A comprehensive review on the role of biosurfactants in remediation of heavy metals from contaminated environment

The hazardous nature of heavy metals (HMs) in the ecosystem has drawn global attention due to its emergence as a major environmental and public health concern. As toxic metals are non-degradable, they affect not only animals but also human beings and vegetation. These HMs are long-lasting pollutants that travel vast distances from their site of origin in the environment and bioaccumulate in humans and other organisms through the food chain. These pollutants can cause extensive pollution since they are frequently produced by industrial activities and inappropriate disposal procedures. Biosurfactants’ (BSs) versatility makes them an appealing category that plays an essential role in various biotechnological applications for environmental remediation. BSs have a variety of characteristics, including metal binding, solubilization, and emulsification. They remediate the HMs through processes like complexation, ion exchange, and metal solubilization. Furthermore, owing to their amphiphilic nature, they improve the sorption and solubility of hydrophobic contaminants and reduce the surface area and interfacial tension of immiscible liquids. As a result, BS-based remediation plays an important part in the heavy metal removal process in multiple ways. This review aims to provide information on the function of BSs in eliminating HMs through bioremediation processes for environmental sustainability.

Detoxification and removal of heavy metal by an acid-tolerant microalgae, Graesiella sp. MA1

Acidophilic/acid-resistant algae exhibit innate survival advantages in acid mine drainage (AMD), but their response remains poorly understood. In this study, the detoxification and removal of Graesiella sp. MA1 isolated from AMD to the heavy metals of Cu2+ and Mn2+ at pH 3.5 was evaluated. The physiological response mechanism of the algae to these two heavy metals was analyzed by measuring the changes of algal biomass, photosynthetic pigments, malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) and sulfhydryl (-SH) contents, as well as the specific activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). The main functional groups bound to heavy metals in microalgae were analyzed using FITR and XPS spectra. Results indicate metal-induced growth and photosynthesis impacts, with MDA rising alongside metal concentrations. However, Graesiella sp. MA1 exhibited a certain degree of removal ability toward Cu2+ and Mn2+, and increased the pH of the medium from 3.5 to 5.12–5.73 and 9.07 (control group), indicating the potential ability to regulate the environmental pH. Additionally, this strain alleviated the toxic effects of heavy metals by regulating the level of SOD, APX, GSH, and -SH in the antioxidant system. FTIR and XPS analysis reveal that the functional groups, such as carboxyl, amide I and amide II, which related to proteins and polysaccharides on the microalgal surface, combined with Cu2+ and Mn2+ for extracellular removal. Clarifying the detoxification and removal process of heavy metals from acid-tolerant microalgae will help us to better use microalgae to repair AMD in situ.

OPTIMISATION OF TECHNOLOGY AND SELECTION OF BIOSORBENTS BASED ON HAWTHORN, MOUNTAIN ASH AND MOTHERWORT TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF FERMENTED MILK PRODUCT

The accelerated development of urbanisation brings with it environmental problems and adverse effects on human health. Air pollution, water pollution and limited access to natural resources are becoming serious challenges. However, innovative products incorporating enterosorption technologies present a potential solution to improve public health. These products contribute to the effective removal of toxic substances from the body, mitigating the negative health effects of urbanisation.In the context of yoghurt with LABR, it has been found to be more stable to whey separation and moisture retention. Prebiotics have a positive effect on water retention, although this effect may diminish over time. The optimal concentration of LABR bacteria also emphasises the importance of a precise balance, after which additional increases do not bring significant improvements. These results can be used to optimise the production of yoghurt, taking into account its structure and properties over its shelf life.Considering the study data, it can be concluded that an optimal combination of L. acidophilus bacterial concentration and metal concentration, reached on the fourth day after the addition of prebiotics, is necessary to maximise the efficiency of heavy metal bioremediation. These results have practical implications for heavy metal removal processes in aqueous media, providing a basis for optimising bioremediation conditions in industrial and environmental applications.

