Development of a work systems stress questionnaire to predict job burnout: A mixed methods study based on a macroergonomics approach

Job burnout is a stress-related phenomenon that is a significant threat to the health and performance of organizations and employees. Interventions to ameliorate potentials for burnout have been limited by the lack of a comprehensive tool that considers work system stressors. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a questionnaire for predicting job burnout based on the macroergonomics work system approach. The setting was a petrochemical company in South Iran. In the qualitative phase of this sequential exploratory mixed methods research, 971 meaning codes were extracted from fourteen one-to-one and seven focus group interviews (n = 59). The codes were subject to Directed Content Analysis, which yielded three themes and 15 dimensions, which were used to inform the development of reliable and valid questionnaire. Items for each of the dimensions were sourced from exiting scales. To test the developed Work System Stress Questionnaire (WSSQ) in terms of its ability to predict burnout, a survey which included demographic items, the WSSQ, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory was completed by 359 employees. Hierarchical linear regression modelling of the data indicated that Task Significance, Job Demands, Work-Life Conflict, and Work Schedule predicted Emotional Exhaustion, and altogether explained 58 % variance. Task Significance, Violence and Harassment, Work-Life Conflict, and Job Insecurity predicted the Depersonalization and explained 29 % variance. Decision Latitude, Welfare and Financial Facilities, Task Significance, and Structural Problems predicted Personal Accomplishment and explained 26 % variance. All 15 dimensions were valid (CVI range .73–.90) and reliable (Cronbach's alpha range .71–.93). The results confirm the ability of the WSSQ to explain more variance regarding job burnout than previous studies. In turn, the WSSQ will enable remedial actions to be put into place. It may also be useful for understanding the consequences associated with other organizational ergonomic variables that are related to job stress.

Associations Between Callous-Unemotional (CU) Traits and EmotionRecognition Abilities in School Children: The Influence of ConductProblems and Age.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are associated with severe conduct problems (CP) in youth. Causal theories for CU traits focus on emotion processing deficits that interfere with empathy development. However, though CU traits are consistently associated with deficits in affective empathy (i.e., emotional reactivity), the association between CU traits and cognitive empathy, which requires accurate emotion recognition, is less clear. We hypothesize that past inconsistencies in the associations between CU traits and emotion recognition may be due to interactions with conduct problems (CP) and age. To test this, a sample (N = 258) of school children in the 3rd, 6th, and 8th grades completed a computer task that assessed facial expression recognition, while caregivers and teachers reported on CU traits and CP. Results from hierarchical linear regression analyses indicated significant interactions between CU traits and CP in their associations with overall emotion recognition and with recognition of fearful and sad faces. In each case, CP showed a non-significant negative association with emotion recognition at high levels of CU traits. However, for fear and sadness recognition, CP was positively associated with accuracy at low levels of CU traits. Significant interactions between CU traits and age also emerged for recognition of fear and sadness, such that there were non-significant negative associations between CU traits and recognition accuracy in younger children, but significant positive associations in 8th grade students. These results have multiple implications as they help to clarify past inconsistencies on the association between CU traits and emotion recognition and can aid in the development of more effective interventions to prevent or treat conduct problems in young children.

Video-streamed Intangible Cultural Heritage, Ethnic Perceptions, and Cross-cultural Competence in China

