Exploring Drivers of Historic Mercury Trends in Beluga Whales Using an Ecosystem Modeling Approach.

While mercury occurs naturally in the environment, human activity has significantly disturbed its biogeochemical cycle. Inorganic mercury entering aquatic systems can be transformed into methylmercury, a strong neurotoxicant that builds up in organisms and affects ecosystem and public health. In the Arctic, top predators such as beluga whales, an ecologically and culturally significant species for many Inuit communities, can contain high concentrations of methylmercury. Historical mercury concentrations in beluga in the western Canadian Arctic's Beaufort Sea cannot be explained by mercury emission trends alone; in addition, they could potentially be driven by climate change impacts, such as rising temperatures and sea ice melt. These changes can affect mercury bioaccumulation through different pathways, including ecological and mercury transport processes. In this study, we explore key drivers of mercury bioaccumulation in the Beaufort Sea beluga population using Ecopath with Ecosim, an ecosystem modeling approach, and scenarios of environmental change informed by Western Science and Inuvialuit Knowledge. Comparing the effect of historical sea ice cover, sea surface temperature, and freshwater discharge time series, modeling suggests that the timing of historical increases and decreases in beluga methylmercury concentrations can be better explained by the resulting changes to ecosystem productivity rather than by those to mercury inputs and that all three environmental drivers could partially explain the decrease in mercury concentrations in beluga after the mid-1990s. This work highlights the value of multiple knowledge systems and exploratory modeling methods in understanding environmental change and contaminant cycling. Future work building on this research could inform climate change adaptation efforts and inform management decisions in the region.

Framing Effects on Attitudes and Intentions Toward Shark Meat Consumption in Lima, Peru

Peru has one of the major shark fisheries in the world. Moreover, shark meat consumption is popular and the main commercially exploited species are considered threatened. Recent studies have found high mislabeling rates and high concentrations of methylmercury in shark meat. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of different framing messages in persuading fish consumers to avoid shark meat consumption and promote sustainable fish (“popular fish”) consumption. Specifically: To what extent do intrinsic and extrinsic risk messages differ in terms of deterring the intention to eat shark meat and promoting the consumption of popular fish, in the presence or absence of an efficacy message about mislabeling of shark meat? The three message frames were: intrinsic (sharks have mercury), extrinsic (sharks are threatened), and efficacy (sharks are mislabeled). The experiment had a factorial design of 2 × 2 × 2 (present vs. absent for each message). Participants (n = 285), surveyed through an online questionnaire, were assigned to one of eight experimental conditions. Participants then completed a survey regarding their intentions and attitudes toward shark meat and popular fish consumption. Attitudes and intentions toward consuming shark meat were discouraged in all experimental conditions. Moreover, the mislabeling message did not reduce participants' perceived response efficacy (how effective the recommendations for dealing with the problem are), but enhanced it. This study suggests that not all consumers' attitudes about sharks are negative or that a negative attitude does not affect shark consumption in an adverse way. More research targeting different audiences is needed to determine the optimal approach for promoting sustainable seafood that is also healthy for consumers.

Results of a controlled field experiment to assess the use of tree tissue concentrations as bioindicators of air Hg

The utility of trees as bioindicators of atmospheric mercury (Hg) depends upon how accurately tree tissue concentrations reflect air-Hg concentrations at a given location and time. The relationship between air-Hg, and Hg concentration in tree tissues was investigated using potted Pinus nigra (Austrian pine) saplings 6 to 7 years in age moved from a tree farm in Oregon, USA, to three locations with different weather, two with different air total Hg (THg) concentrations, all with different predominant gaseous oxidized Hg chemistry, and one being impacted by the marine boundary layer. An aqueous Hg bromide root spike showed no significant effect on above ground tissue concentration. Over two growing seasons, needles, bark, and tree rings were sampled and analyzed for THg concentrations to compare with those collected when the trees originally arrived in Reno, NV (control) versus that measured in the new locations. Overall, foliar Hg concentrations increased significantly at all new locations relative to the control. Spring sample concentrations were lower than fall for foliage at two locations, indicating resorption of Hg along with nutrients. All trees had higher mean Hg concentrations in the outermost tree rings relative to the control, consistent with increased air total Hg concentrations and changing air chemistry. Higher concentrations were measured in the outer bark of trees where ambient GOM concentrations were highest. Higher inner bark concentrations were correlated with the more humid location where high methylmercury concentrations have been measured in fog. Results demonstrated that Pinus nigra tissues are effective biomonitors for air Hg exposures and that translocation from leaves to rings via the phloem is an important pathway for sequestration in plant tissue. We also show that plants are active assimilators of atmospheric Hg, and as such, local environmental conditions influence ring, bark, and foliage concentrations. The latter has important implications for understanding tissue Hg concentrations, and supports the use of tree ring Hg concentrations as archives.

