The Society’s Effort in Increasing the Economy Through the Palm Oil Waste

This research was implemented in Sukamaju Village, Sub regency of Singingi Hilir, Regency of Kuantan Singingi to know the potential of palm oil waste that is used by the society of Sukamaju Village as the manure and to describe the society effort of Sukamaju Village in using the potential of palm oil waste for increasing the economy level and decreasing the bad environment impact because of the palm oil waste. For obtaining the accurate data, the method of descriptive qualitative research is used by collecting the data, using the deep interview technique, direct observation and documentation. The analyze result shows that there is a quiet big waste potential in Sukamaju Village then processed to be the valuable manure. Moreover, this manure manufacture process is obtained from the palm oil waste from two big factories namely PT. Surya Agro Reksa and PT. Agrolestari. The process of waste production of palm oil includes the manufacture from the waste ponds, where the first pond of waste still has the high level of acidity so that it has not been able to be used yet. So the level of middle pond of waste water has been able to be channeled to the agriculture for make the plant fertile, and in the last level of solid waste is used as the natural manure of the land fertilizer. The analyze result shows that the waste of the palm oil can increase the fertility of land and plant, so it decreases the budget outcome of chemical manure. The socialization effort is needed to pressure massively for the information distributing connected the right waste processing.

Food and Food Waste Antioxidants: Could They Be a Potent Defence against Parkinson's Disease?

Oxidative stress, an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and endogenous antioxidants, plays an important role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's. The human brain is vulnerable to oxidative stress because of the high rate of oxygen that it needs and the high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are substrates of lipid peroxidation. Natural antioxidants inhibit oxidation and reduce oxidative stress, preventing cancer, inflammation, and neurodegenerative disorders. Furthermore, in the literature, it is reported that antioxidants, due to their possible neuroprotective activity, may offer an interesting option for better symptom management, even Parkinson's disease (PD). Natural antioxidants are usually found in several foods, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and oil, and in food wastes, such as seeds, peels, leaves, and skin. They can help the system of endogenous antioxidants, protect or repair cellular components from oxidative stress, and even halt lipid, protein, and DNA damage to neurons. This review will examine the extent of knowledge from the last ten years, about the neuroprotective potential effect of natural antioxidants present in food and food by-products, in in vivo and in vitro PD models. Additionally, this study will demonstrate that the pool of dietary antioxidants may be an important tool in the prevention of PD and an opportunity for cost savings in the public health area.

Conyza canadensis from Jordan: Phytochemical Profiling, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Activity Evaluation

In this investigation, the chemical composition of the hydro-distilled essential oil (HD-EO), obtained from the fresh aerial parts (inflorescence heads (Inf), leaves (L), and stems (St)) of Conyza canadensis growing wild in Jordan was determined by GC/MS. Additionally, the methanolic extract obtained from the whole aerial parts of C. canadensis (CCM) was examined for its total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC), DPPH radical scavenging activity, iron chelating activity and was then analyzed with LC-MS/MS for the presence of certain selected phenolic compounds and flavonoids. The GC/MS analysis of CCHD-EOs obtained from the different aerial parts revealed the presence of (2E, 8Z)-matricaria ester as the main component, amounting to 15.4% (Inf), 60.7% (L), and 31.6% (St) of the total content. Oxygenated monoterpenes were the main class of volatile compounds detected in the Inf-CCHD-EO. However, oils obtained from the leaves and stems were rich in polyacetylene derivatives. The evaluation of the CCM extract showed a richness in phenolic content (95.59 ± 0.40 mg GAE/g extract), flavonoids contents (467.0 ± 10.5 mg QE/ g extract), moderate DPPH radical scavenging power (IC50 of 23.75 ± 0.86 µg/mL) and low iron chelating activity (IC50 = 5396.07 ± 15.05 µg/mL). The LC-MS/MS profiling of the CCM extract allowed for the detection of twenty-five phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Results revealed that the CCM extract contained high concentration levels of rosmarinic acid (1441.1 mg/kg plant), in addition to caffeic acid phenethyl ester (231.8 mg/kg plant). An antimicrobial activity assessment of the CCM extract against a set of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, in addition to two other fungal species including Candida and Cryptococcus, showed significant antibacterial activity of the extract against S. aureus with MIC value of 3.125 µg/mL. The current study is the first phytochemical screening for the essential oil and methanolic extract composition of C. canadensis growing in Jordan, its antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

