Engagement, initiation, and retention in medication treatment for opioid use disorder among young adults: A narrative review of challenges and opportunities

IntroductionOpioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a catastrophic public health problem for young adults (YAs) and their families. While medication for OUD (MOUD) is safe, effective, and recognized as the standard of care, its' uptake and success have been limited in YAs compared to older adults. MethodsThis narrative review summarizes the existing literature and highlights select studies regarding barriers to YA MOUD, potential explanations for those barriers, and strategies to overcome them. ResultsBarriers are prominent along the entire cascade of care, including: treatment engagement and entry, MOUD initiation, and MOUD retention. Hypothesized explanations for barriers include: developmental vulnerability, inadequate treatment system capacity, stigma against MOUD, among others. Interventions to address barriers include: promotion of family involvement, increasing provider capacity, integration of MOUD into primary care, assertive outreach, and others. ConclusionsIntegrating an adapted version of family coaching from the Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training (CRAFT) and other models into YA MOUD treatment serves as an example of an emerging novel practice that holds promise for broadening the funnel of engagement in treatment and initiation of MOUD, and enhancing treatment outcomes. This and other developmentally-informed approaches should be evaluated as part of a high-priority clinical and research agenda for improving OUD treatment for YAs.

The Impact of Perceived Dysfunctional Parenting Styles on Level of Emotional Intelligence of Young Adults

The present study focused on young adults' perception of their parents' parenting styles, as they perceived them in the sixteen years of their lives, and their impact on their level of emotional intelligence. It was hypothesized that there would be a relationship between different parenting styles and the young adults' emotional intelligence level. The study sample was randomly drawn from various University of Sindh and Jamshoro departments. The total sample was 120 participants (male 30, female = 90) with a mean age of (M= 21.7, SD = 1.7). Two questionnaires were used to collect the data for the study. Parker et al. (1997) developed measures of parenting style Scale (MOPS) and Emotional Intelligence Scale developed by Schutte et al. (1998). Data was analyzed with the help of IBM SPSS (version 28). Results indicated that overall dysfunctional parenting styles (mother and father) are unrelated to the young adults' emotional intelligence level except for one subscale of the mother version, i.e., over control, which is significantly related to emotional intelligence. No significant gender difference was found on the parenting style scale (mother and father versions) or emotional intelligence scale. The results of the current study give valuable insight into cultural sophistication in understanding parenting styles and their impact on positive behaviors in youth. Findings can also be helpful for mental health professionals to understand risk factors contributing to the mental health problems of young adults, develop interventions, and facilitate positive parenting practices.

Relationship between addictions and obesity, physical activity and vascular aging in young adults (EVA-Adic study): a research protocol of a cross-sectional study.

Behavioral and substance addictions are prevalent health problems that, alongside obesity, are linked to reduced physical activity and increased sedentary time. Similarly, arterial stiffness and vascular aging are processes that begin gradually at an early age and are closely associated with morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases. The main objective of this study is to analyze how addictions are related to obesity and body fat distribution, physical activity, sedentary time, arterial stiffness and vascular aging, as well as sleep quality, cognitive function and gender differences in young adults aged between 18 and 34 years. This cross-sectional descriptive observational study will analyze data from 500 subjects (250 men and 250 women) aged 18-34 without cardiovascular disease, selected by simple random sampling with replacement from the urban population of the city center of Salamanca (34,044 people aged 18-34, with 18,450 women and 15,594 men). Behavioral and substance addictions, as well as sleep quality and cognitive impairment will be assessed using questionnaires. The Pittisburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) will be used to measure sleep quality and the Ford questionnaire will be used to measure insomnia in response to stress. For obesity, weight, height, waist and hip circumference, body composition will be measured with the Inbody 230® impedance meter. For physical activity and sedentary time, we will use the Actigraph® accelerometer alongside the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Marshall questionnaire. The Sphygmocor System® will be used for pulse wave analysis and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), while the Vasera VS-2000® will measure cardio ankle vascular index (CAVI) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Vascular aging will be calculated with the 10th and 90th percentiles of cfPWV or baPWV. Demographic, analytical variables will be collected, as will data to assess vascular, cardiac, renal, and brain injury. Addictions are on the rise in today's society, affecting the mental health and well-being of those who suffer from them, generating important social problems such as job loss, family dysfunction, debt and social isolation. Together with obesity, they are prevalent health problems in young adults and are associated with lower physical activity and higher sedentary time. Meanwhile, arterial stiffness and vascular aging are processes that begin gradually at an early age and determine morbidity and mortality caused by cardiovascular diseases. The results of this project will allow us to understand the situation regarding behavioral and substance addictions in young adults. Better understanding of these addictions will in turn facilitate the development of more effective prevention strategies and intervention programs, which can then reduce the negative impact at both the individual and societal levels. Associations between healthy lifestyle behavioral patterns and mental health problems: A latent class analysis of 161,744 Chinese young adults