Effects of two-hour exposure to environmental and high concentrations of methylmercury on the transcriptome of the macrophyte Elodea nuttallii

The effects of two methylmercury (CH3Hg+, MeHg) concentrations, representative of environmental level and extreme contamination, were investigated on the macrophyte Elodea nuttallii during a 2h-exposure combining transcriptomic (RNA-Seq), physiological endpoints (pigment contents, activity of anti-oxidative stress enzymes) and bioaccumulation. Exposure to MeHg induced the up- and down-regulation of numerous genes (4389 and 16853 for 10ngL−1 and 10μgL−1 MeHg exposure, respectively) involved in sugar, amino acid and secondary metabolism (e.g. cinnamic acid, flavonoids) at both concentrations. Genes coding for photosynthesis, membrane integrity, metal homeostasis, water transport and anti-oxidative enzymes were additionally up- and down-regulated at the higher concentration. At the physiological level, exposure to both MeHg concentrations resulted in a strong increase of anthocyanin content in shoots. Chlorophyll content and antioxidant enzyme activities were unchanged. The data suggest that the macrophyte was able to efficiently cope with the stress resulting from MeHg exposure, possibly by using anthocyanin as anti-oxidant and S-rich amino acids (such as cysteine and methionine) as chelators. Transcriptomics analysis enabled gaining novel insights on molecular effects of MeHg in primary producers, which are one of the main entry pathway of hazardous MeHg in aquatic food webs.

Molecular composition of organic matter controls methylmercury formation in boreal lakes

A detailed understanding of the formation of the potent neurotoxic methylmercury is needed to explain the large observed variability in methylmercury levels in aquatic systems. While it is known that organic matter interacts strongly with mercury, the role of organic matter composition in the formation of methylmercury in aquatic systems remains poorly understood. Here we show that phytoplankton-derived organic compounds enhance mercury methylation rates in boreal lake sediments through an overall increase of bacterial activity. Accordingly, in situ mercury methylation defines methylmercury levels in lake sediments strongly influenced by planktonic blooms. In contrast, sediments dominated by terrigenous organic matter inputs have far lower methylation rates but higher concentrations of methylmercury, suggesting that methylmercury was formed in the catchment and imported into lakes. Our findings demonstrate that the origin and molecular composition of organic matter are critical parameters to understand and predict methylmercury formation and accumulation in boreal lake sediments.

The influence of inundation and lake morphometry on the dynamics of mercury in the water and plankton in an Amazon floodplain lake

Seasonal flooding changes chemical and morphometric characteristics of the tropical floodplain lakes, affecting stratification which can influence mercury dynamics. We investigate the influence of flooding on the mercury dynamics in an Amazon floodplain lake. Three points on the lake, the Solimoes River, and the connecting channel to the river were sampled along the annual flood pulse. During high-water, the lake was deep (12.7 m, on average) and the area farthest from the river was stratified with low oxygen and high methylmercury concentrations ([MeHg]) at depths below 7 m (0.37 ng l−1, on average). The two sites closest to the river were destratified and the [MeHg] was lower (0.077 ng l−1, on average along all depths). At low-water, the lake was shallower (3 m, on average) and destratified, with higher oxygen concentrations, and no difference in [MeHg] along the water column at all lake sites. Independent of season, the [MeHg] in the connecting channel was higher than those in the river. The [MeHg] in phytoplankton varied in response to changes in biomass, showing a biodilution effect. Variations in lake morphometry controlled the stratification and [MeHg] in the lake during the high-water. Floodplain lakes export hypolimnetic MeHg to their associated rivers during high-water.

Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) as A Sentinel for Exposure to Mercury in Humans: Closing the Loop.

