Evaluation of an Enzyme-Linked Magnetic Electrochemical Assay for Hepatitis a Virus Detection in Drinking and Vegetable Processing Water

Globally, waterborne viral infections significantly threaten public health. While current European Union regulations stipulate that drinking water must be devoid of harmful pathogens, they do not specifically address the presence of enteric viruses in water used for irrigation or food production. Traditional virus detection methods rely on molecular biology assays, requiring specialized personnel and laboratory facilities. Here, we describe an electrochemical sandwich enzyme-linked immunomagnetic assay (ELIME) for the detection of the hepatitis A virus (HAV) in water matrices. This method employed screen-printed electrodes as the sensing platform and utilized commercially available pre-activated magnetic beads to provide a robust foundation for the immunological reaction. The ELIME assay demonstrated exceptional analytical performance in only 185 min achieving a detection limit of 0.5 genomic copies per milliliter (g.c./mL) and exhibiting good reproducibility with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 7% in HAV-spiked drinking and processing water samples. Compared with the real-time RT-qPCR method described in ISO 15216-1, the ELIME assay demonstrated higher sensitivity, although the overall linearity of the method was moderate. These analytical attributes highlight the potential of the ELIME assay as a rapid and viable alternative for HAV detection in water used for agriculture and food processing.

Decreasing parvovirus B19 and hepatitis A nucleic acid test positivity rates in Canadian plasma donors following the initiation of COVID-19 restriction in March 2020.

In Canada, plasma sent for fractionation is tested for both parvovirus B19 (B19V) and hepatitis A virus (HAV). This study compared positivity rates of B19 and HAV nucleic acid tests (NATs) in Canadian plasma samples for the pre-COVID-19 restriction era (2015 to end of February 2020 [Q1] 2020) and the post-COVID-19 restriction era. Pooled EDTA plasma specimens were tested within 24 months of blood draw using the Procleix Panther System (Grifols Diagnostic Solutions Inc, San Diego, CA, USA) for B19V and HAV detection. Reactive pools were resolved by individual specimen testing. Between 1 January 2015, and 31 March 2022, 3,928,619 specimens from Canadian plasma donors were tested for B19V. For the same period, 3,922,954 specimens were tested for HAV. To account for a lag in specimen testing for up to 24 months, the data were divided into: (1) a pre-pandemic period (1 January 2015-31 March 2020; B19V tested n = 2,412,701, B19V NAT-positive n = 240 [0.01%], HAV tested n = 2,407,036, HAV NAT-positive n = 26 [0.001%]); (2) a two-year mixed-impact period (1 April 2020-31 March 2022; B19V tested n = 968,250, B19V NAT-positive n = 14 [0.001%], HAV tested n = 968,250, HAV NAT-positive n = 2 [0.0002%]); and (3) a pandemic-impact period (1 April 2022-31 March, 2023; B19V tested n = 597,668, B19V NAT-positive n = 3 [0.0005%], HAV tested n = 597,668, HAV NAT-positive n = 1 [0.0002%]). The percentage of B19V- and HAV-positive donations was significantly reduced from the pre-pandemic period to the pandemic-impact period.

Development of enhanced primer sets for detection of Norovirus and Hepatitis A in food samples from Guayaquil (Ecuador) by reverse transcriptase-heminested PCR

Norovirus (NV) is an infectious biological agent that causes gastrointestinal problems of the original nonbacterial appearance of foodborne illnesses. The genotype of NV responsible for the most frequent NV disease outbreaks is GII, accounting for 60–80% of the cases. Moreover, original and new NV variants are continuously emerging, concurrent with the recent global increase in NV infections. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is another foodborne pathogen frequently implicated in acute gastroenteritis cases around the world. The virus is transmitted among humans via the fecal-oral route, and infection by HAV causes the most severe form of viral illness acquired from foods. In this study, we implemented primer sets to detect NV genotypes I and II. We also developed primer sets for the detection of HAV. The primers were used in a heminested reverse transcriptase PCR (hnRT-PCR) protocol that was rapid and sensitive for detecting NVG1, NVGII and HAV virus in food. The hnRT-PCR was applied successfully to strawberries and spinach obtained from a local fresh-food market, where we could see NVGI, NVGII and HAV. Simple and feasible detection of hepatitis a virus using reverse transcription multienzyme isothermal rapid amplification and lateral flow dipsticks without standard PCR laboratory