DETERMINATION OF PRODUCTIVITY OF COWS IN KETOSIS USING PROBIOTICS

High-yielding cows are prone to negative energy balance due to high lactation and insufficient dry matter intake after calving. This leads to the mobilization of fat and protein in the body to meet the nutrient needs of the lactating cow. High levels of nonesterified fatty acids are maintained by fat and protein mobilization, leading to ketosis due to incomplete oxidation of ketone bodies. The purpose of the research was to investigate the effect of probiotics on the productivity of cows and the quality of milk in ketosis. Research was conducted in the period from October to November 2021 on Holstein cows in the limited liability company "Lan" Agricultural Company of the North-Eastern region of Ukraine. It was found that in cows in the post-calving group, seven days after calving, the level of ketone bodies in the blood of the cows ranged from 1.0 to 2.1 mmol/l, which is higher than in the control by 71.42–185.71%. Two weeks after probiotic administration, ketone levels were between 0.5 and 1.2 mmol/L, 16.65–100% higher than controls. On the 28th day of the study, the content of ketone bodies in cows was within the physiological norm. In cows suffering from ketosis, productivity was reduced on the seventh day of research by 22.42–336.4%, on the 14th day by 11.6–29.35%. During the study of productivity, its restoration to the indicators of healthy animals on the 28th day after calving was established at the level of 28-29 kg/day. At the same time, the content of microorganisms and somatic cells had a direct correlation with productivity, and on the 28th day, the milk of all experimental cows was suitable for consumption and corresponded to the "extra" variety. In the first week after calving, the ratio of milk fat and protein in the milk of cows with ketosis was slightly imbalanced, which is a sign of ketosis. On the seventh day of the study, the milk fat level exceeded the protein content in cow 6905 by 32%, in cow 6852 by 39.25%, in cow 6916 by 30.34%, in cow 7642 by 41.17%, in cow 6187 – by 33.62%, in cow 2563 – by 36.40%, in cow 3891 – by 41.63%. At the end of the study on the 28th day, the fat/protein ratio approached the reference level of 1:1 in all experimental animals.

Antibacterial properties of oil extracts of black soldier fly larvae reared on bread waste

Context Farming black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) has become an emerging agricultural sector for upcycling food waste into high-quality protein and oil biomass. Depending on the chemical composition of the food waste, the oil extracted from BSFL can reach high levels of lauric acid, a natural antimicrobial compound. Aims We aimed to evaluate whether feeding a bakery waste-based substrate can enhance the lauric acid synthesis of BSFL. In addition, we aimed to test the antibacterial activity of these BSFL oil extracts against E. coli in vitro. Methods In a 12-day-long feeding trial, we reared BSFL either on a ground corn-based control substrate (n = 6) or a substrate based on bread waste sourced from a local bakery in Hong Kong (n = 6). We studied the growth performance, crude fat and lauric acid content, and agar well-diffusion assay-based antibacterial activity of oil samples extracted from the larvae. Key results The BSFL reared on the bread waste had a higher average weight (P < 0.001) and average daily gain (P < 0.001), similar crude fat content (P = 0.17), and higher lauric acid content (P < 0.001) than did the control larvae. Both oil samples moderately inhibited the growth of E. coli in vitro; the inhibition zones were 1.92 ± 1.0 mm and 1.25 ± 0.75 mm (means ± s.d.) big in the bread waste-based and the control oil samples respectively (P = 0.28). Conclusions Our results indicated that locally sourced bread waste is a suitable substrate for farming BSFL, providing a sustainable alternative for waste management. Implications The inclusion of locally produced BSFL oil as a feed ingredient for the local livestock farming sector might be an avenue not only to achieve circular economy, but also to reduce antimicrobial drug use. However, the effects on animal health and productive performance warrant further in vivo experiments.

