Ensuring Accuracy and Equity in Vaccination Information From ChatGPT and CDC: Mixed-Methods Cross-Language Evaluation.

In the digital age, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have emerged as important sources of health care information. Their interactive capabilities offer promise for enhancing health access, particularly for groups facing traditional barriers such as insurance and language constraints. Despite their growing public health use, with millions of medical queries processed weekly, the quality of LLM-provided information remains inconsistent. Previous studies have predominantly assessed ChatGPT's English responses, overlooking the needs of non-English speakers in the United States. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the quality and linguistic parity of vaccination information from ChatGPT and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), emphasizing health equity. This study aims to assess the quality and language equity of vaccination information provided by ChatGPT and the CDC in English and Spanish. It highlights the critical need for cross-language evaluation to ensure equitable health information access for all linguistic groups. We conducted a comparative analysis of ChatGPT's and CDC's responses to frequently asked vaccination-related questions in both languages. The evaluation encompassed quantitative and qualitative assessments of accuracy, readability, and understandability. Accuracy was gauged by the perceived level of misinformation; readability, by the Flesch-Kincaid grade level and readability score; and understandability, by items from the National Institutes of Health's PatientEducationMaterials Assessment Tool (PEMAT) instrument. The study found that both ChatGPT and CDC provided mostly accurate and understandable (eg, scores over 95 out of 100) responses. However, Flesch-Kincaid grade levels often exceeded the American Medical Association's recommended levels, particularly in English (eg, average grade level in English for ChatGPT=12.84, Spanish=7.93, recommended=6). CDC responses outperformed ChatGPT in readability across both languages. Notably, some Spanish responses appeared to be direct translations from English, leading to unnatural phrasing. The findings underscore the potential and challenges of using ChatGPT for health care access. ChatGPT holds potential as a health information resource but requires improvements in readability and linguistic equity to be truly effective for diverse populations. Crucially, the default user experience with ChatGPT, typically encountered by those without advanced language and prompting skills, can significantly shape health perceptions. This is vital from a public health standpoint, as the majority of users will interact with LLMs in their most accessible form. Ensuring that default responses are accurate, understandable, and equitable is imperative for fostering informed health decisions across diverse communities.

Evaluation of YouTube as a Health Education Resource for Skin Graft Procedures.

Recent studies indicate that YouTube has become a primary source of healthcare information for patients. Videos about skin graft procedures on YouTube have accumulated millions of views, yet there lacks a publication investigating the educational quality of this content. With current literature revealing misleading healthcare information found on YouTube, this study aims to evaluate the educational quality of videos related to skin graft procedures. YouTube was searched for various terms such as "Skin Graft Procedures" and "Skin Graft Surgery." 105 videos were assessed, with 21 excluded. Four independent reviewers rated the material with the Global Quality Scale (5 = highest quality, 1 = lowest quality) to judge educational value. Viewership, source, modality, and date of upload were also collected from each video and compiled for further analysis. The average Global Quality Scale was 2.60 amongst all videos, with videos led by physicians recording significantly higher scores than those not led by physicians (p<0.01). In comparing educational modalities, physician-led presentations provided the highest educational value, whereas live surgeries and consumer-friendly content contained low educational quality (p<0.01). Assessing videos split into cohorts based on viewership noted a significantly higher Global Quality Scale in videos with lower view counts (p<0.05). Skin graft videos on YouTube largely provide low quality information. Videos performed by physicians, particularly physician-led presentations, significantly improved the educational quality of skin graft content. Physicians must involve themselves in enhancing the quality of online content to better guide patients in navigating treatment options and making healthcare decisions.