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is mainly transmitted via contaminated food and water. HAV infection is a major global public health problem. Thus, developing a simple, rapid detection method is crucial for containing HAV epidemics, particularly in developing regions with limited laboratory resources. This study established a feasible HAV detection solution by combining reverse transcription multienzyme isothermal rapid amplification (RT-MIRA) and lateral flow dipstick (LFD) strips. Primers targeting the conserved 5’UTR sequence of HAV were used in the RT-MIRA-LFD assay. RNA extraction was enhanced by obtaining RNA directly from the centrifuged supernatant. Our study found that MIRA amplification could be finished in 12 min at 37 °C and naked-eye observation of the LFD strips in 10 min. The detection sensitivity of this method reached 1 copy/μl. RT-MIRA-LFD was compared to conventional RT-PCR using 35 human blood samples. The accuracy of the RT-MIRA-LFD method was 100%. The convenience, sensitivity, and rapidness of this detection method could provide a considerable advantage for diagnosing and controlling HAV infection, especially in regions with limited medical resources.

Prevalence of Foodborne Viruses in Berries Harvested in Canada.

It is known that the transmission of different foodborne viruses can occur either via discharge of contaminated water close to the production environment or via close contact with animal feces. Cranberries are intimately associated with water throughout their production cycle, and blueberries grow close to the ground which could lead to contact with wildlife. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of human norovirus (HuNoV GI and GII), hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) in two berries produced commercially in Canada. The detection of HuNoV and HAV on RTE cranberries and of HEV on wild blueberries was evaluated using the ISO method 15216-1:2017. Only 3 of 234 cranberry samples tested positive for HuNoV GI (3.6, 7.4, 5.3 genome copies/g, respectively) and all were negative for HuNoV GII and HAV. PMA pre-treatment and sequencing confirmed the absence of potential intact HuNoV GI particles on cranberries. None of the 150 blueberry samples tested positive for HEV. Overall, the prevalence of foodborne viruses in RTE cranberries and wild blueberries harvested in Canada is low, making these products relatively safe for consumers.

Rapid Detection of Hepatitis A Virus in Foods Using a Bioluminescent Assay in Real-Time (BART) and Reverse Transcription Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (RT-LAMP) Technology.

Foodborne hepatitis A infections have been considered as a major threat for public health worldwide. Increased incidences of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection has been associated with growing global trade of food products. Rapid and sensitive detection of HAV in foods is very essential for investigating the outbreaks. Real-time RT-PCR has been most widely used for the detection of HAV by far. However, the technology relies on fluorescence determination of the amplicon and requires sophisticated, high-cost instruments and trained personnel, limiting its use in low resource settings. In this study, a robust, affordable, and simple assay, reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay in combination with a bioluminescence-based determination of amplification in real-time (BART), was developed for the detection of HAV in different food matrices, including green onion, strawberry, mussel, and milk. The efficiencies of a one-step RT-LAMP-BART and a two-step RT-LAMP-BART were investigated for the detection of HAV in different food matrices and was compared with that of real-time RT-PCR. The sensitivity of the RT-LAMP-BART assay was significantly affected by Mg2+ concentration (P < 0.05), in addition to primer quality. The optimal Mg2+ concentration was 2mM for one-step RT-LAMP-BART and 4mM for two-step RT-LAMP-BART. Compared with cartridge-purified primers, HPLC-purified primers could greatly improve the sensitivity of the RT-LAMP-BART assay (P < 0.05). For detecting HAV in different food matrices, the performance of two-step RT-LAMP-BART was comparable with that of real-time RT-PCR and was better than that of one-step RT-LAMP-BART. The detection limit of the two-step RT-LAMP-BART for HAV in green onion, strawberry, mussel, and milk was 8.3 × 100 PFU/15g, 8.3 × 101 PFU/50g, 8.3 × 100 PFU/5g, and 8.3 × 100 PFU/40mL, respectively. The developed RT-LAMP-BART was an effective, simple, sensitive, and robust method for foodborne HAV detection.

