Extreme brightness laser-based neutron pulses as a pathway for investigating nucleosynthesis in the laboratory

With the much-anticipated multi-petawatt (PW) laser facilities that are coming online, neutron sources with extreme fluxes could soon be in reach. Such sources would rely on spallation by protons accelerated by the high-intensity lasers. These high neutron fluxes would make possible not only direct measurements of neutron capture and β-decay rates related to the r-process of nucleosynthesis of heavy elements, but also such nuclear measurements in a hot plasma environment, which would be beneficial for s-process investigations in astrophysically relevant conditions. This could, in turn, finally allow possible reconciliation of the observed element abundances in stars and those derived from simulations, which at present show large discrepancies. Here, we review a possible pathway to reach unprecedented neutron fluxes using multi-PW lasers, as well as strategies to perform measurements to investigate the r- and s-processes of nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in cold matter, as well as in a hot plasma environment.

Reactions along the astrophysical s-process path and prospects for neutron radiotherapy with the Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) at the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF)

Neutrons play a dominant role in the stellar nucleosynthesis of heavy elements and the quest for accurate experimental determinations of neutron-induced reaction cross sections becomes more stringent with the refinement of nuclear and astrophysical models. We review here an experimental nuclear-astrophysics program using a high-intensity neutron source based on the 7Li(p, n)7Be reaction with a Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) at the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF) Phase I. The quasi-Maxwellian neutron spectrum with effective thermal energy $ kT \approx 30$ keV, characteristic of the thick-target 7Li(p, n) yield at proton energy $ E_p \approx 1.92$ MeV close to its neutron threshold, is well suited for laboratory measurements of neutron capture reactions along the astrophysical s -process path. The high-intensity proton beam (in the mA range) of SARAF and the high power (few kW) dissipation of LiLiT result in the most intense source of neutrons available today at stellar-like energies. The principle, design and properties of the LiLiT device and recent measurements of Maxwellian Averaged Cross Sections (MACS) based on activation of targets of astrophysical interest are described. Decay counting or atom counting methods (accelerator mass spectrometry, atom-trap trace analysis) are used for the detection of short-lived or long-lived activation products, respectively. In a different realm of applications, the 7Li(p, n) reaction is a leading candidate as an accelerator-based neutron source for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The high neutron yield achievable from a liquid-lithium target, its sustainability of operation under kW-power incident beams and the recent availability of small-size high-intensity accelerators are compatible with a hospital-based clinical facility. An effort towards the characterization and realization of a liquid-lithium target for BNCT is reviewed. Perspectives of pending and future developments towards SARAF Phase II, based on a 40MeV, 5mA CW proton/deuteron superconducting linear accelerator, are summarized.

Fingerprints of Heavy-Element Nucleosynthesis in the Late-Time Lightcurves of Kilonovae.

The kilonova emission observed following the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 provided the first direct evidence for the synthesis of heavy nuclei through the rapid neutron capture process (r process). The late-time transition in the spectral energy distribution to near-infrared wavelengths was interpreted as indicating the production of lanthanide nuclei, with atomic mass number A≳140. However, compelling evidence for the presence of even heavier third-peak (A≈195) r-process elements (e.g., gold, platinum) or translead nuclei remains elusive. At early times (∼days) most of the r-process heating arises from a large statistical ensemble of β decays, which thermalize efficiently while the ejecta is still dense, generating a heating rate that is reasonably approximated by a single power law. However, at later times of weeks to months, the decay energy input can also possibly be dominated by a discrete number of α decays, ^{223}Ra (half-life t_{1/2}=11.43 d), ^{225}Ac (t_{1/2}=10.0 d, following the β decay of ^{225}Ra with t_{1/2}=14.9 d), and the fissioning isotope ^{254}Cf (t_{1/2}=60.5 d), which liberate more energy per decay and thermalize with greater efficiency than β-decay products. Late-time nebular observations of kilonovae which constrain the radioactive power provide the potential to identify signatures of these individual isotopes, thus confirming the production of heavy nuclei. In order to constrain the bolometric light to the required accuracy, multiepoch and wideband observations are required with sensitive instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope. In addition, by comparing the nuclear heating rate obtained with an abundance distribution that follows the solar r abundance pattern, to the bolometric lightcurve of AT2017gfo, we find that the yet-uncertain r abundance of ^{72}Ge plays a decisive role in powering the lightcurve, if one assumes that GW170817 has produced a full range of the solar r abundances down to mass number A∼70.