Adsorption of Pb (II) Ions in Water with Natural Kenaf Beads

The purpose of this research is to study plant-based kenaf adsorbents on the adsorption of polluted Pb (II) in aqueous solutions. CHT and KNF core powder were added to the sodium alginate solution and stirred homogeneously. The blend solution was dripped into calcium chloride to form smooth magnetic KNF-CHT-ALG beads. The functional group presence in the beads and percentage adsorption of the heavy metals were checked using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Inductively Coupling Method analyses, respectively. It was found that the surface morphology of kenaf core was rougher than that of kenaf fibre, with the presence of a larger amount of micropores as observed in the FESEM analysis. In addition, the FTIR pattern of the KNF-CHT-ALG beads had shown the existence of functional groups such as hydroxyl and carboxyl, which could attract more positively charged heavy metals. The ICP analysis confirmed the successful 95% adsorption of the heavy metals. Kenaf is an abundant crop available in Malaysia that may reduce the production cost of the adsorbents. The significant outcomes of this study would be its contribution to minimising the dependency on the chemical adsorbent and to accelerating the removal process of heavy metals in real water bodies. Thus, this study aims to create a more sustainable future, especially by reaching SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

Utilization potential of poultry litter ash as phosphorus-based fertilizer

A large quantity of poultry litter is globally generated as a result of expanding poultry industry. From several alternative technologies, one of the most feasible management for this waste is com-bustion, which exhausts poultry litter ash (PLA) as the main by-product. In this study, a PLA sample was examined for its utilization potential as a raw material for phosphorus-based fertilizer. According to the experimental results, Ca, P and K were determined as the major elements in the PLA sample with 29.54, 6.13 and 4.96%, respectively. Although the sample contains 2472 ppm Zn and 922 ppm Cu, their solubility determined by the leaching test is below the toxicity limit for haz-ardous waste. In terms of the major elements, about 290 mg/l Ca was detected in the leachate, re-sulting in a pH value higher than 13, whereas P concentration was found only 0.0092 mg/l. These two crucial results constitute the major difficulties for direct use of the PLA as a fertilizer. On the other hand, a usable P-rich product with low heavy metal contents and neutral pH can be obtained through acidification, heavy metal removal and neutralization processes. However, in this case, the feasibility of processes to be used should be carefully considered in economic point of view. In conclusion, direct application of the PLA sample examined as P-based fertilizer is not possible without any pre-treatments mainly due to its very high alkalinity and the low water solubility of P.

Conversion of corn shell as biomass solid waste into carbon species for efficient decontamination of wastewater via heavy metals adsorption

Biomass-based solid residuals can be of serious hazardous environmental impacts if left for natural degradation. Thus, the proper utilization of such residuals is highly recommended. Therefore, one of solid residuals: namely, corn shell, was used in this study to synthesize carbon species (labeled as CS-C) as an adsorbent for efficient removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. The structural properties and the textural characteristics of the prepared carbon species were verified. The present charges on the carbon surface were acquired via zeta potential analysis. The performance of CS-C, as adsorbent, was investigated through batch technique. Adsorption isotherm was optimally described using the Langmuir model reflecting that the removal process occurs at the homogenous surface of CS-C through a chemical reaction (surface complexation mechanism). The equilibrium state for the sorption process was reached after 4 h of interaction. The kinetic studies revealed the nice fit of heavy metal removal process to Pseudo-second-order model and the thermodynamics is matched to endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible sorption process. The displayed results could emphasize the high potentiality of CS-C to act as a remarkable sorbent for efficient tackling of water contaminants.

Finding the best combination of autochthonous microorganisms with the most effective biosorption ability for heavy metals removal from wastewater.

The presence of heavy metals (HMs) in the environment represents a serious environmental problem. In this regard, this work was conceived with the aim of finding, among indigenous microorganisms, the species and their combinations with the best biosorption activity for the following HMs: zinc, lead, cadmium, copper, and nickel. The experiment was carried out in several steps: (1) isolation and identification of microbial strains from the Central Effluent Treatment Plant’s wastewater; (2) studying the interaction of microorganisms and the ability to form biofilms in 96-well plates; (3) testing the resistance of biofilms to HMs; (4) testing the growth of biofilms on AMB media carriers in the presence of HMS; and (5) biosorption assay. The selected strains used in this study were: Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Serratia odorifera, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The best biofilm producers in control medium were K. oxytoca/S. odorifera (KS), followed by K. oxytoca/S. odorifera/S. cerevisiae (KSC), and E. cloacae/K. oxytoca/S. odorifera (EKS) after 10 days of incubation. Mixed cultures composed of three species showed the highest resistance to the presence of all tested metals. The best biosorption capacity was shown by KSC for Cu2+ (99.18%), followed by EKS for Pb2+ (99.14%) and Cd2+ (99.03%), K. oxytoca for Ni2+ (98.47%), and E. cloacae for Zn2+ (98.06%). This research offers a novel approach to using mixed biofilms for heavy metal removal processes as well as its potential application in the bioremediation of wastewater.

