Enhanced plant litter impacts nematode communities and carbon use efficiency in a mixed forest

Abstract Rising temperatures and higher atmospheric CO2 levels can potentially increase plant photosynthesis and boost forest productivity, thereby spurring litter inputs to soils on a global scale. Understanding the feedback loops between increased litter inputs and soil biota activity will allow for better prediction of organic matter and carbon (C) cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Nematodes represent the full spectrum of trophic groups within the soil biota. Accordingly, we studied the link between nematode metabolic activities and plant litter input. For this, different litter input levels were manipulated in a temperate forest, including control zones without litter, natural litter input zones and zones with double, triple and quadruple amounts of natural litter input. Soil top layers (0–10 cm) were then collected to study the responses of nematode communities. Increased litter input positively influenced the abundance and diversity of nematodes, except for plant‐parasitic species. Higher litter input levels led to an enhancement in the ratio of bacterivores to the total of bacterivores and fungivores. More litter increased the K/r strategist ratio among bacterivores and the corresponding nematode metabolic footprints. More litter also stimulated nematode production and respiration components and improved the carbon use efficiency of bacterivores. Moreover, structural equation modelling revealed the crucial role of bacterivores in influencing soil organic C under increased litter input. In conclusion, our study shows that increased plant above‐ground litter input modifies the taxonomic and functional communities of soil nematodes, ultimately regulating carbon cycling in forest soils. Reducing N fertilization in the framework of the European Farm to Fork strategy under global change: Impacts on yields, N2O emissions and N leaching of temperate grasslands in the Alpine region

ContextThe reduction of N fertilization in agriculture as part of the Farm to Fork (F2F) strategy plays a central role in the integrated nutrient management action plan of the European Commission. However, the implications of this strategy for mitigating N losses and possible side-effects on grassland yields under global change are largely unknow. ObjectiveWe examined how a 20% reduction in N fertilization according to the F2F strategy is likely to impact yields, N2O emissions and N leaching of four intensively managed temperate grasslands in the Alpine region, two of them located in Switzerland, the other two in Germany. MethodsFollowing automatic data-driven calibration supported by inverse modeling and a cross-validation step, the process-based model DayCent was used for conducting the analysis. Global change scenarios under the representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5 and a baseline scenario (current climate) were created for the time frame 2041–2060 with the help of the stochastic weather generator LARS-WG. Results and conclusionsOur results indicated that, under current conditions of climate and CO2 levels (400 ppm), a 20% decrease in N fertilization would lead to a 5% drop in yields, but also in a 15% decline in N2O emissions and a 21% decline in N leaching (largely as NO3−). Under global change conditions (i.e., climate change and higher atmospheric CO2 levels), we found that increased yields, mainly induced by higher CO2 levels, are likely to compensate for yield losses resulting from the reduction in N fertilization. In addition, we found that the effectiveness of the F2F strategy to mitigate N losses is likely to be preserved under global change, still with stronger effect on N leaching. The F2F-induced decline in N losses was stronger when the latter were expressed per unit of harvested dry matter, i.e., up to 17% for N2O and up to 42% for N leaching. Although significant, these abatements in N losses are still below the 50% reduction level envisaged by the F2F strategy. Actions related to other axes of the strategy (e.g., sustainable food consumption) will be necessary to further reduce N fertilization and, therefore, to reach this ambitious goal. SignificanceOur results highlight the usefulness of models in accounting for interacting effects of global change and mitigation practices on multiple ecosystem services of grasslands. They allow quantification of the impact of new policies.

Reconstructed seasonality during the Mid Piacenzian Warm Interval and early Pleistocene cooling as recorded by growth temperatures from Mercenaria shells