S stars and s-process in the Gaia era

Context. S stars are transition objects between M-type giants and carbon stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). They are characterized by overabundances of s-process elements. Roughly half of them are enhanced in technetium (Tc), an s-process element with no stable isotope, while the other half lack technetium. This dichotomy arises from the fact that Tc-rich S stars are intrinsically producing s-process elements and have undergone third dredge-up (TDU) events, while Tc-poor S stars owe their s-process overabundances to a past pollution by a former AGB companion which is now an undetected white dwarf, and since the epoch of the mass transfer, technetium has totally decayed. Aims. Our aim is to analyse the abundances of S stars and gain insights into their evolutionary status and on the nucleosynthesis of heavy s-process elements taking place in their interior. In particular, the location of extrinsic and intrinsic S stars in the HR diagram will be compared with the theoretical onset of the TDU on the thermally pulsing AGB. Methods. A sample of 19 S-type stars was analysed by combining HERMES high-resolution spectra, accurate Gaia Data Release 2 (GDR2) parallaxes, stellar-evolution models, and newly designed MARCS model atmospheres for S-type stars. Various stellar parameters impact the atmospheric structure of S stars, not only effective temperature, gravity, metallicity and microturbulence but also C/O and [s/Fe]. We show that photometric data alone are not sufficient to disentangle these parameters. We present a new automatic spectral-fitting method that allows one to constrain the range of possible atmospheric parameters. Results. Combining the derived parameters with GDR2 parallaxes allows a joint analysis of the location of the stars in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram and of their surface abundances. For all 19 stars, Zr and Nb abundances are derived, complemented by abundances of other s-process elements for the three Tc-rich S stars. These abundances agree within the uncertainties with nucleosynthesis predictions for stars of corresponding mass, metallicity and evolutionary stage. The Tc dichotomy between extrinsic and intrinsic S stars is seen as well in the Nb abundances: intrinsic, Tc-rich S stars are Nb-poor, whereas extrinsic, Tc-poor S stars are Nb-rich. Most extrinsic S stars lie close to the tip of the red giant branch (RGB), and a few are located along the early AGB. All appear to be the cooler analogues of barium stars. Barium stars with masses smaller than 2.5 M⊙ turn into extrinsic S stars on the RGB, because only for those masses does the RGB tip extend to temperatures lower than ~4200 K, which allows the ZrO bands distinctive of S-type stars to develop. On the contrary, barium stars with masses in excess of ~2.5 M⊙ can only turn into extrinsic S stars on the E-AGB, but those are short-lived, and thus rare. The location of intrinsic S stars in the HR diagram is compatible with them being thermally-pulsing AGB stars. Although nucleosynthetic model predictions give a satisfactory distribution of s-process elements, fitting at the same time the carbon and heavy s-element enrichments still remains difficult. Finally, the Tc-rich star V915 Aql is challenging as it points at the occurrence of TDU episodes in stars with masses as low as M ~ 1 M⊙.

The concept of nuclear photon strength functions: A model-independent approach via ([formula omitted]) reactions