Prevalence of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy in the Community of Madrid (Spain), estimation with a capture-recapture method

BackgroundLeber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) typically presents in young adults as bilateral painless subacute visual loss. Prevalence data are scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the validity of different ascertainment sources used in population-based rare diseases registries to detect cases, and to explore the impact of a capture-recapture method in the estimation of the prevalence of LHON in the Autonomous Community of Madrid (ACM) in 2022.MethodsDescriptive cross-sectional population-based study. Potential LHON cases were detected by automatic capture from the healthcare information sources usually explored for the Regional Registry for Rare Diseases (SIERMA). Ophthalmologists provided data from their clinical registry. Positive predictive values (PPV) and sensitivity with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. Global and by sex prevalences were calculated with confimed cases and with those estimated by the capture-recapture method.ResultsA total of 102 potential LHON cases were captured from healthcare information sources, 25 of them (24.5%) finally were confirmed after revision, with an overall PPV of 24.5% (95%CI 17.2–33.7). By source, the electronic clinical records of primary care had the highest PPV (51.2, 95%CI 36.7–65.4). The ophthalmologists clinical registry provided 22 cases, 12 of them not detected in the automatic capture sources. The clinical registry reached a sensitivity of 59.5% (95%CI 43.5–73.6) and the combination of automatic capture sources reached a 67.6% (95%CI: 51.5–80.4). The total confirmed cases were 37, with a mean age of 48.9 years, and a men: women ratio of 2.4:1. Genetic information was recovered in 27 cases, with the m.3460 mutation being the most frequent (12 cases). The global prevalence was 0.55 cases/100,000 inhabitants (95%CI 0.40–0.75), and with the capture-recapture method reached 0.79 cases/100,000 (95%CI 0.60–1.03), a 43.6% higher, 1.15 cases/100,000 (95%CI 0.83–1.58) in men and 0.43 cases/100,000 (95%CI 0.26–0.70) in women.ConclusionsThe prevalence of LHON estimated in the ACM was lower than in other European countries. Population-based registries of rare diseases require the incorporation of confirmed cases provided by clinicians to asure the best completeness of data. The use of more specific coding for rare diseases in healthcare information systems would facilitate the detection of cases. Further epidemiologic studies are needed to assess potential factors that may influence the penetrance of LHON.

Quality assessment of online patient information on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy using the modified Ensuring Quality Information for Patients tool.

Websites and online resources are increasingly becoming patients' main source of healthcare information. It is paramount that high quality information is available online to enhance patient education and improve clinical outcomes. Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy is the gold standard investigation for UGI symptoms and yet little is known regarding the quality of patient orientated websites. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of online patient information on UGI endoscopy using the modified Ensuring Quality Information for Patients (EQIP) tool. Ten search terms were employed to conduct a systematic review. for each term, the top 100 websites identified via a Google search were assessed using the modified EQIP tool. High scoring websites underwent further analysis. Websites intended for professional use by clinicians as well as those containing video or marketing content were excluded. A total of 378 websites were eligible for analysis. The median modified EQIP score for UGI endoscopy was 18/36 (interquartile range: 14-21). The median EQIP scores for the content, identification and structure domains were 8/18, 1/6 and 9/12 respectively. Higher modified EQIP scores were obtained for websites produced by government departments and National Health Service hospitals (p=0.007). Complication rates were documented in only a fifth (20.4%) of websites. High scoring websites were significantly more likely to provide balanced information on risks and benefits (94.6% vs 34.4%, p<0.001). There is an immediate need to improve the quality of online patient information regarding UGI endoscopy. The currently available resources provide minimal information on the risks associated with the procedure, potentially hindering patients' ability to make informed healthcare decisions.

Leveraging web search data in Germany to identify unmet needs of contraceptives on a population-based level: A longitudinal retrospective study.

There are a variety of possible contraceptives available. While medical advice is an important resource for selecting the individual contraceptive, previous research has shown that the Internet has become an increasingly important source of health care information. This study aims to identify key trends in contraception-related web searches in Germany and thus allows conclusions about preferences and unmet needs with regard to pregnancy prevention. Longitudinal retrospective study. Google Ads Keyword Planner was used to identify contraception-related keywords and their search volume in Germany and all federal states between 2018 and 2021. The keywords were categorized based on gender, hormonal/non-hormonal, and different contraceptive methods. Search volume and categories were analyzed for temporal trends, regional differences, and underlying socioeconomic variables. The 1481 contraception-related keywords corresponded to 15,081,760 searches. In total, a 56% increase in searches/100,000 inhabitants was observed. Highest mean search volume was observed in categories "woman," "woman/non-hormonal" and "woman/non-hormonal/barrier," respectively, and in the federal state Hamburg, while the lowest was seen in North Rhine-Westphalia. The increase in search volume reflects a high interest in contraception, particularly in non-hormonal female methods. This stands in contrast to the limited number of effective non-hormonal contraceptives available and points to an unmet need. In addition, the low search volume for male contraceptives demonstrates gender-specific responsibilities regarding family planning in German society.