The aim of the present study was to investigate the capacity of video-streamed content related to intangible cultural heritage (ICH) associated with Chinese ethnic minorities to enhance cross-cultural competence and perceptions about ethnic minority communities among users from China’s ethnic majority. Moreover, the research examined how users’ motivations and demographic factors moderate these relations. Utilizing a quantitative online questionnaire to examine video-streaming users in China, the research employed linear regression and hierarchical regression analyses to test these relationships. The findings indicated that cross-cultural attitudes and skills served as positive predictors of participants’ affinity for ethnic minorities, suggesting more favorable cross-cultural attitudes and skills led to more liking of ethnic minorities. However, these factors did not forecast stereotypical perceptions of ethnic minorities. Notably, cross-cultural knowledge was found to have no predictive capability regarding either affinity or stereotypical perceptions. Furthermore, user motivations to use live-streamed ICH content, specifically amotivation and regulation, were found to significantly moderate the connections between cross-cultural competence and attitudes toward ethnic minorities. In other words, participants who perceived the benefits of using live-streamed ICH content contributed to the relationships. These findings provide substantial insight into the complex interrelationship between digital media use, cross-cultural competence, and interethnic attitudes in China’s context. The study highlights the ability of video-streamed ICH content to foster positive interethnic relations while unpacking subtle influences of user motivation in the process. The findings presented here may guide the development of approaches aimed at utilizing digital platforms to enhance cultural comprehension and mitigate stereotypes within multicultural communities internationally, thus enriching the overarching discussion regarding the influence of digital media on the formation of cross-cultural perceptions and interactions.

Family Resources and Parental Problem-Solving Skills Mediate Family Functioning and Family Adaptation in Families of Children With Cancer.

To explore the mediating roles of family resources (at the individual [parental self-efficacy], family [family resilience] and social level [social support]) and parental problem-solving skills in the association between family functioning and family adaptation in families of children with cancer. A cross-sectional study. This study recruited 318 parents of children with cancer from three tertiary hospitals in mainland China. Self-report questionnaires were used to collect data on key variables, including family functioning, parental self-efficacy, family resilience, social support, parental problem-solving skills and family adaptation. Data analyses were carried out using descriptive analysis, univariate analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, hierarchical linear regression and bootstrapping. Family functioning was significantly and positively correlated with family adaptation. Family resources (parental self-efficacy at the individual level, family resilience at the family level or social support at the social level) and parental problem-solving skills both independently mediated the relationship between family functioning and family adaptation. Additionally, family resources at all three levels mediated the relationship through their effects on cumulatively parental problem-solving skills, constructing a chain mediating model. The study underscores the significance of family functioning, family resources at the individual, family and social levels and parental problem-solving skills in promoting adaptation in families of children with cancer. It highlights the need for family-centred interventions targeted at these factors to improve family adaptation. This study extended related theories and previous studies to confirm the mediating role of family resources and parental problem-solving skills, both independently and sequentially. Moreover, parental problem-solving skills were confirmed as key elements that can be incorporated into future interventions, suggesting that problem-solving skills training may serve as a highly promising program for families of children with cancer. Continuous work-related sitting time and its association with perceived workplace support for health among workers in the Greater Accra Municipality: a cross-sectional analysis with sensitivity analyses

BackgroundResearch to date has shown that work-related sitting time can be a major occupational health risk. This understanding has encouraged several workplace health promotion efforts. Even so, some domains of work-related sitting time and their associations with Perceived Workplace Support for Health (PWSH) have not been considered in research. This study aims to compare domains of work-related sitting time between employee characteristics (e.g., gender and age) and assess their associations with PWSH.MethodsThis study adopted a cross-sectional design with a sensitivity analysis against confounding and measures against common methods bias. The study population was employees of private and public firms in Accra, Ghana. In all, 1000 employees participated in the study. The hierarchical linear regression analysis and the independent samples t-test were used to present the results.ResultsEmployees working in service firms, compared with those working in manufacturing firms, reported longer sitting time for lunchtime. After adjusting for physical function, we found a negative association between PWSH and the sum of continuous sitting time as well as its domains (p < 0.001), except for ‘sitting with a desk’ (p > 0.05).ConclusionWork-related sitting time was associated with employee characteristics and was lower at higher PWSH. This study reinforces the importance of workplace support for health and its role in work-related sitting.