Combination of paper membrane-based filtration and ultrafiltration to enhance the detection of MNV, HAV, and HCoV from soil-rich post-washing water.

Risk-assessing and controlling virus transmission from soil-rich post-washing water (PWW) are crucial during harvesting raw vegetables. However, viruses are normally difficult to concentrate because of their low concentrations andcomplex backgrounds. Here, ultrafiltration (UF), virus adsorption-elution (VIRADEL), and optimized paper filtration-coupled ultrafiltration (PFC-UF) methods were employed to evaluate the recovery of non-enveloped murine norovirus (MNV-1), hepatitis A virus (HAV), and enveloped human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) from soil-rich PWW. Among the three methods, PFC-UF outperformed the other methods in the recovery of viruses from PWW with soil content. Under the highest soil condition with virus seeded at a titer of 102 plaque-forming unit (PFU) or TCID50, the PFC-UF method exhibited an exceedingly consistent recovery rate of 78.8± 13.3 (MNV-1) and 44.4± 25.2% (HAV). However, the recovery of enveloped HCoV-229E was inferior to non-enveloped viruses. Overall, PFC-UF provided a reliable method for recovering viruses in soil-rich PWW.

Hepatitis A and E Viruses in Mussels from Cherrat Estuary in Morocco: Detection by Real-Time Reverse Transcription PCR Analysis.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) contamination in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from Cherrat estuary (Moroccan Atlantic Coast), Morocco. In total, 52 samples (n = 12 mussels/each) were collected at four sites in the estuary, monthly, between March 2019 and March 2020. HAV and HEV were detected by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) according to the ISO/TS 15216 method. HAV was detected in 46.15% of analyzed samples. Conversely, HEV was not detected in any sample. Moreover, the HAV detection rate was significantly associated with seasonal rainfall variations. This qualitative study on HAV and HEV contamination highlights the interest of studying mussel samples from wild areas. As HAV presence in mussels represents a potential health risk, viral contamination surveillance of mussels is necessary to protect consumers. HAV shellfish contamination must be monitored at Cherrat estuary because of the role played by shellfish as HAV reservoirs and/or vehicles in fecal-oral HAV transmission.

Development of a new concentration method for Hepatitis A virus detection (ISO 15216–2:2019) in Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum)

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is an important agent of foodborne human viral illness and continues to be a public health concern. Currently, the RT-qPCR method (ISO 15216–2:2019) is the gold standard for HAV detection in food. However, because of the complex food matrix and low virus titers in food, there is a need for effective methods for virus enrichment. In this study, we developed a sensitive method for HAV detection in Manila clams and added polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation procedures on the ISO 15216–2:2019 standard method (SM). The results showed that the recovery rates were significantly higher with more process control virus (MS2) added in the improved method (IM) than in SM, from 0.24% to 1.34% and 3.22%–13.91% respectively. The detection sensitivity of the new method (101.5 CCID50/mL) in IM was lower than that of the standard method (102.5 CCID50/mL) in SM, with recovery rates of 6.38% and 2.45%, respectively. The positive detection rate of HAV (4.48%) in IM was significantly higher than that in the standard method (0.75%). The new method is a rapid and suitable method for concentrating and detecting HAV from Manila clams. This approach has important applications in HAV monitoring and detection to ensure the safety of Manila clams for human consumption.

A point-to-point “cap” strategy to construct a highly selective dual-function molecularly-imprinted sensor for the simultaneous detection of HAV and HBV