STRATEGI PEMBERDAYAAN EKONOMI MELALUI INOVASI TEKNOLOGI AIR BERSIH: STUDI KASUS PENERAPAN REVERSE OSMOSIS DAN PERINTISAN BISNIS

The helplessness of coastal communities in processing salt and brackish water into drinking water is a great irony of modern society, in the midst of technological advances and the industrial era 4.0. The problem in the coastal areas of Sungai Kakap subdistrict, Kubu Raya district, is the lack of availability of clean water and the absence of clean water infrastructure. Peat groundwater in coastal deltas cannot support the use of groundwater sources due to high levels of acid and organic substances. This can trigger problems of poor community sanitation and cause the community's inability to optimize the potential of villages that have abundant natural resources. This activity aims to empower and increase community participation in designing and processing brackish/salt water into drinking water using Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology to meet the need for hygienic ready-to-drink water. Small scale water treatment system design using ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The raw water used comes from river surface water in coastal areas. The small-scale water treatment design consists of two FRP tubes containing filter media, three filter cartridges, and UF and RO membranes. Two thrust pumps, with a minimum pressure specification of 40 m, are used to provide pressure that exceeds osmosis pressure so that raw water can be filtered through the RO membrane. The results of the activity show that the implementation of the RO system has succeeded in increasing the availability of clean water in Sungai Itik Village, which previously experienced challenges in providing adequate water supply. In addition, the integration of local business startups with RO technology opens up new opportunities for local residents to participate in the local economy and increase family income. Key factors supporting the success of this economic empowerment strategy were identified, including active community involvement in planning and implementation, collaboration between local government and local stakeholders, and adoption of new technologies and skills by local communities. This activity provides an important contribution in understanding the role of clean water technology innovation as a catalyst for local economic transformation in coastal areas. The practical implications of these findings can help decision makers in designing sustainable and effective policies to improve the welfare of coastal communities through sustainable economic empowerment. The use of this technology can help increase the availability of clean water in areas that previously experienced difficulties in this regard.

Development and validation of a UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS method for the simultaneous determination of organic acids and phenolic compounds in Filipendula vulgaris, Polygonum divaricatum, Hypericum linarioides, and Rheum ribes

This research focused on investigating biologically active and pharmaceutically important phytochemicals using reliable and reproducible analytical techniques specifically designed for traditional medicinal plants. Considering the complex chemical diversity present in plant extracts, reliable identification methods are crucial. The goal of this study was to develop and validate a robust UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS method for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic acids (OAs) and phenolic compounds (PCs). With gradient elution of water containing 0.1 % formic acid and acetonitrile containing 0.1 % formic acid as the mobile phase, OAs and PCs were separated chromatographically on a C18 reversed-phase column. Through the use of an electrospray ionization source operating in negative ionization mode, these compounds were identified on a triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer. The validation results clearly indicate that the method exhibited linearity with a squared correlation coefficient (R2 ≥ 0.9986), demonstrating sensitivity (LOQ: 1.08 µg/L-10.79 µg/L), precision (RSD%≤2.73), and trueness (RE% ≤ 1.53) for the OAs and PCs found in the plants. The developed UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS method was successfully applied to the qualitative and quantitative analysis of OAs and PCs in Turkish plants, which are commonly used in traditional medicine. Our study identified a total of 12 OAs and PCs in F. vulgaris, 12 in P. divaricatum, 9 in H. linarioides, and 11 in R. ribes. In particular, gallic acid had the highest content in F. vulgaris (925.67 µg/g extract) and R. ribes (1358.78 µg/g extract), while H. linarioides (730.66 µg/g extract) and P. divaricatum (4003.02 µg/g extract) had relatively high levels of quinic acid. In conclusion, the developed UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS method allows the simultaneous analysis and quantification of 2 OAs and 33 PCs in plants and proves to be a valuable tool for evaluating the efficacy of traditional medicinal plants.