Integration technologies in laboratory information systems: A systematic review

Clinical laboratories have evolved with technological advancements through integrating various subsystems into Health Information Systems (HIS), particularly the Laboratory Information System (LIS). The LIS automates processes, manages results, and interfaces with healthcare information sources. Challenges include workflow inefficiencies and data interpretation issues. Despite increased data accessibility, managing clinical data across systems remains complex. Integrating laboratory machines into LIS is essential for optimizing healthcare delivery, requiring effective integration technologies. This study aims to synthesize the existing empirical studies on the utilization of integration technologies for Software-to-Software (S2S) communication in automating clinical laboratory processes. This study systematically examined integration technologies in LIS using PubMed and following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The three-phase methodology included a scoping analysis, methodological analysis, and a gap analysis, focusing on S2S communication, interoperability frameworks, data standards, communication protocols, and challenges in LIS integration technologies. Analysis of 28 sample studies revealed a complex landscape in LIS integration shaped by end-users, care providers, and researchers. Clinical laboratories prioritize integration, focusing on patient data and sustainability. Standards like HL7 and FHIR ensure interoperability. Eleven methodologies highlight system development in Health Information Systems (HIS). Interoperability is a common objective, with 22 out of 28 studies achieving success. Challenges include limited generalizability, poor validation, and post-implementation modifications. Issues like security, data incompatibility, and evolving standards persist.

Ethical Concerns in Accessing Healthcare Information from Social Media by Patients with Terminal Diseases in Kenya: Opportunities and Challenges

Purpose: This paper investigated the ethical concerns in in accessing healthcare information from social media by patients with terminal diseases, opportunities and challenges: Kenyan experience.&#x0D; Methodology: It had 3 objectives to: a) determine ethical concerns in accessing healthcare information from social media; b) evaluate the opportunities patients with terminal diseases have in accessing healthcare information from the social media; c) investigate the challenges patients with terminal diseases have when accessing healthcare information from the social media. The study was desk review; that involved identifying and scanning relevant literature, analysis of the secondary data; creation a reference list and organization of the documents.&#x0D; Findings: The study findings were: all the articles 100% confirmed core ethical issues in accessing healthcare information: patients’ anonymity, confidentiality, privacy, physicians’ professionalism, and data protection; 98% agreed on imperative response by physicians to patient concerns. Social media presents opportunities to patients: 51% access, and shared (50%) healthcare information; 44% made decisions; 46% were empowered and their capacity build; 51% accessed experts advise; 48% joined social support-groups. There were challenges in accessing healthcare information: 50% accessing misinformation; 36% technological illiteracy, 48% personal data security.&#x0D; Unique Contribution to Theory Policy and Practice: The study concluded that social media presents enables accessing and sharing of healthcare information. However, for effectiveness ethical concerns like: patients’ confidentiality and privacy, physicians’ professionalism, and protection of patients’ data. Stakeholders need to work together to eliminate the ethical issues and challenges faced by patients using social media as a source of healthcare information.

Factors affecting practices of recently delivered women on maternal and neonatal health care in selected rural areas of Bangladesh

