Ultrahigh Capacitive Energy Storage in a Heterogeneous Nanolayered Composite

AbstractFerroelectric polymers with robust electrical polarization have been extensively investigated for capacitive energy storage. However, their inherent ferroelectric hysteresis loss limits the discharged energy density and compromises energy efficiency. Here, a heterogeneous nanolayered composite of ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF‐TrFE)) and Al2O3 is presented, which effectively mitigates ferroelectric hysteresis loss while maintaining high polarization and enhanced breakdown strength. Phase‐field simulations indicate that the polarization behaviors of the heterogeneous layered structure are jointly influenced by the thickness and dielectric constant of each component, which balances the electrical energy and Landau energy within the heterogeneous system. Guided by the theoretical simulations, optimized polarization behaviors are achieved with a significant reduction in remnant polarization and ferroelectric loss in the P(VDF‐TrFE)/Al2O3 composites through careful control of P(VDF‐TrFE) thickness at nanometer scale. Moreover, the presence of multiple interfaces in the layered composites leads to a remarkable enhancement in polarization and breakdown strength. Consequently, an ultrahigh energy density of about 108 J cm−3 is achieved with a high charge–discharge efficiency of exceeding 80%. This work not only presents a straightforward approach to modify the polarization behaviors of ferroelectric polymers but also demonstrates a promising strategy for developing high‐energy‐density polymer nanocomposites.

Enhanced energy storage density and efficiency of nanocomposite dielectrics by modifying polymer matrix and aminated boron nitride nanosheet

Polymers and fillers with high dielectric constant (εr), charge-discharge efficiency (η) and breakdown strength (Eb) are fundamental to the development of nanocomposite dielectrics for superior energy storage capabilities. Herein, high-εr P(VDF-TrFE) is used to prepare the P(VDF-TrFE)-g-PMMA matrix with elevated εr and η, then the P(VDF-TrFE)-g-PMMA/BNNS-NH2 nanocomposites with uniformly oriented distribution of h-BN is obtained by a squeegee casting process using amino-boron nitride (BNNS-NH2) as fillers. Thanks to the limiting effect of PMMA and the high insulating effect of BNNS-NH2, the energy storage density (Ue) of the nanocomposite is up to 15.1 J/cm3 at 500 MV/m, which is 358 % and 182 % of the original P(VDF-TrFE). Furthermore, the η could reach to 72 %, being 184 % of neat polymer. These results demonstrate that the coordinated enhancement of Ue and η is critical for high performance energy storage, which provide scientific and technological support for the practicability of PVDF-based dielectrics.

Polypropylene nanocomposite film with enhanced energy storage performance via a continuous preparation

Dielectric polymers have been extensively employed in renewable energy conversion, hybrid electric vehicle, and high voltage direct current transmission systems, owing to their excellent electrical insulation, processability, and self-healing capability. However, the challenge lies in their relatively low dielectric constant (εr) and limited discharge energy density (Ue), which hinder the advancement of integrated power modules. Despite numerous efforts aimed at enhancing Ue, the fabrication of scalable dielectric film with both enhanced Ue and high charge–discharge efficiency (η) remains a major obstacle. Herein, the polypropylene-based films with BaTiO3@PP-g-MAH (BTO@PP-g-MAH) core–shell nanoparticles are prepared through a continuous melt extrusion process. The resulting nanocomposite film, incorporated with 5 wt% BTO@PP-g-MAH, exhibits an impressive Ue of 5.15 J cm−3 and achieves a high η of 93.2 % at 433 MV m−1, along with excellent cycle dielectric stability. Such enhancements in εr and Ue are ascribed to the improved interfacial polarization facilitated by BaTiO3 nanoparticles and the enhanced interface binding achieved through the PP-g-MAH shell layers. Furthermore, the enhancement of electric breakdown strength (Eb) is comprehensively investigated based on electrical breakdown mechanism and electromechanical breakdown model. This study demonstrates a novel strategy to prepare nanocomposite dielectric films that are compatible with commercial capacitor fabrication process.