The Mid Piacenzian Warm Interval (MPWI) has been identified as an analogue for future global warming because it had warmer temperatures and higher atmospheric CO2 levels than today, while subsequent early Pleistocene cooling is more similar to modern climate. However, reconstructions of these intervals lack seasonal-scale temperature reconstructions. Seasonal sea surface temperature (SST) reconstructions from deep-time archives can potentially provide insight into the nature of the climate system on sub-annual scales during critical climate states. Here we compared seasonal variability in growth temperatures during the MPWI and subsequent early Pleistocene cooling to modern climate reconstructed from oxygen isotope ratios recorded by the bivalve Mercenaria. Modern shells were collected from the University of North Carolina's Marine Sanctuary. Fossil shells from the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain (North Carolina) were collected from the Duplin Formation (MPWI) and the Waccamaw Formation (early Pleistocene). Oxygen isotope ratios range from −1 to 2.4 ‰ during the MPWI, −1–2.4 ‰ during the early Pleistocene, and −2.2 to 2.3 ‰ in modern shells. Stable carbon isotope ratios ranged from −0.91 to 1.67 ‰ during the MPWI, 0.19–1.87 ‰ during the early Pleistocene, and −2.46 to 0.60 ‰ in modern shells. Average seasonal growth temperature variations for the MPWI (∼11 ± 3 °C) are reduced compared to modern instrument records (∼16 ± 3 °C), while the early Pleistocene (∼14 ± 2 °C) was more similar to today. Modern Mercenaria record dark increment formation during the summer while fossil Mercenaria record dark increment formation during the winter. We hypothesize that this difference is timing of dark increment formation may be due in part to differences in water depth (∼1m for modern shells and ∼20m for fossil shells) or a shift in the location of the boundary between biogeographic zones. A −1.6 ‰ shift in mean stable carbon isotope ratios between fossil (0.92 ± 0.66 ‰) and modern (−0.65 ± 0.44 ‰) shells has been observed and may be a result of the “Suess Effect” and/or influences of estuarine/freshwater relative to marine settings.

Electrochemical reconstruction of a 1D Cu(PyDC)(H2O) MOF into in situ formed Cu-Cu2O heterostructures on carbon cloth as an efficient electrocatalyst for CO2 conversion.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion has enormous potential for reducing high atmospheric CO2 levels and producing valuable products simultaneously; however the development of inexpensive catalysts remains a great challenge. In this work, we successfully synthesised a 1D Cu-based metal-organic framework [Cu(PyDC)(H2O)], which crystallizes in an orthorhombic system with the Pccn space group, by the hydrothermal method. Among the different catalysts utilized, the heterostructures of cathodized Cu-Cu2O@CC demonstrate increased efficiency in producing CH3OH and C2H4, achieving maximum FE values of 37.4% and 40.53%, respectively. Also, the product formation rates of CH3OH and C2H4 reach up to 667 and 1921 μmol h-1 cm-2. On the other side, Cu-Cu2O/NC-700 carbon composites simultaneously produced C1-C3 products with a total FE of 23.27%. Furthermore, a comprehensive study involving detailed DFT simulations is used to calculate the energetic stability and catalytic activity towards the CO2 reduction of Cu(111), Cu2O(111), and Cu@Cu2O(111) surfaces. During the early phase of electrochemical treatment, Cu(II) carboxylate nodes (Cu-O) in the Cu(PyDC)(H2O) MOF were reduced to Cu and Cu2O, with a possible synergistic enhancement from the PyDC ligands. Thus, the improved activity and product enhancement are closely associated with the cathodized reconstruction of Cu-Cu2O@CC heterostructures on carbon cloth. Hence, this study provides efficient derivatives of Cu-based MOFs for notable electrocatalytic activity in CO2 reduction and gives valuable insights towards the advancement of practical CO2 conversion technology.

A synthesis of the Cretaceous wildfire record related to atmospheric oxygen levels?

The Cretaceous was a significant greenhouse period in Earth's history with higher atmospheric CO2 levels and temperatures than today. Although evidence of combustion has been widely described from the Cretaceous deposits, our understanding of the spatiotemporal diversification pattern and process of the Cretaceous wildfires is still limited. In this study, we comprehensively synthesize a total of 271 published Cretaceous wildfire occurrences based on the by-products of burning, including fossil charcoal, pyrogenic inertinite (fossil charcoal in coal), and pyrogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Spatially, the dataset shows a distinctive distribution of reported wildfire evidence characterized by high concentration in the middle latitudinal areas of the Northern Hemisphere (30°N–60°N) over the Cretaceous. Temporally, an overall increasing trend of the reported wildfire data from the Early Cretaceous to the Late Cretaceous is coincident with higher atmospheric O2 levels. However, the spatial and temporal patterns may result from many types of factors, such as taphonomy, preservation, and researcher biases, instead of a real picture of the Cretaceous wildfire evolution. To better understand the spatiotemporal diversification of the Cretaceous wildfire, more investigations on the record of wildfire occurrences during this period would be necessary in the future.