BackgroundYouth mental health problems are a public health priority. Multiple healthy lifestyle behaviors may cluster into healthy lifestyle behavioral patterns (HLBPs) that increase mental health risks in adolescents and older adults, but little is known regarding young adults. This study aimed to explore the associations between cluster HLBPs and mental health problems in young adults. MethodsWe selected 161,744 young adults aged 20–39 as participants from the database of a Chinese general hospital health management center for the years 2015–2020. The latent class analysis was used to identify HLBPs. ResultsA total of 15.0 % of young adults have at least one mental health problem. Five clusters of HLBPs were identified, characterized as low-risk class (1.6 %), moderate-risk class 1 (12.0 %), moderate-risk class 2 (2.1 %), moderate-risk class 3 (56.8 %), and high-risk class (27.4 %). The odds ratios (ORs) for young adults with two mental health problems increased with the risk grade of HLBPs, while the ORs for young adults with one or three mental health problems ranged from high to low according to the risk grade of HLBPs: high-risk class, moderate-risk class 2, moderate-risk class 3, moderate-risk class 1. LimitationsCross-sectional design and no causal conclusions could be drawn. ConclusionYoung adults demonstrated a cluster phenomenon of healthy lifestyle behaviors and significant associations between HLBPs and mental health problems. Young adults with a higher risk grade for HLBPs were more likely to have mental health problems. Different HLBPs should be taken into account when implementing mental health interventions.

Educational attainment and symptoms of anxiety and depression in young adulthood

Abstract Background Young adulthood is a life phase when mental health problems are common. Although education is known to exert an influence on health, increased knowledge about the links between educational attainment and mental health problems in young adults is needed. The aim of this study was to analyse if educational attainment at the end of upper secondary (U.S.) school (i.e. age 19) predicted self-reported anxiety and depression symptoms two years later. Methods Data was derived from the Swedish population-based cohort study Futura01 (n = 3247; 56% women). Anxiety and depression were measured by self-reports in 2022 (age 21) through the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-4). Educational attainment was measured through linked registry information from 2020 (age 19). Linear regression analysis was used. Covariates included parental country of birth, parental education and family type. Results Co-occurring symptoms of anxiety and depression were more common among young adults with a compulsory than a U.S. academic degree (women: b = 0.79, 95% CI 0.49, 1.09; men: b = 0.77, 95% CI 0.37, 1.17). Symptoms of depression only were more common among women with a compulsory degree (b = 0.60, 95% CI 0.20, 1.00), and among participants with a U.S. vocational degree (women: b = 0.51, 95% CI 0.09, 0.94; men: b = 0.50, 95% CI 0.08, 0.91), compared to those with a U.S. academic degree. Symptoms of anxiety only were, in contrast, less common among men and women with a compulsory degree compared to those with a U.S. academic degree, although statistically significant only among women (b=-0.50, 95% CI -0.88, -0.12). Conclusions Educational level in young adulthood was clearly associated with subsequent symptoms of anxiety and depression but the social patterning varied between symptoms. Lower educational level was linked to a higher reporting of co-occurring anxiety and depression and of depression only, while a higher educational level was linked to a higher reporting of anxiety only. Key messages • Young adult educational attainment was negatively associated with symptoms of co-occurring anxiety and depression and of depression only, but positively associated with symptoms of anxiety only. • In young adulthood educational level is associated with anxiety and depression in complex ways. Efforts to improve educational attainment and/or mental health need to consider this complexity.

