Homodyne-detection-based discrete-variable quantum key distribution with a heralded single-photon source

Discrete-variable quantum key distribution (DV-QKD) has recently been implemented using a homodyne detection system, and a notable secret key rate can be achieved by employing an ideal single-photon source. However, most QKD implementations employ practical light sources, including a phase-randomized weak coherent source and a heralded single-photon source, which occasionally produce multiphotons and are vulnerable to photon-number-splitting (PNS) attacks. In this work, we propose a three-decoy-state method using a heralded single-photon source for homodyne-detection-based DV-QKD, thus making it immune to PNS attacks with current technology. Our simulation results demonstrate that our proposed protocol can achieve high-speed and secure key distribution over metropolitan distances. Our work paves a cost-effective path to realize DV-QKD and further incorporate it into classical telecommunication networks.

Improved decoy-state quantum key distribution with uncharacterized heralded single-photon sources

Encoding system plays a significant role in quantum key distribution (QKD). However, the security and performance of QKD systems can be compromised by encoding misalignment due to the inevitable defects in realistic devices. To alleviate the influence of misalignments, a method exploiting statistics from mismatched basis is proposed to enable uncharacterized sources to generate secure keys in QKD. In this work, we propose a scheme on four-intensity decoy-state quantum key distribution with uncharacterized heralded single-photon sources. It only requires the source states are prepared in a two-dimensional Hilbert space, and can thus reduce the complexity of practical realizations. Moreover, we carry out corresponding numerical simulations and demonstrate that our present four-intensity decoy-state scheme can achieve a much higher key rate compared than a three-intensity decoy-state method, and meantime it can obtain a longer transmission distance compared than the one using weak coherent sources.

High-efficiency photon-number-resolving detector for improving heralded single-photon sources

Heralded single-photon sources (HSPS) intrinsically suffer from multiphoton emission, leading to a trade-off between the source’s single-photon quality and the heralding rate. A solution to this problem is to use photon-number-resolving (PNR) detectors to filter out the heralding events where more than one photon pair is created. Here, we demonstrate an improvement of a HSPS by heralding photons using a high-efficiency parallel superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (P-SNSPD) with PNR power. Specifically, we show a reduction in the of the heralded single photon by for a fixed pump power, or alternatively, an increase in the heralding rate by a factor of for a fixed . We also demonstrate that such a PNR device can reveal thermal photon-number statistics of unheralded photons, which is enabled by our ability to construct its full input–output response function. These results are possible thanks to our P-SNSPD architecture that ensures non-latching operation with no electrical crosstalk, which are essential conditions necessary to obtain the correct photon-number statistics and also faster recovery times, therefore enabling fast heralding rates. These results show that our efficient PNR P-SNSPD architecture can significantly improve the performance of HSPSs and can precisely characterize them, making these detectors a useful tool for a wide range of optical quantum information protocols.

Fiber-coupled plug-and-play heralded single photon source based on Ti:LiNbO3 and polymer technology.

A reliable, but cost-effective generation of single-photon states is key for practical quantum communication systems. For real-world deployment, waveguide sources offer optimum compatibility with fiber networks and can be embedded in hybrid integrated modules. Here, we present what we believe to be the first chip-size fully integrated fiber-coupled heralded single photon source (HSPS) module based on a hybrid integration of a nonlinear lithium niobate waveguide into a polymer board. Photon pairs at 810 nm (signal) and 1550 nm (idler) are generated via parametric down-conversion pumped at 532 nm in the LiNbO3 waveguide. The pairs are split in the polymer board and routed to separate output ports. The module has a size of (2 × 1) cm2 and is fully fiber-coupled with one pump input fiber and two output fibers. We measure a heralded second-order correlation function of g h(2)=0.05 with a heralding efficiency of η h=3.5% at low pump powers.

Quantum Key Distribution with a Continuous-Wave-Pumped Spontaneous-Parametric-Down-Conversion Heralded Single-Photon Source

Quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols utilize single photons for key exchanging. Heralded single-photon sources (HSPSs) with spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is a practical and effective way of producing single photons of high fidelity, bringing extra performance especially at long distances. A pulsed laser is usually used as the pump for HSPS QKD, but it has disadvantages in operational stability and practicality compared to a cw one. On the other hand, a precise model describing the performance of HSPS with a cw pump is still missing. It is inaccurate and unsafe to apply the key rate model of the pulse-pumped HSPS QKD directly to the cw one, and it also overlooks the timing jitter and dead time of the single-photon detectors. In this paper, we study the cw case in detail, including practical imperfections of the experimental instruments. Our model shows that a cw-pumped setup can reach a much longer transmission distance (31 % longer) than the fastest pulsed HSPS QKD system at present, together with other advantages such as higher operational stability and better spectral characteristics.