Rapid Zooplankton Assessment: Evaluating a Tool for Ecosystem‐Based Fisheries Management in the Large Marine Ecosystems of Alaska

ABSTRACTEcosystem‐based fisheries management (EBFM) remains an aspirational goal for management throughout the world. One of the primary limitations of EBFM is the incorporation of basic lower trophic level information, particularly for zooplankton, despite the importance of zooplankton to fish. The generation of zooplankton abundance estimates requires significant time and expertise to generate. The rapid zooplankton assessment (RZA) is introduced as a tool whereby nontaxonomic experts may produce rapid zooplankton counts shipboard that can be applied to management in near real time. Zooplankton are rapidly counted shipboard and placed into three broad groups of zooplankton relevant to higher trophic levels: large copepods (&gt; 2 mm), small copepods (&lt; 2 mm), and euphausiids. A Bayesian, hierarchical linear regression modeling approach was used to validate the relationship between RZA abundances and laboratory‐processed abundances to ensure the rapid method is a reliable indicator. Additional factors likely to impact the accuracy of the RZA abundance predictions were added to the initial regression model: RZA sorter, survey, season, and large marine ecosystem (Bering Sea, Chukchi/Beaufort Sea, and Gulf of Alaska). We tested models that included the random effect of sorter nested within survey, which improved fits for both large copepods (Bayes R2 = 0.80) and euphausiids (Bayes R2 = 0.84). These factors also improved the fit for small copepods when the fixed effect of season was also included (Bayes R2 = 0.65). Additional RZA data were used to predict laboratory‐processed abundances for each zooplankton category and the results were consistent with model training data: large copepods (Bayes R2 = 0.80), small copepods (Bayes R2 = 0.64), and euphausiids (Bayes R2 = 0.88). The Bayesian models were therefore able to predict laboratory‐processed abundances with an associated error when accounting for these fixed and random effects. To demonstrate the utility of zooplankton data in management, zooplankton time series from the Bering Sea shelf were shown to vary in relation to warm and cold conditions. This variability impacted commercially important fish, notably Walleye Pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus), and these time series were used by managers using a risk table approach. The RZA method provides a rapid zooplankton population estimation in near real time that can be applied to the management process quickly, thus helping to fill a gap in EBFM.

Associations between misgendering, invalidation, pride, community connectedness, and trauma among nonbinary adults.

Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people experience elevated rates of posttraumatic stress (PTS) due to transphobic violence, discrimination, microaggressions, and minority stress. Nonbinary people in particular experience unique chronic minority stressors (e.g., misgendering, interpersonal invalidation) because of the assumption that gender is inherently binary. Such examples of oppression against TNB people could contribute to complex PTS (c-PTS) symptoms, which arise due to exposure to chronic, cumulative, and interpersonal trauma. This study aimed to examine how misgendering and invalidation may be associated with PTS and c-PTS symptoms among nonbinary people and whether this association is moderated by pride and community connectedness. Cross-sectional data from 610 nonbinary people living in the United States and Canada were analyzed using hierarchical linear regressions. Misgendering and invalidation had significant positive associations with PTS and c-PTS symptoms. However, pride and community connectedness were not significant moderators of these associations. Findings from this study contribute to the conceptualizations of traumatic stress among nonbinary people and provide considerations for more affirming trauma-informed care. The protective effect of vitamin B12 on neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia-free older adults in a multi-ethnic population

Vitamin B12 deficiency has been associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), but the relationship between vitamin B12 and NPS remains unclear prior to the onset of dementia. The study aims to examine the association between vitamin B12 and NPS in dementia-free Asian older adults. This is a cross-sectional population-based study where multi-ethnic community-dwelling Asian participants (i.e. Chinese, Malay, Indian) aged ≥60 years underwent comprehensive neuropsychological and clinical assessments including the examination of clinical history and the collection of blood samples. NPS and subsyndromes were evaluated using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Serum vitamin B12 and homocysteine (Hcy) concentration were measured by competitive immunoassays. To analyse the relationship between vitamin B12 and NPS, hierarchical linear regression, multinomial regression and moderation analyses were performed. A total of 798 dementia-free individuals (age=69.7±6.5 years old, F=408 (51.1%)) were included in the current study. There were 80 (10%) individuals with clinically relevant NPS (i.e. NPI scores ≥4). Higher vitamin B12 was associated with lower NPI total scores (p=0.030) and apathy (p=0.005), after controlling for age, sex, ethnicity, cognitive functioning, socioeconomic status and Hcy concentration. Participants with higher vitamin B12 was also less likely to have clinically relevant apathy (p=0.007). The moderation effect of Hcy and cognitive functioning on the inverse association between vitamin B12 and NPS was observed. A protective effect of vitamin B12 on NPS and subsyndromes was observed in a multi-ethnic Asian cohort of dementia-free individuals. Future longitudinal studies are required to further elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms between vitamin B12 and NPS in diverse ethnic groups.