Quantitative evidence for Arctic continental freezing in a high-CO 2 world: Junggar Basin, NW China

Abstract We show that the Late Triassic–Early Jurassic continental Arctic experienced wintertime freezing conditions, despite the exceptionally high atmospheric CO 2 levels, by quantifying common lake ice-rafted debris (L-IRD) identified in the Junggar Basin of Xinjian, NW China. This L-IRD consists of outsized (0.1–12 mm) lithic clasts ‘floating’ in otherwise fine-grained, profundal lake sediment matrix. Laser-diffraction grain-size analysis demonstrates that the grain-size distribution for lacustrine strata of Junggar Basin is very similar to modern sediments from the seasonally ice-covered Sea of Okhotsk, reflecting a similar depositional mechanism. Three-dimensional computed tomography and two-dimensional thin sections demonstrate that the outsized clasts are dispersed, rather than confined to sand lenses or layers. These results are inconsistent with alternative methods of bimodal sediment deposition such as mud flows, algae rafting or root rafting. The discovery of Triassic–Jurassic continental freezing provides new context for understanding global climate during periods with high-CO 2 conditions and climate and biotic changes in the Mesozoic Era.

A high concentration CO2 pool over the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool

Anthropogenic emissions have produced significant amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere since the beginning of the industrial revolution. High levels of atmospheric CO2 increases global temperature as CO2 absorbs outgoing longwave radiation and re-emits. Though a well-mixed greenhouse gas, CO2 concentration is not uniform in the atmosphere across different altitudes and latitudes. Here, we uncover a region of high CO2 concentration (i.e. CO2 pool) in the middle troposphere (500–300 hPa) over the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP, 40° E–140° W, 25° S–25° N), in which the CO2 concentration is higher than that of other regions in the same latitude band (20° N–20° S), by using CO2 satellite measurements for the period 2002–2017. This CO2 pool extends from the western Pacific to the eastern Indian Ocean. Much of the CO2 pool is over the western Pacific Ocean (74.87%), and the remaining lies over the eastern Indian Ocean (25.13%). The rising branch of Walker circulation acts as a “CO2 Chimney” that constantly transports CO2 released from the natural, human-induced and ocean outgassing processes to the middle and upper troposphere. The CO2 pool evolves throughout the year with an average annual trend of about 2.17 ppm yr−1, as estimated for the period 2003–2016. Our analysis further reveals that La Niña (El Niño) events strengthen (weaken) the CO2 pool in the mid-troposphere. The radiative forcing for the CO2 pool suggests more warming in the region and is a grave concern for global warming and climate change.

Proxy‐Based Preformed Phosphate Estimates Point to Increased Biological Pump Efficiency as Primary Cause of Last Glacial Maximum CO2 Drawdown

AbstractUpwelling deep waters in the Southern Ocean release biologically sequestered carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to the relatively high atmospheric CO2 levels during interglacial climate periods. Paleoceanographic evidence suggests this “CO2 leak” was lessened during the last glacial maximum (LGM), potentially due to increased stratification, weaker and equatorward‐shifted winds, and/or enhanced biological carbon export. The collective influences of these mechanisms on the ocean's biological pump efficiency and amount of atmospheric CO2 can be quantified by determining preformed phosphate of deep waters. We quantify preformed PO4 (Ppre,AOU) and preformed () of LGM bottom waters using a compilation of published paleo‐temperature, nutrient and oxygen estimates from benthic foraminifera. Our results show that preformed phosphate of the Pacific and Indian deep oceans was reduced by about −0.53 ± 0.13 μM and suggest that much (64 ± 28 ppmv) of the Glacial‐Interglacial CO2 drawdown resulted from changes in the ocean's biological pump efficiency. Once carbonate compensation is accounted for, this can explain the entire CO2 drawdown (87 ± 40 ppmv). Preformed shows similar results. The reconstructed LGM Ppre,AOU and oxygen are qualitatively consistent with the changes produced by a suite of numerical sensitivity experiments that roughly simulate three proposed mechanisms for an increase in LGM biological pump efficiency: an increase in biological activity, a decrease in wind‐driven upwelling, and an increase in stratification in the Southern Ocean.