Bangladesh has made laudable progress in maternal and child health (MCH). Maternal and child mortalities have reduced substantially accompanied by stellar rise in immunization and contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR). However, such success is distributed unevenly throughout and the country is among one of the top ten countries with highest number of neonatal and under-five children mortalities. Rural Bangladesh is home to more than half of the country’s total population. Yet, disparity in access to healthcare services and information are overt in these areas. Utilization of maternal health services (MHS) is low whereas maternal and child mortalities are high in the rural areas. Thus, this cluster randomized cross sectional study was conducted with the aim to observe the practices that rural women followed in regards to maternal and child health and factors that affected these practices. Primary data was collected from 550 respondents using a structured questionnaire within the time period September—October 2019. All our participants were recently delivered women (RDW), defined in our study as women of reproductive age (15–49 years) who had delivered a child recently, i.e. 12 months prior (September 2018 – August 2019) the data collection. We conducted logistic regression and multivariate analysis to analyze data. Results from this study depict that while 96.3% of RDW opted for ANC visits and 99.1% fed colostrum to their newborn, fewer have had institutional deliveries and the number of RDW who had PNC was only 64.7%. Education was found to be the most prominent factor that affected practices employed by RDW. The more educated a respondent was, the greater the chance was of her engaging in appropriate maternal and child health practices. The RDW preferred and visited private facilities the most to obtain healthcare services with private medical doctors being one of the prime sources of healthcare information for the respondents. On the contrary, monthly expenditure exerted no statistically significant impact on the aforementioned practices. Thus, results of our study imply that interventions enhancing education and health knowledge of women and engaging private sector be designed for improving maternal and neonatal health care in rural areas of Bangladesh.

A comprehensive evaluation of ChatGPT consultation quality for augmentation mammoplasty: A comparative analysis between plastic surgeons and laypersons

ObjectivesChatGPT has gained significant popularity as a source of healthcare information among the general population. Evaluating the quality of chatbot responses is crucial, requiring comprehensive and qualitative analysis. This study aims to assess the answers provided by ChatGPT during hypothetical breast augmentation consultations across various categories and depths. The evaluation involves the utilization of validated tools and a comparison of scores between plastic surgeons and laypersons. MethodsA panel consisting of five plastic surgeons and five laypersons evaluated ChatGPT's responses to 25 questions spanning consultation, procedure, recovery, and sentiment categories. The DISCERN and PEMAT tools were employed to assess the responses, while emotional context was examined through ten specific questions. Additionally, readability was measured using the Flesch Reading Ease score. Qualitative analysis was performed to identify the overall strengths and weaknesses. ResultsPlastic surgeons generally scored lower than laypersons across most domains. Scores for each evaluation domain varied by category, with the consultation category demonstrating lower scores in terms of DISCERN reliability, information quality, and DISCERN score. Plastic surgeons assigned significantly lower overall quality ratings to the procedure category compared to other question categories. They also gave lower emotion scores in the procedure category compared to laypersons. The depth of the questions did not impact the scoring. ConclusionsExisting health information evaluation tools may not be entirely suitable for comprehensively evaluating the quality of individual responses generated by ChatGPT. Consequently, the development and implementation of appropriate evaluation tools to assess the appropriateness and quality of AI consultations are necessary.

The integration of standards and security protocols in these connections allows patient privacy, security and smooth adaptation to emerging healthcare information sources. GECA has demonstrated a remarkable level of accuracy and precision in its interactions with the diverse features, boasting an impressive 97% success rate in delivering accurate responses. Presently, preparations are underway for a pilot project at a Portuguese hospital that will conduct exhaustive testing and evaluate GECA, encompassing aspects such as its effectiveness, efficiency, quality, goal achievability, and user satisfaction.

The Quality of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Videos on YouTube.

Objective YouTube (YouTube LLC,San Bruno, California, United States), one of the most accessed sites on the internet, has become a widespread source of healthcare information for patients. Videos about coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) have accrued tens of millions of views on the platform, yet their educational quality is unknown. This study investigates the educational landscape of videos regarding CABG procedures on YouTube. Methods YouTube was queried for "CoronaryArteryBypass Graft Surgery" and "CoronaryArteryBypass Graft Procedure". After applying exclusion criteria, 73 videos were assessed. Two independent reviewers rated the material with the Global Quality Scale (GQS) (5 = high quality, 0 = low quality) to judge educational value. A ratio of view count to days since upload was applied to assess video popularity. Source, modality, and date of upload were recorded for each video as well. Results An average GQS score of 2.94 was found, indicating poor educational quality of the 73 YouTube videos on CABG procedures. Videos uploaded by physicians (56/73; 76.7%) had a significantly higher average GQS score than those uploaded by non-physicians (p<0.001). When content was grouped by delivery method, physician-led presentations (24/73 or 32.9%) produced the highest average GQS score of 3.35; conversely, patient-friendly delivery methods (18/73 or 24.7%) yielded the lowest average GQS score of 2.36 (p<0.001). Neither the view ratio nor the days since upload significantly correlated with the educational quality of the video. Conclusion Although CABG videos are readily available on YouTube, they often contain considerable biases and misleading information. With online sources for healthcare education now commonplace, physicians must be aware of the vast quantities of low-quality videos patients often encounter when weighing different treatment options. Further analysis of CABG videos on YouTube may allow physicians to ameliorate this gap by producing videos that are not only high quality but highly viewed on the platform.

