Heavy metals in perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) from two acidified lakes in the salpausselk� esker area in Finland

Hg concentrations in muscle and Cd, Pb, Al, Zn and Fe concentrations in muscle, liver and kidney ofPerca fluviatilis from two acidified lakes in the Salpausselka esker area in Southern Finland were studied. The metal concentrations in perch from the Tiilijarvi lakes were similar to those in other acidified Finnish lakes. Only Hg concentrations correlated strongly with the age and size of perch. The need for age correction in studies on the Hg concentrations on perch was noticed. The highest concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn occured in kidney and those of Al and Fe in liver.

Mercury uptake patterns of biota in a seasonally anoxic northern California Reservoir

Biotic uptake of mercury (Hg) in Davis Creek Reservoir, California increased dramatically in conjunction with the entrainment of anoxic hypolimnetic water into the mixed layer. This indicated a seasonal pulse increase of bioavailable Hg associated with thermal destratification. The effect was more pronounced in juvenile bass (70–200% seasonal increases in muscle Hg concentration), as compared to adults (15–25% increases), and was most distinct in zooplankton, which spiked to concentrations of 3–6 mg/kg, dry weight, immediately following fall destratification (130–270% seasonal increases over pre-fall levels). In addition to the general buildup of methyl Hg in the hypolimnion under anoxic conditions, a dense layer of photosynthetic anaerobic bacteria just beneath the thermocline is implicated as a potentially important seasonal source of methyl Hg to reservoir fish. Hg increases in juvenile and adult fish correspond to late summer and fall entrainment of upper hypolimnetic water, while zooplankton spike increases may be partially related to ingestion or adsorption of Hg-scavenging manganese oxides, which precipitate following full turnover. A simple and effective, syringe-based cold vapor atomic absorption method for total Hg is also described.

Mercury levels in Bonaparte's gulls (Larus Philadelphia) during autumn molt in the Quoddy region, New Brunswick, Canada

No significant between sex differences were detected in Hg concentrations in primary feathers, pectoral muscle, brain, liver, and kidney tissues of fall migrating juvenile and second-year Bonaparte's gulls (Larus Philadelphia) collected in the Quoddy region. Adults showed sexual differences only in the first 5 primary feathers, and in muscle, kidney and brain. Differences in Hg concentrations among age groups were reflected in the primary feathers and body tissues, but as the molt progressed, Hg concentrations decreased as they converged toward a minimum asymptotic Hg level for each tissue. This suggests that the body burden of Hg was reduced through its redistribution from the body tissues into the growing feathers. Mercury concentrations in premolt head feathers (pre-egg-laying) did not vary significantly between adult females and males, whereas Hg concentrations in postmolt feathers (post-egg-laying) were significantly lower in females, suggesting that egg-laying was also a route for Hg elimination. After the completion of the molt, the new feathers contained most of the body burden of Hg (93.0% in adults).
