Toward a holistic hermeneutic and preaching in a divided world

Preachers’ finding a hermeneutical and practical bridge in preaching could bring evangelicals and progressives together for productive discussion. After a brief survey on the history of biblical interpretation, highlighting trends that have led to today’s divisions in interpretive approaches among Christians, I engage with the writings of contemporary scholars and principles of Aristotelian rhetoric. Then, a reflection on Luke 18:35–43 facilitates a theological and hermeneutical dialogue using the insights of both theological spectrums and leads to two practical hermeneutical suggestions for holistic preaching: using literary criticism to read and interpret the focal text with an eye to the “bigger” picture and applying reader-response interpretation to bring in the theological perspectives of those in the community.

Translation Criticism as a Dialogue. A Hermeneutic Model

In this article, I reflect on the productivity of hermeneutic translation criticism, focusing on literary translation. I pose the question whether the hermeneutic mode of translation analysis and evaluation – largely based on the premises of Romantic art criticism – has the potential to make a significant contribution to contemporary discussions on the functional model of translation criticism. My argument is that the source of the productivity (and functionality) of translation criticism is dialogicity – a feature that can be considered fundamental in the case of hermeneutics. Following the dialogical hermeneutics of F. Schlegel, F. Schleiermacher and H.-G. Gadamer, as well as H.R. Jauß’s aesthetics of reception, I formulate some general postulates regarding a hermeneutic critique of literary translations. This critical mode is interrogative: it locates and poses questions that are answered by the examined texts. The critic’s questions include those about the original and for the original, about the translator and for the translator, as well as about the reader and for the reader. Finally, I demonstrate cases in which a critical dialogue crystallizes around literary translations. It is a dialogue that can be shaped and interpreted by the postulated hermeneutic translation criticism.

JUDICIAL ACTIVISM ON THE MERIT OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

The present work in article format analyzes the concepts, applications and repercussions extracted between the terms Judicial Activism, Administrative Merit and Administrative Discretion. The objective is to examine, explain well, signify, separate and, where possible, correlate the three institutes above. To this end, a brief literature review was carried out on the Constitutional Principles Applicable to the study and research themes: Legality, Judicial Control of Public Administration and Jurisdictional Inalienability; as well as - by the same bibliographical methodology - of the trio indicated in the first paragraph. The diagnosed data revealed that they are distinct legal spaces and contents, however relatable to each other; above all for a skillful technical and hermeneutic dialogue in the light of the Federal Constitution and the other regulations of the Brazilian Legal Order.

This study aims to explain dialogical hermeneutics, one of the scientific paradigms that can bridge the confusion of thinking in explaining the relationship between literature and reality/history. The material object used is Fiction and History of Dialogue, while the formal object is the dialogical hermeneutic paradigm in the book. The purpose of this study is to describe the basic assumptions; model; and the concepts that make up dialogic hermeneutics. The theoretical framework and method used as the basis for the analysis are Thomas Khun's thoughts related to paradigms. The results of the research show that Fiction and Dialogue History books criticize in discussing fiction which is dominated by mimetic and semiotic concepts as well as history which is seen as something that is often contrasted with fiction. Junus offers an alternative idea in the form of dialogue (hermeneutics) as a new way of looking at the relationship between fiction and history/reality. Junus uses an analogy model to see the relationship between fiction and history/reality. The concepts put forward include the Concept of Definition of Fiction; The Nature of Reality in Stories; Fiction and Heurmenetics; Fiction Shapes Reality; Perspective of Fiction and Reality of Writers and Readers; and Fiction and History.

The primordial ethics of Emmanuel Lévinas, the dialogical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer, applied phenomenology, contextualism and constricted fallibilism are some of the inspirations that Orange transfers to the trauma clinic. In this paper we will explore the meaning of these sensibilities that seek to enlighten the analyst in his untamed task.