Most theoretical approaches used in nuclear astrophysics to model the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements incorporate the so-called statistical model in order to describe the excitation and decay properties of atomic nuclei. One of the basic assumptions of this model is the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and the related concept of so-called photon strength functions to describe γ-ray transition probabilities. We present a novel experimental approach that allows for the first time to experimentally determine the photon strength function simultaneously in two independent ways by a unique combination of quasi-monochromatic photon beams and a newly implemented γ–γ coincidence setup. This technique does not assume a priori the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and sets a benchmark in terms of the detection sensitivity for measuring decay properties of photo-excited states below the neutron separation energy. The data for the spherical off-shell nucleus 128Te were obtained for γ-ray beam-energy settings between 3 MeV and 9 MeV in steps of 130 keV for the lower beam energies and in steps of up to 280 keV for the highest beam settings. We present a quantitative analysis on the consistency of the derived photon strength function with the Brink–Axel hypothesis. The data clearly demonstrate a discrepancy of up to a factor of two between the photon strength functions extracted from the photoabsorption and photon emission process, respectively. In addition, we observe that the photon strength functions are not independent of the excitation energy, as usually assumed. Thus, we conclude, that the Brink–Axel hypothesis is not strictly fulfilled in the excitation-energy region below the neutron separation threshold (Sn=8.78MeV) for the studied case of 128Te.

Enhanced low-energy γ-decay strength of Ni70 and its robustness within the shell model

Neutron-capture reactions on very neutron-rich nuclei are essential for heavy-element nucleosynthesis through the rapid neutron-capture process, now shown to take place in neutron-star merger events. For these exotic nuclei, radiative neutron capture is extremely sensitive to their $\gamma$-emission probability at very low $\gamma$ energies. In this work, we present measurements of the $\gamma$-decay strength of $^{70}$Ni over the wide range $1.3 \leq E_{\gamma} \leq 8 $ MeV. A significant enhancement is found in the $\gamma$-decay strength for transitions with $E_\gamma < 3$ MeV. At present, this is the most neutron-rich nucleus displaying this feature, proving that this phenomenon is not restricted to stable nuclei. We have performed $E1$-strength calculations within the quasiparticle time-blocking approximation, which describe our data above $E_\gamma \simeq 5$ MeV very well. Moreover, large-scale shell-model calculations indicate an $M1$ nature of the low-energy $\gamma$ strength. This turns out to be remarkably robust with respect to the choice of interaction, truncation and model space, and we predict its presence in the whole isotopic chain, in particular the neutron-rich $^{72,74,76}\mathrm{Ni}$.

High-entropy ejections from magnetized proto-neutron star winds: implications for heavy element nucleosynthesis

Although initially thought to be promising for production of the r-process nuclei, standard models of neutrino-heated winds from proto-neutron stars (PNSs) do not reach the requisite neutron-to-seed ratio for production of the lanthanides and actinides. However, the abundance distribution created by the r-, rp-, or νp-processes in PNS winds depends sensitively on the entropy and dynamical expansion time-scale of the flow, which may be strongly affected by high magnetic fields. Here, we present results from magnetohydrodynamic simulations of non-rotating neutrino-heated PNS winds with strong dipole magnetic fields from 1014 to 1016 G, and assess their role in altering the conditions for nucleosynthesis. The strong field forms a closed zone and helmet streamer configuration at the equator, with episodic dynamical mass ejections in toroidal plasmoids. We find dramatically enhanced entropy in these regions and conditions favourable for third-peak r-process nucleosynthesis if the wind is neutron-rich. If instead the wind is proton-rich, the conditions will affect the abundances from the νp-process. We quantify the distribution of ejected matter in entropy and dynamical expansion time-scale, and the critical magnetic field strength required to affect the entropy. For B ≳1015 G, we find that ≳10−6 M⊙ and up to ∼10−5 M⊙ of high-entropy material is ejected per highly magnetized neutron star birth in the wind phase, providing a mechanism for prompt heavy element enrichment of the universe. Former binary companions identified within (magnetar-hosting) supernova remnants, the remnants themselves, and runaway stars may exhibit overabundances. We provide a comparison with a semi-analytic model of plasmoid eruption and discuss implications and extensions.

Study of photon strength functions via (γ→, γ′, γ″) reactions at the γ3-setup

One of the basic ingredients for the modelling of the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements are so-called photon strength functions and the assumption of the Brink-Axel hypothesis. This hypothesis has been studied for many years by numerous experiments using different and complementary reactions. The present manuscript aims to introduce a model-independent approach to study photon strength functions via γ-γ coincidence spectroscopy of photoexcited states in 128Te. The experimental results provide evidence that the photon strength function extracted from photoabsorption cross sections is not in an overall agreement with the one determined from direct transitions to low-lying excited states.