Mercury (Hg) is a ubiquitous global contaminant with important public health implications. Mercury is released from a variety of anthropogenic, industrial processes, enters the earth's atmosphere and is re-deposited onto the earth’s surface in rainfall. Much of this Hg enters the oceans which cover the majority of the earth’s surface. In the marine environment, inorganic Hg is converted to the most toxic form of the element, methylmercury, and biomagnified through the trophic levels of the food web. The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is the apex predator in many estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Due to their long life span and trophic position, bottlenose dolphins bioaccumulate high concentrations of contaminants including Hg, thus making them an important sentinel species for ecosystem and public health. Bottlenose dolphins in Florida bioaccumulate high concentrations of Hg in their blood, skin and internal organs. The concentrations of Hg in blood and skin of bottlenose dolphins of the Indian River Lagoon, FL (IRL) are among the highest reported world-wide. In previous studies, we demonstrated associations between concentrations of total Hg in the blood and skin of IRL dolphins and markers of endocrine, renal, hepatic, hematologic and immune system dysfunction. The predominant manifestation of exposure to mercury in humans is neurotoxicity. During the 1950s and 1960s, residents of Minamata bay, Japan were exposed to high concentrations of methyl mercury as the result of ingestion of fish and shellfish that had become contaminated in this infamous environmental disaster. Affected adults had severe motor and sensory abnormalities often leading to death. Methyl mercury crosses the placenta during pregnancy. Children exposed in utero were born with multiple congenital anomalies and also suffered from neurologic disorders. Significantly, local cats that consumed Hg contaminated fish developed severe signs of neurotoxicity which led to their subsequent description as the “dancing cats of Minamata bay”. Unfortunately, the cause of these strange manifestations in cats was not recognized in time to prevent hundreds of additional cases from occurring. More recent studies have shown that exposure to mercury as a result of seafood consumption during pregnancy may result in multiple cognitive and neurodevelopmental effects in children. The levels of mercury found in bottlenose dolphins and the health effects we identified alerted us to the possibility of an important public health hazard. The IRL occupies 40 percent of the east coast of Florida and is bordered by counties with approximately 2.5 million human inhabitants. Therefore, we hypothesized that local inhabitants in communities bordering the IRL could be at risk of exposure to Hg from the consumption of fish and shellfish. We measured hair Hg in 135 local residents and found a mean concentration of 1.53 µg/g which was higher than that from previous studies of sport fishermen and coastal residents in other states. Over 50% of participants had a hair Hg concentration which exceeded the U.S. EPA exposure guideline. Hair Hg concentration was directly related to the frequency of seafood consumption and to the proportion of fish and shellfish obtained from local recreational sources. This study clearly exemplifies the importance of an animal sentinel in identifying a public health hazard and is virtually unique in “closing the loop” between animal and human health.

Two-Dimensional Algal Collection and Assembly by Combining AC-Dielectrophoresis with Fluorescence Detection for Contaminant-Induced Oxidative Stress Sensing.

An alternative current (AC) dielectrophoretic lab-on-chip setup was evaluated as a rapid tool of capture and assembly of microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in two-dimensional (2D) close-packed arrays. An electric field of 100 V·cm−1, 100 Hz applied for 30 min was found optimal to collect and assemble the algae into single-layer structures of closely packed cells without inducing cellular oxidative stress. Combined with oxidative stress specific staining and fluorescence microscopy detection, the capability of using the 2D whole-cell assembly on-chip to follow the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress during short-term exposure to several environmental contaminants, including mercury, methylmercury, copper, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs), and diuron was explored. The results showed significant increase of the cellular ROS when C. reinhardtii was exposed to high concentrations of methylmercury, CuO-NPs, and 10−5 M Cu. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of combining AC-dielectrophoretically assembled two-dimensional algal structures with cell metabolic analysis using fluorescence staining, as a rapid analytical tool for probing the effect of contaminants in highly impacted environment.

Local country food sources of methylmercury, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids in Nunavik, Northern Quebec