Working memory performance is related to childhood trauma but not psychotic-like experiences in a nonpsychiatric sample.

This project seeks to clarify the impact of childhood trauma and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) on working memory (WM) and explore gender differences in these relationships. The effect of childhood trauma on WM performance has yet to be explored in individuals with PLEs, despite consistent associations between trauma, psychosis spectrum symptoms, and WM performance. In 466 undergraduates, positive PLEs (Prodromal Questionnaire) and trauma (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire) were examined to determine contributions to WM performance on a spatial n-back task. We conducted hierarchical linear regressions on the total sample and stratified by gender to examine the effects of childhood trauma, positive PLEs, and their interaction on WM performance. Supplemental analyses explored attenuated negative and disorganized symptoms. Controlling for age, there were no significant main effects of positive PLEs, childhood trauma, their interaction, or three-way interaction including gender in predicting WM. After stratifying by gender, childhood trauma was significantly associated with poorer WM in females only. Post hoc analyses revealed that in the full sample, physical neglect predicted WM performance and was a trend for females, while sexual abuse trended toward predicting WM in males. Supplemental analyses of attenuated negative and disorganized symptoms revealed childhood trauma significantly predicted WM in the full sample and females only for negative symptoms. Females who have experienced childhood trauma may be at greater risk for WM problems, irrespective of co-occurring PLEs, suggesting that cognitive difficulties may be partially attributable to history of trauma. Neurocognitive correlates of cerebral mitochondrial function and energy metabolism using phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy in older adults.

The goal of the current study was to learn about the role of cerebral mitochondrial function on cognition. Based on established cognitive neuroscience, clinical neuropsychology, and cognitive aging literature, we hypothesized mitochondrial function within a focal brain region would map onto cognitive behaviors linked to that brain region. To test this hypothesis, we used phosphorous (31P) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to derive indirect markers of mitochondrial function and energy metabolism across two regions of the brain (bifrontal, left temporal). We administered cognitive tasks sensitive to frontal-executive or temporal-hippocampal systems to a sample of 70 cognitively unimpaired older adults with subjective memory complaints and a first-degree family history of Alzheimer's disease and predicted better executive function and recent memory performance would be related to greater frontal and temporal 31P MRS indirect markers, respectively. Results of separate hierarchical linear regressions indicated better recent memory scores were related to 31P MRS indirect markers of lower static energy and higher energy reserve within the left temporal voxel; these findings were associated with moderate effect sizes. Contrary to predictions, executive function performance was unrelated to 31P MRS indirect markers within the bilateral frontal voxel, which may reflect a combination of theoretical and/or methodological issues. Findings represent a snapshot of the relationship between cognition and 31P MRS indirect markers of mitochondrial function, providing potential avenues for future work investigating mitochondrial underpinnings of cognition. 31P MRS may provide a sensitive neuroimaging marker for differences in aspects of memory among persons at-risk for mild cognitive impairment or dementia.

Transdiagnostic Risk Factors for Reasons for Smoking: Evaluating the Concurrent Role of Distress Tolerance and Anxiety Sensitivity.