Benchmarking single-photon sources from an auto-correlation measurement

Here we argue that the probability that a given source produces exactly a single photon is a natural quantity to benchmark single-photon sources as it certifies the absence of multi-photon components and quantifies the efficiency simultaneously. Moreover, this probability can be bounded simply from an auto-correlation measurement — a balanced beam splitter and two photon detectors. Such a bound gives access to various non-classicality witnesses that can be used to certify and quantify Wigner-negativity, in addition to non-Gaussianity and P-negativity of the state produced by the source. We provide tools that can be used in practice to account for an imperfect beam splitter, non-identical and non-unit detection efficiencies, dark counts and other imperfections, take finite statistical effects into account without assuming that identical states are produced in all rounds, and optionally allow one to remove the detector inefficiencies from the analysis. We demonstrate the use of the proposed benchmark, non-classicality witness and measure using a heralded single-photon source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We report on an average probability that a single photon is produced ≥55% and an average measure of the Wigner negativity ≥0.004 with a confidence level of 1−10−10.

Improved Heralded Single-Photon Source with a Photon-Number-Resolving Superconducting Nanowire Detector

Deterministic generation of single photons is essential for many quantum information technologies. A bulk optical nonlinearity emitting a photon pair, where the measurement of one of the photons heralds the presence of the other, is commonly used with the caveat that the single-photon emission rate is constrained due to a trade-off between multiphoton events and pair emission rate. Using an efficient and low noise photon-number-resolving superconducting nanowire detector we herald, in real time, a single photon at telecommunication wavelength. We perform a second-order photon correlation ${g}^{2}(0)$ measurement of the signal mode conditioned on the measured photon number of the idler mode for various pump powers and demonstrate an improvement of a heralded single-photon source. We develop an analytical model using a phase-space formalism that encompasses all multiphoton effects and relevant imperfections, such as loss and multiple Schmidt modes. We perform a maximum-likelihood fit to test the agreement of the model to the data and extract the best-fit mean photon number $\ensuremath{\mu}$ of the pair source for each pump power. A maximum reduction of $0.118\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.012$ in the photon ${g}^{2}(0)$ correlation function at $\ensuremath{\mu}=0.327\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.007$ is obtained, indicating a strong suppression of multiphoton emissions. For a fixed ${g}^{2}(0)=7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, we increase the single pair generation probability by 25%. Our experiment, built using fiber-coupled and off-the-shelf components, delineates a path to engineering ideal sources of single photons.

Room‐Temperature Generation of Heralded Single Photons on Silicon Chip with Switchable Orbital Angular Momentum (Laser Photonics Rev. 16(12)/2022)

Orbital Angular Momentum In article number 2200388, Shan Zhang, Xue Feng, and colleagues have proposed and demonstrated a heralded single-photon source with switchable orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes on silicon chip. At room-temperature, the heralded single photons are generated through the nonlinear effect and transformed to 11 OAM modes by an OAM emitter, offering a practical platform for high-dimensional quantum information processing.

Ultrabright and narrowband intra-fiber biphoton source at ultralow pump power

Nonclassical photon sources of high brightness are key components of quantum communication technologies. We here demonstrate the generation of narrowband, nonclassical photon pairs by employing spontaneous four-wave mixing in an optically-dense ensemble of cold atoms within a hollow-core fiber. The brightness of our source approaches the limit of achievable generated spectral brightness at which successive photon pairs start to overlap in time. For a generated spectral brightness per pump power of up to 2 × 109 pairs/(s MHz mW) we observe nonclassical correlations at pump powers below 100 nW and a narrow bandwidth of 2π × 6.5 MHz. In this regime we demonstrate that our source can be used as a heralded single-photon source. By further increasing the brightness we enter the regime where successive photon pairs start to overlap in time and the cross-correlation approaches a limit corresponding to thermal statistics. Our approach of combining the advantages of atomic ensembles and waveguide environments is an important step toward photonic quantum networks of ensemble-based elements.

Efficient twin-field quantum key distribution with heralded single-photon source

Twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) can overcome the fundamental rate-loss limit in the point-to-point QKD without a quantum repeater, so as to realize key distribution over long distance. In general, weak coherent pulse (WCP) emitted from the attenuated laser is often used as the photon source for TF-QKD and its variants, however, the key generation rate and transmission distance may be restricted for TF-QKD protocols using this type of photon source as it contains a large proportion of vacuum part. Another candidate of photon source within reach of current technology is the heralded single-photon source (HSPS). In this paper, we propose two TF-QKD variants with HSPS and provide the analytical derivation of upper bounds of yields separately with active and passive decoy-state methods. Numerical simulations show that the active decoy-state TF-QKD with HSPS (referred to as Protocol (1) achieves higher secret key rate and tolerates more large transmission loss than the original TF-QKD with WCP source. However, since the active modulation of decoy intensities may leak additional information to the eavesdropper Eve, thus we extend the result of Protocol 1 and further propose a passive decoy-state TF-QKD with HSPS (referred to as Protocol (2). The simulation results demonstrate that the performance of Protocol 2 is close to the original active TF-QKD protocol, and its security and flexibility are further improved.