In the presented article, the Sacred Text, which is the core of theological research, is considered as the Speech of the Most High, addressed directly to the theologian-researcher, who is ready for a “hermeneutic dialogue” with the living Word and is ca-pable of reflecting on the depths of its meaning. To conduct the presented research, an integrative approach was applied, which consists in understanding the philosophi-cal, cultural and religious hermeneutic concepts. Particular attention is paid to the re-ligious hermeneutical tradition of Orthodoxy and Islam. The principle of the herme-neutic circle (spiral) in biblical hermeneutics is considered; comprehension of spiritual experience in the Orthodox religious tradition; principles of the Sufi hermeneutical tradition and Sufi communication studies. In addition to scientific concepts, frag-ments of the description of the personal feelings of researchers that arise when work-ing with cultural and historical monuments are analyzed. For a deeper understanding of the theologian's inner feelings that arise in the process of their contact with the Sa-cred Text, the process of establishing a non-verbal connection between the reader and the author of an ordinary book or an ancient manuscript is analyzed. Further, the spe-cial ontological status of the Sacred Text is considered, which makes it possible to es-tablish a connection with the Almighty, and the hidden rules of reading (recitation) of the Koran proposed by the medieval Muslim thinker al-Ghazali are given, the ob-servance of which can lead the reader to a “hermeneutic dialogue” with the Sacred text. Then the idea of a hermeneutic spiral is analyzed, the movement along which can lead to the realization of the Event of the soul (spirit), shifting the framework of world perception, which leads to the fulfillment of an epistrophe and the experience of metanoia, which are the most important conditions for approaching the knowledge of a true transcendent being. The paper proposes consideration of the possibility of expanding the field of theological research by presenting the world as a Sacred Text (Primitive Manuscript), which will allow a somewhat different look at the "core of the methodology of theology", significantly enriching the scope of the theologian's scientific activity.

The Hermeneutics of Polarized Ideologies. Conflict, (Ir)rationality and Dialogue

This article devises a social hermeneutical framework to make sense of the problem of the conflict of polarized ideologies. First, it discusses the problem of irrationality in belief and behavior, arguing for a contextual and non-reductionist account of rationality. Second, it shows how a social hermeneutical approach can provide a useful toolbox for social epistemology. Third, drawing from Paul Ricœur’s notions of the conflict of interpretations and of constitutive and pathological ideologies, it redescribes pathological ideologies as totalizing systems of beliefs in which subjects fall under the spell of a mechanism of hermeneutical delusion, leaving them in a state of ideological bias. Finally, it discusses the possibility of tackling the problem of hermeneutical delusion and polarized ideologies through fostering hermeneutical dialogue geared towards mutual understanding.

Based on the text by V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, the article analyzes the daily life of the Kola society in the early 70s of the XIX century in order to explain the reasons for relative backwardness in comparison with neighboring societies of Scandinavia, as well as understanding the hidden reserves for development. When implementing this goal, the economic and social foundations, as well as the mentality of the Kola society, are consistently considered. At the same time, through hermeneutical dialogue, hidden information is extracted from the text that is not obvious to the author himself. It allows us to understand what the freedom-loving nature of the Kolyans, their solidarity was expressed in. This allows us to understand where the forces that could be involved in the conditions of socio-cultural changes that led to the settlement of the Russian North in the twentieth century were hidden. As a result, a certain intention of consciousness can be developed, which will allow recognizing great potential opportunities for development in the present.

Paranoia and the law: Martin Luther and critical theory in hermeneutical dialogue

AbstractCritical theory represents the dominant theoretical framework currently deployed in the humanities, yet it is a framework that many theologians have been slow to engage. The recent ‘postcritical’ turn in critical theory, however, has striking affinities with several key concerns of Christian theology, as is becoming increasingly recognised. This article suggests that dialogue between critical theory and theology can be mutually beneficial, particularly in relation to hamartiology. It argues that there is a strong parallel between Martin Luther's theology of the law and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's account of critical theory's ‘paranoid’ hermeneutics. It then draws on this parallel to diagnose a weakness in Sedgwick's ‘postcritical’ response to such paranoia, and suggests that this weakness can be repaired by a specifically theological approach to hermeneutics.

The history of philosophy as a hermeneutic and ontological project. Review of the Russian translation of the book “History of Greek Philosophy” by William Guthrie

The article contains a review of the book “History of Greek Philosophy” by William Guthrie. It is argued that the true history of philosophy is the recreation of the ideas of the past in a modern context, their actualization by inscribing them as elements into a larger whole or by means of a hermeneutic dialogue aimed at obtaining truth. It is precisely an example of hermeneutic dialogue that Guthrie's work is. The third volume of Guthrie's six-volume study on the Sophists and Socrates was chosen as the main text under review. It is shown that Guthrie was able to actualize the relativistic concepts of the sophists and demonstrate their connection with the teachings and personality of Socrates, who, thanks to his concept of inductive search for definitions of concepts, became a key figure on the path of creating the classical philosophical systems of Plato and Aristotle: theories of universal eidos and forms.