Strategies for Working With Parents With Vaccination Hesitancy.

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of effective strategies for working with parents' vaccination hesitancy or refusal. An overview of historical and current trends in vaccination hesitancy and factors that contribute to and strategies for addressing vaccine hesitancy are discussed. This includes an emphasis on the critical role played by health care providers, as trusted advisors and a primary source of health care information, in encouraging vaccine acceptance. Legal and ethical implications are also considered. Vaccination hesitancy strategies are most effective if they are timely, multifaceted, and collaborative.

301 Youtube as a Source of Information for Skin Graft Procedures

Abstract Introduction YouTube, one of the most popular sites on the internet, has become a primary source of healthcare information for patients. Although YouTube videos about skin graft procedures have accrued millions of views, there lacks a publication defining their educational quality. With recent articles revealing the misleading nature of healthcare information on YouTube, this study aims to evaluate the quality of videos pertaining to skin graft procedures. Methods YouTube was searched for various terms such as “Skin Graft Procedures” and “Skin Graft Surgery” with content stratified by total view count. After applying exclusion criteria, the top 84 most viewed videos were assessed, 24 of which implicating burn injuries. Four independent reviewers rated the material with the Global Quality Scale (GQS; 5 = highest quality, 1 = lowest quality) to judge educational value based upon factors such as publisher credibility, delivery of accurate information, and presence of biases. Viewership, source, educational modality, and date of upload were also collected from each video and compiled for further analysis. Results The mean GQS score of all videos was 2.60. Videos uploaded by physicians (80.1%) had a significantly higher average GQS score than those not uploaded by physicians (p &amp;lt; 0.01). When grouped by modality, patient-friendly delivery methods (animations, news reports, etc.) contained the lowest quality information, while physician-led presentations provided the highest educational value (p &amp;lt; 0.01). Assessment of videos split into cohorts based on viewership noted a significantly higher GQS in videos with lower view counts (p &amp;lt; 0.05). There was no correlation between upload date and quality. Conclusions Overall, skin graft videos found on YouTube provide low quality information. This is especially true for the “popular” videos, where an inverse correlation was found between view count and GQS score. Likewise, patient-friendly videos received the lowest GQS scores amongst the cohorts. Alternatively, videos performed by physicians, most notably physician-led presentations, significantly improved the educational quality of videos pertaining to skin graft procedures. As such, further analysis of skin graft videos found on YouTube could poise physician involvement in producing videos of high educational quality while potentially bridging the gap spanning quality content and video popularity. Applicability of Research to Practice With online platforms such as YouTube evolving into conventional sources of healthcare information, physicians must act to improve the quality of online content to better guide patients in navigating treatment options and making healthcare decisions.

Role of Social Media Marketing in Changing Healthcare Perception: An Empirical study

Social media marketing is an effective way to change how people’s view on healthcare. More and more people are turning to social media platforms as a source of healthcare information, counsel, and suggestions as these platforms become more widely used. The use of social media marketing has made it possible for healthcare providers to produce and distribute interesting and useful material that appeals to their target market. Healthcare professionals have been able to spread the word about numerous illnesses and health conditions as well as preventive healthcare practice by using influencer marketing, social media campaigns, and targeted advertising. Social media has also made it easier for patients and healthcare professionals to communicate, which has improved patient - provider communication and management. Yet, as social media has grown in popularity, there have also been questions regarding the reliability and validity of the information provided on these sites. Healthcare professionals should therefore exercise caution when using social media and make sure that the information they share is trustworthy and supported by research.