Heavy Element Nucleosynthesis

This contribution deals with the important subject of the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in the Galaxy. After an overview of several observational features, the physical processes responsible mainly for the formation of heavy elements will be described and linked to possible stellar sites and to galactic chemical evolution. In particular, we focus on the neutron-capture processes, namely the s-process (slow neutron capture) and the r-process (rapid neutron capture) and discuss some problems in connection with their sites and their outcome. The aim is to give a brief overview on the exciting subject of the heavy element nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy, emphasizing its importance to trace the galactic chemical evolution and illustrating the challenge of this subject.

Nuclear physics uncertainties of the astrophysical γ-process studied through the 64Zn(p,α)61Cu and 64Zn(p,γ)65Ga reactions

In a recent work, the cross section measurement of the 64Zn(p,α)61Cu reaction was used to prove that the standard α-nucleus optical potentials used in astrophysical network calculation fail to reproduce the experimental data at energies relevant for heavy element nucleosynthesis. In the present paper the analysis of the obtained experimental data are continued by comparing the results with the predictions using different parameters. It is shown that the recently suggested modification of the standard optical potential leads to a better description of the data.

Neutron Star Mergers and Nucleosynthesis of Heavy Elements

The existence of neutron star mergers has been supported since the discovery of the binary pulsar and the observation of its orbital energy loss, consistent with General Relativity. They are considered nucleosynthesis sites of the rapid neutron-capture process (r-process), which is responsible for creating approximately half of all heavy elements beyond Fe and is the only source of elements beyond Pb and Bi. Detailed nucleosynthesis calculations based on the decompression of neutron star matter are consistent with solar r-process abundances of heavy nuclei. Neutron star mergers have also been identified with short-duration [Formula: see text]-ray bursts via their IR afterglow. The high neutron densities in ejected matter permit a violent r-process, leading to fission cycling of the heaviest nuclei in regions far from (nuclear) stability. Uncertainties in several nuclear properties affect the abundance distributions. The modeling of astrophysical events also depends on the hydrodynamic treatment, the occurrence of a neutrino wind after the merger and before the possible emergence of a black hole, and the properties of black hole accretion disks. We discuss the effect of nuclear and modeling uncertainties and conclude that binary compact mergers are probably a (or the) dominant site of the production of r-process nuclei in our Galaxy.

Signatures of hypermassive neutron star lifetimes on r-process nucleosynthesis in the disc ejecta from neutron star mergers

We investigate the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in the winds ejected by accretion disks formed in neutron star mergers. We compute the element formation in disk outflows from hypermassive neutron star (HMNS) remnants of variable lifetime, including the effect of angular momentum transport in the disk evolution. We employ long-term axisymmetric hydrodynamic disk simulations to model the ejecta, and compute r-process nucleosynthesis with tracer particles using a nuclear reaction network containing $\sim 8000$ species. We find that the previously known strong correlation between HMNS lifetime, ejected mass, and average electron fraction in the outflow is directly related to the amount of neutrino irradiation on the disk, which dominates mass ejection at early times in the form of a neutrino-driven wind. Production of lanthanides and actinides saturates at short HMNS lifetimes ($\lesssim 10$ ms), with additional ejecta contributing to a blue optical kilonova component for longer-lived HMNSs. We find good agreement between the abundances from the disk outflow alone and the solar r-process distribution only for short HMNS lifetimes ($\lesssim 10$ ms). For longer lifetimes, the rare-earth and third r-process peaks are significantly under-produced compared to the solar pattern, requiring additional contributions from the dynamical ejecta. The nucleosynthesis signature from a spinning black hole (BH) can only overlap with that from a HMNS of moderate lifetime ($\lesssim 60$ ms). Finally, we show that angular momentum transport not only contributes with a late-time outflow component, but that it also enhances the neutrino-driven component by moving material to shallower regions of the gravitational potential, in addition to providing additional heating.