Heralded single-photon source based on an ensemble of Raman-active molecules

Light with high mutual correlations at different frequencies can be used to create heralded single-photon sources, which may serve as the basic elements of existing quantum cryptography and quantum teleportation schemes. One of the important examples in natural systems of light with high mutual correlations is the light produced by spontaneous Raman scattering on an ensemble of molecules. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using Raman light to create a heralded single-photon source. We show that when using Stokes scattered light for postselection of anti-Stokes scattered light, the latter may possess single-photon properties. We analyze the influence of various negative factors on the characteristics of such a heralded single-photon source, which include a time delay between Stokes and anti-Stokes photons, the finiteness of the correlation radius of an external source, and background radiation. We show that the low value of the second-order autocorrelation function of the single-photon source is preserved even when the flow of uncorrelated photons exceeds the flow of correlated photons in scattered Raman light by an order of magnitude.

Passive blind quantum computation with heralded single-photon sources

Blind quantum computation (BQC) is one of the most promising alternatives to solve the shortage of quantum resources in the implementation of quantum computations. However, in most reported studies on decoy-state BQCs, the source intensities are actively modulated, which, unfortunately, results in side-channel leakage and undermines system security. In this paper, we present a passive decoy-state BQC scheme with a heralded single-photon source that circumvents this problem skillfully, improving system security. Moreover, simulation results show that our passive scheme can even outperform other active schemes in the generation efficiency of blind states when using state-of-the-art equipment.

Single-Photon Storage in a Ground-State Vapor Cell Quantum Memory

Interfaced single-photon sources and quantum memories for photons together form a foundational component of quantum technology. Achieving compatibility between heterogeneous, state-of-the-art devices is a long-standing challenge. We built and successfully interfaced a heralded single-photon source based on cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion in ppKTP and a matched memory based on electromagnetically induced transparency in warm $^{87}$Rb vapor. The bandwidth of the photons emitted by the source is 370 MHz, placing its speed in the technologically relevant regime while remaining well within the acceptance bandwidth of the memory. Simultaneously, the experimental complexity is kept low, with all components operating at or above room temperature. Read-out noise of the memory is considerably reduced by exploiting polarization selection rules in the hyperfine structure of spin-polarized atoms. For the first time, we demonstrate single-photon storage and retrieval in a ground-state vapor cell memory, with $g_{c,\text{ret}}^{(2)}=0.177(23)$ demonstrating the single-photon character of the retrieved light. Our platform of single-photon source and atomic memory is attractive for future experiments on room-temperature quantum networks operating at high bandwidth.

Spectrally separable photon-pair generation in dispersion engineered thin-film lithium niobate.

Existing nonlinear-optic implementations of pure, unfiltered heralded single-photon sources do not offer the scalability required for densely integrated quantum networks. Additionally, lithium niobate has hitherto been unsuitable for such use due to its material dispersion. We engineer the dispersion and the quasi-phasematching conditions of a waveguide in the rapidly emerging thin-film lithium niobate platform to generate spectrally separable photon pairs in the telecommunications band. Such photon pairs can be used as spectrally pure heralded single-photon sources in quantum networks. We estimate a heralded-state spectral purity of >94% based on joint spectral intensity measurements. Further, a joint spectral phase-sensitive measurement of the unheralded time-integrated second-order correlation function yields a heralded-state purity of (86±5)%.

Spectrally multiplexed indistinguishable single-photon generation at telecom-band

Heralded single-photon source (HSPS) intrinsically suffers from the trade-off between the heralded single-photon rate and the single-photon purity. To break through this trade-off, one can apply multiplexing technology in different degrees of freedom that significantly improves the performance of the HSPS. Here, we propose a 1.5 μm chip-scale HSPS on lithium niobate on insulator by employing spectral multiplexing and active feed-forward spectral manipulating, and we demonstrate a proof-of-principle experiment with discrete fiber-based components. With continuous-wave laser pumping and three spectral modes multiplexed, our experimental results show that the spectral multiplexing improves the heralded single-photon rate by near threefold while keeping the g ( 2 ) ( 0 ) as low as 0.0006 ± 0.0001 at a measured single-photon rate of 3.1 kHz. By measuring the joint spectral intensity, we show that the spectral multiplexing and feed-forward control effectively erase the frequency correlation of photon pairs. Moreover, we implement the Hong–Ou–Mandel interference between the spectrally multiplexed single photons and photons from an independent weak coherence source, which indicates that the multiplexed single photons are highly indistinguishable after the spectral manipulation. Our results pave a way for on-chip scalable and high-performance HSPS with spectral multiplexing toward deterministic single-photon emission.