Paleozoic Extinctions in Cosmoclimatological Context: ‘Non-Bolide’ Extraterrestrial Causes for Global Chilling

The Paleozoic Era experienced 4 major mass extinctions; i.e., end-Ordovician, Late Devonian, end-Guadalupian, and end-Permian episodes. As a cause of significant biodiversity decline, non-biological environmental change on global scale was inevitable; nonetheless, popular claims of bolide impact and/or large igneous province (LIP) with too many ad-hoc assumptions have not yet been accepted as common/universal explanations for the Paleozoic extinctions. Recent research on extinction causes evolved through two stages; i.e., the heyday of the bolide impact scenario in the 1980s, and the overtaking by a LIP-mantle plume scenario in the 1990–2000s. Lately, we may sense a return trend to extraterrestrial causes since the late 2000s, which is not a simple revival of the old bolide-impact model but a new proposal for a cosmoclimatological scenario relevant to extra-solar processes; i.e., supernovae explosions and relevant migration of dark clouds over the Solar System. This short article reviews the current status of extinction-related research, which emphasizes two key issues; i.e., the categorization of extinction causes and new perspectives on non-bolide extraterrestrial causes. The categorizing of extinction causes at four distinct levels is effective in separating “global triggers” on the Earth's surface from more essential “ultimate cases” within the Earth and/or on outside of the planet. Causes of extinction can be grouped into four distinct categories in a hierarchy, from small to large scale: i.e., Category 1 – direct kill mechanism for each local biota, Category 2 – background change in global environment, Category 3 – major geological phenomenon on the planet's surface, and Category 4 – ultimate cause from the interior and exterior of the planet. Recent advances in He isotope analysis for extinction-related sedimentary records suggest extraterrestrial causes, not of bolide impact but of the encounter with a dark cloud (nebula). Emerging new perspectives of cosmoclimatology leads to an alternative extinction scenario; e.g. 1) increased flux of galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) with extensive cloud cover and 2) passage of a dark cloud (nebula) enriched with micro-dusts (IDPs) enveloping the Solar System. Both meteoric cloud coverage and IDP-screen can induce lowering/shutdown of solar irradiance, which may drive global cooling and sea-level drop associated with biodiversity decline. The past star-burst events detected in the Milky Way Galaxy apparently coincide in timing with the cooling episodes associated with major extinctions of the Paleozoic, i.e., at the end-Ordovician, Late Devonian, and Late Permian. Given such astronomical processes associated with global cooling in the past, much older global freezing episodes, i.e., Proterozoic snowball Earth events developed under high atmospheric CO2 levels, can be likewise explained. The study of mass extinctions on the Earth is entering a new stage under new astrobiological perspectives.

Quality control of total carbon dioxide (CO2) in serum or plasma using the Abbott Architect is affected by environmental pCO2 concentrations.

Introduction: Total CO2, or bicarbonate, is a parameter in clinical chemistry often applied to assess the metabolic status of a patient. This article discusses the observations and interventions during an episode of assay instability on an Abbott Architect routine chemistry analyser.Results: The Levey-Jennings plot of QC data showed a circadian pattern, having an overestimation of total CO2 during periods of high personnel attendance. A qualitative analysis revealed a correlation between atmospheric CO2 in the lab environment and the acquired total CO2 value in a quality control sample. Assessment of total CO2 is hence influenced by the equilibrium between atmospheric CO2, dissolved CO2 and bicarbonate. The effect is more pronounced on samples containing low concentrations of total CO2. The bias related to environmental CO2 is also noticeable on patient samples, patient means between periods with high and low atmospheric CO2 levels differed by 2mmol/L.Discussion: Passive ventilation of the laboratory environment is proven insufficient during weather conditions in which the lab is not exposed to wind. Consistent reduction of atmospheric CO2 could only be guaranteed with an active ventilation infrastructure. Systematic closure of analyser lids also reduced analyser variance.Conclusion: The lab environment is an important source of parameter variance. Both environmental and infrastructural aspects must be considered when assessing the potential cause of the instability.

Early or late? The role of genotype phenology in determining wheat response to drought under future high atmospheric CO2 levels.

