Health-promoting lifestyle and life satisfaction in full-time employed adults with congenital heart disease: grit as a mediator.

Enhancing life satisfaction is vital for adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). Life satisfaction potentially correlates with a health-promoting lifestyle and grit. However, the mediating role of grit-a trait marked by perseverance and long-term goal-oriented passion-between a health-promoting lifestyle and life satisfaction in ACHD remains unverified. This study aimed to examine the relationships between health-promoting lifestyle, grit, and life satisfaction in full-time employed ACHD and to confirm the mediating role of grit. A total of 181 full-time employed ACHD aged 20-59 years with patient-reported New York Heart Association class I-IV were recruited from two medical centers in northern Taiwan. Participants completed questionnaires, including the short version of the Chinese Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile scale, Grit-10 scale, and Satisfaction with Life Scale between February and December 2022. Data analysis employed the Hayes PROCESS macro. Health-promoting lifestyle, grit, and life satisfaction were discovered to be positively correlated. Overall grit score was a partial mediator between a health-promoting lifestyle and life satisfaction, accounting for 20% of the total variation. Of the grit domains, perseverance served as a partial mediator between a health-promoting lifestyle and life satisfaction, accounting for 32% of the total variation, whereas passion had a nonsignificant mediation effect. A health-promoting lifestyle boosts ACHD individuals' life satisfaction through grit, particularly perseverance. Integrating grit into such a lifestyle could benefit from comprehending support systems and influential factors aiding grit development for enhanced life satisfaction.

The Longitudinal Relationship Between eHealth Literacy, Health-Promoting Lifestyles, and Health-Related Quality of Life Among College Students: A Cross-Lagged Analysis.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the longitudinal associations between eHealth literacy, health-promoting lifestyles, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among college students.MethodsFrom December 2019 (T1) to December 2020 (T2), we administered the eHealth literacy scale, Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), and Short-Form Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile Scale to 1,181 college students in Jinan, China. Participants were recruited for 12 months for the two-stage survey.ResultsStable positive correlations were shown between eHealth literacy, health-promoting lifestyles, and HRQoL across time. The cross-lagged analysis showed that eHealth literacy at T1 predicted health-promoting lifestyles at T2 (β = 0.080, P = 0.006); however, health-promoting lifestyles at T1 did not predict eHealth literacy at T2 (β = −0.026, P = 0.499). HRQoL at T1 predicted health-promoting lifestyles at T2 (β = 0.147, P < 0.001); however, similar to the eHealth literacy finding, health-promoting lifestyles at T1 did not predict HRQoL at T2 (β = 0.045, P = 0.142). eHealth literacy was also bi-directionally associated with HRQoL, and the prediction effect of eHealth literacy at T1 to HRQoL at T2 (β = 0.078, P = 0.008) was slightly higher than the prediction effect of HRQoL at T1 to eHealth literacy at T2 (β = 0.074, P = 0.023).ConclusioneHealth literacy and HRQoL may be antecedents for college students' health-promoting lifestyles. There may be significant bi-directional relationships between eHealth literacy and HRQoL.

Factors affecting the adoption of health-promoting behaviours in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome: a cross-sectional study.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate health-promoting lifestyle status and associated risk factors in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).DesignCross-sectional study.SettingThis study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Guizhou, China from December 2020 to June 2021.ParticipantsA total of 366 participants (18–45 years) diagnosed with PCOS were recruited from the outpatient departments.MeasuresSociodemographic characteristics were collected, and health-promoting behaviours were measured using the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile scale. Anxiety status was measured using the Zung’s Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, depression status using the Zung’s Self-Rating Depression Scale and self-efficacy using the Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale. Multiple stepwise linear regression was conducted to assess the risk factors associated with the health-promoting behaviours of the study participants.ResultsThe participants had a poor health-promoting behaviours (88.54±17.44). The highest score in all dimensions was spiritual growth (16.68±4.98), while physical activity (12.71±2.68) was the lowest. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the main factors influencing the development and maintenance of health-promoting behaviours among participants were education (B=10.788, p<0.001), depression (B=−0.377, p<0.001), anxiety (B=−0.333, p<0.001) and self-efficacy (B=0.938, p=0.002). The model showed 74.40% variance shared between the dependent and independent variables (R2=74.40, F=264.633, p<0.001).ConclusionHealth-promoting behaviours are minimal among patients with PCOS, and improving negative emotions and enhancing behavioural awareness and self-efficacy are necessary to increase the adoption of health-promoting behaviours among patients with PCOS.Trial registration numberChiCTR2000034572.

