Redox flow polymer electrolyte fuel cells (RFFCs) employing heteropolyanions (HPAs) as cathode redox mediators enable continuous power generation through the electrochemical reduction of the HPAs at the carbon cathode and subsequent reoxidation of the reduced-form HPAs in the cathode tank. Currently, effective reoxidation methods are required to achieve both high performance and long-term stability. Heteropolyanions such as α–[PW12O40]3– and α–[SiVW11O40]5– have increased reoxidation rates in the presence of radical species. In this study, fuel cell performance is investigated by adding Fe3+ and Cu2+ to the aqueous solution of [PV3Mo9O40]6–, which is used as a catholyte in RFFCs to increase the concentration of radicals in the system. Current–voltage measurements show that the added metal cations in the catholyte increase the power density. A temporary improvement in cell performance is observed during a prolonged current passage test.