The combination of a future rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2 ]) and drought will significantly impact wheat production and quality. Genotype phenology is likely to play an essential role in such an effect. Yet, its response to elevated [CO2 ] and drought has not been studied before. Here we conducted a temperature-controlled glasshouse [CO2 ] enrichment experiment in which two wheat cultivars with differing maturity timings and life cycle lengths were grown under ambient (aCO2 approximately 400 μmol mol-1 ) and elevated (eCO2 approximately 550 μmol mol-1 ) [CO2 ]. The two cultivars, bred under dry and warm Mediterranean conditions, were well-watered or exposed to drought at 40% pot holding capacity. We aimed to explore water × [CO2 ] × genotype interaction in terms of phenology, physiology, and agronomic trait response. Our results show that eCO2 had a significant effect on plants grown under drought. eCO2 boosted the booting stage of the late-maturing genotype (cv. Ruta), thereby prolonging its booting-to-anthesis period byapproximately 3 days (p < 0.05) while unaffecting the phenological timing of the early-maturing genotype (cv. Zahir). The prolonged period resulted in a much higher carbon assimilation rate, particularly during pre-anthesis (+87% for Ruta vs. +22% for Zahir under eCO2 ). Surprisingly, there was no eCO2 effect on transpiration rate and grain protein content in both cultivars and under both water conditions. The higher photosynthesis (and transpiration efficiency) of Ruta was not translated into higher aboveground biomass or grain yield, whereas both cultivars showed a similar increase of approximately 20% in these two traits at eCO2 under drought. Overall, Zahir, the cultivar that responded the least to eCO2, had a more efficient source-to-sink balance with a lower sink limitation than Ruta. The complex water × [CO2 ] × genotype interaction found in this study implies that future projections should account for multifactor interactive effects in modeling wheat response to future climate.

High atmospheric CO2 levels in the early Mesoproterozoic estimated from paired carbon isotopic records from carbonates from North China

It is hypothesized that the Mesoproterozoic was characterized by a prevailing warm climate and a high atmospheric pCO2 level. However, quantitative constraints on Mesoproterozoic atmospheric pCO2 are scarce. Here, we report high-resolution organic and inorganic carbon isotope records from sediment samples aged ∼1.6 Ga, collected from Hebei Province in North China. The δ13Corg values of these Mesoproterozoic samples vary from −28.4‰ to −34.3‰, and the δ13Ccarbonate values range from −2.1‰ to 0.4‰. The paired carbonate and organic carbon isotope records can be used as a proxy to quantify the atmospheric CO2 concentration during the Mesoproterozoic. According to the calibration between the photosynthetic isotopic effect and atmospheric CO2, atmospheric CO2 concentrations are estimated to be within the range of 910–18,800 ppmv, ∼2–50 times greater than the present atmospheric level. The results support the previous hypothesis which suggests that high levels of atmospheric CO2 prevailed in the Early Mesoproterozoic. High atmospheric pCO2 levels could have played an important role in compensating for the possible lower solar luminosity and maintaining the temperature of the Mesoproterozoic Earth's surface.

Clumped isotope evidence for Early Jurassic extreme polar warmth and high climate sensitivity

Abstract. Periods of high atmospheric CO2 levels during the Cretaceous–early Paleogene (∼ 140 to 34 Myr ago) were marked by very high polar temperatures and reduced latitudinal gradients relative to the Holocene. These features represent a challenge for most climate models, implying either higher-than-predicted climate sensitivity to atmospheric CO2 or systematic biases or misinterpretations in proxy data. Here, we present a reconstruction of marine temperatures at polar (&gt; 80∘) and middle (∼ 40∘) paleolatitudes during the Early Jurassic (∼ 180 Myr ago) based on the clumped isotope (Δ47) and oxygen isotope (δ18Oc) analyses of shallow buried pristine mollusc shells. Reconstructed calcification temperatures range from ∼ 8 to ∼ 18 ∘C in the Toarcian Arctic and from ∼ 24 to ∼ 28 ∘C in Pliensbachian mid-paleolatitudes. These polar temperatures were ∼ 10–20 ∘C higher than present along with reduced latitudinal gradients. Reconstructed seawater oxygen isotope values (δ18Ow) of −1.5 ‰ to 0.5 ‰ VSMOW and of −5 ‰ to −2.5 ‰ VSMOW at middle and polar paleolatitudes, respectively, point to a significant freshwater contribution in Arctic regions. These data highlight the risk of assuming the same δ18Osw value for δ18O-derived temperature from different oceanic regions. These findings provide critical new constraints for model simulations of Jurassic temperatures and δ18Osw values and suggest that high climate sensitivity has been a hallmark of greenhouse climates for at least 180 Myr.

