Intake of the different types of dairy products, genetic predisposition, and the risks of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cirrhosis: a prospective cohort study.

Background: The association of dairy product consumption with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cirrhosis remains controversial. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the associations between the consumption of the different types of dairy products, genetic predisposition, and the risks of NAFLD and cirrhosis. Methods: This cohort study included 190 145 participants from the UK Biobank Study. The consumption of the different types of dairy products was assessed based on the Oxford WebQ at baseline and defined as the sum of milk, yogurt, and cheese. NAFLD and cirrhosis were evaluated using hospital inpatient records and death data in the UK Biobank. The weighted genetic risk score (GRS) for NAFLD and cirrhosis was constructed using 5 and 6 single-nucleotide variants (SNVs), respectively. Cox proportional hazards regression models were utilized to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between genetic factors and different types of dairy products with the incidence of NAFLD and cirrhosis. Results: During a median follow-up of 11.6 years, 1512 NAFLD and 556 cirrhosis cases were ascertained. After adjusting for several potential confounders, the HRs (95% CIs) (Q4 vs. Q1) of NAFLD were 0.86 (0.74, 0.995) for total dairy products, 0.96 (0.84, 1.09) for high-fat dairy products, 0.78 (0.67, 0.92) for low-fat dairy products, 0.86 (0.74, 0.99) for unfermented dairy products, and 0.79 (0.68, 0.91) for fermented dairy products. The multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) (Q4 vs. Q1) of cirrhosis were 0.75 (0.59, 0.96) for total dairy products, 0.97 (0.78, 1.19) for high-fat dairy products, 0.67 (0.51, 0.89) for low-fat dairy products, 0.75 (0.59, 0.96) for unfermented dairy products, and 0.71 (0.56, 0.90) for fermented dairy products. The associations of high-fat dairy products and fermented dairy products with NAFLD and cirrhosis were found to be nonlinear (P for nonlinear <0.05). No interaction was observed between dairy product consumption and NAFLD or cirrhosis genetic susceptibility. Conclusions: Higher consumption of dairy products, except for high-fat dairy, was correlated with lower risks of NAFLD and cirrhosis, regardless of their differences in genetic susceptibility.

Calcium - a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023.

The aim of this scoping review was to conduct evidence-based documentations between calcium (Ca) intake and health outcomes for updating dietary reference values (DRVs) and food-based dietary guidelines (FBDGs) in the sixth edition of Nordic Nutrient Recommendations (NNR2023). The systematic literature search was limited to reviews on human data published between 2011 and June 2021. Systematic reviews (SRs) and original publications of relevance for this scoping review were included. A common practice of designing studies on health outcomes related to Ca supplement intake is to examine combined Ca and vitamin D, and therefore, a combination of Ca with vitamin D (CaD) was included in this review. In total, 27 studies addressing the association between dietary or supplemental Ca on bone health, bone mineral density (BMD), pregnancy-related outcomes, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancers, obesity, and mortality were reviewed. SRs showed that both dietary and supplemental Ca intakes were positively associated with BMD, but evidence did not support the benefit in fracture prevention. Current evidence did not support that Ca or CaD supplementation increases risk of coronary heart disease or all-cause mortality in older adults, but that Ca may be beneficial for hypertension, especially in young people. Increasing Ca intake may be beneficial during pregnancy, especially for those at high risk of pre-eclampsia due to ethnicity, age, high BMI, and those with low baseline Ca intake. The associations between high Ca intake and cancers were varied, with strong evidence that high consumption of dairy products is protective against colorectal cancer and limited-suggestive evidence that dairy products and diets high in Ca might also be protective against breast cancer. Moreover, there is limited-suggestive evidence that dairy products and diets high in Ca increase the risk of prostate cancer. Based on current evidence, Ca intake is beneficial or neutral in relation to most of the outcomes evaluated in this review. Data from the Nordic countries show that average Ca intake is around the same as previously recommended by NNR. However, the average Ca intake in the Baltic countries is below the recommendations.

Parkinson's disease updates: Addressing the pathophysiology, risk factors, genetics, diagnosis, along with the medical and surgical treatment.