Although rates of cigarette smoking have declined in the US, many individuals report experiencing significant barriers to quitting smoking, including poor mental health. Two prominent affective vulnerability factors that independently underlie both smoking behavior and processes and mental health include distress tolerance and anxiety sensitivity. However, limited work has examined the concurrent role of these factors on motivational reasons for smoking. The current study is a secondary analysis of baseline data from a nationally recruited sample of individuals (N = 156; Mage = 29.74, SD = 7.72; 69.2% female) interested in participating in a digitally delivered intervention for comorbid smoking and low distress tolerance. Two-step hierarchical linear regression was used to examine the unique role of self-reported distress tolerance and anxiety sensitivity in relation to reasons for smoking (i.e., habitual, negative affect reduction, addictive, pleasurable/relaxation, stimulation, and sensorimotor manipulation). Results indicated that lower levels of distress tolerance and greater levels of anxiety sensitivity were associated with greater sensorimotor manipulation reasons for smoking. Only distress tolerance was related to addictive, negative affect reduction, and stimulation reasons for smoking, whereas only anxiety sensitivity was related to habitual reasons for smoking. The current findings suggest that there is an explanatory utility for unique and multi-risk effects for distress tolerance and anxiety sensitivity for understanding smoking motives.

Therapeutic alliance and suicidal ideation in brief cognitive behavioral therapy for outpatients

ObjectiveThe therapeutic alliance is central to psychotherapy. However, research on the relationship between alliance and suicidality is scarce. We examined whether pretreatment suicidality is associated with an impaired alliance formation in brief cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and whether the therapeutic alliance is associated with change in suicidal ideation (difference between pretreatment and posttreatment assessment).MethodsN = 643 outpatients (64% female; age: M[SD] = 37.09[13.15], range: 18–73 years), received 12 sessions of manual-based short-term CBT for primary diagnosis treatment. Using self-report questionnaires, suicidal ideation and behavior were assessed before and after therapy, patient-rated therapeutic alliance was assessed after the fourth session and posttreatment. We performed correlation analyses and two hierarchical linear regressions, unadjusted and adjusted for possible confounding variables (age, gender, lifetime suicide attempts and depression).ResultsPretreatment suicidal ideation was not predictive of the quality of the early alliance. In addition, the therapeutic alliance was not predictive of change in suicidal ideation.ConclusionsIn the outpatient setting, no association was found between therapeutic alliance and suicidality. Future studies should investigate therapeutic alliance as a predictor of prospective suicidal behavior in different clinical settings.

Enhancing SME performance through innovation: evidence from a transition economy – Kosovo

Purpose – What are the effects of implementing various types of innovation, including product, process, and technological innovations, on the performance of SMEs in the manufacturing sector? This is a question that preoccupies us a lot. This study seeks to examine the individual and integrated effects of these innovations. Indeed, we examine the impact of three categories of innovation – product, process, and technological innovation – on the performance of SMEs in the manufacturing industry. Research methodology – We used a quantitative approach to execute this research, selecting SMEs at random using self-administered questionnaires. The data collected from 153 manufacturing SMEs was analyzed using hierarchical linear regression to investigate, evaluate, and refine the relation among product, process, and technological innovation and SME performance. Findings – This study’s findings reveal a clear and direct relationship between these three forms of innovation and SMEs’ performance. This study also provides empirical evidence that various forms of innovation, either examined individually or as integrated, exert a positive effect on the performance of SMEs in the manufacturing industry. Limitations – This study focuses on Kosovo-based SMEs, with the assumption of an upright connection between variables. Future studies can examine the existence of reverse causality in a variety of regional, cultural, and industrial settings. Originality/Value – This study significantly advances existing knowledge by providing useful insights into the complex interplay among product, process, and technological innovation (examined from both individual and integrated perspectives) as well as the performance of SMEs in the manufacturing industry.

Psychosocial Work Factors, Job Stress, and Self-Rated Health Among Hotel Housekeepers.

Hotel housekeeping is widely recognized as a poor-quality job due to its high demands and limited resources. Hotel housekeepers (HHs) face both hard physical work and mentally demanding conditions, yet psychosocial factors in this feminized and precarious occupation remain under-researched. To address this gap, this study examines HHs' exposure to psychosocial factors at work and their impact on job stress and self-rated health. A cross-sectional survey of a random sample of 926 HHs in the Balearic Islands (Spain) assessed job stress, self-rated health, psychosocial factors (job demands and resources), and sociodemographic variables using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire II (COPSOQ-II) and the National Health Survey. Descriptive analysis and hierarchical linear regression models were applied. The prevalence of job stress was 61.1% (95% confidence interval [CI] = [57.8%, 64.1%]), while the prevalence of poor self-rated health was 59.9% (95% CI = [56.6%, 62.9%]). Hotel housekeepers were highly exposed to job demands such as intense work pace, job-specific stressors, work-life conflict, and emotional demands; highly available job resources were role clarity, task meaning, and social support. Regression models revealed work pace, work-life conflict, nationality, and weak leader support as key predictors of job stress; and work-life conflict and leadership quality as key predictors of self-rated health. Although considered an eminently physical job, psychosocial work factors play a key role in explaining HHs' job stress and self-rated health. Occupational health professionals should design workplace interventions to reduce work pace, mitigate work-life conflict, and enhance resources such as leader support, sense of community, and leadership quality.