Enhancing energy storage property of polypropylene‐based sandwich composites with surface‐modified nonzero dimensional nanomaterials

AbstractPolypropylene (PP) is a classical organic material for dielectric capacitor, exhibiting typical linear charge–discharge characteristics. However, its low energy density fails to meet the operating requirements of high‐power and energy storage systems. In this study, techniques such as spray‐coating, lamination hot‐pressing, melt blending, and in situ melt‐drawing are employed to fabricate PP‐based sandwich‐structured composite dielectrics. The outer layers consist of BN nanosheets (BNNSs)/PP composite, while the middle layer comprises Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3@Polydopamine (BST@PDA)/PP. The introduction of BNNSs with a wide bandgap improves the breakdown strength of composites. BST@PDA increases the overall polarization of the composites and alleviates the local electric field concentration caused by hetero‐interfacial field distortion. When the filling concentration of BNNSs is 0.10 wt% and that of BST@PDA nanowires is 3 wt%, the composite demonstrates a high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. Additionally, the sandwich‐structured composite, exhibiting a high charge–discharge efficiency of 97.80%, presents enhanced breakdown strength (Eb ~ 453 MV/m) and increased energy storage density (Ue ~ 5.67 J/cm3), which are 39.38% and 189.29% higher than neat PP (325 MV/m, 1.96 J/cm3), respectively. This study offers a viable and efficient approach to augment the energy storage density of PP‐based dielectrics.

The poly (arylene ether urea) double interface layer formed in PEEU@HfO2/PEI nanocomposites enables enhanced dielectric and energy storage performance

Polyetherimide (PEI) has great potential as a dielectric because of its high-temperature resistance, but its low energy storage density limits practical applications. Incorporating hafnium dioxide (HfO2) with a moderate dielectric constant (k) and wide bandgap can simultaneously enhance the polarization intensity of PEI and potential barriers for charge injection. Nevertheless, the poor compatibility between HfO2 and PEI inevitably introduces defects, thereby weakening the inhibitory effect on dielectric loss. To tackle this issue, an organic double interface layer is introduced to enhance dielectric performance, where the polar poly(arylene ether urea) (PEEU) containing hydrogen bonds can ensure the layer's compactness. Notably, its non-bonding urea groups serve as deep traps to capture migrating carriers, and the gradient k values of HfO2, PEEU, and PEI help mitigate electric field distortions at the interface, therefore enhancing the suppression of conduction loss. The polarity of PEEU and the introduction of multiple interfaces significantly contribute to an increased k (maximum 9.7, at 1 kHz). At 300 kV mm−1, 5 vol% PEEU@HfO2/PEI achieves a discharged energy density of 3.3 J cm−3 and a high charge-discharge efficiency of 83 %, surpassing 5 vol% HfO2/PEI by 1.95 and 2.44 times, respectively. The further COMSOL simulation verifies and proves this work as a novel design strategy for nanocomposite dielectrics.

High Energy Density in All-Organic Polyimide-Based Composite Film by Doping of Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Based Relaxor Ferroelectrics.

Recently, due to the advantages of superior compatibility, fewer interface defects, and a high electric breakdown field, all-organic dielectric composites have attracted significant research interest. In this investigation, we produced all-organic P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) terpolymer/PI (terp/PI) composite films by incorporating a small amount of terpolymer into PI substrates for high energy density capacitor applications. The resulting terp/PI-5 (5% terpolymer) composite films exhibit a permittivity of 3.81 at 1 kHz, which is 18.7% greater than that of pristine PI (3.21). Furthermore, the terp/PI-5 film exhibited the highest energy density (9.67 J/cm3) and a relatively high charge-discharge efficiency (84.7%) among the terp/PI composite films. The energy density of the terp/PI-5 film was increased by 59.8% compared to that of the pristine PI film. The TSDC results and band structure analysis revealed the presence of deeper traps in the terp/PI composites, contributing to the suppression of leakage current and improved charge-discharge efficiency. Furthermore, durability tests confirm the stability of the composite films under extended high-temperature exposure and cycling, establishing their viability for practical applications.

Bioinspired Dielectric Nanocomposites with High Charge-Discharge Efficiency Enabled by Superspreading-Induced Alignment of Nanosheets.

High-performance dielectric nanocomposites are promising candidates for thin-film dielectric capacitors for high-power pulse devices. However, the existing nanocomposites suffer from low charge-discharge efficiency (η), which results in severe generation and accumulation of Joule heat and subsequently the failure of the devices. In this work, we report nacre-inspired dielectric nanocomposites with outstanding η, which are enabled by superspreading shear flow-induced highly aligned two-dimensional (2D) nanofillers. Taking boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) as an example, the highly aligned BNNS in the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites contributes to a highly efficient Coulomb blockade effect for the injected charge carriers. Therefore, the bioinspired nanocomposites with highly aligned BNNS show significantly reduced dielectric loss (tan δ) (63.3%) and improved η (144.8%), compared to the ones with partially aligned nanosheets fabricated by solution casting. Furthermore, the optimized loading content of BNNS is as low as 3.6 wt %. The resulting nanocomposites exhibit reduced tan δ (0.018) and enhanced Eb (687 kV/mm), η (71%), and Ue (16.74 J/cm3). Our work demonstrates that the realization of high alignment of 2D nanofillers enabled by the superspreading shear flow is a promising way for the development of high-performance dielectric nanocomposites.