After only Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease. The incidence of this disease increases with age, especially for those above 70 years old. There are many risk factors that are well-established in the contribution to the development of PD, such as age, gender, ethnicity, rapid eye movement sleep disorder, high consumption of dairy products, traumatic brain injury, genetics, and pesticides/herbicides. Interestingly, smoking, consumption of caffeine, and physical activities are the protective factors of PD. A deficiency of dopamine in the substantia nigra of the brainstem is the main pathology. This, subsequently, alters the neurotransmitter, causing an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory signals. In addition, genetics is also involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. As a result, patients exhibit characteristic motor symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, bradykinesia, and postural instability, along with non-motor symptoms, including dementia, urinary incontinence, sleeping disturbances, and orthostatic hypotension. PD may resemble other diseases; therefore, it is important to pay attention to the diagnosis criteria. Parkinson's disease dementia can share common features with AD; this can include behavioral as well as psychiatric symptoms, in addition to the pathology being protein aggregate accumulation in the brain. For PD management, the administration of pharmacological treatment depends on the motor symptoms experienced by the patients. Non-pharmacological treatment plays a role as adjuvant therapy, while surgical management is indicated in chronic cases. This paper aims to review the etiology, risk factors, protective factors, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, associated conditions, and management of PD.

High consumption of dairy products and risk of major adverse coronary events and stroke in a Swedish population.

The association between the consumption of dairy products and risk of CVD has been inconsistent. There is a lack of studies in populations with high intakes of dairy products. We aimed to examine the association between intake of dairy products and risk of incident major adverse coronary events and stroke in the Swedish Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort study. We included 26190 participants without prevalent CVD or diabetes. Dietary habits were obtained from a modified diet history, and endpoint data were extracted from registers. Over an average of 19 years of follow-up, 3633 major adverse coronary events cases and 2643 stroke cases were reported. After adjusting for potential confounders, very high intakes of non-fermented milk (>1000 g/d) compared with low intakes (<200 g/d) were associated with 35 % (95 % CI (8, 69)) higher risk of major adverse coronary events. In contrast, moderate intakes of fermented milk (100-300 g/d) were associated with a lower risk of major adverse coronary events compared with no consumption. Intakes of cheese (only in women) and butter were inversely associated with the risk of major adverse coronary events. We observed no clear associations between any of the dairy products and stroke risk. These results highlight the importance of studying different dairy foods separately. Further studies in populations with high dairy consumption are warranted.

Dietary behaviours of individuals with lynch syndrome at high risk of colorectal cancer: Results from the AAS-lynch study

Individuals with Lynch syndrome (LS) have a high lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) due to genetic alterations. Nutrition is one of the main modifiable risk factors for sporadic CRC, however this has not been established in LS patients. The present study aimed to give a detailed overview of dietary intakes in individuals with LS, and associated individual characteristics. Dietary behaviours of individuals with LS from the AAS-Lynch clinical trial (2017-2022) were obtained using a food frequency questionnaire. Dietary intakes, food group consumption and overall diet quality (dietary patterns, adherence to the Mediterranean diet) were described according to sociodemographic, anthropometric and clinical characteristics, and compared to participants without LS from the NutriNet-Santé study (matched on sex, age, BMI and region). 280 individuals with LS were included in this analysis and matched with 547 controls. Compared to controls, LS patients consumed less fibre, legumes, fruit and vegetables and more red and processed meat (all p<0.01). They also had a lower Mediterranean diet score (p=0.002). Among LS patients, men, younger patients, or those with disadvantaged situation had a diet of poorer nutritional quality with lower adherence to a "Healthy" diet (all p≤0.01). LS Patients with prevalent CRC had a higher consumption of dairy products than recommended, while those with prevalent adenoma consumed more vegetables, and less sugar and sweets (all p≤0.01). Although patients with LS were aware of their high lifetime risk of developing cancer, their diets were not optimal and included nutritional risk factors associated to CRC.

Comparison of three digestion methods for determination of lead and cadmium in milk and dairy products

Background: Toxic metals enter the human food chain through water, soil, and plants. High consumption of dairy products makes it necessary to measure their concentrations in milk and its products. Methods: In this study, four samples of dairy products, including milk, dough, yogurt, and cream were selected. They were spiked with concentrations of 0, 20, 40, and 60 μg/kg of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) separately. In all samples, the concentration of these metals was determined using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) after microwave, wet, and dry ashing digestion methods. To select the best digestion method, recovery percentage, linearity of increasing concentrations, relative standard deviation (RSD), and the limit of detection were used. Results: According to the results, the RSD of all measurements was less than 5%. The instrument detection limit for Pb and Cd were 0.188 and 0.157 μg/L, respectively. The recovery efficiency of all digested samples by three methods was between 75.7% and 120%. According to the linearity index and R2 , the microwave digestion method with 90 to 110% efficiency was the best for Pb-spiked samples, and the dry digestion method was the best for Cd-spiked samples. Conclusion: Considering all indexes, microwave digestion was the best method for Pb and Cd samples.