Effect of Thermal Hydrolysis Pretreatment Time on Microbial Community Structure in Sludge Anaerobic Digestion System

To evaluate the effect of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment time on the sludge anaerobic digestion system of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Daxing district, Beijing, the structure and diversity of microbial communities in primary sludge and an activated sludge anaerobic digestion system with different thermal hydrolysis pretreatment times (15 min, 30 min, and 45 min) were analyzed using Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the dominant groups of digested sludge were mainly distributed in Firmicutes, Cloacimonadota, Chloroflexi, and Synergistota, with W5 being the most common genus. The sum of relative abundance of the dominant phylum was greater than 60%, and W5 accounted for 20.8%-54.5%, showing a high abundance of a few dominant species. During the anaerobic digestion of thermo-hydrolyzed sludge, the relative abundance of acetogenic methanogens decreased due to high levels of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentrations, which suggested that the hydrogenophilic methanogenic pathway was more than that of the acetogenic methanogenic pathway. Correlation analysis showed that the soluble protein and pH of thermo-hydrolyzed sludge, NH4+-N of digested sludge, and thermal hydrolysis pretreatment time were the four main environmental factors affecting microbial community structure, and NH4+-N of digested sludge had the largest negative correlation with methanogens. The thermal hydrolysis pretreatment time was negatively correlated with both the Chao index and Shannon index, so longer thermal hydrolysis pretreatment time was not conducive to microbial flora during anaerobic digestion.

Autocatalytic Selection as a Driver for the Origin of Life.

Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection was revolutionary because it provided a mechanism by which variation could be selected. This mechanism can only operate on living systems and thus cannot be applied to the origin of life. Here, we propose a viable alternative mechanism for prebiotic systems: autocatalytic selection, in which molecules catalyze reactions and processes that lead to increases in their concentration. Crucially, this provides a driver for increases in concentrations of molecules to a level that permits prebiotic metabolism. We show how this can produce high levels of amino acids, sugar phosphates, nucleotides and lipids and then lead on to polymers. Our outline is supported by a set of guidelines to support the identification of the most likely prebiotic routes. Most of the steps in this pathway are already supported by experimental results. These proposals generate a coherent and viable set of pathways that run from established Hadean geochemistry to the beginning of life.

Post-mining ecosystem reconstruction

The global decade of restoration brings into sharp focus the need to rehabilitate lands damaged by mining, to provide safe, stable, and productive landscapes. For the majority of mines, the required final land use is some form of natural, semi-natural or managed ecosystem, such as agriculture, aquaculture or forestry. Mining activities lead to new highly altered landscapes that require rehabilitation. These comprise various on-land stores of waste material and mined land itself. The repair of damaged ecosystems is described by many terms including restoration, rehabilitation, revegetation, ecological restoration, and reclamation. These terms overlap in meaning, have regional biases, and all fall short of what is really required: ecosystem reconstruction. This requires a highly multidisciplinary approach drawing on many disciplines including geotechnical engineering, social science, soil science, law, hydrology, botany, geology, pollination biology, financial planning, alongside ecology. Ideally, mine rehabilitation should be progressive, start early in the life of the mine, and employ a strict regime of characterising and tracking waste materials for use in creating safe and stable post-mining landscapes. These actions will limit risks and optimise outcomes, especially when waste materials contain toxic metals or have high levels of acidity, alkalinity or salinity. Some mine sites are appropriate for the restoration of native ecosystems and biodiversity that existed pre-mining, but many, including landscape features created from waste materials, are not. Criteria for successful land rehabilitation are complex, multivariate, and highly contingent on the agreed final land use. Future advances in mine rehabilitation include the use of geomorphic landscape design and emerging thinking on cradle-to-cradle mining. This primer will discuss the complex factors that need to be considered in ecosystem reconstruction after mining and outlines approaches for optimising land rehabilitation outcomes.