Horizontally-oriented barium titanate@polydomine/polyimide nanocomposite films for high-temperature energy storage

High-temperature ceramics polymer dielectric nanocomposite materials have broad application prospects in energy storage. The barium titanate (BT) plays an important role as one of outstanding representative ceramics in the dielectric nanocomposite materials. However, there is little known for the effects of two-dimensional (2D) BT morphology and layout on the properties of high-temperature nanocomposite materials. Hence, 2D scale-like BT ceramic fillers were prepared from layered K0.8Li0.27Ti1.73O4 crystals as precursors using a combined solid-state and hydrothermal process. 2D scale-like BT@polydopamine (PDA) core-shell nanocomposites were prepared via coating PDA on the BT. BT@PDA/polyimide(PI) nanocomposite films were fabricated by horizontally oriented distribution of BT@PDA in the PI matrix. The BT@PDA/PI nanocomposite films exhibit a high energy density (3.34 J/cm3) and high charge-discharge efficiency (83.68 %) at 150 °C. It is currently the highest energy storage performance in the BT/PI nanocomposite films at 150 °C. The excellent properties are due to preventing upward breakdown of electrical pathways and promoting dispersion and entanglement of the electrical pathway routes. Additionally, strong electrostatic interactions between the different polymer chains (PDA and PI) restricts the movement of space charges. This work demonstrates that introducing horizontally oriented, organically shell-modified and 2D small-sized BT nanoparticles into a PI matrix is an effective method for improving energy storage performance.

Multilayer BOPET dielectric film with internal double electron barrier for high temperature applications

With the continuous development of modern electronic and power equipment, practical applications in harsher environment call for film capacitors with higher temperature resistance. Here, we designed a multilayer film including two outer layers of biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET), two inorganic layers of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), and an intermediate epoxy layer. Due to the blocking effect of the BNNSs layer, the propagation of the breakdown path is hindered, which improves the breakdown strength of the film. Meanwhile, the carrier transport in the medium is effectively hindered, reducing the conduction loss of the composite film. As a result, the optimized multilayer composite film had a high discharged energy density of 8.76 J/cm3, maintaining a high charge-discharge efficiency of 95% at 25 °C, while remarkable values of 7.04 J/cm3 and 73% were obtained even at 150 °C, which showed prominent improvements compared with BOPET. Thus, it turns out to be a promising strategy of fabricating high temperature dielectric films.

Electrochemical Performance of Nitrogen Self-Doping Carbon Materials Prepared by Pyrolysis and Activation of Defatted Microalgae.

Pyrolysis and activation processes are important pathways to utilize residues after lipid extraction from microalgae in a high-value way. The obtained microalgae-based nitrogen-doped activated carbon has excellent electrochemical performance. It has the advantage of nitrogen self-doping using high elemental nitrogen in microalgae. In this study, two kinds of microalgae, Nanochloropsis and Chlorella, were used as feedstock for lipid extraction. The microalgae residue was firstly pyrolyzed at 500 °C to obtain biochar. Then, nitrogen-doped activated carbons were synthesized at an activation temperature of 700-900 °C with different ratios of biochar and KOH (1:1, 1:2, and 1:4). The obtained carbon materials presented rich nitrogen functional groups, including quaternary-N, pyridine-N-oxide, pyrrolic-N, and pyridinic-N. The nitrogen content of microalgae-based activated carbon material was up to 2.62%. The obtained materials had a specific surface area of up to 3186 m2/g and a pore volume in the range of 0.78-1.54 cm3/g. The microporous pore sizes of these materials were distributed at around 0.4 nm. Through electrochemical testing such as cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge of materials, the materials exhibited good reversibility and high charge-discharge efficiency. The sample, sourced from microalgae Chlorella residue at activation conditions of 700 °C and biochar/KOH = 1:4, exhibited excellent endurance of 94.1% over 5000 cycles at 2 A/g. Its high specific capacitance was 432 F/g at 1 A/g.