Assessment of diet quality in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

Micronutrient malnutrition is a serious public health problem in most developing countries, including Morocco, due to poor and therefore lower quality diets that lack dietary diversity. The present study aimed to assess dietary diversity and variety and their relationship with micronutrient adequacy in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). A cross-sectional study was carried among 240 children and adolescents with T1D. Weight and height were measured and BMI was calculated. Dietary intake data were obtained from two 24-h recalls. A Dietary diversity (DDS) and dietary variety scores (DVS) and mean adequacy ratio (MAR) and nutritional adequacy ratios (NARs) were calculated and compared according to sociodemographic/anthropometric categories. 52.1% of the patients were female. The mean age of the patients was 8.49 ± 4.1 years. The mean BMI was 19.44 ± 5.24 kg/m2; the mean DDS was 4.62±1.20 and the mean MAR was 0.66 ± 0.11. Older children living in rural areas have a low DDS/DVS. Parental education and income level are associated with DDS/DVS. General and central obesity were significantly elevated in children with high DDS. In addition, a high intake of vegetables, eggs, fiber and micronutrients (Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium, Zinc, Phosphorus and Vit B1) is associated with a high DDS; however, high DVS is associated with high consumption of dairy products, carbohydrates and low intake of protein and fat. There are also positive correlations between DDS/DVS and NARs for various nutrients. The quality of the respondents' diets are moderately diversified. DDS or DVS can be used as indicators ofmicronutrient adequacy in Moroccan T1D children. Nutritional education needs to be strengthened to improve dietary diversity in children, especially in rural areas.

Parental Education Moderates the Relation between Physical Activity, Dietary Patterns and Atopic Diseases in Adolescents.

Background: Atopic diseases, particularly asthma, eczema, and rhinitis, are among the most common chronic diseases in childhood, with several factors implicated in their pathogenesis. Our study examined the role of parental education in the association between diet, physical activity, and atopy in adolescents. Methods: 1934 adolescents (47.5% boys) aged 13–14 years old reported information about their diet and physical activity and their parents reported their highest educational level. The moderating role of parental education level (primary/secondary vs. tertiary) in the relation between lifestyle patterns and atopic diseases was examined with logistic regression analyses. Results: High consumption of dairy products was inversely associated to adolescents’ asthma and rhinitis symptoms overall, but this relation was almost 50% stronger for the adolescents with high parental education level background. The same pattern of reduction of the odds was noticed also regarding the association among the high intake of fruits, vegetables, pulses, with all three atopic diseases and the adherence to a physically active lifestyle only with current asthma and eczema (all p < 0.05). Conclusion: Adolescents who are physically active and consume a higher intake of fruits, vegetables, and pulses and a lower intake of fast-food and sweets, and their parents/guardians having higher education, are less likely to have any current symptoms of asthma, eczema, and rhinitis than the ones who have low educated parents.

Does a school snack make a difference? An evaluation of the World Food Programme emergency school feeding programme in Lebanon among Lebanese and Syrian refugee children.

To investigate the effects of providing a daily healthy school snack on children's nutritional, social and educational outcomes and explore stakeholders' perceptions of an emergency school feeding programme (SFP). Convergence triangulation mixed-methods study design. Associations were examined between receiving the school feeding intervention and children's outcomes using multivariable regression models. Quantitative data were complemented with interviews and focus group discussions with parents and staff. In vulnerable communities in Lebanon, the World Food Programme has implemented an emergency SFP targeting Lebanese (attending morning sessions) and Syrian refugee children (attending afternoon sessions) in public schools. Children from ten intervention schools (morning n 403; afternoon n 379) and ten matched control schools (morning n 399; afternoon n 401), as well as twenty-nine parents and twenty-two school staff members. Diet diversity was higher in intervention schools as compared with control with a significantly higher consumption of dairy products, nuts and fruit in both sessions. Child-reported food insecurity experience was lower in children attending the afternoon session of intervention v. control schools. The SFP intervention was associated with higher school engagement and sense of school community in the morning session only. While the SFP was significantly associated with higher attendance for children in afternoon sessions only, it was significantly associated with school retention of children in both sessions. A daily healthy snack potentially acts as an incentive to improve children's nutritional outcomes, school engagement, sense of belonging, equality between students and improvement in children's attendance and retention in public schools.