1938. COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy among Adults Who Rely on Social Media for Health Care Information in Cameroon, Africa

Abstract Background In Africa, uptake of effective COVID-19 vaccines has been limited by accessibility and vaccine hesitancy (VH). VH is multifactorial but influences include disinformation through social media with Whats App being the most popular form in Cameroon. The aim of this study was to test our hypothesis that frequent users of social media would have higher vaccine hesitancy due to exposure to disinformation in Cameroon in Central Africa. Methods A survey study was conducted at urban and suburban hospital facilities in four of the ten regions of Cameroon. Participants were asked to self-report socio-demographics, perceptions of COVID-19 infection, and interest in vaccination. They were also asked to rank their top two sources of health care information, including social media. Bivariate analysis was used to explore the perceptions of infection and vaccination stratified by social media preference with statistical significance set at p&amp;lt; 0.05. Results We found that 18% (151/835) of participants cited social media (SM) as a top source of health care information. Health care professionals were cited by 82% as the most trusted source for health information (n=681). Fewer than one-third of survey participants were interested in receiving the COVID-19 vaccine (31%, 257/835) and rates did not differ by SM preferences. More people in the social media group, 53% vs 38% (p=0.046) stated that more information about vaccine safety may help reduce hesitancy. Perceived risks of COVID-19 vaccination ranged from death (33%) to fetal harm (31%) to supernatural reactions (1.4%). The SM group was not more likely to site perceived risks of the vaccine (p=0.244). Participant Characteristics. Conclusion Although vaccine hesitancy in Cameroon was high at the time of the survey, adults who prefer to get health information from social media were not more likely to express vaccine hesitancy. Public education campaigns led by healthcare professionals may have the greatest impact on vaccine acceptability based on trusted information sources cited by participants. YouTube videos provide low-quality educational content about rotator cuff disease.

BackgroundYouTube has become a popular source of healthcare information in orthopedic surgery. Although quality-based studies of YouTube content have been performed for information concerning many orthopedic pathologies, the quality and accuracy of information on the rotator cuff have yet to be evaluated. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the reliability and educational content of YouTube videos concerning the rotator cuff.MethodsYouTube was queried for the term “rotator cuff.” The first 50 videos from this search were evaluated. Video reliability was assessed using the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria (range, 0–5). Educational content was assessed using the global quality score (GQS; range, 0–4) and the rotator cuff-specific score (RCSS; range, 0–22). ResultsThe mean number of views was 317,500.7±538,585.3. The mean JAMA, GQS, and RCSS scores were 2.7±2.0, 3.7±1.0, and 5.6±3.6, respectively. Non-surgical intervention content was independently associated with a lower GQS (β=–2.19, p=0.019). Disease-specific video content (β=4.01, p=0.045) was the only independent predictor of RCSS.ConclusionsThe overall quality and educational content of YouTube videos concerned with the rotator cuff were low. Physicians should caution patients in using such videos as resources for decision-making and should counsel them appropriately.

A critical readability and quality analysis of internet-based patient information on neck dissections.

Patients are increasingly turning to the Internet as a source of healthcare information. Given that neck dissection is a common procedure within the field of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and readability of online patient education materials on neck dissection. A Google search was performed using the term "neck dissection." The first 10 pages of a Google search using the term "neck dissection" were analyzed. The DISCERN instrument was used to assess quality of information. Readability was calculated using the Flesch-Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning-Fog Index, Coleman-Liau Index, and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook Index. Thirty-one online patient education materials were included. Fifty-five percent (n = 17) of results originated from academic institutions or hospitals. The mean Flesch-Reading Ease score was 61.2 ± 11.9. Fifty-two percent (n = 16) of patient education materials had Flesch-Reading Ease scores above the recommended score of 65. The average reading grade level was 10.5 ± 2.1. The average total DISCERN score was 43.6 ± 10.1. Only 26% of patient education materials (PEMs) had DISCERN scores corresponding to a "good quality" rating. There was a significant positive correlation between DISCERN scores and both Flesch-Reading Ease scores and average reading grade level. The majority of patient education materials were written above the recommended sixth-grade reading level and the quality of online information pertaining to neck dissections was found to be suboptimal. This research highlights the need for patient education materials regarding neck dissection that are high quality and easily understandable by patients.

Inguinal hernia repair: a systematic analysis of online patient information using the Modified Ensuring Quality Information for Patients tool.