Microphysics in the Gamma-Ray Burst Central Engine

Abstract We calculate the structure and evolution of a gamma-ray burst central engine where an accreting torus has formed around the newly born black hole. We study the general relativistic, MHD models and we self-consistently incorporate the nuclear equation of state. The latter accounts for the degeneracy of relativistic electrons, protons, and neutrons, and is used in the dynamical simulation, instead of a standard polytropic γ-law. The EOS provides the conditions for the nuclear pressure in the function of density and temperature, which evolve with time according to the conservative MHD scheme. We analyze the structure of the torus and outflowing winds, and compute the neutrino flux emitted through the nuclear reaction balance in the dense and hot matter. We also estimate the rate of transfer of the black-hole rotational energy to the bipolar jets. Finally, we elaborate on the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in the accretion flow and the wind, through computations of the thermonuclear reaction network. We discuss the possible signatures of the radioactive element decay in the accretion flow. We suggest that further detailed modeling of the accretion flow in the GRB engine, together with its microphysics, may be a valuable tool to constrain the black-hole mass and spin. It can be complementary to the gravitational wave analysis if the waves are detected with an electromagnetic counterpart.

Neutrino-heated winds from millisecond protomagnetars as sources of the weak r-process

We explore heavy element nucleosynthesis in neutrino-driven winds from rapidly-rotating, strongly magnetized proto-neutron stars for which the magnetic dipole is aligned with the rotation axis, and the field is assumed to be a static force-free configuration. We process the proto-magnetar wind trajectories calculated by Vlasov et al 2014 through the r-process nuclear reaction network SkyNet using contemporary models for the evolution of the wind electron fraction during the proto-neutron star cooling phase. Although we do not find a successful second or third peak r-process for any rotation period P, we show that proto-magnetars with P around 1-5 ms produce heavy element abundance distributions that extend to higher nuclear mass number than from otherwise equivalent spherical winds (with the mass fractions of some elements enhanced by factors of 100-1000). The heaviest elements are synthesized by outflows emerging along flux tubes which graze the closed zone and pass near the equatorial plane outside the light cylinder. Due to dependence of the nucleosynthesis pattern on the magnetic field strength and rotation rate of the proto-neutron star, natural variations in these quantities between core collapse events could contribute to the observed diversity of the abundances of weak r-process nuclei in metal-poor stars. Further diversity, including possibly even a successful third-peak r-process, could be achieved for misaligned rotators with non-zero magnetic inclination with respect to the rotation axis. If proto-magnetars are central engines for GRBs, their relativistic jets should contain a high mass fraction of heavy nuclei of characteristic average mass number A of order 100, providing a possible source for ultra-high energy cosmic rays comprised of heavy nuclei with an energy spectrum that extends beyond the nominal GZK cut-off for protons or iron nuclei.

Neutron-capture rates for explosive nucleosynthesis: the case of 68Ni(n, γ)69Ni

Neutron-capture reactions play an important role in heavy element nucleosynthesis, since they are the driving force for the two processes that create the vast majority of the heavy elements. When a neutron capture occurs on a short-lived nucleus, it is extremely challenging to study the reaction directly and therefore the use of indirect techniques is essential. The present work reports on such an indirect measurement that provides strong constraints on the 68Ni(n, γ)69Ni reaction rate. This is done by populating the compound nucleus 69Ni via the β decay of 69Co and measuring the γ-ray deexcitation of excited states in 69Ni. The β-Oslo method was used to extract the γ-ray strength function and the nuclear level density. In addition the half-life of 69Co was extracted and found to be in agreement with previous literature values. Before the present results, the 68Ni(n, γ)69Ni reaction was unconstrained and the purely theoretical reaction rate was highly uncertain. The new uncertainty on the reaction rate based on the present experiment (variation between upper and lower limit) is approximately a factor of 3. The commonly used reaction libraries JINA-REACLIB and BRUSLIB are in relatively good agreement with the experimental rate. The impact of the new rate on weak r-process calculations is discussed.