Moodpep: Description and Evaluation of an Online Self-Help Program for Young Adults with Feelings of Depression

There is a high prevalence of mental health problems in young adulthood. At the same time, these problems seem to be undertreated. Barriers to seeking help include: stigma, costs and time issues. eHealth interventions could be a promising solution. Moodpep was developed in 2019 as a guided online self-help program for young adults (18+) with depressive symptoms. It is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and includes 8 lessons and 4 themes: activation, relaxation, changing negative cognitions, and goal attainment. The aims of the present article were: giving a detailed description of Moodpep and evaluating the program. The latter was done by analyzing pre-post data and studying participant satisfaction. In total, 31 participants started with the intervention of whom 23 completed it. The results showed that depressive symptoms significantly reduced after following the program, with large effect sizes. At post-test almost all participants scored in the categories of minimal or mild depression. In addition, program and coaching were valued by the participants. In conclusion, Moodpep could provide effective low-threshold help to young people; they could work on mental health at their own time and place, in relative anonymity, and against no or low costs.

Emotion Regulation, Dark Triad Personality, Rule-Breaking Behavior and Mental Health Problems in Young Adults: Structural Equation Modelling

The correlational linkages between dark triad personality and unlawful, antisocial, and repulsive behaviors have been identified in the literature but little is known about the relationship between emotion regulation, dark triad personality, rule-breaking behavior and mental health problems and the processes underlying this association. The current study is an attempt to explore the associative paths of emotion regulation and dark triad personality traits that influence rule-breaking behavior and mental health of young adults. Cross sectional survey was completed by 560 participants between the age ranges of 18-30 years. Structural Equation Modelling was used to analyze the results of the study; results suggested that cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression contribute to different pathways for dark-triad personality, rule-breaking behavior and mental health problems. The cognitive reappraisal has positive effect on mental health problems which is mediated by rule-breaking behavior. Expressive suppression has significant relationship with mental health problems which is mediated by dark triad personality and rule-breaking behavior. Furthermore, dark triad personality is positively associated with rule-breaking behavior and mental health problems. The findings revealed no significant gender differences in terms of emotion regulation, dark triad personality and rule-breaking behavior in young adults whereas; mental health problems are significantly prominent in men as compared to women. This study extended previous research by providing evidence that rule-breaking behavior may be one of the reasons explaining why people with emotion dysregulation and dark triad personality engage in rule-breaking behavior and develop mental health problems. Practical and theoretical implications of the study were also discussed.

PERANCANGAN BUKU INTERAKTIF SEBAGAI MEDIA MANAJEMEN STRES PADA FASE QUARTER-LIFE CRISIS

Social media has become one of the causes of the rise in mental health problems of young adults in recent years. Quarter-Life Crisis is one of the mental health phenomena that become their problem. Lack of awareness about stress management is a problem for sufferers. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research, the technique used in data collection based on interviewing experts in the field of psychology is the most relevant method to get maximum results for research in the field of mental health. Based on the results of the author's research, it was found that sufferers have two main problems in the career and romance aspects. Lack of information, the media, and someone who becomes a "homebase" or the place of emotional release to manage stress becomes a problem for them. Therefore, the writer looks for alternative solutions to this problem by designing an interactive book that aims to be one of the mediums of emotional release for sufferers. With this interactive book, it is hoped that sufferers can relieve the stress that is the impact of this Quarter-Life Crisis by venting their emotions in this interactive book.

Management of Aggression in Young Male Adults Using the Virtual Reality-Based Communication Modification Program

High aggression is common and costly for mental health problems in young adults. Because communication is a universal part of social relationships, including conflicts with others, it could be a possible target for mediating aggression. This study aimed to evaluate whether the virtual reality (VR)-based communication modification program can be utilized for aggression management. Fifty-eight individuals with high aggression (n = 30) and with low aggression (n = 28) completed psychological assessments associated with aggression and functional communication, and they participated in the program, consisting of the three tasks: exploring the communication style, practicing functional communication, and expressing empathy. The participants’ selections and their visual analog scale scores, in response to questions in the tasks, were collected as behavioral data. Results indicated that the high aggression group selected blaming dysfunctional communication style more frequently than the low aggression group. VR-based parameters, expected to reflect dysfunctional communication-related characteristics, showed significantly different correlations with aggression-related traits between the two groups. These findings show that our program may accurately represent an individual’s aggressive traits and elicit the appropriate reaction.