Optimization of quantum light sources and four-wave mixing based on a reconfigurable silicon ring resonator.

Being a key component on a photonic chip, the microring usually specializes in a certain nonlinear optical process and can not simultaneously meet different working conditions for different processes. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate a reconfigurable silicon microring resonator to act as a optimization strategy for both classical four-wave mixing and quantum light sources. Experimental results show that the four-wave mixing efficiency with continuous wave and pulsed pump can be both optimized to a high value well matching numerical analysis. A variety of quantum light sources - including the heralded single-photon source, two-photon source and multi-photon source - are demonstrated to present a high performance and their key parameters including the pair generation rates (PGR), the heralding efficiency (HE) and the coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR) are controllable and optimizable. Such tunable nonlinear converter is immune to fabrication variations and can be popularized to other nonlinear optical materials, providing a simple and compact post-fabrication trimming strategy for on-chip all-optical signal processing and photonic quantum technologies.

Imaging inspired characterization of single photons carrying orbital angular momentum

We report on an imaging-inspired measurement of orbital angular momentum (OAM) using only a simple tilted lens and an intensified charged coupled device camera, allowing us to monitor the propagation of OAM structured photons over distance, which is crucial for free-space quantum communication networks. We demonstrate the measurement of OAM orders as high as ls = 14 in a heralded single-photon source and show, for the first time, the imaged self-interference of photons carrying OAM in a modified Mach–Zehnder interferometer. The described methods reveal both the charge and order of a photon's OAM and provide a proof of concept for the interference of a single OAM photon with itself. Using these tools, we are able to study the propagation characteristics of OAM photons over a distance, which is important for estimating transport in free-space quantum links. By translating these classical tools into the quantum domain, we offer a robust and direct approach for the complete characterization of a twisted single-photon source, an important building block of a quantum network.

Reducing g(2)(0) of a parametric down-conversion source via photon-number resolution with superconducting nanowire detectors.

Multiphoton contributions pose a significant challenge for the realisation of heralded single-photon sources (HSPS) based on nonlinear processes. In this work, we improve the quality of single photons generated in this way by harnessing the photon-number resolving (PNR) capabilities of commercial superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs). We report a 13 ± 0.4% reduction of g(2)(τ = 0), even with a collection efficiency in the photon source of only 29.6%. Our work demonstrates the first application of the PNR capabilities of SNSPDs and shows improvement in the quality of an HSPS with widely available technology.

State preparation error tolerant quantum key distribution protocol based on heralded single photon source

In practical quantum key distribution systems, there inevitably exist errors in the quantum state preparation process due to imperfections in realistic equipment and devices. Those errors would lead to some security loopholes in the quantum key distribution systems. According to the work of Tamaki et al. (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.90.0523142014"><i>Phys. Rev. A</i> <b>90</b> 052314</ext-link>), here in this work we propose a state preparation error tolerant quantum key distribution protocol through using heralded single-photon sources. In this protocol, we characterize the size of the error in the preparation state of Alice and bring it into the security analysis, thereby avoiding possible security loopholes and improving the security of the system. Moreover, we take the three-intensity decoy-state method for example to introduce the method of constructing the model and estimating the parameters, and carry out corresponding numerical simulations. We make a comparison between the loss tolerant protocol with weak coherent source (WCS) and our present protocol using heralded single-photon source (HSPS). Simulation results show that under the same state preparation error, the key generation rate of the protocol based on WCS is higher than that of protocol based on HSPS at short transmission distances (e.g. less than 150 km). The main reason is that the detection efficiency of the local detector used in the latter scheme is low. However, in the case of long transmission distances (e.g. greater than 200 km), the key generation rate of scheme with WCS drops deeply, while the decline of the key generation rate of the present scheme is much flatter. As a result, the former can no longer generate keys after 211 km, while the latter can transmit a maximum distance of 228 km. Moreover, we also make a comparison between the present scheme and the GLLP protocol with HSPS. The simulation results show that the GLLP protocol with HSPS is very sensitive to the state preparation error and its key generation rate will rapidly decrease with the increase of the state preparation error. On the contrary, our present protocol shows almost no performance degradation under practical state preparation errors. It thus verify the robustness against the state preparation errors of our present work. In addition, in principle, the method can also be combined with the measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol and the twin-field quantum key distribution protocol to further increase the secure communication transmission distance that the present system can reach. Therefore, this work may provide an important reference value for the practical application of long-distance quantum secure communication in the near future.