The role of medium modifications for neutrino-pair processes from nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung

In this article the neutrino-pair production from nucleon-nucleon (NN) bremsstrahlung is explored via medium-modifications of the strong interactions at the level of the one-pion exchange approximation. It governs the bulk part of the NN interaction at low densities relevant for the neutrino physics in core-collapse supernova studies. The resulting medium modified one-pion exchange rate for the neutrino-pair processes is implemented in simulations of core collapse supernovae in order to study the impact on the neutrino signal emitted from the deleptonization of the nascent proto-neutron star. Consequences for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements of the material ejected from the PNS surface are discussed.

Neutron excess number and nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in a type Ia supernova explosion

Type Ia supernovae produce very powerful burst of light, which can be observed to high redshift. This fact is very attractive for cosmological applications. For supernova light curve modeling, it is very important to know the amount of Fe and Ni, formed during the explosion. In this paper, we explore both the chemical composition of the ejected supernova shells and the possibility of weak r-process under increased neutron excess number based on a set of trajectories of tracer particles, calculated in a hydrodynamic model of SNIa explosion. It is shown that no r-process elements are synthesized in the considered supernova model, even for an increased neutron excess number (Ye ∼ 0.4) because of the slow evolution of temperature and density along chosen trajectories. The results of explosive nucleosynthesis are discussed.

Nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in the r-process

The current state of the problem of heavy-element production in the astrophysical r-process is surveyed. The nucleosynthesis process in the neutron-star-merger scenario, within which the problem of free-neutron source is solved, is considered most comprehensively. A model that describes well the observed abundances of heavy elements is examined. Theoretical approaches used in this model to calculate a number of features of short-lived neutron-rich nuclei are described. The contributions of various fission processes to the production of heavy elements are assessed. The possibility of superheavy-element production in the r-process is demonstrated.

RELATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE WEAK, MAIN, AND FISSION-RECYCLING r-PROCESS

ABSTRACT There has been a persistent conundrum in attempts to model the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements by rapid neutron capture (the r-process). Although the locations of the abundance peaks near nuclear mass numbers 130 and 195 identify an environment of rapid neutron capture near closed nuclear shells, the abundances of elements just above and below those peaks are often underproduced by more than an order of magnitude in model calculations. At the same time, there is a debate in the literature as to what degree the r-process elements are produced in supernovae or the mergers of binary neutron stars. In this paper we propose a novel solution to both problems. We demonstrate that the underproduction of nuclides above and below the r-process peaks in main or weak r-process models (like magnetohydrodynamic jets or neutrino-driven winds in core-collapse supernovae) can be supplemented via fission fragment distributions from the recycling of material in a neutron-rich environment such as that encountered in neutron star mergers (NSMs). In this paradigm, the abundance peaks themselves are well reproduced by a moderately neutron-rich, main r-process environment such as that encountered in the magnetohydrodynamical jets in supernovae supplemented with a high-entropy, weakly neutron-rich environment such as that encountered in the neutrino-driven-wind model to produce the lighter r-process isotopes. Moreover, we show that the relative contributions to the r-process abundances in both the solar system and metal-poor stars from the weak, main, and fission-recycling environments required by this proposal are consistent with estimates of the relative Galactic event rates of core-collapse supernovae for the weak and main r-process and NSMs for the fission-recycling r-process.

Effects of axions on nucleosynthesis in massive stars

We investigate the effect of axion cooling on nucleosynthesis in a massive star with $16{M}_{\ensuremath{\bigodot}}$ by a standard stellar evolution calculation. We find that axion cooling suppresses nuclear reactions in carbon, oxygen, and silicon burning phases because of the extraction of the energy. As a result, larger amounts of the already synthesized neon and magnesium remain without being consumed to produce further, heavier elements. Even in the case with axion-photon coupling constant ${g}_{a\ensuremath{\gamma}}={10}^{\ensuremath{-}11}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, which is six times smaller than the current upper limit, the amount of neon and magnesium that remain just before the core-collapse supernova explosion is considerably larger than the standard value. This implies that we could give a more stringent constraint on ${g}_{a\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ from the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in massive stars.