As an artificial biomimetic receptor, molecularly-imprinted polymer (MIP) has been widely used for the separation, enrichment and detection of various substances. However, due to the complexity of virus structure, huge volume and the existence of highly similar viruses, MIP shows unsatisfactory selectivity in virus detection. To overcome these issues, two kinds of virus nanoMIPs, just like a “cap”, were synthesized by a solid-phase imprinting nanogel technique. The “cap” had no inner core and was much smaller than that of a conventional MIP, which was more favorable for mass transfer. Moreover, each “cap” could only combine with one target virus, which avoided the interference between large-volume virus molecules effectively. The two synthesized “caps” were mixed to construct a bifunctional MIP virus sensor for the simultaneous detection of Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and Hepatitis B virus (HBV). As expected, the selectivity factor (SF) for HBV detection reached 13.7, which was much higher than the reported virus MIP sensors (SF: 3–6), which was comparable to that of small molecular imprinting sensors. In addition, the high sensitivity toward HBV was 34.3 fM, and that of HAV was 27.1 pM. This method provides an idea for preparing high-selectivity biomacro-MIPs, as well as a method for the simultaneous detection of similar viruses with high sensitivity and selectivity. The recovery experiment of spiked serum showed that this method also has great practical application prospects.

Genotyping and Molecular Diagnosis of Hepatitis A Virus in Human Clinical Samples Using Multiplex PCR-Based Next-Generation Sequencing.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a serious threat to public health worldwide. We used multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) to derive information on viral genetic diversity and conduct precise phylogenetic analysis. Four HAV genome sequences were obtained using multiplex PCR-based NGS. HAV whole-genome sequence of one sample was obtained by conventional Sanger sequencing. The HAV strains demonstrated a geographic cluster with sub-genotype IA strains in the Republic of Korea. The phylogenetic pattern of HAV viral protein (VP) 3 region showed no phylogenetic conflict between the whole-genome and partial-genome sequences. The VP3 region in serum and stool samples showed sensitive detection of HAV with differences of quantification that did not exceed <10 copies/μL than the consensus VP4 region using quantitative PCR (qPCR). In conclusion, multiplex PCR-based NGS was implemented to define HAV genotypes using nearly whole-genome sequences obtained directly from hepatitis A patients. The VP3 region might be a potential candidate for tracking the genotypic origin of emerging HAV outbreaks. VP3-specific qPCR was developed for the molecular diagnosis of HAV infection. This study may be useful to predict for the disease management and subsequent development of hepatitis A infection at high risk of severe illness.

Efficient capturing and sensitive detection of hepatitis A virus from solid foods (green onion, strawberry, and mussel) using protamine-coated iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles and real-time RT-PCR

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) continues to be a public health concern and has caused large foodborne outbreaks and economic losses worldwide. Rapid detection of HAV in foods can help to confirm the source of outbreaks in a timely manner and prevent more people getting infected. In order to efficiently detect HAV at low levels of contamination in foods, rapid and easy-to-use techniques are required to separate and concentrate viral particles to a small volume. In the current study, HAV particles were eluted from green onion, strawberry, and mussel using glycine buffer (0.05 M glycine, 0.14 M NaCl, 0.2% (v/v) Tween 20, pH 9.0) and suspended viral particles were captured using protamine-coated magnetic nanoparticles (PMNPs). This process caused a selective concentration of the viral particles, which could be followed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR analysis. Results showed that pH, NaCl concentration, and PMNP amount used for the capturing had significant effects on the recovery efficiency of HAV (P < 0.05). The highest recovery rate was obtained at pH 9.0, 0.14 M NaCl, and 50 μL of PMNPs. The optimized PMNP capturing method enabled the rapid capture and concentration of HAV. A sensitive real-time RT-PCR test was developed with detection limits of 8.3 × 100 PFU/15 g, 8.3 × 101 PFU/50 g, and 8.3 × 100 PFU/5 g of HAV in green onion, strawberry, and mussel, respectively. In conclusion, the PMNP method is rapid and convenient in capturing HAV from complex solid food samples and can generate concentrated HAV sample solutions suitable for high-sensitivity real time RT-PCR detection of the virus.