Aromatic-Free Polymers Based All-Organic Dielectrics with Breakdown Self-Healing for High-Temperature Capacitive Energy Storage.

High-temperature dielectric polymers are becoming increasingly desirable for capacitive energy storage in renewable energy utilization, electrified transportation, and pulse power systems. Current dielectric polymers typically require robust aromatic molecular frameworks to ensure structural thermal stability at elevated temperatures. Nevertheless, the introduction of aromatic units compromises electrical insulation owing to pronounced π─π interactions that facilitate electron transport and eliminate the breakdown self-healing property owing to their high carbon content. Herein, an aromatic-free polynorborne copolymer exhibiting electrical conductivity-two orders of magnitude lower than that of state-of-the-art polyetherimide-at elevated temperatures and high electric fields owing to its large bandgap (≈4.64eV) and short hopping conduction distance (≈0.63nm) is described. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the copolymer can effectively suppress the excitation of high-field valence electrons. Furthermore, the incorporation of trace semiconductors results in high discharge density (3.73Jcm-3 ) and charge-discharge efficiency (95% at 150°C), outperforming existing high-temperature dielectric polymers. The excellent electrical breakdown self-healing capability of the copolymer film at elevated temperatures further demonstrates its potential for use in dielectric capacitors capable of continuous operation under extreme conditions.

Utilizing Linear Polymers to Optimize Remanent Polarization and Construct Multilayer Interfaces to Obtain High-Efficient Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-Based Energy-Storage Composites.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has been widely studied as a ferroelectric polymer for energy dielectric applications. However, high-polarization PVDF has a low-efficiency issue, owing to high residual polarization. This study introduces highly insulating, low-loss linear polycarbonate (PC) into PVDF-based dielectrics. The PC layer optimizes the remanent polarization (Dr) of PVDF and maintains it within a small range, thus achieving a high charge-discharge efficiency. The multilayer structural design of PVDF-based dielectrics adjusts the interlayer electric field distribution. We have thoroughly studied the influence of the number and proportion of PC layers on the polarization and breakdown of the multilayer films as well as achieved collaborative regulation of dual parameters. Our results indicate that three layers of PC-PVDF-PC (CPC) films containing a large proportion of PC can polarize under high electric fields and maintain excellent charge-discharge efficiency, achieving an energy density and efficiency of 11.48 J/cm3 and 92.4%, respectively, under 610 kV/mm. The PVDF-based dielectrics prepared in this work are all organic films, and their flexibility and foldability are conducive to the preparation of flexible devices.

High energy storage performance of triple-layered nanocomposites with aligned conductive nanofillers over a broad electric field range

Simultaneously achieving high energy density (Ue) and charge-discharge efficiency (η) of dielectric materials at the relatively low operating electric field remains a persistent challenge to their practical applications. Herein, a P(VDF-HFP)-based triple-layer film by introducing the core-shell Al2O3@CNT in the middle layer and 0.05 wt.% boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) in the outer layers is designed. The experimental and simulated results confirm that the strategy of in-plane aligned Al2O3@CNTs can rapidly improve the dielectric constant of nanocomposites and reduce the probability of forming conductive pathways between neighboring layers. Meanwhile, the outer layers with BNNSs inclusions block the propagation of electric branches and suppress the leakage current, addressing the critical problem of the sacrificed breakdown strength and efficiency in the nanocomposites. Consequently, the as-prepared nanocomposite simultaneously exhibits great Ue and η under various ranges of electric fields. For instance, our results reported its Ue of 20.4 J cm−3 with η of 77 % at 520 V μm−1 and Ue of 27.0 J cm−3 with η of 76 % at 619 V μm−1. Importantly, the operating electric field for these high Ue and η is significantly reduced 20–50 % than the reported ferroelectric nanocomposites. Moreover, benefitting from the ultra-low fraction (<1.0 wt.%) of nanofillers, the nanocomposites demonstrate excellent stability in energy storage performance after 10,000 bending fatigue cycles. This work offers an effective approach to explore scalable and high-performance nanocomposites used as viable electrostatic capacitors.

Novel Polyetherimide Dielectrics: Molecular Design, Energy Storage Property, and Self-Healing Performance.

