Home health care is a reality, and this presents the opportunity to be creative and experience new and unique innovations within the home care arena. One such innovation is the development of a home health care chaplaincy program. This article explains and communicates how patients and their families/caregivers can benefit from home visits by a chaplain. Patients are often not hospitalized long enough to be assessed and assisted with regard to their religious or spiritual care needs. This area of care is just as important as the physical/medical aspects of care, and in some situations perhaps more so. The chaplain program developed at Scripps Home Health Care Services (SHHCS) shows how needs beyond the physical, mental, social, and emotional aspects of care can be assessed and provided. Spiritual assistance in home care should not be neglected.