Country foods are central to Inuit culture and replete in selenium (Se) and long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n−3 PUFA). However, some marine country foods bioaccumulate high concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg). Se and n−3 are associated with several health benefits in Nunavik, Northern Quebec, but, recent studies show that prenatal MeHg exposure is associated with visual, cognitive and behavioral deficit later in childhood.The study objectives are to identify contemporary country food sources of MeHg, Se and long-chain n−3 PUFA in Nunavik, particularly among childbearing-age women, taking into account regional differences in consumption profiles. The contribution of different country foods to daily MeHg, Se, long-chain n−3 PUFA intake (μg/kg body weight/day) was estimated using: (i) country food consumption and blood biomarkers data from the 2004 Nunavik Health Survey (387 women, 315 men), and (ii) data on MeHg, Se, long-chain n−3 PUFA concentrations found in Nunavik wildlife species.In the region where most traditional beluga hunting takes place in Nunavik, the prevalence of at-risk blood Hg (≥8μg/L) in childbearing-age women was 78.4%. While most country foods presently consumed contain low MeHg, beluga meat, not a staple of the Inuit diet, is the most important contributor to MeHg: up to two-thirds of MeHg intake in the beluga-hunting region (0.66 of MeHg intake) and to about one-third in other regions. In contrast, seal liver and beluga mattaaq – beluga skin and blubber – only mildly contributed to MeHg (between 0.06 and 0.15 of MeHg intake), depending on the region. Beluga mattaaq also highly contributed to Se intake (0.30 of Se intake). Arctic char, beluga blubber and mattaaq, and seal blubber contributed to most long-chain n−3 PUFA intake.This study highlights the importance of considering interconnections between local ecosystems and dietary habits to develop recommendations and interventions promoting country foods' benefits, while minimizing the risk of MeHg from beluga meat, especially for childbearing-age women.

Bioaccumulation of Methylmercury in Neovison vison (Schreber, 1777) Populations of the Susquehanna River Valley

ABSTRACT Being the longest non-navigable river on the eastern coast of the United States, the Susquehanna River and the surrounding areas support a vast number of plants, animals, and other organisms, creating a vast and complex food web within a large and biodiverse ecosystem. One of the most prominent and essential organisms within this food web is the American mink (Neovison vison). In recent years, studies have been conducted to determine the level of biomagnification of methylmercury in terrestrial organisms that reside at higher trophic levels. This particular study has found that American mink populations residing in the Susquehanna River Valley of Pennsylvania are reliable indicators of bioaccumulation of methylmercury due to their role as piscivorous carnivores residing at a high trophic level of the terrestrial food web. Analysis of methylmercury concentrations of 166 hair samples from collected mink specimens yielded 111 samples with concentrations in excess of the toxicity threshold of 1 mg kg-1 body weight. Furthermore, our data suggest that although mercury contamination is a global concern, geographical location of mercury producers, such as coal-burning power plants, and the relationship to the location of mink populations may be a large factor in bioaccumulation of mercury. In particular, samples taken from mink specimens within habitats in the northeastern region of Pennsylvania contained higher concentrations of methylmercury as well as a larger quantity of samples containing concentrations higher than the toxicity threshold than in samples from other regions of the state.

The Great Salt Lake's monimolimnion and its importance for mercury bioaccumulation in brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana)

The Great Salt Lake (Utah) is divided by a railroad causeway that causes the lake's south arm to be chemically stratified, when saltier, denser water from the north underflows into the south, creating an anoxic, sulfide‐rich deep brine layer that accumulates high levels of total mercury (Hg; 59 ng L−1) and methylmercury (33 ng L−1). Approximately 40% of this water is advected into the upper mixed layer annually. High mercury levels of brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) in the mixed layer are passed to waterfowl, creating a human health hazard. We hypothesized that high mercury levels in Artemia are due to exposure when mercury is mixed into the upper layer or when they feed on mercury‐rich organic matter in the chemocline separating the two layers. Surprisingly, in aquaria growth experiments with 0%, 10%, or 25% deep brine water, Artemia exposed to progressively higher concentrations of mercury had significantly less mercury. In column experiments simulating a lake with a deep brine layer, Artemia grazed in the chemocline, but they also had lower mercury concentrations than Artemia in controls without a deep brine layer. This was due to detrital dilution of the mercury because the deep brine layer has very high particulate organic carbon (POC; 11.0 mg C L−1), which reduced the Hg : POC ratio of food 7‐fold compared to that in the overlying mixed layer. Consequently, although Artemia are exposed to the high concentrations of methylmercury generated in the deep layer, the detrimental effect is partially ameliorated by detrital dilution of the mercury.

