They are: the structure of the health services, their performance, their coverage, and the degree to which the health needs of the population are met (1,2,3). This paper attempts to present an overview of the Mexican health care system through analysis of these four aspects in the country as a whole as well as in each of the main health service agencies. Nevertheless, reference not only to the satisfaction of health needs but also to the fulfillment of macroeconomic, macrosocial, and political needs is made. A panorama of the present situation and distribution of the manpower, material, and financial resources is presented. Finally, some alternatives for the reorganization of the Mexican health care system are discussed.