Fragmented selves: a first person account on trauma and dissociation

This first person account on recovery from trauma and dissociation has been written by a social scientist who went through a long journey in mental health care before receiving adequate treatment. A steady therapeutic relationship paired with a different resources of the Comprehensive Resource Model eventually provided enough stability to overcome dissociation and process trauma. Although traditional psychotherapy is based on psychoanalytic framework, it was helpful to look for framings that affirm a social and hermeneutic dialogue. This paper provides reflections that have proven to be helpful for the author and that might be helpful for others with similar problems.

The historical and hermeneutic dialogue between Nekrasov and Dostoevsky acquires special significance as an opportunity for a new dialogue between believers and non-believers, which is necessary for general social and cultural development. Nekrasov was actually a believing Christian, but he received a lot of resonance in Soviet education as a bearer of secular ideals. His new consideration today, after the religious renaissance of Russian culture, is an interesting and promising task. At the same time, Dostoevsky's question of «eschatological antinomianism» turns out to be decisive also in this context: the need to sanctify suffering and the necessary hope for its overcoming are two sides of the same ontological and epistemological paradox, which is always valid for all Christians as well as for all thinkers, preoccupied by common human destinies.

Liturgische Theologie als Praxisreflexion. Qualitative Forschung unter Benediktineroblaten

The relation between liturgical practice and theological reflection is by no means self-evident, especially in a secularized society. How can academic theology be rooted in liturgical life, and how can liturgical involvement play a vital role in the task of theology to reflect on liturgical tradition and practice? Liturgical theology is an attempt to bridge that gap between practice and reflection. The voice of practitioners as part of theological discourse is an important ingredient for this hermeneutical dialogue. Monastic life offers a space where liturgical and theological life can meet, especially in Benedictine abbeys. There, liturgical experience (theologia prima) is directly linked to theological reflection (theologia secunda), which leads to critical impulses for both, liturgy and theology, inside and outside abbey walls. Today, monastic communities are shrinking, but there is a growing interest in liturgical life among affiliated members of abbeys: the number of Benedictine oblates are growing. What is their view on liturgical experience, reflection and criticism? In this article, I present findings from a qualitative survey among fifty-three Dutch Benedictine oblates. Their answers are analyzed by coding procedures and interpreted theologically. They form an example of liturgical theology as practice-reflection.

Beyond Lecturing: An Introduction to Gadamer's Dialogical Hermeneutics With Insights Into Health Professions Education

PurposeThis text has emerged from frequent in-depth conversations about theory and practice in teaching and learning among colleagues in Faculties of Dentistry, Medicine, and Education. Our intention is to expand those face-to-face conversations beyond the walls of our university. MethodMore specifically, through a conversational hermeneutic approach we endeavor to provide an introduction through accessible teaching approaches and effective learning that might enhance health education and promote student's and educator's experiences. ResultsAmong topics of our interest, lecturing, which still is pervasive in higher education, has constituted a matter of much debate in the group. Our conversations have not only covered the pros and cons of lecture approaches, and other alternative or complementary teaching strategies, but also, and importantly, theoretical and philosophical perspectives in education. Discussion/conclusionIn this article we invite the readers to join us in, we hope, a fruitful conversation about lecturing and Gadamer's dialogical hermeneutics as a means to encourage meaningful conversations within the classroom.

