy neutrino telescopes such as ICECUBEor KM3NET issue public alerts describing the characteristics of possible astrophysical high-energy neutrino events. This information, particularly with respect to the arrival direction and the associated uncertainty of the neutrino candidates, is used by observatories to search for possible electromagnetic counterparts. Such searches are complicated by the size of localisation areas, which can be up to tens of squared degrees or more, coupled with the absence of constraints on the distance or nature of the possible source – in contrast to gravitational wave alerts issued by instruments such as LIGO/VIRGO. Here, we describe a method for deriving a probable distance interval for the astrophysical source that may possibly be associated with a high-energy neutrino event, which may then be used in a cross-matching with galaxy catalogues to search for plausible electromagnetic counterparts. This study is intended to serve as a guide for high-energy neutrino followup campaigns.

Interpretation of the Observed Neutrino Emission from Three Tidal Disruption Events

Three Tidal Disruption Event candidates (AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr, and AT2019aalc) have been associated with high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in multimessenger follow-ups. In all cases, the neutrino observation occurred days after the maximum of the optical-ultraviolet (OUV) luminosity. We discuss unified fully time-dependent interpretations of the neutrino signals where the neutrino delays are not a statistical effect, but rather the consequence of a physical scale of the post-disruption system. Noting that X-ray flares and infrared (IR) dust echoes have been observed in all cases, we consider three models in which quasi-isotropic neutrino emission is due to the interactions of accelerated protons of moderate, medium, and ultra-high energies with X-rays, OUV, and IR photons, respectively. We find that the neutrino time delays can be well described in the X-ray model assuming magnetic confinement of protons in a calorimetric approach if the unobscured X-ray luminosity is roughly constant over time, and in the IR model, where the delay is directly correlated with the time evolution of the echo luminosity (for which a model is developed here). The OUV model exhibits the highest neutrino production efficiency. In all three models, the highest neutrino fluence is predicted for AT2019aalc, due to its high estimated supermassive black hole mass and low redshift. All models result in diffuse neutrino fluxes that are consistent with observations.

Bump hunting in the diffuse flux of high-energy cosmic neutrinos

The origin of the bulk of the high-energy astrophysical neutrinos seen by IceCube, with TeV--PeV energies, is unknown. If they are made in photohadronic, i.e., proton-photon, interactions in astrophysical sources, this may manifest as a bump-like feature in their diffuse flux, centered around a characteristic energy. We search for evidence of this feature, allowing for variety in its shape and size, in 7.5 years of High-Energy Starting Events (HESE) collected by the IceCube neutrino telescope, and make forecasts using larger data samples from upcoming neutrino telescopes. Present-day data reveals no evidence of bump-like features, which allows us to constrain candidate populations of photohadronic neutrino sources. Near-future forecasts show promising potential for stringent constraints or decisive discovery of bump-like features. Our results provide new insight into the origins of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, complementing those from point-source searches.