Development and application of a regional-scale atmospheric mercury model based on WRF/Chem: a Mediterranean area investigation

The emission, transport, deposition and eventual fate of mercury (Hg) in the Mediterranean area has been studied using a modified version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF/Chem). This model version has been developed specifically with the aim to simulate the atmospheric processes determining atmospheric Hg emissions, concentrations and deposition online at high spatial resolution. For this purpose, the gas phase chemistry of Hg and a parametrised representation of atmospheric Hg aqueous chemistry have been added to the regional acid deposition model version 2 chemical mechanism in WRF/Chem. Anthropogenic mercury emissions from the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme included in the emissions preprocessor, mercury evasion from the sea surface and Hg released from biomass burning have also been included. Dry and wet deposition processes for Hg have been implemented. The model has been tested for the whole of 2009 using measurements of total gaseous mercury from the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme monitoring network. Speciated measurement data of atmospheric elemental Hg, gaseous oxidised Hg and Hg associated with particulate matter, from a Mediterranean oceanographic campaign (June 2009), has permitted the model's ability to simulate the atmospheric redox chemistry of Hg to be assessed. The model results highlight the importance of both the boundary conditions employed and the accuracy of the mercury speciation in the emission database. The model has permitted the reevaluation of the deposition to, and the emission from, the Mediterranean Sea. In light of the well-known high concentrations of methylmercury in a number of Mediterranean fish species, this information is important in establishing the mass balance of Hg for the Mediterranean Sea. The model results support the idea that the Mediterranean Sea is a net source of Hg to the atmosphere and suggest that the net flux is ≈30 Mg year(-1) of elemental Hg.

Isolation and characterization of bacteria from mercury contaminated sites in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and assessment of methylmercury removal capability of a Pseudomonas putida V1 strain

Methylmercury (MeHg) is one of the most dangerous heavy metal for living organisms that may be found in environment. Given the crescent industrialization of Brazil and considering that mercury is a residue of several industrial processes, there is an increasing need to encounter and develop remediation approaches of mercury contaminated sites. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize methylmercury resistant bacteria from soils and sludge sewage from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Sixteen bacteria were isolated from these contaminated sites and some isolates were highly resistant to methylmercury (>8.7μM). All the isolates were identified by 16S rDNA. Pseudomonas putida V1 was able to volatilize approximately 90% of methylmercury added to growth media and to resist to copper, lead, nickel, chromate, zinc, cobalt, manganese and barium. In the presence of high concentrations of methylmercury (12μM), cell growth was limited, but P. putida V1 was still able to remove up to 29% of this compound from culture medium. This bacterium removed an average of 77% of methylmercury from culture medium with pH in the range 4.0-6.0. In addition, methylmercury was efficiently removed (>80%) in temperature of 21-25°C. Polymerase chain reactions indicated the presence of merA but not merB in P. putida V1. The growth and ability of P. putida V1 to remove methylmercury in a wide range of pH (4.0 and 8.0) and temperature (10-35°C), its tolerance to other heavy metals and ability to grow in the presence of up to 11.5μM of methylmercury, suggest this strain as a new potential resource for degrading methylmercury contaminated sites.

Specific ultra-violet absorbance as an indicator of mercury sources in an Adirondack River basin

The Adirondack region of New York has been identified as a hot spot where high methylmercury concentrations are found in surface waters and biota, yet mercury (Hg) concentrations vary widely in this region. We collected stream and groundwater samples for Hg and organic carbon analyses across the upper Hudson River, a 493 km2 basin in the central Adirondacks to evaluate and model the sources of variation in filtered total Hg (FTHg) concentrations. Variability in FTHg concentrations during the growing seasons (May–Oct) of 2007–2009 in Fishing Brook, a 66-km2 sub-basin, was better explained by specific ultra-violet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA254), a measure of organic carbon aromaticity, than by dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, a commonly used Hg indicator. SUVA254 was a stronger predictor of FTHg concentrations during the growing season than during the dormant season. Multiple linear regression models that included SUVA254 values and DOC concentrations could explain 75 % of the variation in FTHg concentrations on an annual basis and 84 % during the growing season. A multiple linear regression landscape modeling approach applied to 27 synoptic sites across the upper Hudson basin found that higher SUVA254 values are associated with gentler slopes, and greater riparian area, and lower SUVA254 values are associated with an increasing influence of open water. We hypothesize that the strong Hg–SUVA254 relation in this basin reflects distinct patterns of FTHg and SUVA254 that are characteristic of source areas that control the mobilization of Hg to surface waters, and that the seasonal influence of these source areas varies in this heterogeneous basin landscape.

