Earlier work on the relationship between rhetoric and hermeneutics defined rhetoric as a function occurring within the hermeneutical situation. This essay critiques that position, and argues that the hermeneutical act is in fact the inventional means through which a text, considered sacred, is transformed into a fitting response to a rhetorical situation.