A Tutorial on Cognitive Diagnosis Modeling for Characterizing Mental Health Symptom Profiles Using Existing Item Responses

In research applications, mental health problems such as alcohol-related problems and depression are commonly assessed and evaluated using scale scores or latent trait scores derived from factor analysis or item response theory models. This tutorial paper demonstrates the use of cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) as an alternative approach to characterizing mental health problems of young adults when item-level data are available. Existing measurement approaches focus on estimating the general severity of a given mental health problem at the scale level as a unidimensional construct without accounting for other symptoms of related mental health problems. The prevailing approaches may ignore clinically meaningful presentations of related symptoms at the item level. The current study illustrates CDMs using item-level data from college students (40 items from 719 respondents; 34.6% men, 83.9% White, and 16.3% first-year students). Specifically, we evaluated the constellation of four postulated domains (i.e., alcohol-related problems, anxiety, hostility, and depression) as a set of attribute profiles using CDMs. After accounting for the impact of each attribute (i.e., postulated domain) on the estimates of attribute profiles, the results demonstrated that when items or attributes have limited information, CDMs can utilize item-level information in the associated attributes to generate potentially meaningful estimates and profiles, compared to analyzing each attribute independently. We introduce a novel visual inspection aid, the lens plot, for quantifying this gain. CDMs may be a useful analytical tool to capture respondents’ risk and resilience for prevention research.

Multiple health risk behaviors and mental health from a life course perspective: The Dutch TRAILS study

We examined trajectories of multiple health risk behavior (MHRB) patterns throughout adolescence, and changes in mental health from childhood to young adulthood. Further, we assessed how continuity or onset of MHRBs overall were associated with subsequent changes in mental health, and whether this varied by type of MHRBs.We used six waves of the prospective Dutch TRAILS study (2001–2016; n = 2229), covering ages 11 until 23. We measured MHRBs (substance use: alcohol misuse, cannabis use, smoking; and obesity-related: overweight, physical inactivity, irregular breakfast intake) at three time points during adolescence. We assessed mental health as Youth/Adult Self-report total problems at ages 11 and 23. Latent class growth analyses and ANOVA were used to examine longitudinal trajectories and associations.We identified six developmental trajectories for the total of MHRBs and mental health. Trajectories varied regarding likelihood of MHRBs throughout adolescence, mental health at baseline, and changes in mental health problems in young adulthood. We found no associations for the continuity of overall MHRBs throughout adolescence, and neither for early, mid- or late onset, with changes in mental health problems in young adulthood. However, continuity of MHRBs in the obesity-related subgroup was significantly associated with an increase in mental health problems.Adolescents with the same MHRB patterns may, when reaching adulthood, have different levels of mental health problems, with mental health at age 11 being an important predictor. Further, involvement with obesity-related MHRBs continuously throughout adolescence is associated with increased mental health problems in young adulthood.

Acceptability, Engagement, and Effects of a Mobile Digital Intervention to Support Mental Health for Young Adults Transitioning to College: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BackgroundThe transition from high school to college can exacerbate mental health problems in young adults yet barriers prevent seamless mental health care. Existing digital support tools show promise but are not yet designed to optimize engagement or implementation.ObjectiveThe goal of the research was to test acceptability and effects of an automated digital Mobile Support Tool for Mental Health (MoST-MH) for young adults transitioning to college.MethodsYouths aged 18 years and older with a current mental health diagnosis preparing to transition to college (n=52; 85% female [45/52], 91% White [48/52]) were recruited from a primary care (n=31) and a mental health clinic (n=21). Participants were randomized 2:1 to either receive MoST-MH (n=34) or enhanced Usual Care (eUC; n=18). MoST-MH included periodic text message and web-based check-ins of emotional health, stressors, negative impacts, and self-efficacy that informed tailored self-care support messages. Both eUC and MoST-MH participants received links to a library of psychoeducational videos and were asked to complete web-based versions of the Mental Health Self-Efficacy Scale (MHSES), College Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS), and Client Service Receipt Inventory for Mental Health (C-SRI) monthly for 3 months and the Post-Study System Usability Scale (PSSUQ) at 3-months.ResultsMoST-MH participants were sent a median of 5 (range 3 to 10) text message check-in prompts over the 3-month study period and 100% were completed; participants were sent a median of 2 (range 1 to 8) web-based check-in prompts among which 78% (43/55) were completed. PSSUQ scores indicate high usability (mean score 2.0). Results from the completer analysis demonstrated reductions in mental health symptoms over time and significant between-group effects of MoST-MH compared to eUC on depressive symptom severity (d=0.36, 95% CI 0.08 to 0.64). No significant differences in mental health self-efficacy or mental health health care use were observed.ConclusionsIn this pilot trial, we found preliminary evidence that MoST-MH was engaged with at high rates and found to be highly usable and reduced depression symptoms relative to eUC among youth with mental health disorders transitioning to college. Findings were measured during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the study was not powered to detect differences in outcomes between groups; therefore, further testing is needed.Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT04560075; https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04560075