The development of high-temperature resistant dielectrics with excellent dielectric properties and self-healing behavior is crucial for the application of metallized film capacitors. In this work, a series of polyetherimide (PEI) dielectric films are designed and fabricated. The introduction of polar groups is in favor to the increase of permittivity, and the flexible connection such as the ether group will facilitate the reduction of dielectric loss. Moreover, the oxygen elements are beneficial to the "self-healing" of metallized film capacitors. Consequently, the permittivity of 3.53-4.00, dissipation factor of 0.281-0.517%, and Weibull breakdown strength of 347-674MVm-1 are obtained for the PEI dielectrics. In addition, PEI-4 (BPADA-BAPP) and PEI-8 (BPADA-MDA) are selected to further investigate dielectric breakdown (150°C), electrical displacement-electric filed (D-E) loop (at room temperature and 150°C) as well as self-healing performance, which will evaluate their potential in practical applications. The results show that PEI-8 has stable breakdown field strength and high charge-discharge efficiency at elevated temperatures. Metallized film capacitor based on PEI-8 exhibits excellent self-healing performance, with pleasing self-clear morphology, high breakdown voltage, and reduced self-healing energy. Therefore, PEI-8 is considered as a potential candidate for metallized film capacitors applied under harsh conditions.

A Bi-Gradient Dielectric Polymer/High-Κ Nanoparticle/Molecular Semiconductor Ternary Composite for High-Temperature Capacitive Energy Storage.

Attaining compact energy storage under extreme temperature conditions is of paramount importance in the development of advanced dielectric materials. The polymer composite approach has proved effective towards this goal, and addressing the correlation between filler distribution and electrical properties is foremost in designing composite dielectrics, especially in multifiller systems. Here, the design of a bi-gradient polymer composite dielectric using an integrated framework based on the phase field model is reported. This framework can predict the charge-inhibiting behavior of composite dielectrics, which is a key factor impacting the high-temperature capacitive performance but unfortunately is ignored in conventional phase field models. It is found that due to the traps provided by the functional organic fillers, more carriers are trapped near the electrodes and weaken the electric field, thus significantly suppressing the breakdown initialization process. An interpenetrating gradient structure is designed rationally and synthesized experimentally, which exhibits concurrent high energy density (5.51 J cm-3 ) and high charge-discharge efficiency (90%) up to 200 °C. This work provides a strategy to predict the high-temperature energy storage performance of polymer composites containing charge-inhibiting components and helps broaden the scope of data-driven materials design based on phase-field modeling.

Dielectric properties of a linear polymer-matrix composite filled with aligned Ag@BaTiO3 flakes

Composites with linear dielectric properties possess advantages in energy storage fields for the high charge-discharge efficiency with low energy loss. However, energy density of them is limited due to low permittivity. Here, a linear dielectric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite filled with parallel aligned core-shell Ag@BaTiO3 (BT) 2D flakes is prepared by directional shearing, which possesses high permittivity and excellent energy storage properties. Compared with traditional polymer/core-shell hybrid filler composites, this work presents modified filler composition, different filler dimension and enhanced energy storage performances. Conformably-coated Ag@BT flakes are prepared through simultaneous hydrolysis on polyvinylpyrrolidone-functionalized Ag flakes, forming a smooth ∼100 nm thick coating layer. The aligned PDMS/40 vol% Ag@BT flake composite exhibits a very high permittivity of 347 and a low dielectric loss< 0.03 at 100 Hz from 20 to 150 °C. The comp°site exhibits an enhanced breakdown strength of 26 kV cm−1 owing to BT coverage-shell blocking and parallel filler arrangement, compared with that of percolative composites filled with metal particles without shell-coverage. The composite exhibits linear dielectric characteristics with high discharged energy density of 6.18 × 10−3 J cm−3 and superhigh charge-discharge efficiency> 95% at 20 kV cm−1. This study demonstrates Ag@BT flake based linear-polymer composites for energy related applications.

Crosslinked PAES-based sandwich-structured polymer nanocomposites with covalently strengthened interface towards high-temperature capacitive energy storage

As a key material for capacitors, high-performance polymer dielectric films still exhibit the problem of low energy storage density, which cannot meet the requirements of high-power and high-temperature conditions. Here, a sandwich-structured composite film with inner layer doped TiO2-BCB (titanium dioxide – benzocyclobutene) and outer layer doped BN-BCB (boron nitride – benzocyclobutene) nanoparticles was prepared, which exhibits reduced dielectric loss, leakage current and enhanced dielectric constant (ε) and breakdown strength (Eb). Diels-Alder reaction and radical polymerization reactions are utilized to form the entire cross-linked sandwich structure. Moreover, the thermal-induced crosslinked structure replaces the traditional multilayer structure established by Van der Waals forces, thus improving the dielectric and mechanical qualities of the film. Specifically, the sandwich structure composites achieved a large discharge energy density (4.0 J/cm3) and high charge-discharge efficiency (84%) at 150 °C and 450 MV/m, and the dielectric dissipation factor is less than 0.005. These results demonstrated that designing a cross-linked network in multilayer nanocomposite structure is a feasible method to improve the high-temperature energy storage performance of these films.

