USE OF THE HEROIC JOURNEY NARRATIVE IN THE DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW AND TREATMENT WITH FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The aim: To explore and corroborate personal and family narratives within the framework of “heroic journey”, delineate function of the narrative in the diagnosis and treatment of families of children with special needs, and to describe the process of improving psychological well-being of these families. Materials and methods: The study material consisted of articles on the subject found in American and international databases (Springer, Thompson ISI’s Web of Science, Scopus and PsycINFO, Google Scholar), using keywords “family and child psychotherapy”, “heroic journey”, “differentially able”, “attachment”, “narrative”, “therapeutic storytelling”. Two case vignettes, parents of a) a special-needs adult and b) a pre-teen psychotherapeutic patient, illustrate application of the heroic journey narrative in psychotherapeutic treatment. Conclusions: Formation of the narrative identity is simultaneously the ends and the means: while a parent is encouraged to tell the story repeatedly over time, a new narrative identity emerges. Purpose, roles, patterns, and the structure of the storytelling process are outlined. Increased coherence of the family stories leads to strengthening attachment patterns. Using personal and family narratives for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment; incorporating and interpreting stories told in treatment can become a useful tool in the clinicians’ toolbox.

“Say Cheese”: Family Photos, Modern Malay Masculinity and Family Narrative in Some Malaysian Films

Family photographs are often used as a prop in a set-up of a family home in a film. Employing visual culture approach, I would argue that through the use of family portraits both in figurative and artefactual forms, the narrative about family is often unravelled, challenged and subsequently validated. A close textual analysis of three P. Ramlee’s films that mark the dawn of modernism in the immediate post-independence Malaya and the formation of Malaysia in 1963 as a case study, this paper asks the following questions: What types of narratives are created through the display of family portraits? How do these family portraits reflect the changing conceptions of the institution of the family especially pertaining to modern Malay masculinity? And, how do family photographs inform family narratives? The analysis finds that, on one hand, family portraits are used to narrate the exteriorization of masculinity in trouble by revealing its castration anxiety. On the other, they also point to “the hero journey archetype” that apotheosizes masculine dominance as proven by the films’ happy ending. The implication of this study lies in the way family photographs in films can be understood not merely as props, but in visual culture sense, as locating the source of the conflict of modern Malay masculinity in the family itself. Although family portraits in these films are meant to be innocuous to Malay masculinity in crisis, it is ideologically a folie de grandeur about the family and what it means for the nation in transition. MONOMYTH: THE HERO’S STRUGGLE OF EZIO AUDITORE IN OLIVER BOWDEN’S ASSASSIN’S CREED RENAISSANCE NOVEL

Monomyth as known as hero’s journey was created to define the patterns of stages to become heroes. Every part of the stages consists challenges that force hero struggling to complete the stages. The form of struggle itself is variety depends on the condition and situation based on hero’s background. This research intended to find the hero’s struggle and hero’s journey that appeared in Ezio’s heroic journey. In this research, the researcher analyzed one of the characters from Assassin’s Creed Renaissance novel. In specific, a character, named Ezio Auditore, was analyzed through hero’s journey theory. The data were analyzed with hero’s struggle theory by George R. Goethals and Scott T. Allison, and hero’s journey theory by Joseph Campbel. The data were generated from the actions, dialogues, and other’s character’s narrations as well as Ezio’s struggle through his journey to become a hero. In conclusion, the research revealed that Ezio experienced all three struggles that mentioned by Goethals and Allison, those are pain and hardship, vulnerability and weakness, and evil encounter. It also matched eleven stages from seventeen stages of hero’s journey by Joseph Campbell, those are the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, the crossing of the first threshold, the road of trials, the meeting with the goddess, woman as the temptress, atonement with the father, apotheosis, the ultimate boon, and the crossing of the return threshold. Finally, the conclusion can be drawn is that the findings above strengthen the fact that Ezio Auditore in Assassin’s Creed Renaissance is a heroic story.

Gerçek bir alp olan Salur Kazan; psişesinin kuytularını keşfetmeye, aydınlanmaya ve bilge bir lider olmaya kendisi talip olur. Hikâyenin sonunda Kazan, ejderhayı yener böylece benliğini tanıyıp bireyleşme evrelerini başarıyla tamamlayarak zafere ulaşmış olur. Heroic Self-discovery of the Shepherd in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist

This paper examines the heroic self-discovery of a common shepherd in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist (1988) through the concept of popular culture. Santiago, the protagonist, abandons his home and family in teenage for a mysterious hidden treasure. What are the reasons that make him to undertake an adventurous journey from the known to the unknown land? So this paper draws on ideas from Marshall W. Fishwick and Joseph Campbell to respond the shepherd’s journey in order to substantiate his expedition as an adventure of the hero. Santiago’s journey of self- discovery can be analyzed in the theoretical frame of the hero journey and the quest of myth. Therefore, Santiago’s journey from Andalusia to Africa in search of a hidden treasure is uncommon because he begins his journey in a response to an exotic recurring dream where a child summons him to the Pyramids of Egypt. This is the reason why his journey differs from the celebrities, artists, politicians, and mythical heroes.