Prevalence of HAV and HEV in Patients Presenting with Acute Viral Hepatitis in Silchar Medical College & Hospital

Background: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and Hepatitis E virus (HEV) are both enterically transmitted, resulting in acute viral hepatitis (AVH) in developing countries. Both are self-limiting viral infection, transmitted by feco-oral route. Exposure rate of HAV and HEV over a period are different in different parts of country. Aim: This study was done to determine prevalence of HAV and HEV in patients presenting with AVH and the co-infection of HAV and HEV in these patients. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study of 2 years duration was conducted in the Department of Microbiology, SMCH, Silchar. A non random sampling of 200 patients presenting with AVH was considered in the study. On the basis of history, serum sample were analyzed for IgM anti HAV and IgM anti HEV for the detection of HAV and HEV, respectively using commercially available ELISA kits. Results: The prevalence of HAV and HEV co-infection in patients with acute viral hepatitis was 32.5% (65 cases). HAV and HEV were most prevalent between 20 to 35years age group. Hepatitis A samples only 60 were positive and Hepatitis E samples only 5 were positive. Conclusion: Almost all HAV and HEV infectious are spread by feco-oral route. The best means of reducing the spread of infection is by promoting simple measures of personal and community hygiene such as hand washing before eating and after defecation, the sanitary disposal of excreta which will prevent contamination of water, food and milk, during epidemics, boiled water should be advocated for drinking purposes.

A Case of Hepatitis A Virus Detection in River Water Flowing into Tidal Flats

In 2019, an outbreak of hepatitis A was reported in South Korea due to the ingestion of salted shellfish contaminated with hepatitis A virus. In a survey of the contamination of salted shellfish, hepatitis A virus (HAV) type IA was detected, and it was confirmed that it originated from clams produced in one of the clam farms located in the western parts of the country. The aim of this study was to determine the cycle of human infection by HAV contaminating the water flowing into the environment. We selected a clam farm that is one of the largest producers of clams in South Korea and tested for the presence of HAV in the river water flowing directly into the vicinity of that farm. An HAV detection test was performed on river water collected from 15 points in three areas of the selected clam farm. HAV was detected in one sample of the collected river water, and its genotype was confirmed as IA, which is the most common genotype causing infection in humans and the same genotype that is prevalent in South Korea. We confirmed that the HAV released via infection in humans contaminated the tidal flats through the river. This result might be a good example of the cycle of infection of HAV in the environment.

A new assay for quantitative detection of hepatitis A virus

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is mainly transmitted via contaminated food or water or through person-to-person contact. Here, we describe development and evaluation of a reverse transcription droplet digital PCR (RT-ddPCR) and reverse transcription real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) assay for detection of HAV in food and clinical specimens. The assay was evaluated by assessing limit of detection, precision, matrix effects, sensitivity and quantitative agreement. The 95 % limit of detection (LOD95 %) was 10 % higher for RT-ddPCR than for RT-qPCR. A Bayesian model was used to estimate precision on different target concentrations. From this, we found that RT-ddPCR had somewhat greater precision than RT-qPCR within runs and markedly greater precision between runs. By analysing serum from naturally infected persons and a naturally contaminated food sample, we found that the two methods agreed well in quantification and had comparable sensitivities. Tests with artificially contaminated food samples revealed that neither RT-ddPCR nor RT-qPCR was severely inhibited by presence of oysters, raspberries, blueberries or leafy-green vegetables. For this assay, we conclude that RT-qPCR should be considered if rapid, qualitative detection is the main interest and that RT-ddPCR should be considered if precise quantification is the main interest. The high precision of RT-ddPCR allows for detection of small changes in viral concentration over time, which has direct implications for both food control and clinical studies.

Application of an Optimized Direct Lysis Method for Viral RNA Extraction Linking Contaminated Dates to Infection With Hepatitis A Virus

Consumption of dates has not been considered a common risk of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection. In January 2018, an outbreak of hepatitis was identified with cases resident in all regions of Denmark. All the detected strains belonged to HAV genotype 3A. Epidemiological investigations through patients’ interviews, case-control and trace-back studies pointed toward different batches of dates from a single producer as the vehicle of infection. Boxes of dates from suspected batches were collected from homes of patients and healthy families and analyzed using a recently reported optimized direct lysis method, consisting of simultaneous viral RNA elution and extraction from dates followed by purification of the nucleic acids. Extracts were analyzed for HAV and norovirus (NoV) RNA using RT-qPCR, while detected HAV were genotyped by Sanger sequencing. Among 20 nucleic acid extracts representing eight batches of dates, RNA of HAV (9.3 × 102 genome copies/g) and NoV genogroup (G)II (trace amounts) were detected in one batch, while NoV GII RNA (trace amounts) was detected in another. Average extraction efficiency of spiked process control murine norovirus was 20 ± 13% and the inhibitions of RT-qPCR detection of NoV GI, NoV GII, and HAV were 31 ± 34, 9 ± 9, and 3 ± 7%, respectively. The HAV genome detected in the dates matched by sequence 100% to the HAV genotype 3A detected in stool samples from cases implicated in the outbreak. This confirmed, to our knowledge, for the first time a sequence link between HAV infection and consumption of contaminated dates, suggesting dates to be an important vehicle of HAV transmission.