Gas Hydrate-Based Heavy Metal Ion Removal from Industrial Wastewater: A Review

Innovating methods for treating industrial wastewater containing heavy metals frequently incorporate toxicity-reduction technologies to keep up with regulatory requirements. This article reviews the latest advances, benefits, opportunities and drawbacks of several heavy metal removal treatment systems for industrial wastewater in detail. The conventional physicochemical techniques used in heavy metal removal processes with their advantages and limitations are evaluated. A particular focus is given to innovative gas hydrate-based separation of heavy metals from industrial effluent with their comparison, advantages and limitations in the direction of commercialization as well as prospective remedies. Clathrate hydrate-based removal is a potential technology for the treatment of metal-contaminated wastewater. In this work, a complete assessment of the literature is addressed based on removal efficiency, enrichment factor and water recovery, utilizing the gas hydrate approach. It is shown that gas hydrate-based treatment technology may be the way of the future for water management purposes, as the industrial treated water may be utilized for process industries, watering, irrigation and be safe to drink.

Green Kenaf-Based Adsorbent for Adsorption of Pb (II) Ions in Water

Excessive toxic metals are commonly found in polluted water bodies. This study aimed to synthesise kenaf-based adsorbents for the adsorption of lead (II) ions. The physical and chemical characteristics of the kenaf (KNF) core and fibre were determined using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The further synthesised kenaf-chitosan-alginate (KNF-CHT-ALG) beads were characterised through FESEM and FTIR, while inductively coupled plasma (ICP) was employed to determine the percentage of adsorption. The FESEM analysis demonstrated that the KNF core had a rougher surface morphology than the KNF fibre. The TGA analysis confirmed that the KNF core was coarser and contained a higher residue of approximately 75.91%. The FTIR spectra established intense functional groups in the KNF core, such as hydroxyl and carboxyl, attracting more Pb (II) ions. The KNF core was then used to synthesise KNF-CHT-ALG beads. The beads confirmed the enhancement in surface morphology and the existence of numerous functional groups for Pb (II) ions to bind. The ICP analysis demonstrated 95% of Pb (II) ion adsorption. Additionally, batch adsorption experiments were conducted at pH 2–7 and the contact time was within 5–60 minutes. The kinetic study of the adsorption followed the pseudo-second order model with an R2 value of 0.9999. The KNF is a crop found in abundance in Malaysia, which could reduce the production cost of adsorbents. The significant outcomes would minimise the dependency on chemical adsorbents and accelerate the removal process of heavy metals in natural bodies of water.

Photothermal air gap membrane distillation for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater

As the world population grows, pure water becomes increasingly scarce, making wastewater treatment necessary. However, the processes currently used to treat industrial wastewater are generally energy-intensive, highlighting the need to develop environmentally friendly wastewater treatment technologies. To address this issue, a photothermal air–gap membrane distillation system was developed and tested for the first time to remove heavy metal ions from wastewater. Activated carbon particles at different concentrations were used in the prepared polyvinylidene fluoride membranes as components for solar energy recovery. Zinc, one of the most common heavy metals in industrial wastewater in the United Arab Emirates, was used as a model contaminant in this study. The results showed that the use of Activated Carbon particles to modify Polyvinylidene fluoride membranes can significantly improve solar absorption (97%) and porosity (60.6%), resulting in a permeate flux of 0.32 L/m2h and a rejection of 97% of Zn ions. Additionally, the optimized membrane was tested using a synthetic heavy metal solution and showed high rejection rates for most of the tested heavy metals (Zn2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Cr3+, and Ni2+), which can be potentially used in the industrial heavy metal removal process. The developed photothermal water treatment system can provide a highly efficient and scalable water treatment process.