Effect of lifestyle modification on schizophrenia patients on antipsychotics

Background Schizophrenia affects physical health, represented in the form of change in behavior, such as decrease in physical activity, tendency to isolation, and changes in eating behavior, including increase intake of food (junk food and fat) and increase in consumption of sugar. Patients with schizophrenia tent to increase consumption of cigarettes and caffeine. All of these contribute toward having a bad effect on physical health, as they increased the risk of occurrence of comorbid diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Although there is treatment for schizophrenia, it has serious adverse effects, including sleepiness and slowness, weight gain, interference with sex life, and increased chance of developing diabetes and hypertension.Patients and methods A total of 36 patients underwent programmed lifestyle modification, which include pharmacological intervention and lifestyle interventions, including psychoeducational, dietary, and exercise programs. The psychoeducational program focused on the roles of eating and activity in weight management. Dietary program included individualized well-balanced diet plan for each patient by a clinical nutritionist in the hospital according to patient’s measurements, physical health, and acceptance. Exercise program included aerobic exercise intervention and stretching-toning control program, which was planned by the physical trainer of the hospital in the playground. Assessment is done at the beginning of the study and monthly through 3-month duration. We used Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale to assess and follow-up symptoms of schizophrenia, GASS for follow-up of adverse effects of antipsychotics, and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile Scale II to detect the effect of lifestyle modification.Results The mean age of the studied group of patients was 34.5±5.87 years, with 56.41% of them being male. Overall, 25% of patients were found to have MetS at the beginning of the study, and after 3 months of commitment to the program of lifestyle modification, they decreased to 16.67%. There was a significant difference between the studied participants regarding metabolic parameters throughout the 3 months. There was significant improvement in all other dimensions of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale and significant improvement in total GASS scale after the second months of commitment of lifestyle modification, with significant improvement in all dimension except for cardiovascular and screening for diabetes.Conclusion Schizophrenia and antipsychotics have an effect on lifestyle of the patients, leading to more exposure of them to medical comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and MetS, and it also effects the sedentary life, diet, and smoking. This can be avoided by applying a lifestyle modification program that targets to improve quality of life, symptoms of schizophrenia, and decreased number of relapses by increasing adherence to treatment.

Preconception Care Health Education for Female Workers of Reproductive Age in Japan Evaluation up to 6 Months after the Program

Objectives: The aim of this study was to implement a health education program for education of preconception care (PCC) for female workers of reproductive age through a seminar and to evaluate the program based on PCC knowledge and awareness and behaviors before the seminar and at 3 and 6 months after the seminar. Methods: A small group health education seminar was implemented using leaflets for 84 female workers of reproductive age, age 20 to 35 years old, and an intervention by group discussion and feedback was provided. Of these participants, 60 (71%) who provided valid survey responses were included in the analysis. The primary outcome indicators were PCC knowledge, PCC awareness and behaviors, and a food frequency questionnaire, and the secondary outcome indicators were self-efficacy and the health awareness and stress management subscales of the Health-Promotion Lifestyle Profile scale. The survey was conducted three times, before the seminar and at 3 and 6 months after the seminar, and the results were compared. Results: The percentage of individuals with PCC knowledge was significantly increased at 3 months after the seminar as compared with before the seminar, and it remained at this level even at 6 months after the seminar. The percentage of individuals with PCC awareness and behaviors was significantly increased for the items actively eat foods containing folic acid, prevent sexually transmitted diseases, and conduct self-examinations for breast cancer at 3 months after the seminar and for the items eat well-balanced meals, make the mind active, prevent sexually transmitted diseases, and conduct self-examinations for breast cancer at 6 months after the seminar. Furthermore, the score for the health awareness subscale of the Health-Promotion Lifestyle Profile scale was significantly increased at 6 months after the seminar. Conclusion: The health education program established PCC knowledge at 6 months after the seminar and improved some PCC awareness and behaviors. Therefore, it was suggested that the program would be effective for education of PCC for female workers of reproductive age.