Contributions of childhood peer victimization and/or maltreatment to young adult anxiety, depression, and suicidality: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundChildhood maltreatment and peer victimization are major risk factors for depression and suicidal behavior. Furthermore, childhood maltreatment increases the risk of peer victimization. Our objective was to distinguish between the contributions of parental maltreatment and peer victimization to the development of mental health problems in young adulthood. Specifically, we tested whether peer victimization alone or in combination with parental maltreatment before 18 years old was associated with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors at age 21 years.MethodsWe analyzed data collected from questionnaires administered in the i-Share (Internet-based Students’ Health ResearchEnterprise) study in France from February 2013 to September 2019 (N = 2271 participants). We performed multinomial and binary logistic regression analyses to assess the single and combined contributions of childhood peer victimization and parental maltreatment to anxiety, depression, and suicidality in adulthood.ResultsNearly one third of students (28.8%) reported at least one mental health problem; 29.8% reported peer victimization alone; 7.5% reported parental maltreatment alone; and 10.3% reported both parental maltreatment and victimization. In multivariate models, compared to participants that did not experience maltreatment or peer victimization, those that experienced peer victimization alone were more likely to report anxiety (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.90; 95% CI: 1.50–2.40), depression (aOR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.46–2.60), or suicidal ideation, without (aOR: 1.62; 95% CI: 1.26–2.09) or with a suicide attempt (aOR: 2.70; 95% CI: 1.51–4.85). Similar associations were observed for participants that experienced maltreatment alone. Participants that experienced both maltreatment and peer victimization were at increased risk of depression (aOR: 2.63; 95% CI: 1.79–3.86) and suicidal ideation, with (aOR: 9.19; 95% CI: 4.98–16.92) and without a suicide attempt (aOR: 2.64; 95% CI: 1.86–3.76).ConclusionsSeparate and combined exposures to parental maltreatment and peer victimization in childhood or adolescence were associated with increased risks of anxiety, depression, and suicidal behaviors. Peer victimization appeared to play a specific role in mental health disorders that were not otherwise explained by polyvictimization. Currently, peer victimization is a frequent, but avoidable type of child abuse; therefore, these findings have implications for policies for preventing and dealing with peer victimization.

A specific neural substrate predicting current and future impulsivity in young adults

Impulsivity (rash action with deleterious outcomes) is common to many psychiatric disorders. While some studies indicate altered amygdala and prefrontal cortical (PFC) activity associated with impulsivity, it remains unclear whether these patterns of neural activity are specific to impulsivity or common to a range of affective and anxiety symptoms. To elucidate neural markers specific to impulsivity, we aimed to differentiate patterns of amygdala–PFC activity and functional connectivity associated with impulsivity from those associated with affective and anxiety symptoms, and identify measures of this circuitry predicting future worsening of impulsivity. Using a face emotion processing task that reliably activates amygdala–PFC circuitry, neural activity and connectivity were assessed in a transdiagnostically-recruited sample of young adults, including healthy (N = 47) and treatment-seeking individuals (N = 67). Relationships were examined between neural measures and impulsivity, anhedonia, and affective and anxiety symptoms at baseline (N = 114), and at 6 months post scan (N = 30). Impulsivity, particularly negative urgency and lack of perseverance, was related to greater amygdala activity (beta = 0.82, p = 0.003; beta = 0.68, p = 0.004; respectively) and lower amygdala–medial PFC functional connectivity (voxels = 60, tpeak = 4.45, pFWE = 0.017; voxels = 335, tpeak = 5.26, pFWE = 0.001; respectively) to facial fear. Left vlPFC, but not amygdala, activity to facial anger was inversely associated with mania/hypomania (beta = −2.08, p = 0.018). Impulsivity 6 months later was predicted by amygdala activity to facial sadness (beta = 0.50, p = 0.017). There were no other significant relationships between neural activity and 6-month anhedonia, affective, and anxiety symptoms. Our findings are the first to associate amygdala–PFC activity and functional connectivity with impulsivity in a large, transdiagnostic sample, providing neural targets for future interventions to reduce predisposition to impulsivity and related future mental health problems in young adults.