Anthropogenic influences on the input and biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and mercury in Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA

Despite the ecological and economic importance of Great Salt Lake (GSL), little is known about the input and biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and trace elements in the lake. In response to increasing public concern regarding anthropogenic inputs to the GSL ecosystem, the US Geological Survey (USGS) and US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) initiated coordinated studies to quantify and evaluate the significance of nutrient and Hg inputs into GSL. A 6‰ decrease in δ15N observed in brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) samples collected from GSL during summer time periods is likely due to the consumption of cyanobacteria produced in freshwater bays entering the lake. Supporting data collected from the outflow of Farmington Bay indicates decreasing trends in δ15N in particulate organic matter (POM) during the mid-summer time period, reflective of increasing proportions of cyanobacteria in algae exported to GSL on a seasonal basis. The C:N molar ratio of POM in outflow from Farmington Bay decreases during the summer period, supportive of the increased activity of N fixation indicated by decreasing δ15N in brine shrimp and POM. Although N fixation is only taking place in the relatively freshwater inflows to GSL, data indicate that influx of fresh water influences large areas of the lake. Separation of GSL into two distinct hydrologic and geochemical systems from the construction of a railroad causeway in the late 1950s has created a persistent and widespread anoxic layer in the southern part of GSL. This anoxic layer, referred to as the deep brine layer (DBL), has high rates of SO42- reduction, likely increasing the Hg methylation capacity. High concentrations of methyl mercury (CH3Hg) (median concentration = 24 ng/L) were observed in the DBL with a significant proportion (31–60%) of total Hg in the CH3Hg form. Hydroacoustic and sediment-trap evidence indicate that turbulence introduced by internal waves generated during sustained wind events can temporarily mix the elevated CH3Hg concentrations in the DBL with the more biologically active upper brine layer (UBL). Brine shrimp collected during the summer/fall time periods contained elevated Hg concentrations (median concentration = 0.34 mg/kg, dry weight (dw)) relative to samples collected during the spring (median concentration < 0.2 mg/kg, dw). Higher Hg in brine shrimp during the summer and fall may reflect the higher proportion of adult brine shrimp during this time period, resulting in an increased time for bioaccumulation of Hg. Eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis) consume brine shrimp from GSL during the fall molting period. Median Hg concentrations in eared grebe livers increased by almost three times during the 3–5 month fall molting period. Selected duck species utilizing GSL have consistently exceeded the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) screening level for Hg (0.3 mg/kg Hg wet weight), resulting in the issuance of warnings against unlimited human consumption of breast muscle tissue.

In vitro effects of methylmercury on ascidian (Styela plicata) immunocyte responses

AbstractThis study shows that high methylmercury concentrations are cytotoxic for Styela plicata hemocytes, whereas sublethal concentrations affect immunocyte responses. Moreover, hemocytes exposed to the xenobiotic present a significantly enhanced phenoloxidase activity as revealed in the hemocyte lysate supernatant compared with the control. Although the cytotoxic activity of S. plicata hemocytes toward rabbit erythrocytes is a PO‐dependent cell‐target reaction due to quinone products, it was significantly decreased by suitable methylmercury concentrations in the medium. The same xenobiotic concentrations decreased the hemocyte phagocytic activity toward yeast. In both the responses cell‐target contacts could be affected by methylmercury, whereas the releasing capacity appeared to be unchanged, as indicated by hemocyte PO‐release in the medium. Finally, changes in hemocyte shape and spreading capacity were shown. On the basis of the present results, Styela plicata hemocyte responses could be an additional immunotoxicology test using a microplate method that reveals cell morphological changes and spreading capacity. Time Trends of Methylmercury in Walleye in Northern Wisconsin: A Hierarchical Bayesian Analysis

Methylmercury data from walleye fillets collected by multiple agencies from northern Wisconsin lakes from 1982 to 2005 were examined for regional time trends. Hierarchical Bayesian methods were used to model dependencies and provide probability statements for parameters pertaining to individual lakes and the region as a whole. A missing data mechanism allowed the sex of the fish to be included as a predictor since the sexes grow at different rates. A slight regional decrease in methylmercury of 0.60% annually was found, consistent with declining atmospheric mercury deposition. Methylmercury was estimated to have decreased in 77% of the 420 lakes from which walleye were sampled, although uncertainty regarding time trends was greater for most individual lakes than for the region as a whole. Methylmercury in walleye varied widely from lake to lake, but generally accumulated in the fish at similar rates by length after accounting for differences in sex. Slower-growing male walleye had higher methylmercury concentrations than females for a given length, and skin-on fillets were 16% lower in methylmercury than skin-off fillets.