Factors Associated with Dietary Diversity in Community-Dwelling Brazilian Older Adults.

Older populations are at high risk of nutritional inadequacy and monotonous diets, and assessing dietary diversity can be a practical measure to indicate groups at nutritional risk. We aimed to explore the dietary diversity of older adults enrolled in primary health care services in Brazil and to evaluate its associated factors. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the dietary diversity score (DDS) of 581 participants (≥60 years) registered in primary care services. All foods mentioned in a 24 h food recall were classified into 10 groups, and factors associated with the DDS were analyzed using hierarchical linear regression models in two blocks: (1) sociodemographic and (2) health conditions and lifestyle. The mean DDS was 5.07 (±1.34), and 67.5% of the sample reached the minimum dietary diversity (≥5 groups). In the final model, income, previous diagnosis of cancer, and sporadic intake of alcohol were positively associated with DDS. In contrast, cognitive decline, sedentary lifestyle, and anorexia of aging were negatively associated with DDS. These findings show that the entire structural, economic, and social system needs to facilitate access to quality food, adequate places and conditions for the practice of physical activity, and policies regarding tobacco and alcohol abuse, in addition to nutritional guidance.

Prediction of depressive symptoms in young adults by polygenic score and childhood maltreatment: Results from a population-based birth cohort.

Childhood maltreatment is linked with later depressive symptoms, but not every maltreated child will experience symptoms later in life. Therefore, we investigate whether genetic predisposition for depression (i.e., polygenic score for depression, PGSDEP) modifies the association between maltreatment and depressive symptoms, while accounting for different types of maltreatment and whether it was evaluated through prospective and retrospective reports. The sample included 541-617 participants from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development with information on maltreatment, including threat, deprivation, assessed prospectively (5 months-17 years) and retrospectively (reported at 23 years), PGSDEP and self-reported depressive symptoms (20-23 years). Using hierarchical linear regressions, we found that retrospective, but not prospective indicators of maltreatment (threat/deprivation/cumulative) were associated with later depressive symptoms, above and beyond the PGSDEP. Our findings also show the presence of gene-environment interactions, whereby the association between maltreatment (retrospective cumulative maltreatment/threat, prospective deprivation) and depression was strengthened among youth with higher PGSDEP scores. Consistent with the Diathesis-Stress hypothesis, our findings suggest that a genetic predisposition for depression may exacerbate the putative impact of maltreatment on later depressive symptoms, especially when maltreatment is retrospective. Understanding the gene-environment interplay emerging in the context of maltreatment has the potential to guide prevention efforts.

The use of imaging studies and its association with surgical delays, costs and complications in patients with acute appendicitis: a population-based study in Ontario, Canada