Lability of sedimentary organic nitrogen estimated from amino acids in a reservoir on land reclaimed from Isahaya Bay, Kyushu, Japan

In 1997, the inner part of Isahaya Bay on the west coast of the Ariake Sea was separated from the sea by dikes, leading to the formation of a freshwater reservoir. Since the Isahaya Reclamation Project began in the 1990s, red tides have become more common in the bay. Studies suggested that a non-negligible amount of NH4+ was regenerated from organic matter decomposition in the turbid water drained from the reservoir into the bay, and this drainage water might be an important source of NH4+ for red tides in the bay. Although labile organic matter in the turbid water might also originate from resuspended sediments in the reservoir induced by the drainage process, the potential for the resuspended sedimentary organic matter to serve as an NH4+ source has never been evaluated. In this study, we found that sediments near the drainage gates on the dike in the reservoir contained high levels of amino acids and NH4+. In addition, the NH4+ concentrations were positively correlated with amino acids concentrations. This result can be explained by increasing NH4+ production according to labile organic nitrogen accumulation in the sediments near the dike. The result of our study suggests that the sediment resuspension near the dike induced by drainage might be a source of bioavailable nitrogen for Isahaya Bay.

The Enhanced Anti-anxiety Potentiality and Relevant Material Basis for the Extracts of Bile Processed Coptidis Rhizoma

Objective Bile-processed Coptidis Rhizoma (CR) exhibits stronger cold properties and central effect. However, the commonly used bile includes pig/cattle/sheep bile. It is currently unclear which kind of bile performs the best synergistic effect, and the enhanced efficacy is mainly contributed by what components. In this work, a comparative study on pig/cattle/sheep bile processed CR (pCR/cCR/sCR) was carried out. Materials and Methods Firstly, the anxiety model of sthenic heat type was established. Then, pharmacological research involving general state observation, biochemical examination (succinate dehydrogenase, glucokinase, corticosterone, adrenocor ticotropic hormore), pathological evaluation (liver and hippocampus tissue), and behavioral tests (elevated plus maze, open field test) was implemented. Finally, chemical assessment involving high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprints of pCR/cCR/sCR extracts and mass spectrograms of pig/cattle/sheep bile were performed in combination. Results cCR performed the most prominent enhancement in improving hyperactive energy metabolism in liver and abnormal hyperactivity of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis axis. As for chemical assessment, HPLC fingerprints of pCR/cCR/sCR extracts indicated that alkaloid components detected in cCR extracts were relatively low, mass spectrograms of pig/cattle/sheep bile suggested that bile acids in cattle bile were relatively abundant, and the contents of taurocholic acid, glycocholic acid, and glycodeoxycholic acid were particularly high. Conclusion Cattle bile could be specified as the processing excipient for bile-processed CR, and the high levels of taurocholic acid, glycocholic acid, and glycodeoxycholic acid mainly contributed to the enhanced efficacy of cCR.

Relation between the effect of increasing reaction time, reaction temperature and ratio of substrate on incorporation of lauric acid into palm kernel oil

Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid that is composed of 12 C atoms, also found in palm kernel oil (PKO). PKO belongs to medium chain triglycerides (MCT) containing high levels of lauric acid which has health benefits. This research aims to find the relationship between the effect of increasing reaction time and reaction temperature and the mole ratio of substrate on the incorporation of lauric acid into palm kernel oil. From the research results it was revealed that increasing the reaction time up to 24 hours could increase the incorporation of lauric acid but decreased if the reaction time was increased to 40 hours. Furthermore, an increase in the reaction temperature from 44°C to 64°C increased the incorporation of lauric acid, if it was increased from 64°C to 84°C it resulted in a decrease in incorporation of lauric acid, if it was increased again to 104°C it resulted in incorporation of lauric acid -21.6%. In increasing the substrate ratio, the higher the substrate ratio (1:11), the higher the incorporation of lauric acid.

