M11pz: A Nonlocal Meta Functional with Zero Hartree-Fock Exchange and with Broad Accuracy for Chemical Energies and Structures.

The accuracy of Kohn-Sham density functional theory depends strongly on the approximation to the exchange-correlation functional. In this work, we present a new exchange-correlation functional called M11pz (M11 plus rung-3.5 terms with zero Hartree-Fock exchange) that is built on the M11plus functional with the goal of using its rung-3.5 terms without a Hartree-Fock exchange term, especially to improve the accuracy for strongly correlated systems. The M11pz functional is optimized with the same local and rung-3.5 ingredients that are used in M11plus but without any percentage of Hartree-Fock exchange. The performance of M11pz is compared with eight local functionals, and M11pz is found to be in top three when the errors or ranks are averaged over eight grouped and partially overlapping databases: AME418/22, atomic and molecular energies; MGBE172, main-group bond energies; TMBE40, transition-metal bond energies; SR309, single-reference systems; MR54, multireference systems; BH192, barrier heights; NC579, noncovalent interaction energies; and MS20, molecular structures. For calculations of band gaps of solids, M11pz is the second best of the nine tested functionals that have zero Hartree-Fock exchange.

The role of anagostic interactions in the Pd−Superoxo formation in aerobic Pd catalysed C–C coupling reaction: What do DFT computations reveal?

Aerobic oxidative CC coupling catalyzed by dimethyl PdII center (L–[Pd]) bearing tetradentate pyridinophane (N4) ligand L (L = N,N-dimethyl-2,11-diaza[3.3]-(2,6)pyridinophane) has been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) computations. In Pd-catalyzed aerobic oxidation processes, the interaction of dioxygen with PdII center is a crucial step. Computations reveal that the reactant dimethyl PdII complex L–[Pd] has anagostic interactions (4 × Pd···H ∼ 2.60 Å) in total agreement with reported experimental NMR downshift values and these interactions play a significant role in the formation of PdIII–Superoxo intermediate which is less probed. While oxygen approaches the reactant, PdII center becomes PdIII allowing axial amine coordination. This pushes two protons (Csp3–H) away from Pd center weakening the two anagostic interactions. The other two anagostic interactions are intact at long ranges and at closer distances they weaken facilitating Pd–O bonding. The formation of the PdIII center in the PdIII–Superoxo were confirmed by reported EPR measurements. To understand this process, this key step has been modelled. Calculations have been performed with fourteen different density functionals (M06L, B3LYP, PBE0, M06, M11 to name a few) and different basis sets both in gas phase and in solvent medium. It is found that the range separated functionals, particularly M11 functional describe the process accurately and this is attributed to their efficiency of handling electron correlation at different ranges by including different percentage of Hartree-Fock exchange. The role of anagostic interactions M⋯H (M = Ni, Pd and Pt) in metal–superoxo species bearing symmetric and asymmetric substituted N4 ligands have been investigated. These results clearly explain asymmetrically substituted N4 ligands assist the simultaneous creation of M–O bonds at medium ranges and the weakening of bis anagostic (repulsive) M∙∙∙H interactions at short ranges. These findings suggest that intermediate stabilization in CC coupling processes mediated by transition-metal catalysts containing N4 ligands depends critically on the strength of anagostic interactions.

Structures of the neutral and positively charged forms of the 4,4′,4″-tris(N,N-phenyl-3-methylphenylamino)triphenylamine (m-MTDATA) molecule and its dimer, and charge localization in the corresponding cationic species

The structures of the 4,4',4″-tris(N,N-phenyl-3-methylphenylamino)triphenylamine (m-MTDATA) molecule and its dimer in their neutral and positively charged forms were studied by performing quantum-chemical calculations at the Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT) levels of theory using several exchange-correlation functionals (PBE, PBE0, BHANDHLYP, and M06-HF) with different percentages of HF exchange. It was found that there are at least four possible isomeric structures of m-MTDATA with different (planar or perpendicular) arrangements of the peripheral diphenylamino groups. The charge localization in the monomeric and dimeric cationic species was also determined. The results indicated that the charge on the dimeric cation is localized on the central region or on the side fragment of the cationic part of the dimer, depending on the dimer structure. DFT calculations showed a tendency to overestimate the charge delocalization over the molecule, irrespective of the percentage of HF exchange applied. Comparing the performance of TD-DFT and SAC-CI methods in the description of excited states potential energy surfaces: An excited state proton transfer reaction as case study.