Italian Psychometric Validation of the Multidimensional Students’ Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile Scale

The present study examines the factorial structure and assesses the psychometric properties of the adapted multidimensional Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II Scale, considering a sample of Italian university students who participated to an online survey. The original 52-items Scale showed a high overall internal consistency. Four of the six subscales were associated with good values of the Cronbach’s α coefficient, whereas two subscales had lower values. Hence corrected item-total correlation was calculated and 26 items that decreased the scale’s reliability were deleted. The remaining 26 items were first subjected to Principal Component Analysis that suggested a conceptually meaningful five-factor model. This result was further supported by the first-order confirmatory factor analysis, in which all the factor loadings were statistically significant. The internal consistency and the composite reliability for the reduced version of the Scale and its subscales have shown a good reliability for the measurement models. The multidimensionality of the scale was also confirmed by a second-order factor model.

Assessing healthy lifestyles in female university students: Eastern province, Saudi Arabia

Aims: This study aim to explore female undergraduates' healthy behaviors, to explore significant differences in their healthy behaviors, and to discover potential correlations between students' healthy behaviors and their demographic variables. Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted during the academic year 2015–2016. The Health-Promotion Lifestyle Profile scale (HPLP-II) was distributed to all 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year undergraduate female students in 6 health professions at Imam AbdulRahman Bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia. Descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted. Results: A total of 324 participants out of 375 completed the questionnaire with 86.4% response rate. The mean age was 20.69 ± 1.082. The overall/total score for the HPLP-II was 2.46 ± 0.42. There were significant differences in students' healthy behaviors and associations between HPLP-II scores and demographic characteristics. Conclusions: The overall score for HPLP-II was low. The spiritual growth subscale had the highest mean, and physical activity had the lowest mean. The mean scores for HPLP-II of juniors and younger students were higher compared with those of senior and older students. As students progressed through their academic years, their stress management declined. Students in the clinical nutrition profession scored higher on the nutrition subscale than students in the other professions. Therefore, considering female students' low scores in the dimensions of healthy behaviors, it is recommended that educators in charge of decision-making introduce physical and health education to the general curriculum for female university-level students. Facilities should also be provided to encourage healthy lifestyles in female students.

Health promotion lifestyle profile scores are not associatedwith obesity in high school students.

Obesity is a cause of preventable morbidity and mortality with an increasing prevalence. Health promoting lifestyle activities maintain or improve an individual's health and in adolescence many habits are configured. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents and the relation between obesity and health promoting behaviors. This is a cross-sectional study including 848 high school students aged 15-17. All students were administered a questionnaire including the Health Promotion Life-Style Profile Scale. Weight and height were measured and body mass index was calculated. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests, and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Of the included students, 80.8% (n = 685) had normal ranges of body mass index, 10.1% (n = 86) were overweight, and 9.1% (n = 77) were obese. The Health Promotion Life-Style Profile Scale average score was found to be 126.7 ± 20.4. There was no significant difference between Health Promotion Life-Style Profile Scale and obesity (P = 0.921). Adolescence is an era of development when individuals start to implement their own features to life. According to this study adolescents do not perform health promoting lifestyles whether they are obese or not.