Dairy product consumption and type 2 diabetes among Korean adults: a prospective cohort study based on the Health Examinees (HEXA) study.

OBJECTIVESIt has been suggested that the consumption of dairy products helps lower the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D). We investigated the association between the consumption of dairy products and T2D events in middle-aged Korean adults.METHODSWe followed up 53,288 participants (16,895 male and 36,393 female) in the Health Examinees (HEXA) study. The consumption of dairy products was assessed using the self-administered food frequency questionnaire, and T2D was defined according to the 2015 treatment guidelines of the Korean Diabetes Association. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between the consumption of dairy products and the risk of T2D were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models after adjusting for potential confounders. Spline regression was used to better represent the association between the consumption of dairy products and the risk of T2D.RESULTSAmong male, those with higher consumption of dairy products had a significantly lower risk of T2D than those who consumed essentially no dairy products (HR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.58 to 0.91). In particular, consumption of yogurt (HR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.60 to 0.93; ptrend=0.035) and cheese (HR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.49 to 0.89; ptrend=0.005) was negatively associated with the incidence of T2D in male. In female, daily consumption of 1 serving of yogurt decreased the risk of T2D by 11%.CONCLUSIONSThe association between the consumption of dairy products and the risk of T2D differed by sex and dairy product type. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these associations.

Dairy products and the risk of developing prostate cancer: A large-scale cohort study (JACC Study) in Japan.

Dairy products have been indicated as a risk factor for prostate cancer. However, only a few epidemiological studies have reported dairy products as being a risk factor for prostate cancer in Japan, reporting contradictory results. We therefore investigated the association between the intake of dairy products and the occurrence of prostate cancer through a large‐scale cohort study. The Japan Collaborative Cohort study analyzed approximately 110,000 residents from various Japanese districts who participated in our questionnaire survey during 1988–1990. The subjects of the present study were 26,464 men (age range: 40–79 years) from 24 districts wherein cancer incidence was reported. Their clinical course was followed up until 2009. Hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated using Cox's proportional hazards model, adjusted for age, survey area, family history of prostate cancer, body mass index, and total energy intake. For diet, we calculated the HRs associated with intermediate and high consumption of dairy products and compared them with those associated with low consumption. There were 412 cases of prostate cancer in the survey population. As dairy products, milk, yogurt, cheese, and butter were evaluated. Among them, milk consumption was associated with a significant risk (HR = 1.37, p = 0.009) and a dose‐dependent response (p for trend = 0.009) adjusted for age and family history of prostate cancer, stratified by area. Milk and yogurt consumption showed a significantly positive risk and a dose–response relationship adjusted for age, family history of prostate cancer, body mass index, and total energy intake, stratified by area. In summary, a high intake of dairy products such as milk increased the risk of developing prostate cancer in Japanese men.

Dairy Consumption and Risk of Cancer: An 11 Year Prospective Cohort Study of the China Kadoorie Biobank

ObjectivesConsumption of dairy products has been associated with possible higher or lower risks of some types of cancer. However, results are often inconsistent and evidence from China, particularly for prospective data, is very limited. We therefore investigated the associations between intake of dairy products and incidence of 17 common cancers in Chinese adults. MethodsThe prospective China Kadoorie Biobank study recruited slightly over 0.5 million adults, aged 30–79 years, from ten diverse regions (five urban and five rural) in China during 2004–2008. Information on the consumption frequency of major food groups, including total dairy products, was collected at baseline and periodic resurveys, using a validated interviewer-administered laptop-based questionnaire. Over a mean follow-up of 10.8 years, 29,177 incident malignant cancer cases were recorded among the 510,146 study participants, who did not have a prior history of cancer at baseline. Cox regression analyses were performed to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for incident cancers associated with dairy intake. Analyses were stratified by age-at-risk, sex and region, and adjusted for cancer family history, education, income, alcohol intake, smoking status, physical activity, fresh fruit intake and BMI. Analyses for liver cancer was additionally adjusted for status of hepatitis B surface antigen. ResultsOverall at baseline, 68.5% of participants reported never or rare dairy consumption and 20.4% reported weekly dairy consumption (≥1 day/week), with milk accounting largely for the total dairy consumption. The multivariable-adjusted HRs per 50 g/day increase in usual dairy consumption were 1.07 (95% CI 1.04–1.10), 1.12 (1.02–1.22), 1.19 (1.01–1.41) and 1.17 (1.07–1.29) for total cancer, liver cancer, lymphoma and female breast cancer, respectively. These associations were similar across subgroups defined by baseline sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics (e.g., sex and smoking status) and across the ten survey regions. No significant associations were observed between dairy intake and risk of the other 14 common cancer sites. ConclusionsIn this large study of Chinese adults, higher consumption of dairy products was associated with higher risks of liver cancer, lymphoma and female breast cancer. Effects of a Mediterranean Diet, Dairy, and Meat Products on Different Phenotypes of Dyslipidemia: A Preliminary Retrospective Analysis.