The kinetics of Fe2+ heavy metal adsorption by microalgae Desmodesmus sp. beads

Industrial waste that contains high concentration of iron heavy metal (Fe2+) needs to be reduced into a safer limit for water ecosystem using an environmental-friendly, sustainable and low cost technology. This literature study was aimed to gather information on Fe2+ metal ion removal with biosorption method by mobilized beads-shaped Desmodesmus sp. green microalgae. Biosorbent beads are made of Desmodesmus sp. green microalgae powder binded with Na-alginate polymer. Desmodesmus sp. microalgae were cultivated in an Erlenmeyer flask with wastewater contains Fe2+ and Beijerinck growth media controlled in batch system. Analysis was conducted to study the influence of pH, size, beads, beads concentration, and Na-alginate concentration towards Fe2+ heavy metal removal efficiency on biosorption process. Research results revealed that Fe2+ heavy metal was effectively adsorbed by 1 mm beads up until 46% at maximum capacity on pH level of 6. These beads contain 8% gr/L of microalgae powder and 9% gr/L of Na-alginate. The involved function groups in Fe2+ sorption and the beads biosorbent morphology changes were analyzed by using FTIR and SEM. This biosorption research was following by analysis of Freundlich isotherm and reaction kinetics order two with linear approach. This was to shows the beads possess adsorption kinetics with optimum Fe2+ absorption capacity. Desmodesmus sp. beads are highly potential to be used as biosorbent since the heavy metal removal process was selectively conducted on wide pH level and temperature ranges, fast adsorption kinetics, and low operational cost. The smaller the beads size the wider the surface area, which leads to higher removal efficiency rate.

Removal of iron from salt water entering the chlor-alkali membrane system using activated carbon adsorbent to reduce environmental damage

Heavy metal ions have deadly and deadly effects on all life forms and enter the food chain through the disposal of waste in water channels. One of the most important heavy metals is iron. There are several methods used to remove heavy metal ions. The adsorption method is widely used due to its easy operation, low energy consumption, easy maintenance, high adsorption capacity and high efficiency. Activated carbon as an adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and low cost, has many applications in heavy metal removal processes. The purpose of this paper is to remove iron (III) ions from brine entering the chlorinated alcohol system using activated carbon adsorbent to reduce environmental damage.In order to achieve this goal, after preparation of activated carbon adsorbent, and its contact with salt water of chlor-alkali unit containing iron (III) ion, the effect of adsorbent amount factors (0.5 to 2 g / l), contact time (15 to 120 minutes) and pH (3 to 9) were assessed.Based on the results of this study, pH = 7 was determined as the optimal pH and 90 minutes as the equilibrium time. with increasing the amount of adsorbent, the removal percentage increased and the maximum removal percentage of iron ions in the amount of 2 g / l of activated carbon adsorbent was obtained. Also, the effect of contact time, pH and the amount of activated carbon adsorbent on the process of iron ion removal was significant (p <0/05).

Tunning the defects in lignin-derived-carbon and trimetallic layered double hydroxides composites (LDH@LDC) for efficient removal of U(VI) and Cr(VI) in aquatic environment

Utilizing different absorbents to remove heavy metals from aquatic environment has been extensively investigated because of its simple operation, good reusability, and low cost. The removal efficiency of these adsorbents, nevertheless, need to be further enhanced to meet the practical requirement. In this study, we demonstrate defect engineering as an effective approach to enhance the performance of biochar-based composites for U(VI) and Cr(VI) removal. Lignin derived carbon and Ca/Fe/Al-trimetallic layered double hydroxide composites (LDH@LDC) is prepared by hydrothermal method. Defects are introduced into the LDH layer by H2 plasma treatment. The obtained defective LDH@LDC exhibits outstanding removal efficiency for U(VI) (267.65 mg/g at pH = 5.0, T = 308.15 K, CInitial = 30 mg/L), which is much higher than LDH@LDC as-prep (190.47 mg/g at pH = 5.0, T = 308.15 K, CInitial = 30 mg/L). Similar defect-induced enhancement is observed for the removal of Cr(VI). The thermodynamic and kinetic studies of the removal process, as well as the surface analyze suggest that the removal mechanism of U(VI) and Cr(VI) by the as-prepared and plasma-treated LDH@LDC were both dominated by ion exchange. The plasma treatment introduces defects into the LDH layer, which effectively promote the ion exchange between the LDH layer and the heavy metal in the aquatic environment, leading to strongly enhanced removal performance. This study clarifies the critical role of defects in heavy metal removal process and provides a new pathway of designing high performance absorbents for water remediation.