Family Type Predicts Mental Health Problems in Young Adults: A Survey of Students at a University in Botswana

In Africa, the structure of the family is changing rapidly. The effects of this change on mental health remain unknown. This study investigated the extent to which different family types (intact, single-mother, and multiple) predict mental health problems in young adults in Botswana (N = 264, mean age = 21.31, SD = 2.40). In a cross-sectional design, the study sampled students registered at various faculties at the University of Botswana. The revised symptoms checklist (SCL-90-R) was used to assess symptoms of mental health problems (depression, anxiety and hostility). Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to obtain odds ratios (ORs) and 95 per cent confidence intervals (CIs) of mental health problems for mother-only and multiple family types relative to the intact family type. Compared to the intact family type, single-mother (OR = 2.34; 95% CI: 1.21, 4.51) and multiple family types (OR = 1.56; CI: 0.88, 2.78) were associated with an increased risk of depression. For anxiety, the ORs were 2.27 (CI: 1.18, 4.38) and 1.10 (CI: 0.56, 1.82) for single-mother and multiple family types respectively. For hostility, the ORs were 2.60 (CI: 1.34, 5.04), and 0.79 (CI: 0.44, 1.42) for single-mother and multiple family types, respectively. Family types predict mental health problems in young adults and therefore the interventions to mitigate the effects should consider family backgrounds and the ramifications of family types for treatment and care.

Suicide Attempts in Turkish University Students: The Role of Cognitive Style, Hopelessness, Cognitive Reactivity, Rumination, Self-esteem, and Personality Traits

Suicide is one of the major public health problems in young adults. Detecting the risk factors and correlates among university students might help identify students who are under risk and who need early interventions for suicide prevention. The current study aimed to investigate the cognitive style, self-esteem, hopelessness, rumination, cognitive reactivity, and personality characteristics of Turkish university students, who previously attempted suicide and who did not. A total of 355 university students (34 previous suicide attempters) were recruited for this study, and they completed the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), the Leiden Index of Depression Sensitivity-Revised, the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), the Cognitive Style Questionnaire-Short Form (CSQ), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Higher RRS, BHS, CSQ scores and lower TIPI-A and RSES scores were significantly associated with a previous suicide attempt. Negative cognitive style, hopelessness, and rumination were significant correlates of a previous suicide attempt. These cognitive factors may be targets in psychotherapy to reduce suicide attempts in college-age individuals.

What happens to young adults who have engaged in self-injurious behavior as adolescents? A 10-year follow-up

This study examined the longitudinal associations between non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in early adolescence and various positive and negative aspects of mental health in young adulthood. The participants were a cohort of regular school students (n = 1064) in grades 7–8 from a Swedish municipality. Nine hundred and ninety-one of these completed an 11-page questionnaire (T1: Mage = 13.7; 50.3% girls); 1 year later, 984 students completed the questionnaire again (T2: Mage = 14.8; 51.1% girls); and 10 years later, 557 took part (T3: Mage = 25.3; 59.2% women). The prevalence of any NSSI (≥ 1 instance) decreased from about 40% in adolescence to 18.7% in young adulthood, while the prevalence of repetitive NSSI (≥ 5 instances) decreased from about 18 to 10%. Compared to individuals who reported no NSSI as adolescents, and controlling for gender and psychological difficulties in adolescence, adolescents with stable repetitive NSSI (i.e., repetitive NSSI at both T1 and T2) showed significantly higher levels of stress, anxiety, NSSI, and difficulties in emotion regulation 10 years later. Even infrequent and unstable repetitive NSSI in adolescence was associated with negative outcomes in young adulthood. These results suggest that stable repetitive NSSI in adolescence is a strong risk factor for mental health problems in young adulthood and that occasional engagement in NSSI in adolescence is an indicator of vulnerability for poorer mental health in young adulthood.