Lifestyle related factors & impact of metabolic syndrome on quality of life, level of functioning & self-esteem in patients with bipolar disorder & schizophrenia.

Background & objectives:Though studies have reported high prevalence rates of metabolic syndrome among patients with bipolar disorder (BPAD) and schizophrenia, there is lack of data on the impact of the same on the patients’ life. This study was aimed to assess the lifestyle related factors associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and to study the impact of MetS on functioning and quality of life (QOL) in patients with BPAD and schizophrenia.Methods:A total of 102 patients with BPAD and 72 patients with schizophrenia attending the output unit of a tertiary care hospital in north India were evaluated for MetS. These patients were assessed on Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile scale II (HPLP II), World Health Organization QOL -Bref Version (WHOQOL-Bref), Impact of Weight on Quality of Life- Lite version (IWOQOL -Lite), Body weight, Image and Self-esteem Evaluation questionnaire (BWISE), Obesity-related Problem scale (OP scale) and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale.Results:MetS was associated with lower scores on domains of health responsibility and nutrition habit domain on HPLP-II scale in both groups, and additionally on physical activity and stress management domain in BPAD group. On WHOQOL-Bref, MetS was associated with lower scores on the domains of physical and psychological health in both groups. On IWQOL–Lite, scores on personal distress and self esteem domains were higher in those with obesity in both groups and also on physical activity domain in schizophrenia group. Those with MetS had lower level of functioning as measured by GAF in schizophrenia group. Fulfillment of higher number of criteria of MetS correlated with poorer quality of life and higher problems in both groups.Interpretation & conclusions:Many modifiable lifestyle factors increase the risk of MetS. MetS was found to be associated with poorer QOL in patients with BPAD and schizophrenia; in addition, obesity led to poor self-esteem and excessive personal distress.

Effect of parity on healthy promotion lifestyle behavior in women

Background: Health-promoting lifestyle behaviors are not only for the prevention of a disease or discomfort, but are also behaviors that aim to improve the individual’s general health and well-being. Nurses have an important position in the development of healthy lifestyle behaviors in women.Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of parity on health-promoting lifestyle behaviors in women.Method/Design: This descriptive and cross-sectional survey was performed in Adana, Turkey. This study was conducted with 352 women. The questionnaire consisted of two parts; the first part consisted of questions that assessed the socio-demographic and obstetric characteristics, and the second part employed the “Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile Scale” (HPLP). Data analysis included percentage, arithmetic average, and ANOVA tests.Results: The results revealed that 24.1% of the women had no parity, 13.6% had one parity, 30.7% had two parities, 14.6% had three parities, and 17% had four and above parities. The mean total HPLP was 126.66±18.12 (interpersonal support subscale, 24.46±4.02; nutrition subscale, 21.59±3.92; self-actualization subscale, 24.42±4.30; stress management subscale, 18.73±3.81; health responsibility subscale, 21.75±4.31; and exercise subscale, 15.71±4.22).Conclusions: The health behavior of women was moderate. A statistically significant correlation was found between the number of parities and the Health Responsibility, Nutrition, Interpersonal Support, which is the subscale of the HPLP Scale.

The Relationships among Health Locus of Control and Resilience, Social Support and Health Promoting Behavior in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Coronary Artery Diseases

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among health locus of control, resilience, social support, and health promoting behavior in patients with coronary artery diseases. Methods: This study utilized a descriptive correlational design using a survey method. The subjects were 165 coronary artery disease patients at the cardiology out-patient clinic of the C university hospital. Data were collected through Health Locus of Control Scale, Resilience Scale, ENRICHD Social Support Instrument, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchial regression. Results: There were significant positive bivariate correlations of health promoting behavior with internal health locus of control, doctors health locus of control, resilience and social support respectively, and correlation between resilience and social support. Among predictors, internal health locus of control (β=.28), social support (β=.28) and resilience (β=.25) had statistically significant influences on health promoting behavior. Conclusion: These results proposed that internal health locus of control, social support and resilience have important influences on health promoting behavior. Nursing interventions to enhance internal health locus of control, resilience and social support might be essential for patients with coronary artery disease in order to promote their health behaviors.