Formulasi Sediaan Hair Tonic Ekstrak Rumput Laut (Hormophysa Triquetra) Dengan Kombinasi Ekstrak Kemiri (Aleurites Moluccana) Sebagai Penumbuh Rambut

Hormophysa triquetra seaweed is one of the marine natural resources that has not been utilized optimally by society. H. triquetra seaweed has a dominant pigment, namely fucoxanthin, which has anti-cancer and anti-obesity properties. Seaweed is widely used as a cosmetic product by utilizing its ingredients. H. triquetra seaweed contains flavonoids, phenols as antioxidants which are able to repair damaged hair cells and produce skin tissue which is conducive to hair growth, besides the vitamin C content which can increase blood circulation and provide nutrition for hair follicles. Aleurites moluccana candlenut oil contains high levels of oleic acid and has activity as a hair growth stimulant which has been widely used for generations as a hair tonic. In addition, the antioxidant properties of candlenut oil's oleic acid are believed to slow hair loss and accelerate hair growth. The aim of this research is to determine the formulation and characteristics of the best hair tonic made from H. triquetra seaweed and candlenut extract as a hair growth agent. A completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 3 replications was used in this experiment. The best results were in the F0 treatment because it showed good physical stability in the test animals and fast hair length growth among other treatments because the samples used contained the highest seaweed extract and contained antioxidants which could protect hair and maintain good hair pigmentation.

Development and Evaluation of Value-Added Cheese Spread using Red Cabbage Microgreens and Flaxseeds

Abstract: Microgreens, the young seedlings of vegetables and herbs, are gaining popularity for their distinct flavors , superior nutritional content and positive impact on gut health. Red cabbage microgreens (RCMG) stand out with remarkable vitamin C (147mg/100g) and other antioxidant rich phytochemicals content. Flax seeds (FS), known for their versatility in food offer cardiovascular benefits with high levels of alpha-linolenic acid and dietary fiber. This study aimed to develop value-added cheese spread using RCMG and FS, employing pre-preparation treatments like blanching and roasting. Three variations (V1, V2, V3) with varying RCMG and FS compositions were developed and evaluated. Commercially available cheese spread was used as the control (basic). Sensory evaluation, conducted by 46 semi-trained panelists using a 9-point Hedonic rating scale, revealed V1 (RCMG-30%, FS-6%) as the most accepted variation with good spreadability compared to the basic cheese spread. Value-added cheese spread showed no signs of spoilage in 30 days shelf life check under refrigeration. This study indicates the successful incorporation of Red Cabbage microgreens and Flaxseeds into the cheese spread with good sensory acceptability.

Solvent Extraction and Quality Evaluation of Two Varieties of Njangsa (Ricinodendron Heudelotii) Seed Oil

Ricinodendron heudelotii (Njangsa) is is a tropical tree, that produces oily seed containing high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). In Cameroon, there are two varieties of this tree known and produce an oily seed called ‘‘new Njangsa’’ and ‘‘old Njangsa.’’ While significant research has been carried out on the seed’s oil, there is a dearth in knowledge regarding the distinctions between the oils obtained from the two seed variants. The objective of this study was to utilize the solvent (hexane) extraction method to extract oil from both seed varieties and subsequently examine the physicochemical properties of the extracted oils.