Characterisation of the environmental presence of hepatitis A virus in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Grey literature was sourced by searching the following electronic databases: Open Grey, National Health Research Database and Mednar.Eligibility criteria for including studiesCross-sectional and ecological studies reporting HAV environmental presence and conducted in LMICs between January 2005 and May 2019, irrespective of language of publication.Data extraction and data synthesisRelevant data were extracted from articles meeting the inclusion criteria, and two reviewers independently assessed the studies for risk of bias. High heterogeneity of the extracted data led to the results being reported narratively.ResultsA total of 2092 records were retrieved, of which 33 met the inclusion criteria. 21 studies were conducted in Tunisia, India and South Africa, and the rest were from Philippines, Pakistan, Morocco, Chad, Mozambique, Kenya and Uganda. In Tunisian raw sewage samples, the prevalence of HAV ranged from 12% to 68%, with an estimated average detection rate of 50% (95% CI 25 to 75), whereas HAV detection in treated sewage in Tunisia ranged from 23% to 65%, with an estimated average detection rate of 38% (95% CI 20 to 57). The prevalence of HAV detection in South African treated sewage and surface water samples ranged from 4% to 37% and from 16% to 76%, with an estimated average detection rates of 15% (95% CI 1 to 29) and 51% (95% CI 21 to 80), respectively. Over the review period, the estimated average detection rate of environmental HAV presence appeared to have declined by 10%.ConclusionThe quality of included studies was fair, but sampling issues and paucity of data limited the strength of the review findings.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42019119592.

First evidence for continuous circulation of hepatitis A virus subgenotype IIA in Central Africa.

Although a high seroprevalence of antibodies against hepatitis A virus (HAV) has been estimated in Central Africa, the current status of both HAV infections and seroprevalence of anti‐HAV antibodies remains unclear due to a paucity of surveillance data available. We conducted a serological survey during 2015‐2017 in Gabon, Central Africa, and confirmed a high seroprevalence of anti‐HAV antibodies in all age groups. To identify the currently circulating HAV strains and to reveal the epidemiological and genetic characteristics of the virus, we conducted molecular surveillance in a total of 1007 patients presenting febrile illness. Through HAV detection and sequencing, we identified subgenotype IIA (HAV‐IIA) infections in the country throughout the year. A significant prevalence trend emerged in the young child population, presenting several infection peaks which appeared to be unrelated to dry or rainy seasons. Whole‐genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses revealed local HAV‐IIA evolutionary events in Central Africa, indicating the circulation of HAV‐IIA strains of a region‐specific lineage. Recombination analysis of complete genome sequences revealed potential recombination events in Gabonese HAV strains. Interestingly, Gabonese HAV‐IIA possibly acquired the 5’‐untranslated region (5’‐UTR) of the rare subgenotype HAV‐IIB in recent years, suggesting the present existence of HAV‐IIB in Central Africa. These findings indicate a currently stable HAV‐IIA circulation in Gabon, with a high risk of infections in children aged under 5 years. Our findings will enhance the understanding of the current status of HAV infections in Central Africa and provide new insight into the molecular epidemiology and evolution of HAV genotype II.

Hepatitis A infections from food.

Food contaminated by hepatitis A virus (HAV) is responsible of the 2-7% of all HAV outbreaks worldwide. This review provides a description of the HAV characteristics, its infectivity and epidemiological features. In addition, this review compiles existing original papers reporting HAV prevalence, viral titres in foodstuffs and the risk associated with food contamination. The purpose of this revision is to conduct a structured and systematic review of the published molecular procedures for HAV detection in food, including the assessment of its infectivity.