Diel Transcriptional Oscillations of a Plastid Antiporter Reflect Increased Resilience of Thalassiosira pseudonana in Elevated CO2

Acidification of the ocean due to high atmospheric CO2 levels may increase the resilience of diatoms causing dramatic shifts in abiotic and biotic cycles with lasting implications on marine ecosystems. Here, we report a potential bioindicator of a shift in the resilience of a coastal and centric model diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana under elevated CO2. Specifically, we have discovered, through EGFP-tagging, a plastid membrane localized putative Na+(K+)/H+ antiporter that is significantly upregulated at &amp;gt;800 ppm CO2, with a potentially important role in maintaining pH homeostasis. Notably, transcript abundance of this antiporter gene was relatively low and constant over the diel cycle under contemporary CO2 conditions. In future acidified oceanic conditions, dramatic oscillation with &amp;gt;10-fold change between nighttime (high) and daytime (low) transcript abundances of the antiporter was associated with increased resilience of T. pseudonana. By analyzing metatranscriptomic data from the Tara Oceans project, we demonstrate that phylogenetically diverse diatoms express homologs of this antiporter across the globe. We propose that the differential between night- and daytime transcript levels of the antiporter could serve as a bioindicator of a shift in the resilience of diatoms in response to high CO2 conditions in marine environments.

The influence of surface CO2 condensation on the evolution of warm and cold rocky planets orbiting Sun-like stars

ABSTRACT The habitable zone is the region around a star where standing bodies of liquid water can be stable on a planetary surface. Its width is often assumed to be dictated by the efficiency of the carbonate–silicate cycle, which has maintained habitable surface conditions on our planet for billions of years. This cycle may be inhibited by surface condensation of significant amounts of CO2 ice, which is likely to occur on distant planets containing high enough levels of atmospheric CO2. Such a process could permanently trap CO2 ice within the planet, threatening its long-term habitability. Recent work has modelled this scenario for initially cold and icy planetary bodies orbiting the Sun. Here, we use an advanced energy balance model to consider both initially warm and cold rapidly rotating planets orbiting F - K stars. We show that the range of orbital distances where significant surface CO2 ice condensation occurs is significantly reduced for warm start planets. Star type does not affect this conclusion, although surface CO2 ice condenses over a larger fraction of the habitable zone around hotter stars. The warm start simulations are thus consistent with 1D model predictions, suggesting that the classical habitable zone limits in those earlier models are still valid. We also find that the cold start simulations exhibit trends that are consistent with those of previous work for the Sun although we now extend the analysis to other star types.

Arctic Sea Ice in Two Configurations of the CESM2 During the 20th and 21st Centuries

AbstractWe provide an assessment of the current and future states of Arctic sea ice simulated by the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). The CESM2 is the version of the CESM contributed to the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). We analyze changes in Arctic sea ice cover in two CESM2 configurations with differing atmospheric components: the CESM2(CAM6) and the CESM2(WACCM6). Over the historical period, the CESM2(CAM6) winter ice thickness distribution is biased thin, which leads to lower summer ice area compared to CESM2(WACCM6) and observations. In both CESM2 configurations, the timing of first ice‐free conditions is insensitive to the choice of CMIP6 future emissions scenario. In fact, the probability of an ice‐free Arctic summer remains low only if global warming stays below 1.5°C, which none of the CMIP6 scenarios achieve. By the end of the 21st century, the CESM2 simulates less ocean heat loss during the fall months compared to its previous version, delaying sea ice formation and leading to ice‐free conditions for up to 8 months under the high emissions scenario. As a result, both CESM2 configurations exhibit an accelerated decline in winter and spring ice area, a behavior that had not been previously seen in CESM simulations. Differences in climate sensitivity and higher levels of atmospheric CO2 by 2100 in the CMIP6 high emissions scenario compared to its CMIP5 analog could explain why this winter ice loss was not previously simulated by the CESM.