Background: Dyslipidemia is one of the major causes of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and a Mediterranean Diet (MD) is recommended for its prevention. The objectives of this study were to evaluate adherence to an MD at baseline and follow-up, in a cohort of dyslipidemic patients, and to evaluate how different food intakes can influence lipid profile, especially how different sources of saturated fatty acids impact lipid phenotype. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 106 dyslipidemic patients. Clinical characteristics, lipid profile, and food habits data were collected at baseline and after three months of follow-up with counseling. Adherence to an MD was evaluated with a validated food-frequency questionnaire (MEDI-LITE score). Results: The cross-sectional analysis showed that higher consumption of dairy products correlated independently with higher levels of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and with lower triglycerides (TG) levels. Instead, lower HDL-C and TG levels and higher TC levels were independently associated with higher consumption of meat products. Adherence to an MD significantly improved after the follow-up period, from a mean value of 10 ± 3 (median 10, IQR 8–12) to 13 ± 2 (median 14, IQR 12–15), p < 0.0001. Conclusions: Dyslipidemic patients benefit from counseling for improving their adherence to an MD. The high intake of dairy products was associated with less atherogenic hyperlipidemia, which was characterized by higher levels of TC and HDL-C as compared withs the intake of an excessive amount of meat products, which was associated with higher levels of TC and TG and lower levels of HDL-C.

Dietary pattern and telomere length in preschool children in a middle-income country.

Telomere length (TL) has been associated with lifestyle and dietary pattern. However, the available evidence on this association in children is scarce, especially in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association of dietary pattern and leukocyte TL (LTL) in preschool children, Sabzevar, Iran (2017). This cross‐sectional study was based on 187 preschool children (aged 5 to 7) recruited from 27 kindergartens. Nutrition information including amounts of consumed dairy products, meat and processed meat products, nuts and seeds, white bread and refined grains, fruits, vegetables, simple sugars, fats and drinks was obtained through a questionnaire. Linear mixed‐effects models were fitted with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) plate ID and kindergartens as random effects to estimate the association of each food group consumption with LTL, controlled for relevant covariates. Higher consumption of dairy products and sugar was associated with shorter LTL (β = −0.180, 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.276, −0.085, P value <0.001 and β = −0.139, 95% CI: −0.193, −0.086, P value <0.001, respectively). An increase in consumption of fish, nuts and seeds, coloured fruits, green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and olive was significantly associated with the increase in relative LTL. The associations for the consumption of legumes, other fruits, yellow and orange vegetables, red meat, egg, white bread and refined grains, solid and liquid fats, processed meats, potato chips, carbonated drinks, tea (black) and soft drinks groups were not statistically significant. Our findings showed that there was an association between the consumption of certain food groups with LTL.

Associations of dairy intake with risk of incident metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study.

This cohort study examined the association of total and individual dairy products with the risk of incident MetS and its components in children and adolescents. We prospectively assessed 531 participants aged 6-18years without the MetS at baseline during an average 6.6-year follow-up period. Dairy consumption was estimated with a valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire. The MetS was defined according to the Cook criteria. The multivariable regression model was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) for incident MetS associated with the consumption of dairy products. The incidence of MetS was 9.8% after an average 6.6-year follow-up. After adjusting for potential confounders, OR (95% confidence interval) for incident MetS was 0.48 (0.23-1.00) for total dairy, 0.44 (0.21-0.92) for low-fat dairy, 0.46 (0.22-0.98) for low-fat milk, and 0.45 (0.21-0.97) for low-fat yogurt when comparing participants in the highest versus lowest tertile. A moderate intake of regular cheese was associated with decreased risk of MetS (OR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.19-0.97). Replacing one serving/day of total dairy with nuts was associated with a lower (OR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.42-0.95), whereas replacement by red and processed meat was associated with higher (OR: 1.55, 95%CI: 1.21-1.97) MetS risk. No significant association was found between high-fat dairy and MetS risk. Higher consumption of dairy products, particularly low-fat milk and yogurt, was associated with reduced risk of incident MetS, suggesting the capability of low-fat dairy products in the primary prevention of MetS in children and adolescents.