Is there an association between full IQ score and mental health problems in young adults? A study with a convenience sample

BackgroundIntelligence is the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally and to deal effectively with the environment. Previous studies have shown that individuals with intellectual disability, IQ < 70, have increased risk of being diagnosed with one or more mental disorders. We wanted to investigate if this also applies to individuals with IQ between 70 and 85.MethodsIn this study, data was abstracted from a longitudinal follow-up study of individuals with low birth weight and a control group. In the present study, mental health of participants with borderline IQ, defined as a full IQ score 70–84, were compared with mental health of a reference group with full IQ scores ≥85. Mental health at age 19 was assessed using the Schedule for Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia for School-age Children Present and Lifetime (K-SADS P/L) whereby scores meeting the diagnostic criteria for a mental disorder were defined as having mental health problems. In addition the participants completed the ADHD-rating scale and the Autism Spectrum Quotient form (AQ). Logistic regression analyses were used to calculate odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for high scores on the K-SADS.ResultsThirty participants with borderline IQ and 146 controls were included. Sixteen (53%) of the participants with borderline IQ met the diagnostic criteria on the K-SADS for any diagnosis compared with 18 (12%) in the reference group (OR: 6.2; CI: 2.6–14.9). In particular the participants with borderline IQ had excess risk of ADHD and anxiety. These associations were slightly attenuated when adjusted for birth weight and parents’ socioeconomic status.Conclusions53% of the participants with borderline IQ had increased risk for a research assessed psychiatric diagnosis compared to about one in ten in the reference group. The group with borderline IQ also had higher total scores and higher scores on some sub-scores included in the Autism Spectrum Quotient form. Our results points towards an increased vulnerability for mental illness in individuals with borderline low IQ.Trial registrationThe main study is recorded by the Regional Committee for Health Research Ethics in Mid-Norway (as project number 4.2005.2605).

Food Insecurity Is Associated With Poorer Mental Health and Sleep Outcomes in Young Adults

PurposeThe aim of the study was to determine the association between food insecurity, mental health, and sleep outcomes among young adults. Young adulthood represents an important developmental period when educational and economic transitions may increase the risk for food insecurity; however, little is known about associations between food insecurity and health outcomes in this period. MethodsCross-sectional nationally representative data of U.S. young adults aged 24–32 years from Wave IV (2008) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were analyzed in 2018. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted with food insecurity as the independent variable and self-reported mental health (depression, anxiety, and suicidality) and sleep (trouble falling and staying asleep) outcomes as the dependent variables. ResultsOf the 14,786 young adults in the sample, 11% were food insecure. Food-insecure young adults had greater odds of mental health problems including a depression diagnosis (1.67, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.39–2.01), anxiety or panic disorder diagnosis (1.47, 95% CI 1.16–1.87), and suicidal ideation in the past 12 months (2.76, 95% CI 2.14–3.55). Food insecurity was also associated with poorer sleep outcomes including trouble falling (adjusted odds ratio 1.78, 95% CI 1.52–2.08) and staying (adjusted odds ratio 1.67, 95% CI 1.42–1.97) asleep. ConclusionsFood insecurity is associated with poorer mental and sleep health in young adulthood. Health care providers should screen for food insecurity in young adults and provide referrals when appropriate. Future research should test interventions to simultaneously combat food insecurity and mental health problems in young adulthood.

Peer victimization in school and mental and physical health problems in young adulthood: Examining the role of revictimization at the workplace.

Peer victimization during the school years can impair victims' mental and physical health even in adulthood. Moreover, some victims of school bullying may also experience revictimization at work as adults. Later revictimization at work may thus at least partly explain (i.e., mediate) the negative consequences of peer victimization in school. Revictimization at work may also exacerbate (i.e., moderate), the association between peer victimization in school and impaired mental and physical health in adulthood. These hypotheses were tested with 251 participants (61% females) followed from age 12 to 25. Participants reported about their depression symptoms and victimization experiences every year throughout adolescence, workplace victimization at age 22, and mental and physical health symptoms at age 25. Latent path analysis revealed that peer victimization during adolescence was significantly associated with lower overall mental and physical health at age 25 and a small, albeit significant part of this association was mediated by workplace victimization at age 22. These associations were mainly due to specific effects on elevated depression symptoms and paranoid ideation at age 25. In contrast, the moderation hypothesis was not supported. The findings emphasize the importance of reducing school bullying before victims become caught in a cycle of abuse and suffer lasting impairments.