Factors influencing health promoting behaviors of elderly in rural area at Assiut and Sohag governorate

AbstractHealth promotion behavior is one of the main criteria for determining health that is recognized as the basic factor in catching numerous diseases. Aim of this study: to identify the factors affecting health promoting behaviors of elderly in rural areas. Subjects and method: A Descriptive research design was utilized. This study was conducted in four villages. The total number of sample was 1000 elderly. An interview questionnaire was used to collect data about: Personal information and availability of health care services, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile scale (HPLPII), perception of chronic diseases and social support scale. Results: The main results of study 46.9% had moderate total health promoting behaviors while 42.6% had low total health promoting behaviors. Statistically significant difference between all personal data of elderly and their total health promoting behaviors. Also It was noticed that majority (89,9 %) of elderly have social support. Conclusion: the total score of elderly’s health promoting behaviors who were living in Assiut & Sohag governorates ranged between the low and moderate level. Recommendations: The routine services for the elderly should improve the ability of health personnel to provide knowledge and information on HPB as well as to educate the caregivers and to motivate the elderly to engage in daily practice of HPB.

Prospective physical education and sports teachers' healthy lifestyle behaviors

The present research was a descriptive study which was designed to determine prospective physical education and sports teachers' healthy lifestyle behaviors and variables affecting them. 312 prospective teachers, who were studying their 1, 2nd, 3rd and 4th years at the department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching of different universities during the Academic Year of 2012-13, were participated in the research. The data was collected by using Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile Scale and by using a form asking for personal features of participants. Mann Whitney U test and t-test were used to analyze data. Results of the study indicated that healthy lifestyle sub-dimensions except for nutrition revealed significant relationships based on gender (p 0.05).

Gulhane Military Medical Academy Training Hospital, the applicant Determination of Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors in Individuals Diagnosed Coronary Artery Disease

AIM: The aim of the study, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) diagnosed with identification of individuals in specific behaviors to improve health, health status and related factors to determine the levels of detection. METHODS: This descriptive study of data types of the Gulhane Military Medical Academy (GATA) Hospital cardiology clinic in December 2009 - February 2010 were collected. The study group, at least 6 months before the diagnosis of CAD area, between the ages of 20-65 individuals who accept and participate in the study (n = 300) formed. Sociodemographic characteristics and health behaviors of the personal information form for the 33-item, 52-item scale of a healthy lifestyle behaviors and health status of the single-item scale working group of the detection technique applied to the face-to-face interview. The aim of the study, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) for the development of health behaviors in the case of individuals diagnosed with the identification, health status and related factors to determine the levels of detection. The statistical analysis techniques such as Mann Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis were used for the comparison. RESULTS: Of the group 57,7% were males, 46,3% were 50-59 years of age and 56,3% were higher education graduates. As regard to total Health Promotion Life-Style Profile Scale scores statistically significant differences had been found between age, gender, education, disease period, occupation and chronic condition groups. The effectiveness of the Omaha System intervention on the women’s health promotion lifestyle profile and quality of life

This article is a report of a quasi-experimental study of the effectiveness of the Omaha System intervention on the women's health promotion lifestyle profile and the quality of life. The Omaha System is a model for organizing, documenting and evaluating the outcomes of comprehensive, community-based, client-centred care. Therefore, the Omaha System is important for public health nurses whose aim is to protect and promote health. However, few studies addressed the influence of the Omaha System on health promotion activities or quality of life in adult population. The design of the study was one-group pre-test and post-test. The study took place in Turkey in 2007; the sample comprised 76 women from an urban primary healthcare centre. The women completed questionnaires consisting of demographical characteristics, the health promotion lifestyle profile scale developed by Walker and colleagues and the quality of life scale developed by Burckhardt and colleagues. The researcher then visited selected women in their home weekly or biweekly for a 4-month period. At the end of intervention, the scales were applied to the women as the post-test. The mean scores of self-actualization, health responsibility, interpersonal support, stress management subscales of the health promotion lifestyle profile and the total score increased in post-test, except for nutrition subscale. There were statistically significant differences between pre- and post-test scores. This study demonstrated that the Omaha System intervention increases health promotion lifestyle profile of the women. It is recommended as a nursing care to health promotion.