Effective use of activated carbon from olive stone waste in the biosorption removal of Fe(III) ions from aqueous solutions

The pollution of industrial wastewater by heavy metals introduces a large number of iron ions, which constitute a hazard to human life even at trace concentrations. Most processes for the treatment of wastewater with Fe(III) ions and others heavy metals today are based on chemical physical methods. They have the disadvantage of generating a secondary sludge, which always requires additional treatment. This makes the heavy metal removal process more expensive. In contrast, the biosorption process has proven in recent years to be an alternative, economical and efficient process for the treatment of wastewater that is contaminated by metals. This paper proposes the use of Multi-Response Surface with desirability functions (MRS) to optimize the process of biosorption using activated carbon from olive stone waste to remove Fe(III) ions from aqueous solutions. The study has been validated on a laboratory scale, is not technically demanding, is environmentally friendly and involves a cost that will be acceptable to the industrial wastewater for economic reasons. Several parameters or inputs of the biosorption process were considered. They included the initial iron concentration, biosorbent dosage, process temperature, agitation time and mixing speed. However, the concentration of Fe(III) ions that are present in the treated wastewater is the variable to optimize in three optimization scenarios when the minimum, mean and maximum values of initial iron concentration appear in their study range (lower, intermediate and higher value). These scenarios were based on a desire to obtain the maximum elimination of Fe(III) for any value of parameters or inputs of the biosorption process, maximum elimination of Fe(III) when the energy consumption of the adsorption process was minimized, and maximum elimination of Fe(III) when the biosorbent dosage was minimized. The proposed adsorption process achieved a maximum Fe(III) elimination of 99.51%, 99.24% and 99.49% for the first, second and third optimization scenarios respectively when, in all cases, the initial iron concentration was 55 mg/L. Agreement between the experimental and predicted results indicates that activated carbon that is derived from olive stone waste can be used as a biosorbent.

The Study on the Removal Process of Heavy Metals from Mine Drainage Using Coal Bottom Ash

본 연구는 유동층 석탄보일러에서 발생하는 석탄 바닥회를 중금속 처리제로 활용하기 위하여 수행하였으며, 산성광산배수 중의 중금속 성분을 제거하기 위한 실험을 실시하였다. 대상 중금속은 구리, 카드뮴, 크롬, 납으로 선정하여 산성광산배수 모사액을 제조하였고, 석탄회 첨가량, 시험용액의 초기 중금속 농도에 대한 제거실험을 실시하였다. 실험결과, 석탄회 농도가 중량물 시료 15 g/L, 경량물 시료 10 g/L로 첨가된 조건에서 총 중금속의 제거능은 각각 30.8 mg/L, 46.4 mg/g로 나타났다. 이후 비소를 추가하여 5종 중금속에 대한 최대 제거능을 파악하기 위하여 장기 컬럼실험을 실시하였으며, 각각의 중금속 성분에 대한 제거능을 조사하였고, 약 60일간 가동 후 pH 9.25에서 최대 중금속 제거능은 23.6 mg/g이었다.

Experimental study and parameters optimization of microalgae based heavy metals removal process using a hybrid response surface methodology-crow search algorithm

This study investigates the use of microalgae as a biosorbent to eliminate heavy metals ions from wastewater. The Chlorella kessleri microalgae species was employed to biosorb heavy metals from synthetic wastewater specimens. FTIR, and SEM/XRD analyses were utilized to characterize the microalgal biomass (the adsorbent). The experiments were conducted with several process parameters, including initial solution pH, temperature, and microalgae biomass dose. In order to secure the best experimental conditions, the optimum parameters were estimated using an integrated response surface methodology (RSM), desirability function (DF), and crow search algorithm (CSA) modeling approach. A maximum lead(II) removal efficiency of 99.54% was identified by the RSM–DF platform with the following optimal set of parameters: pH of 6.34, temperature of 27.71 °C, and biomass dosage of 1.5 g L−1. The hybrid RSM–CSA approach provided a globally optimal solution that was similar to the results obtained by the RSM–DF approach. The consistency of the model-predicted optimum conditions was confirmed by conducting experiments under those conditions. It was found that the experimental removal efficiency (97.1%) under optimum conditions was very close (less than a 5% error) to the model-predicted value. The lead(II) biosorption process was better demonstrated by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Finally, simultaneous removal of metals from wastewater samples containing a mixture of multiple heavy metals was investigated. The removal efficiency of each heavy metal was found to be in the following order: Pb(II) > Co(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) > Cr(II).