Flexible cellulose/PVDF composite films with improved breakdown strength and energy density for dielectric capacitors

• Cellulose as biomass material was used for energy-storage dielectrics. • Regenerated cellulose/polyvinylidene fluoride dielectric composite films (RC-PVDF) were prepared by immersion method. • The energy storage density of RC-PVDF reached 8.3 J/cm 3 under the electric field of 410 MV/m, which was 144% and 176% higher than that of RC and PVDF. • The introduction of PVDF reduced the water absorption and improved the dielectric properties of the RC-PVDF films. Environment-friendly dielectric materials with high charge-discharge efficiency and energy density are urgently needed in the field of energy storage. Cellulose has the advantages of renewability, non-pollution, wide source, cheapness and so on. However, cellulose is easy to absorb water which causes the decrease of energy storage density in high humidity environment. In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used to reduce the hydrophilic of cellulose. Regenerated cellulose (RC)/PVDF dielectric composite films (RC-PVDF) were prepared by immersion method. When the concentration of PVDF solution was 3 wt%, the composite had the best comprehensive performance. The energy storage density of RC-PVDF reached 8.3 J/cm 3 under the electric field of 410 MV/m, which was 144% and 176% higher than that of RC and PVDF, respectively. This work expands the application of cellulose in humid environment and provides a good choice to develop high-performance biopolymer-based dielectric materials.

Design and characterization of molecular, crystal and interfacial structures of PVDF-based dielectric nanocomposites for electric energy storage.

PVDF-based polymers with polar covalent bonds are next-generation dielectric materials for electric energy storage applications. Several types of PVDF-based polymers, such as homopolymers, copolymers, terpolymers and tetrapolymers, were synthesized by radical addition reactions, controlled radical polymerizations, chemical modifications or reduction with the monomers of vinylidene fluoride (VDF), tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), trifluoroethylene (TrFE), hexafluoropropylene (HFP) and chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE). Owing to rich molecular structures and complicated crystal structures, PVDF-based dielectric polymers can show versatile dielectric polarization properties, including normal ferroelectrics, relaxor ferroelectrics, anti-ferroelectrics and linear dielectrics, which are beneficial for designing polymer films with high capacity and high charge-discharge efficiency for capacitor applications. Furthermore, to satisfy the requirements of practical high-capacity capacitors, the polymer nanocomposite method is another promising strategy to achieve high-capacitance dielectric materials by the addition of high-dielectric ceramic nanoparticles, moderate-dielectric nanoparticles (MgO, and Al2O3), high-insulation nanosheets (BN), etc. It is concluded with the current problems and future perspectives of interfacial engineering, such as core-shell strategies and hierarchical interfaces in polymer-based composite dielectrics for high-energy-density capacitor applications. In addition, an in-depth understanding of the roles of interfaces on the dielectric properties of nanocomposites can be achieved by indirect analysis techniques (theoretical simulation) and direct analysis techniques (scanning probe microscopy). Our systematic discussions on molecular, crystal and interfacial structures provide guidance for designing fluoropolymer-based nanocomposites for high-performance capacitor applications.

Enhancement of high temperature capacitive performance of sulfone-containing polyimide by suppressing carrier transport

With the increasing demand for safe operation in harsh environments, polymer dielectric capacitors with high energy density (Ue) and charge-discharge efficiency (η) operating at high temperatures are urgently needed. In this work, the sulfone group-containing polyimide (SO2PI) film with optimal imidization degree is prepared by regulating the kinetics of imidization reaction. The functional groups obtained by partial imidization enable polyimide to achieve excellent energy storage performance, and it is found that the presence of sulfone groups is beneficial for the further improvement of η. The optimal SO2PI film achieves a Ue of 2.40 J cm−3 at 400 MV m−1 and 150 °C, while it maintains a high η of 92%. Moreover, its preparation process without any additional modification steps matches commercial production equipment, indicating a simple and effective strategy for fabrication of a high-performance dielectric film. Thus, this work exhibits great potential in the field of high temperature energy storage.