Benefit and Risk of Fish Consumption: Bio-Monitoring of Methylmercury Concentrations and Omega 3 Fatty Acid Contents Related to Habitual Fish Intake of French Pregnant Women

P-417 Abstract: Fish is a good source of important nutrients which are related to nutritional benefits. Fish is a predominant source of polyunsaturated fatty acids and is low in saturated fatty acids. It is well-known that omega-3 fatty acids appear to confer multiple human health benefit like reduction of depressive symptoms. Accumulating evidence suggest an association between a low omega-3 fatty acids status after pregnancy and the occurrence of postpartum depression. Nevertheless, due to environmental pollution, some fish species may contain high level of heavy metals and in particular of methylmercury. During perinatal period, pregnant women who consumed contaminated fish may be exposed to high concentrations of methylmercury that may contribute to subtle alterations of central nervous system in unborn baby and young children. The objective of our study is a) to evaluate the omega 3 fatty acid status of French pregnant women who consumed fish and seafood products and b) to examine the methylmercury exposure related to the consumption of fish and seafood of French pregnant women. One hundred and fifty pregnant women were recruited in this project. This research has started in October 2005 and the first results will be available in September 2006. As indicators of phospholipids contents, we used the phospholipids contents of cheek cells and red blood cells membrane. Cheek mucosal cells and red blood cells, obtained at the first and at the last trimester during pregnancy, were analyzed using gas chromatography. In addition, we used methylmercury concentration in hair as indicator of methylmercury exposure during pregnancy. Maternal hair sample were obtained at the first and at the last trimester during pregnancy and analyzed using flow-injection cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. Moreover, habitual fish intake of the pregnant women was assessed using food frequency questionnaire including detailed information about consumption of different fish species and seafood (fresh, canned, smoked and cooked). The finality of this study was to examine the relationships between phospholipids contents, methylmercury and habitual fish intake of French pregnant women. To conclude, this clinical study could be a useful tool to highlight the discussion concerning the benefit versus risk ratio of fish consumption in concerned population.

Relationship Between Wetlands and Mercury in Brook Trout

The purpose of this study was to determine if wetlands influence mercury concentrations in brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), benthic macroinvertebrates, and stream water. On September 26, 2005, water samples, benthic macroinvertebrates, and brook trout were collected from four streams in western Maryland under low-flow conditions. Water samples were also collected in these four streams under high-flow conditions in January 2006. The watersheds of Blue Lick and Monroe Run did not contain wetlands, but the watersheds of the Upper Savage River (3% of upstream area) and Little Savage River (7% of upstream area) contained wetlands. We found significantly (p = 0.05) higher average total mercury concentration in brook trout from Little Savage River (129 +/- 54 ng g(-1)); intermediate concentrations (66 +/- 19 ng g(-1)) in brook trout from Upper Savage River; and lowest concentrations in brook trout from Blue Lick (28 +/- 11 ng g(-1)) and Monroe Run (23 +/- 19 ng g(-1)). Brook trout in all streams accumulated mercury at the same rate over their lifetimes, but the youngest fish had significantly different mercury concentrations (Little Savage > Upper Savage > Blue Lick = Monroe Run), which may be due to differences in mercury concentrations in the eggs or food for the fry. Mercury concentrations in brook trout were not consistent with mercury concentrations in stream water and benthic macroinvertebrates. The Little Savage River had significantly higher total and methylmercury concentrations in stream water, but mercury concentrations in the other streams and in the benthic macroinvertebrates were not significantly different among streams. The unusually high methylmercury concentrations (0.5 to 2.1 ng L(-1)) in the Little Savage River may have been caused by production of methylmercury in the pools. The relatively low methylmercury concentrations in the Upper Savage River may be caused by a mercury concentration gradient downstream of the wetland.

Regeneration of photoreceptor organs in freshwater planarians at different levels of accumulation of natural methylmercury compounds

The effects of natural methylmercury compounds on regeneration of photoreceptor organs were studied in three freshwater planarians: Polycelis tenuis, Dugesia lugubris, and D. tigrina. Accumulation of methyl mercury in the planarian body suppressed regeneration of P. tenuis with numerous photoreceptor organs to a greater extent than in two other planarians that have only two eyes. High methyl mercury concentrations inhibited the restoration of photoreceptor organs in asexual and sexual D. tigrina races.