이해를 위한 해석학적 대화 : 원효의 화쟁철학을 활용한 기독교, 불교, 동학의 기도문에 대한 연구

오늘날 우리 한국사회는 계층과 이해집단 사이의 분쟁과 갈등이 격화되고 있는 가운데, 종교는 비인간적이며 비사회적인 근본주의 신념은 물론 타종교를 스스럼없이 악으로 규정하며 스스로의 정체성에 모순되는 고립과 배제의 교리를 더욱 확산하면서, 사회적 분열과 갈등을 더욱 심화시키고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 종교적 갈등현상 속에서 종교간 이해와 소통을 위한 원리의 해석학적 담론을 제시하고 있다. 본 연구는 원효의 화쟁 철학을 방법론으로 활용하여 기독교, 불교, 동학 기도문의 서지학적 분석을 통한 대화와 소통의 해석학적 실험이다. 화쟁철학은 당시 동아시아와 신라시대에 백가쟁명처럼 난무하던 수많은 불교학설들을 중재하고 조정하였던 화회회통의 철학사상이었다. 원효는 화쟁철학과 자유로운 실천을 통해 갈등과 대립을 거침없이 풀어나가며, 특히 언어와 개념의 환상에서 벗어나 한 마음으로 돌아가게 한다. 이에 각 기도문이 고유성이 훼손되지 않으면서도 동시에 보편에 함몰되지 않는 화쟁을 통해 구체적인 대화와 소통의 마당을 열어간다. 그 틀 속에서, 연구자는 주기도문이 초월과 내재의 통합적 신앙을 주문하고 있는 지혜 기도문으로, 신에 대한 헌신과 자기초월을 통하여 신의 침묵과 같은 고통 가득한 삶의 현장에서 오히려 자아적 관심을 넘어 책임적 존재로 삶의 현장에 뛰어 들어 갈 것을 촉구하고 있음을 드러낸다. 그리고 공(空)과 연기(緣起)로 요약할 수 있는 반야심경은 철저한 부정개념들을 사용하여 역설적으로 동체대비(同體大悲)의 자비심으로 나아가라는 보살도(菩薩道)의 실천 명령으로 이해하고 있다. 또한 연구자는 동학 “21자 주문”이 도교적(道敎的) 세계관보다는 오히려 초월과 내재를 아우르며 사회변혁 및 인간개조를 동시에 지향하는 한국인들의 전통적인 선적(仙的) 심성을 그대로 반영하고 있음을 주장한다. 특히 “시천주 조화정”(侍天主 造化定)은 동학의 신관과 인간관이, 결국 역설적 반대일치의 논리구조를 바탕으로, 인간이 몸으로서의 존재가 비록 신은 아니지만, 동시에 몸의 현존 자체가 신으로부터 분리 존재하는 것도 아니라는 포월적 (包越的) 신관을 내포하고 있음을 강조한다. 특정한 문화적 역사적 상황 속에서 특정한 문화적 역사적 질문에 대한 반응과 해결책으로 주어진 각 기도문을 타인과의 대화를 위한 보편성의 마당으로 초청하기에는 다소간의 어려움이 있다. 그러나 연구자는 원효의 화쟁이 강조하는 초월적 언어관을 통하여, 종교의 교리적 사고방식에서 벗어나, 있는 그대로의 표현 속에 내포하고 있는 반대일치를 깨달음으로서, 유한과 무한, 긍정과 부정, 창조와 무위이화, 주체와 객체, 초월과 내재, 성과 속, 신성과 인간성 등이 결코 서로 대립되거나 모순된 것이 아니라는 사실과, 진정한 신앙적 체험이 사회적 소통과 화해의 촉매제가 될 수 있음을 주장하고 있다. 이를 통하여 연구자는 대화 주체들에게 상대의 진리체험을 있는 그대로 겸허하게 경청하고 서로를 보완적으로 보며, 특히 지구촌의 고통과 죄를 극복하고 갈등해소를 통해 공동행복을 추구하려는 구동존이(求同存異)의 연대와 협동, 그리고 진리의 무궁함과 신비로움에 끊임없이 귀를 기울이려는 빈 마음을 촉구하고 있다.

Liberal Citizenship and the Hermeneutics of Public Dialogue: A Rawlsian Perspective

Abstract Focusing on the topic of public dialogue between religiously theistic, quasi-religious, atheistic, and non-religious citizens in a liberal democracy, this paper develops a practical strategy of dialogue in the wake of Rawls’ Political Liberalism (1993). To set the stage for a rereading of Rawls, the chief points of liberal citizenship are outlined in critical dialogue with recent literature that urges citizens to abandon liberalism. While metaphysics, religious norms, and moral visions of the good are not bracketed by liberal regimes, it is true that liberal states nonetheless attempt to remain neutral in matters of religion and worship. This may yield many worldviews incommensurable with each other. Liberalism, then, as a political order, involves a pluralism of worldviews, some religious and some not. A hermeneutics of public dialogue can enable citizens to be reconciled with, rather than escape, the pluralism born of liberalism. I suggest the point of departure for such a hermeneutic lies in the vocabulary of Rawlsian “overlapping consensus.” Reconsidered in this light, overlapping consensus can open up the prospect of dialogue among citizenry in the public square in a manner that facilitates agreement and cooperation. This is due to the fact that overlapping consensus contrasts with the idea that when one converges on a policy, one must always do so for the same reason or theoretical justification. The paper concludes with the structure of a four-way dialogue that may result from the application of this hermeneutic.