Healthy lifestyle behaviour in university students and influential factors in eastern Turkey

This research was carried out to determine the healthy lifestyle behaviour of university students receiving education in central Erzincan. The population of this descriptive and cross-sectional research included a total of 4506 students receiving education at Erzincan University in the city centre, and the sampling included 981 students selected by a simple random sampling method from these schools. Data were collected between April and May 2008 by using an identification form and the Health Promotion Life-Style Profile (HPLP) Scale. Healthy lifestyle behaviour point averages of students were detected to be at medium level (118.41±20.90). It was established that student's grade, educational level of parents, economic status of the family and the student, the place where the student stays and smoking status of the student resulted in a significant difference in HPLP Scale total score average and the mean score of the majority of subscales.

Postpartum Taiwanese women: their postpartum depression, social support and health‐promoting lifestyle profiles

To reach the Millennium Development Goals, maternal health-promoting behaviours need to be encouraged after childbirth; little is known about the health-promoting behaviour among first-time mothers during their postpartum period. To examine levels of engagement in health-promoting behaviours and related factors among postpartum women in Taiwan. This cross-sectional study was conducted through a convenience sample of 122 qualified women. Participants self-completed a questionnaire and mailed it back using a stamped, self-addressed envelope from July to September 2003. Instruments of this study included a demographic questionnaire as well as three Likert-type scales: the Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile scale, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression scale and a self-developed social support scale. The average overall Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile score was low (mean, 2.83 SD 1.35), with exercise rated lowest among the six subscales. Postpartum women perceived that they had high levels of social support from their mothers-in-law, mothers and husbands. An astonishing 42.6% of women experienced postnatal depression. Based on results of multiple regressions, 25% of the variance in health-promoting lifestyle practices was explained by postpartum depression and social support. Social support was found to predict all subscales significantly except exercise. Postpartum depression can significantly predict self-actualization, interpersonal relationships, nutrition and stress management. All modifying factors were excluded from the regression model. This study validates the theoretical relationships among concepts in the Health Promotion Model. Nursing interventions are recommended which are tailored to enhance women's social support and decrease their depression to promote their pursuit of healthy lifestyles. This study highlights the implications of social support to nursing practice, especially in Chinese culture which has a strict ritual during a women's postpartum period. Findings of this study provide information and data for service planning and community care to support postpartum care in the communities.

Multiple Sclerosis: Health-Promoting Behaviors of Spousal Caregivers

This pilot study examined the relationship between health-promoting behaviors of spousal caregivers of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) and dependency needs of the afflicted spouses. The study sample included 20 subjects who were residing with their spouses and served as primary caregivers. The data were collected through a semistructured interview of caregiving spouses. The health-promoting lifestyle profile (HPLP) was used to measure health-promoting behavior. The Index of ADL was employed to measure independence in activities of daily living (ADL). Descriptive statistics were calculated for demographic, ADL and health-promoting variables. Pearson product-moment correlations were employed to assess the relationship between the care recipient dependency needs and the health-promoting behavior of the caregiving spouse. Findings revealed a significant inverse relationship between level of recipient dependency and health-promoting behavior of the caregiver (r = -.394, p < .04). Further examination of health behaviors revealed that caregiving wives reported higher total frequency of health-promoting behaviors than did their husband counterparts. Additional analyses revealed subjects scored highest on the self-actualization dimension and lowest on the exercise dimension of the HPLP scale.