A Hero’s Journey in Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One

This research emphasizes the use of the monomyth concept in Ernest Cline's Ready Player One novel. The researcher chooses the related novel because of the heroic theme that embodied within the novel. The purpose of this research is to analyze the heroic adventure of Wade Watts in Cline's novel. To analyze the concept of the hero's journey in Cline's Ready Player One , the researcher uses the monomyth concept based on Campbell's 'Hero with the Thousand Faces Commemorative Edition' (2004). There were several studies related to the hero's journey; most of many researchers use monomyth theory by Christopher Vogler. Meanwhile, in this article, the researcher uses Joseph Campbell's monomyth concept, which has seventeen monomythic stages with more detailed and elaborate on the explanation compared to Vogler. Therefore the step of the heroic journey can be well delivered to the reader. Working on this research, the researcher uses a descriptive approach to the qualitative method. Based on the final result of the research, the researcher concludes that the main character indeed depicted as a hero, and the monomyth concept is also applied in Ready Player One novel.

Her multi-media performance work as alter ego Dynasty Handbag has spanned fifteen years and been presented at such institutions as MOCA Los Angeles, PS1, Joe's Pub, The Kitchen, REDCAT, The Broad Museum, Hammer Museum, New Museum of Contemporary Art—New York, among others. She has been heralded by the New York Times as "the funniest and most pitch perfect performance seen in years" and "outrageously smart, grotesque and innovative" by The New Yorker. She has written and produced seven evening-length performance pieces and countless short works that have been performed in clubs and venues internationally. The Slave Narrative in African-American Literature: A Study of Solomon Northup, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs

DOI: 10.7176/JLLL/65-03 Publication date: February 29 th 2020 Between 1770 when Ukawsaw Gronniosaw's work announced the birth of the African-American literary tradition and 1860, the most dominant form of narrative focused on the experience of slavery as encountered by blacks in the United States. Although identifiable as a unique genre of its own, the typical slave narrative is essentially a form of autobiography. Generally speaking, an autobiography is a self portrait narrative construed and constructed by the subject himself. Precisely, between 1820 and 1860, there were a wide range of publications by Afro-Americans on America's peculiar institution. These publications exposed in details their complex ethnical and psychological orientation toward slavery, demanding in very strict terms, the abolition of the Southern tyranny. It was these collective utterances that made up what the Afro-American writer, Arma Bontemps, calls an ""American genre" of literary narrative, otherwise known as "Slave narrative" (See Ogude 30 -31). Written by ex-slaves, the narratives reveal a common pattern of representation, revealing the author's circumstances and experiences under servitude, his heroic journey from slavery to freedom as well as his subsequent identification with the abolitionist cause, For instance, in the preface to her Narrative, Linda Brent aimed at arousing the members of the public, particularly, the women to rise up against the institution of slavery in the South in the spirit of abolitionist cause. Thus she says: I have not written my experience in order to attract attention to myself; on the contrary, it would have been more pleasant to me to have been silent about my own history. Neither do I come to excite sympathy for my own sufferings. But I do earnestly desire to arouse the women of the North to a realizing sense of the condition of two millions of women at the South, still in bondage, suffering what I suffered, and most of them far worse. I want to add my testimony to that of able pens to convince the people of the free states what slavery really is. Only by experience can anyone realize how deep and dark and foul is that pit of abomination (6). For our purpose, our focus in the present essay is to undertake a comparative study of three Afro-American slave narratives namely Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, An American Slave by Frederick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, by Harriet Jacobs. In doing these specific and crucial aspects of the narratives such as: region of servitude, life in the plantation, Master-slave relationship, religion and slavery, and education and slave emancipation will be highlighted and discussed. This is finally capped with a conclusion. An elaborate specification and description of the region of servitude involved is a fundamental aspect of the three slave narratives considered here. The three narratives focus on those Southern states of the United State of America characteristically branded slave states. In the slave states, agricultural economy prevailed. There were large-scale cotton, corn, sugar cane and tobacco plantations, where slaves were deployed to work under conditions of servitude.

Gilgamesh: The First Tragic Man

ABSTRACT Studying myths with psychoanalytic understanding is an attempt as old as psychoanalysis itself. Being the oldest written story, the Epic of Gilgamesh narrates the heroic journeys and the desperate search for the immortality of Sumerian semi-legendary king, Gilgamesh. In the present article, the main themes of the epic, comprising fellowship and fear of death, were analysed through self-psychological concepts of twinship selfobject needs and the transformations of narcissism. One of the major schools of psychoanalysis, self-psychology, investigates and understands human experiences from the perspective of selfobject experiences in which the psychological functions of selfobjects are utilized to preserve cohesiveness, vitality, and harmony of the self as extensively described by Heinz Kohut and other self-psychologists.