Middle Eocene Rhodoliths from Tropical and Mid-Latitude Regions

During the greenhouse conditions prevailing in the early–middle Eocene, larger benthic foraminifers (LBF) spread out on carbonate platforms worldwide while rhodolith beds were scarcely represented. This reduction in rhodolith beds coincided with a relative decrease in coralline algal diversity and with a drastic decline of coral reef abundance. Middle Eocene rhodoliths from two tropical (San Jacinto Fold Belt in northern Colombia and Bahoruco Peninsula in the Dominican Republic) and two mid-latitude (Salinas Menores Ravine and Sierra del Zacatín in Southern Spain) localities were studied. Rhodolith rudstones in the tropical areas accumulated on relatively deep (several tens of meters) platform environments and were also redeposited in deeper settings downslope. In Salinas Menores, rhodoliths are dispersed in planktic foraminifer-rich marls. Miliolids are common in the infilling of constructional voids in these rhodoliths, indicating that they originally grew in shallow-water inner-shelf settings and afterwards they were transported to deeper environments. In Sierra del Zacatín, rhodoliths are scarce and coralline algae mainly occur as crusts attached to and intergrowing with corals. Here, LBF dominated shallow-water carbonate platforms. In terms of taxonomic composition, coralline algae of the order Hapalidiales are the most abundant in the study areas, followed by Sporolithales. The order Corallinales is poorly represented except in Salinas Menores, where it is relatively abundant and diverse. The impact of high temperatures due to high levels of atmospheric CO2 during the Eocene and widespread oligotrophic conditions, which favored formation of LBF-rich lithofacies, might account for the low abundance of rhodolith beds at mid and high latitudes. In contrast, the more productive equatorial regions would have favored the formation of rhodolith beds.

Artificial photosynthesis for alcohol and 3-C compound formation using BiVO4-lamelar catalyst

The high levels of atmospheric CO2 transformed this compound in a preoccupant pollutant. However, a wide range of semiconductors, including bismuth vanadate (BiVO4), can be applied for CO2 reduction aiming generation of fuels. This work reports the optimization of the BiVO4 layer synthesis by microwave system using factorial experimental design, where the variables time (5 to 15 min) and temperature (120 to 160 °C) were studied. For evaluation purposes, the materials synthetized were applied in photocatalytic reduction of CO2. All the BiVO4 materials analyzed promoted the formation of methanol. The best condition was obtained under the material synthesized at 160 °C with 15 min of reaction, where 1.5 mmol L−1 gcat−1 of methanol was produced after 120 min of photocatalysis. For the first time, acetone formation was observed in this kind of material. The best condition for acetone production was acquire with the material prepared at 140 °C with 10 min of synthesis, where 0.030 mmol L−1 gcat−1 was generated after 240 min of CO2 reduction. Differences in methanol concentration obtained among the samples were probably related to crystallographic patterns of the material, once the presence of Bi2O3 or other BiVO4 crystallographic species may affect the efficiency of the material. The results obtained in this work show that the use of BiVO4 layer semiconductor prepared by microwave system for CO2 reduction leads to the generation of high amounts of methanol under just UV–vis light incidence, aside from promoting the production of acetone.

Reconstructing early Eocene (∼55 Ma) paleogeographic boundary conditions for use in paleoclimate modelling

The early Eocene is a period with very high atmospheric CO2 levels, which receives many interests from climate modelling aspects. To simulate the early Eocene paleoclimate, a realistic reconstruction for land-sea distribution, paleotopography and paleobathymetry is the fundamental step. Here, we present global paleogeographic reconstructions for the early Eocene (∼55 Ma), based on integrated paleogeographic data set, the plate-tectonic reconstruction software (GPlates) and geographic information system software (ArcGIS). Comparing with previous paleogeographic reconstructions, we improve the reconstructions by incorporating many recent geologic data and data set, including: (1) Better representations of the Tethys Sea, some marginal or inland seas in the East and Southeast Asia, Atlantic and Arctic region, and the Drake Passage and Tasmanian Gateway; (2) integrated paleoelevation data of global high plateaus and mountains, especially the paleotopography of East Asia, and adopting the latest paleotopographic reconstruction data of the Antarctica; and (3) using the latest data set of oceanic crust paleo-age and oceanic sediment thickness to reconstruct the paleobathymetry.

High-Efficiency Conversion of CO2 to Oxalate in Water Is Possible Using a Cr-Ga Oxide Electrocatalyst

Electrochemical transformation of CO2 into commodity chemicals such as oxalate is a strategy for profitably remediating high atmospheric CO2 levels. Electrocatalysts for oxalate generation, however, have required prohibitively large applied potentials, forcing the use of nonaqueous electrolytes. Here, a thin film comprised of alloyed Cr and Ga oxides on glassy carbon is shown to electrocatalytically generate oxalate from aqueous CO2 with high Faradaic efficiencies at 690 mV overpotential. Oxalate is produced at a surface anion site via a CO-dependent pathway; the process is highly sensitive to the hydrogen-bonding environment and avoids the commonly invoked CO2•– intermediate. Ultimately, this catalytic system accomplishes efficient CO2 to oxalate conversion in protic electrolyte.