Online resources are a fundamental source of healthcare information due to the increasing popularity of the internet. Ensuring accuracy and reliability of websites is crucial to improving patient education and enhancing patient outcomes. Inguinal hernia repair is the most commonly performed general surgical procedure worldwide. This study analyses the quality of online patient information about inguinal hernia repair using the Modified Ensuring Quality Information for Patients (EQIP) tool. A systematic review of online information on inguinal hernia repair was conducted using four search terms: 'inguinal hernia', 'groin hernia', 'inguinal hernia repair' and 'inguinoscrotal hernia'. The top 100 websites for each term identified using Google were assessed using the modified EQIP tool (score 0-36). Websites for the paediatric population or intended for medical professional use were excluded from analysis. A total of 142 websites were eligible for analysis, 52.8% originating from the UK. The median EQIP score for all websites was 17/36 (interquartile range 14-21). The median EQIP scores for content, identification and structure were 8/18, 2/8 and 8/12, respectively. Complications of inguinal hernia repair were included in 46.5% of websites, with only 9.2% providing complication rates and 14.1% providing information on how complications are handled. This study highlights that the current quality of online patient information on inguinal hernia repair is poor, with minimal information available on complications, hindering patients' ability to make informed decisions regarding their healthcare. To improve patient education, there is an immediate need for improved quality online resources to meet international standards.

Dr. YouTube: A Snapshot of Credential Disclosure by Health Care Professionals.

YouTube is a popular source of health care information for consumers. The use of "Dr" or "Doctor" in a channel name is a way contributors establish expertise. The current study sought to understand the degree by which popular YouTube channels belonging to individuals who self-identify as doctors disclose their credentials and the nature of their disclosures. Two raters extracted descriptive characteristics from the most viewed public YouTube channel names meeting keyword search criteria of "Doctor" and "Dr". Channel-level disclosure was captured by examining a channel's "About" section. Video-level disclosure was captured by watching the first 2 minutes of the five most viewed videos from each channel. Forty-eight channels (45.7%; 48/105) disclosed degree, 60 channels (57.1%; 60/105) disclosed specialty, and 26 channels (24.8%; 26/105) disclosed the level of training. Two hundred thirty-six videos (46.6%; 236/506) disclosed degree, 201 videos (39.7%; 201/506) disclosed specialty, and 81 videos (16%; 81/506) disclosed the level of training. Our findings suggest that the most viewed YouTube health channels and videos demonstrate inconsistent credential disclosure, occurring less than half of the time. Current professional guidance from licensing boards on social media encourages transparency around expertise and credential sharing. In addition, it remains unclear what guidance other health care professionals receive about disclosure practices online. Future recommendations and training to health care professionals should include explicit language for transparent disclosure of credentials.

P-BN24 Quality assessment of online patient information on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy using the Modified Ensuring Quality Information for Patients (EQIP) tool

Abstract Background Online resources are rapidly becoming patients’ primary source of healthcare information due to the Internet’s ease of access. The availability of high-quality online information is paramount to improving patient education and clinical outcomes. Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy is the gold standard investigation for UGI symptoms, yet little is known regarding the quality of patient oriented websites. This study aims to analyse the quality of online patient information on UGI endoscopy using the modified Ensuring Quality Information for Patients (EQIP) tool. Methods A systematic review was conducted using 10 search terms. The top 100 websites for each term identified using Google search were assessed using the modified EQIP tool (score 0-36). Sub-analysis was performed on high-scoring websites. Websites for medical professional use or containing video and marketing content were excluded. Results 378 websites were eligible for analysis. The median modified EQIP score for UGI endoscopy was 18/36 (IQR 14-21). Median EQIP scores for the content, identification and structure domains were 8/18, 1/6 and 9/12, respectively. Websites produced by government health departments and NHS hospitals had a higher modified EQIP score (p = 0.007). Complication rates were included in only 20.4% of websites. High-scoring websites were significantly more likely to provide balanced information on risks and benefits (94.6% vs. 34.4%; p &amp;lt; 0.001). Conclusions The current quality of online patient information on UGI endoscopy is limited, with minimal information available on risks of the procedure, potentially hindering patients’ ability to make informed healthcare decisions. There is an immediate need for high-quality online resources to improve patient education.