Inequalities in food consumption the Colombian households: Results from the National Survey of Nutritional Status

Introduction: adverse socioeconomic conditions may cause food intake characterized by inequality that derives in malnutrition increases. Objective. To identify inequalities in food consumption among the Colombian population according to socioeconomic status and the food security classification forhouseholds. Methods. the data were obtained from the 2005 National Survey of Nutritional Status, and the analysis used the first 24-hour recall n=39,413  Colombians. The statistical analysis took into account descriptive statistics and 95% confidence intervals. A multivariate analysis was performed through multinomial logistic regression models, with each of the food groups as a dependent variable. Finally, a latent class analysis was performed to understand the heterogeneity of the inequalities in food consumption in the households. Results. Low-socioeconomic status households showed higherconsumption of cereals, tubers and plantains, non-alcoholic beverages, and fats. I contrast, higher socioeconomic status households showed higher consumption of dairy products, fruit, vegetables, and sugars/sweets. The food security classification found that food-secure households had a higherconsumption of meat, dairy, vegetables, fruit, and sugars/sweets. Households classified as food-insecure showed a higher consumption of cereals, tubers and plantains, and non-alcoholic beverages. The consumption of tubers and plantains showed a clear social gradient, in higher socioeconomic status there was lower consumption probability of those products. Conclusion. There are inequalities in food consumption in Colombia according to socioeconomic status and the food security classification; therefore, people and families with the most unfavorable socioeconomic status have diets with less nutritional value.

Sustainable and healthy diets: Synergies and trade‐offs in Switzerland

AbstractFood systems have increasingly strong impacts on the environment, and they influence our human well‐being. In Switzerland, food consumption accounts for one‐third of the environmental impact caused by total final consumption. At the same time, non‐communicable diseases have been linked to a number of dietary aspects. In Switzerland, all non‐communicable diseases together are responsible for 80% of total public health care costs annually. Current assessments that link environmental sustainability and human health‐oriented diets for Switzerland lack a transparent representation of the dynamic effects caused by large‐scale conversions of the food system. In this study, therefore, a system dynamics model is employed to investigate intended and unintended changes on the food system structure and on environmental impacts. Several human health‐oriented scenarios are implemented and tested with different production‐ and consumption‐side intervention strategies. Because all scenarios assuming an increase in the consumption of plant‐based products also involve higher consumption of dairy products, consequences for bovine meat need to be considered. The biological link between milk and bovine meat production leads to an unintended increase in bovine meat production as milk production increases. Intervention strategies at the consumption level thus need to be accompanied by intervention strategies at the agricultural production level. Similarly, intervention strategies that aim at improving health outcomes at the production level need to be accompanied by strategies that affect diets and thus consumption preferences. Avoiding instances of policy resistance requires integrated policy design and implementation across agriculture, the environment and human health. This integration is a challenge for farmers, the food industry and consumers alike.

1544-P: Associations between Dietary Factors and Serum Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Bioactivity as a Biomarker of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Prediabetic Population