Virtual Reality Design for Stroke Rehabilitation.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability, and with the stroke survivor population rising in most countries it is increasingly difficult to provide optimal treatment to patients once they return home. Assistive technology solutions can potentially contribute to meeting demand, and also be cost effective. In this chapter, we consider the design and development of engaging serious virtual reality (VR) games for upper arm stroke rehabilitation. Fundamental design principles are summarised and related to our experience of creating game-based VR rehabilitation. The application of ideas from psychology, particularly behavioural change and flow theory are discussed, as well as related learning and gamification principles. We address how to manage differences between people through design, user profiling, and intelligent dynamic system behaviour, and we also explore how to account for variation in stroke survivor capability and personality. The idea of a hero's journey as a metaphor for stroke recovery is introduced and we discuss how this metaphor may guide system design, its relationship to game design principles, and how patient narratives and embedded stories might support engagement with treatment. An overview of our previous work is summarised and we discuss how our experience and increased knowledge and capability has informed improved approaches to development processes. Finally, our approach is illustrated with reference to a recent EU project.

Heroic Journey of Katniss Everdeen in Suzanne Collins' Novel &lt;em&gt;Catching Fire&lt;/em&gt;

This research aims to reveal the journey of Katniss Everdeen by using monomyth cycle in Suzanne Collins’ novel Catching Fire (2009). This research used the literary criticism that employs the monomyth cycle of Joseph Campbell. The monomyth theory was used to explore Katniss’ heroic journey within the novel Catching Fire. All data were classified into the following stages of monomyth cycle: departure, initiation, and return. Each stage represented the development of Katniss’s traits during her journey. From the analysis, it was discovered that Katniss began her journey by adapting herself in Victor’s Village after winning the 74th Hunger Games. She began her journey after President Snow provided her a challenge to convince him to reduce the uprising acts in each District. She refused to return home since she must rescue Peeta. Therefore, this paper concludes that this novel can be a continuity step of Katniss’ Journey for transforming herself to be a heroine at the end of her Journey.

Theoretical Study of The Life Story Narrative Personality Dynamics Based on Archetype in Indonesian Context Entrepreneurs

Understanding personality development of entrepreneurs is important in current entrepreneurial research. Previous studies have mentioned some perspectives towards a scientific understanding of entrepreneurship, through identification and in-depth examination of personality characteristics. These studies show that individual's function as a totality of personal characteristics (which involve biological, psychological, and cultural levels related to personal narratives) is needed. Some experts point out that success can be explained in the dynamics of the daily journey of the business persons than in trying to explain them into personality categories. The growth of entrepreneurial personality can be understood in accordance with the identity of the community and local culture. The wholeness of a person being an entrepreneur is a process of forming and revealing the development of an entrepreneurial personality. Personality growth will be revealed along the journey of life, following the same pattern in a narrative life story that is influenced by socio-cultural aspects. These patterns can be expressed in archetype. Entrepreneurs also share a set of cultural and social values, some of which are based on the values held by the community. However, research on entrepreneurial personality as a whole in the context of Indonesian culture, is still needed This study aims to look at entrepreneurship as the dynamic’s perspective of the personality narrative life stories and archetype of the cultural context in Indonesia. In addition, this study seeks non-economic factors, such as entrepreneurial personality and culture, affect the dynamics of the performance of a startup business. Through the study of archetype theory and narrative life story, it can be proposed a measuring tool that can explain the concept of entrepreneurial archetype personality in the Indonesian context. This archetype personality measurement tool uses a life story perspective that sees the dynamics of entrepreneurial journey as an archetype hero journey

Looking for a Hero: Masters of the Dew, La Source, and the Quest for Water in Haiti

This article focuses in part on Patrick Shen’s 2012 documentary La Source, which recounts the return of Josue Lajeunesse from the United States to Haiti, his country of origin. His mission is to help his hometown find a dependable supply of clean water following the January 2010 earthquake. I compare this documentary to Jacques Roumain’s 1943 novel Gouverneurs de la rosée, (Masters of the Dew). Taken by itself, Shen’s documentary is an uplifting snapshot of a valiant man’s heroic efforts to help his homeland; in light of Haitian literary history, however, La Source assumes a different tenor: Masters of the Dew depicts a similar, heroic journey by a Haitian to find a dependable supply of clean water for his hometown, albeit decades prior to the events in Shen’s documentary. This article compares these two texts and examines how they signal evolving visions of heroism within a Haitian cultural context. I argue that—when viewed jointly—the type of heroism in one text casts doubt on the heroism of the other.
