At the present t ime the theory of the chromat ic i ty of organic dyes, par t icu lar ly dyes of the cyanine se r i e s , has succeeded in the solution of a number of problems. The effect of the length of the chromophore on the color of dyes has been elucidated [1-3]. The role of auxochromic atoms or groups and the r e lationship between the electronic charac te r of the substituents, their position in the molecule, and the dye color have been established [2-9]. The reasons for deviations from the additivity rule in the case of unsymmet r i ca l s a l t fo rm dyes [10-14], the regular i t ies of the color of intraionized dyes [15-21], and the effect of s te r ic factors [14, 22, 23] have been ascer ta ined.