BackgroundAppendicitis is commonly assessed with diagnostic imaging prior to intervention. The study objective was to describe practice patterns of diagnostic imaging for appendicitis and the associations with surgical delays, hospital costs, and complications.MethodsThis was a population-based cohort study of patients with appendicitis between 2009 and 2015. Imaging was categorized into none, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or both. The outcomes were: 1) time from triage to surgery, 2) complication rate and 3) hospital costs. Logistic regression and hierarchical linear regression were used to estimate associations between imaging and outcomes.ResultsThere were 50,369 study patients. Time to surgery was highest in patients requiring both CT and ultrasound (mean difference 5.0 h 95%CI 4.6–5.4) followed by patients requiring CT (2.7 h 95%CI 2.4–3.0) and ultrasound (mean difference 0.7 h, 95%CI 0.5–1.0), compared to no imaging. Hospital costs were highest in those with both ultrasound and CT ($256 95%CI $28–483) and CT alone ($234 95%CI $75–394), compared with no imaging. Complications were associated with the use of CT (OR 1.08 95%CI 1.00–1.17) and both CT and ultrasound (OR 1.21 95%CI 1.09–1.35) compared with no imaging, but not with ultrasound alone (OR 1.01 95%CI 0.93–1.09).ConclusionsThis study demonstrated that type of diagnostic imaging is associated with delays to surgery, especially in those requiring CT scan. In addition, complications and hospital costs are increased in this group. Clinicians could consider ultrasound as the first imaging modality to facilitate more timely surgery and reduced costs.

Dietary diversity and nutrient adequacy among women in Bosomtwe District, Ghana.

The sustainable development goals seek to end all forms of malnutrition of women of reproductive age (WRA) by 2030. As such, recent data on nutrient adequacy are needed to aid in tracking progress. However, data on specific dietary nutrient intakes includes only iron, folate, vitamin A, and vitamin B12 in Ghana. Therefore, women's dietary diversity score (W-DDS) is often used as a proxy measure of nutrient adequacy. It is hypothesised that there is no association between W-DDS and Nutrient Adequacy among WRA in peri-urban Ghana. Hence, this research evaluated the associations between W-DDS and nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and assessed the determinants of mean nutrient adequacy ratio (MAR) in the Bosomtwe District of Ghana. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted, and data collected on anthropometry, food insecurity, socio-demographic characteristics and dietary intake using the 24-hour recall from 407 WRA. In all, 21 nutrients were assessed. The mean age, W-DDS, and MAR were 29.0 ± 6.7 years, 5.3 ± 1.9, and 0.65 ± 0.19 respectively. The NAR were generally high for the macronutrients as compared to micronutrients and the nutrients with low NAR included vitamin C (0.27 ± 0.19), vitamin A (0.15 ± 0.23), vitamin B12 (0.54 ± 0.32), calcium (0.28 ± 0.20), zinc (0.52 ± 0.23) and iron (0.57 ± 0.28) - signifying the WRA may be consuming monotonous carbohydrate-based diet. The hierarchical multivariable linear regression found a significant association between W-DDS and MAR after controlling for confounders (β = 0.404, p < 0.001). The determinants of MAR were ethnicity (β = 0.110, p = 0.006) and body mass index (β = 0.189, p < 0.001). This study supports the use of W-DDS as a proxy indicator of nutrient adequacy. Strategies meant to address nutrient inadequacies should be adaptable to different ethnic groups and overweight-reducing strategies should be incorporated into broader nutrition initiatives.

Access to urban community mental health services: does geographical distance play a role?

Mental health challenges are a pressing concern in Australia, which account for a significant portion of the disease burden and economic costs, yet a substantial number of those affected do not utilise necessary professional support. This study evaluates distance decay effect on adults' community mental health services in North Metropolitan Western Australia and explores factors influencing service use. Data were extracted from the Mental Health Information Data Collections including the records of consumers receiving face-to-face services from the Community Mental Health Clinics in the North Metro Health Service during March 2022 to March 2023. Additionally, socio-demographic information for each suburb and population data were obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The distance between residential suburbs and clinic locations was calculated. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the characteristics of the study population. A hierarchical linear regression analysis was used to explore whether the distance of suburb to the nearest community clinic was related to service utilisation. A total of 3,453 consumers received direct services across the North Metro Health Service Community Mental Health Clinics. Findings highlighted the impact of proximity to clinics on service utilisation, with suburbs closer to clinics exhibiting higher visit rates (p = 0.004). The data also showed a strong positive correlation between gender (percentage of females in the suburb) and living in socially and economically disadvantaged areas with consumer visits per thousand residents. These findings underscore the importance of addressing accessibility barriers and tailoring mental health services to meet the diverse needs of the community.