Wet air oxidation (WAO) on sludge treatment and its first industrial application in China

Typical commercial application of WAO on sludge treatment is first used in China, system design and debugging, and effect and cost performance is illustrated in this article. It reduces the temperature and pressure of a typical wet oxidation reaction, and the oxygen supplied is only 30- 50 % of the COD, which is specifically used to treat sludge. After the treatment, the sludge moisture content from 80 % to 45-48 %, and become harmless and stabilized, so it can be used as soil for gardens directly or mixed with other materials. As a supplementary carbon source for the nitrogen removal and phosphorus removal process, the separation solution is rich in organic acids and returned to the sewage plant after the heavy metal removal process. The operating cost of the entire process is 180-200 yuan per ton (80 % moisture content), mainly for electricity consumption.

Enhanced Adsorptive Bioremediation of Heavy Metals (Cd2+, Cr6+, Pb2+) by Methane-Oxidizing Epipelon.

Cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) are heavy metals that have been classified as priority pollutants in aqueous environment while methane-oxidizing bacteria as a biofilter arguably consume up to 90% of the produced methane in the same aqueous environment before it escapes into the atmosphere. However, the underlying kinetics and active methane oxidizers are poorly understood for the hotspot of epipelon that provides a unique micro-ecosystem containing diversified guild of microorganisms including methane oxidizers for potential bioremediation of heavy metals. In the present study, the Pb2+, Cd2+and Cr6+ bioremediation potential of epipelon biofilm was assessed under both high (120,000 ppm) and near-atmospheric (6 ppm) methane concentrations. Epipelon biofilm demonstrated a high methane oxidation activity following microcosm incubation amended with a high concentration of methane, accompanied by the complete removal of 50 mg L−1 Pb2+ and 50 mg L−1 Cd2+ (14 days) and partial (20%) removal of 50 mg L−1 Cr6+ after 20 days. High methane dose stimulated a faster (144 h earlier) heavy metal removal rate compared to near-atmospheric methane concentrations. DNA-based stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) following 13CH4 microcosm incubation revealed the growth and activity of different phylotypes of methanotrophs during the methane oxidation and heavy metal removal process. High throughput sequencing of 13C-labelled particulate methane monooxygenase gene pmoA and 16S rRNA genes revealed that the prevalent active methane oxidizers were type I affiliated methanotrophs, i.e., Methylobacter. Type II methanotrophs including Methylosinus and Methylocystis were also labeled only under high methane concentrations. These results suggest that epipelon biofilm can serve as an important micro-environment to alleviate both methane emission and the heavy metal contamination in aqueous ecosystems with constant high methane fluxes.

Alkyl Thiourea Functionalised Silica for the Effective Removal of Heavy Metals from Acanthopanax senticosus Extract.

Acanthopanax senticosus extract with excessive standard of Pb, Cd, Hg, and Cu was used as the research object, and the alkyl thiourea functionalised silica was used as a new heavy metal removal scavenger. The heavy metal removal process was optimised by orthogonal experiment with dynamic and static adsorption modes. Meanwhile, the content of Acanthopanax B and Acanthopanax E, the solid content, and the HPLC fingerprint similarity were used as quality monitoring indicators of Acanthopanax senticosus heavy metal removal before and after. Then, the technical adaptability of heavy metal removal by alkyl thiourea functionalised silica was evaluated. Under the optimal dynamic adsorption conditions, the average removal rates of Pb, Cd, Hg, and Cu were 91.64%, 93.04%, 81.77%, and 83.11%, respectively. Under the optimal static adsorption conditions, the average removal rates of Pb, Cd, Hg, and Cu were 82.22%, 89.95%, 81.26%, and 82.97%, respectively. During Acanthopanax senticosus extract heavy metal removal before and after, the change percentage of Acanthopanax B and Acanthopanax E was less than 2.00%, the solid content loss rate was only 0.18%, and the fingerprint similarity was over 99.9%. The method can be used to satisfy the high efficiency of selective removal of harmful elements in Acanthopanax senticosus extract and the effective composition of almost no effect; the method is simple and easy, so it can be recommended for pretreatment of heavy metals in Traditional Chinese Medicine extracts, and this way provides a new thought and research technique to decrease the contents of heavy metals.