Comparative extraction of melon seed (Cucumis melo L.) oil by conventional and enzymatic methods: Physicochemical properties and oxidative stability

Oil was extracted from melon seeds with three different methods (Soxhlet, cold-pressed, aqueous enzymatic extraction), aiming to evaluate its physicochemical properties and oxidative stability. The melon seed oil contained high levels of linoleic acid (53.6 %–70.8 %, w/w), squalene (101.1–164.7 mg/100 g), and β-sitosterol (119.5–291.9 mg/100 g). Results showed that the choice of the extraction method did not alter the fatty acid composition, but impacted on the physicochemical properties, the content of bioactive compounds and oxidative stability of the oil. Specifically, melon seed oil obtained by aqueous enzymatic extraction (AEE) exhibited higher tocopherol content and better oxidative stability compared to the oil obtained by other two extraction methods. Overall, AEE is a promising oil extraction method and could be an alternative to conventional oil extraction methods that could be implemented for the production of high-quality melon seed oil.

Effects of combined drying techniques and cellulase hydrolysis on the nutritional value and sensory properties of shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes)

Dried shiitake mushrooms offer rich nutritional value and unique sensory properties, prompting further investigation. The effects of different drying techniques (hot air drying (HAD), infrared hot air drying (IRHAD), pulsed vacuum drying (PVD), vacuum freeze drying (VFD), and natural drying (ND)) combined with enzymatic hydrolysis on the release of flavor compounds and nutrients from shiitake mushrooms were explored. The combination of HAD with cellulase hydrolysis yielded notably high levels of umami amino acids (5.4723 ± 0.1501 mg/g) and 5′-nucleotides (4.0536 ± 0.0062 mg/g), and superior volatile flavors. Combined with cellulase hydrolysis, IRHAD achieved the highest level of total sugars (6.57 ± 0.34 mg/mL), VFD resulted in the greatest soluble protein content (153.21 ± 0.23 μg/mL), PVD yielded the highest total phenolics content (93.20 ± 0.41 μg GAE/mL), and ND produced the maximum reducing sugar content (5.79 ± 0.13 mg/mL). This study addresses crucial gap in the post-drying processing of shiitake mushrooms, offering valuable insights for further product development of shiitake mushrooms.

Comparative Bioactive Compounds and Mineral Properties of South African and Lesotho Artemisia afra (Jacq.) Genotypes.

Artemisia afra is a plant that grows in the northern, central, and coastal regions of South Africa, as well as in neighboring countries such as Eswatini and Lesotho. These phytochemicals can be used as active compounds in plant-based medicine. Therefore, it is important to determine how plant minerals and phytochemicals, particularly bioactive compounds, are affected by the geolocation in which they grow. This study aimed to evaluate the mineral and phytochemical properties of A. afra genotypes in the southern regions of Africa. Leaf samples of A. afra genotypes were collected from Lesotho, in Mohale's Hoek and Roma. In South Africa, leaf samples were collected in Wepener and Hobhouse, and 80 plants were randomly selected for phytochemical and mineral analyses. This study reveals that phosphorus, calcium, potassium, iron, and zinc loaded positively to the first principal component, while copper loaded positively to the second principal component with variabilities of 29.95% and 21.12%, respectively. Furthermore, both the Mohale's Hoek and Hobhouse genotypes exhibited relatively high levels of ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and tannins. It is worth noting that genotypes from Roma and Wepener showed higher levels of foliar magnesium. Thus, the Mohale's Hoek and Hobhouse genotypes could be recommended for their better phytochemical contents.

High lactic acid levels in the brain contribute to the generation of focal slowing on the electroencephalogram.

Focal slowing on the EEG is often associated with structural pathology of the brain. Despite the clinical significance of focal slowing, the actual electrochemical mechanisms underlying this EEG phenomenon are still poorly understood. This paper briefly reviews the role of lactate in the pathogenesis of brain disorders that are primarily related to focal EEG slowing. An attempt is made to trace the hypothetical link between this EEG pattern and focal cerebral tissue lactacidosis.