Aim: Many studies suggest that the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is a risk factor of type 2 diabetes. The relationship between dietary factors and POPs has been explored recently. POPs are fat-soluble substances that accumulate through the consumption of high fat diets, fish, meat and dairy products. Vegetables and fruits are known to prevent the accumulation of POPs. We aimed to examine the associations between dietary factors and serum cumulative bioactivity of AhR ligand mixture (AhRB) as a biomarker of POPs in subjects at high risk for type 2 diabetes. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 304 prediabetic subjects using the Korea National Diabetes Program cohort data. AhRB was divided into quartiles according to the concentrations. (Q1 (the lowest quartile): (Q1 (the lowest quartile): 1.7±0.3, Q2: 2.4±0.2, Q3:3.1±0.2, Q4 (the highest quartile): 3.9±0.2). Socio-demographic, health related-behaviors, and dietary factors were assessed. Dietary factors were collected from the 3-day dietary records and food frequency questionnaire. Results: Starting with the Q1 of AhRB, adjusted mean concentrations of serum triglycerides were 147.06±12.97, 151.30±12.64, 125.80±13.19 and 166.78±13.76 mg/dL for ascending quartiles, respectively (P&amp;lt; 0.05). In the 3Q of AhRB, the highest consumption of sugars (Q3: 13.6±11.6g, P=0.016) and dairy products (Q3: 117.0±126.6g, P=0.032) were shown compared to those of other three groups. On multiple linear regression analysis, high consumption of dairy products (P&amp;lt; 0.05) and fried fish with oil (P &amp;lt; 0.05) were significantly positive associated with serum AhRB concentration after adjusting covariates. Conclusion: This study found an association between dietary factors and AhRB level, however, further longitudinal studies are needed to clarify the effects of these dietary factors on POP levels. 10-Year Trends in Dietary Intakes in the High- and Low-Risk Areas for Esophageal Cancer: A Population-Based Ecological Study in Northern Iran.

BACKGROUND We assessed dietary intakes in the high- and low-risk areas for esophageal cancer (EC) in Golestan province, Northern Iran. METHODS Considering the EC rates, Golestan province was divided into high- and low-risk regions. Data on households’ food consumption were obtained from the Statistical Center of Iran. We used multivariable logistic regression to assess the relationships between consumption of main food and EC risk. Adjusted odds ratios (aOR) were calculated. Joint point program was used for time trend analysis and average annual percent changes (AAPC) were reported. RESULTS Overall, 11910 households were recruited during 2006-2015. 4710 (39.5%) households were enrolled from the high-risk region. There were significant positive relationships between high consumption of sweets (aOR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.24-2.10), oil/fat (aOR = 1.36; 95% CI: 1.04-1.79), and red meat (aOR = 1.33; 95% CI: 1.07-1.65) with EC risk. We found significant negative relationships between high consumption of dairy products (aOR = 0.62; 95% CI: 0.46-0.82), vegetables (aOR = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.50-0.87) and fruit (aOR = 0.72; 95% CI: 0.55-0.95) with the risk of EC. Time trend analysis showed a significant increasing trend in the proportions of households with low consumption of vegetables (AAPC = 4.71, p = 0.01) and dairy products (AAPC = 5.26, p = 0.02) in the low-risk region for EC. CONCLUSION Dietary intakes may be important etiological factors for EC in Northern Iran. Further studies are warranted to assess the role of dietary factors in this high-risk population.

Effects of dairy products consumption on inflammatory biomarkers among adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

AimsThis study aimed to summarize earlier studies on the effects of dairy consumption on inflammatory biomarkers in adults and to quantify these effects through meta-analysis. Data synthesisA comprehensive search of all relevant articles, published up to December 2019 indexed in PubMed, ISI (Institute for Scientific Information), EmBase, Scopus, and Google Scholar was done using relevant keywords. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examined the effect of dairy products consumption, compared with low or no dairy intake, on inflammatory biomarkers in adults were included. Overall, 11 RCTs with 663 participants were included in this meta-analysis. We found that high consumption of dairy products, compared with low or no dairy intake, might significantly reduce CRP [weighed mean difference (WMD): −0.24 mg/L; 95% CI, −0.35, −0.14], TNF-α (WMD:- 0.66 pg/mL; 95% CI, −1.23, −0.09), IL-6 (WMD: −0.74 pg/mL; 95% CI, −1.36, −0.12), and MCP concentrations (WMD: −25.58 pg/mL; 95% CI, −50.31, −0.86). However, when the analyses were confined to cross-over trials, no such beneficial effects of dairy intake on inflammation were observed. In addition, high dairy intake might result in increased adiponectin levels (WMD: 2.42 μg/mL; 95% CI, 0.17, 4.66). No significant effect of dairy consumption on serum leptin (WMD: −0.32 ng/mL; 95% CI, −3.30, 2.65), ICAM-1 (WMD: −3.38 ng/ml; 95% CI, −15.57, 8.96) and VCAM-1 (WMD: 3.1 ng/mL; 95% CI, −21.38, 27.58) levels was observed. ConclusionsIn summary, the current meta-analysis indicated that dairy intake might improve several inflammatory biomarkers in adults. In most subgroups without heterogeneity, effects tended to be null. Study design and participants’ age were the main sources of heterogeneity. More research, with a particular focus on fat content of dairy foods, is recommended.