The performances, in the description of excited state potential energy surfaces, of several density functional approximations representative of the currently most applied exchange correlation functionals' families have been tested with respect to post Hartree-Fock references (here Symmetry Adapted Cluster-Configuration Interaction results). An experimentally well-characterized intermolecular proton transfer reaction has been considered as test case. The computed potential energy profiles were analyzed both in the gas phase and in toluene solution, here represented as a polarizable continuum model. The presence of intermolecular (dark) and intramolecular (bright) charge transfer excited states, whose polarity strongly differs along the reaction pathway, makes clear that only subtle compensation between spurious electronic effects-related to the incorrect asymptotic behavior of the functional-and solvent stabilization of polar states leads to the overall correct description of this excited state reaction when using global hybrids with low percentage of Hartree Fock exchange. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Ab Initio Calculation of the Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-vis) Absorption Spectrum, Electron-Loss Function, and Reflectivity of Solids.

The field frequency has recently been taken into account in the coupled-perturbed Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham method implemented in the CRYSTAL code for calculating the high-frequency dielectric constant of semiconductors up to the first electronic transitions. In this work, we document how the code has been generalized and improved in order to compute the full ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectrum, the electron loss function, and the reflectivity from the real and imaginary parts of the electric response property. We show how spectra are modified when the crystalline orbital relaxation due to the dynamic electric field is taken into account, and how this modification increases with the percentage of Hartree-Fock exchange in the unperturbed hybrid Hamiltonian.

On the TD-DFT Accuracy in Determining Single and Double Bonds in Excited-State Structures of Organic Molecules

We present an analysis on the behavior of the TD-DFT approach in the determination of excited-state structures with particular attention to single and double bonds. The analysis is based on a direct comparison with the highly correlated CASPT2 ab initio approach. Six DFT exchange-correlation functionals differing in the Hartree-Fock exchange percentage and the type of correlation functional are considered and applied to the study of seven prototype organic molecules characterized by two families of excitations (acrolein, acetone, diazomethane, and propanoic acid anion for n-π* and cis-1,3-butadiene, trans-1,3-butadiene, and pyrrole for π-π*), and three protonated Schiff bases, used as model chromophores for 11-cis retinal. Our analysis allows pinpointing specific correlations between accuracy of the various functionals and category of excitation and/or type of chemical bond involved in the corresponding geometry relaxation. We confirm the role of the long-range correction of the potential to obtain a balanced description of excitation energies and excited-state structures, but we also point out that, for a small system, B3LYP and PBE0 also give results close to CASPT2.

Modeling CO and N2Adsorption at Cr Surface Species of Phillips Catalyst by Hybrid Density Functionals: Effect of Hartree−Fock Exchange Percentage

In this article, we present a computational study of the structure and vibrational properties of the species formed by the interaction between Cr sites of Phillips catalyst and probe molecules (CO, N(2)). The vibrational properties of these surface species, intensively investigated in the past, form a very rich and ideal set of experimental data to test computational approaches. By adopting the X(4)Si(2)O(3)Cr (X = H, OH, F) cluster as a simplified model of the ([triple bond]SiO)(2)Cr(II) species present at the surface of the real catalyst, we found that the B3LYP hybrid functional (containing 20% of Hartree-Fock exchange), when applied to this model, is unable to reproduce with reasonable accuracy the currently available experimental data (principally coming from IR spectroscopy). Better agreement is obtained when the percentage of Hartree-Fock exchange is increased (up to 35-40%).

Density Functional Theory in Transition-Metal Chemistry: Relative Energies of Low-Lying States of Iron Compounds and the Effect of Spatial Symmetry Breaking.

The ground and lower excited states of Fe2, Fe2(-), and FeO(+) were studied using a number of density functional theory (DFT) methods. Specific attention was paid to the relative state energies, the internuclear distances (re), and the harmonic vibrational frequencies (ωe). A number of factors influencing the calculated values of these properties were examined. These include basis sets, the nature of the density functional chosen, the percentage of Hartree-Fock exchange in the density functional, and constraints on orbital symmetry. A number of different types of generalized gradient approximation (GGA) density functionals (straight GGA, hybrid GGA, meta-GGA, and hybrid meta-GGA) were examined, and it was found that the best results were obtained with hybrid GGA or hybrid meta-GGA functionals that contain nonzero fractions of HF exchange; specifically, the best overall results were obtained with B3LYP, M05, and M06, closely followed by B1LYP. One significant observation was the effect of enforcing symmetry on the orbitals. When a degenerate orbital (π or δ) is partially occupied in the (4)Φ excited state of FeO(+), reducing the enforced symmetry (from C6v to C4v to C2v) results in a lower energy since these degenerate orbitals are split in the lower symmetries. The results obtained were compared to higher level ab initio results from the literature and to recent PBE+U plane wave results by Kulik et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2006, 97, 103001). It was found that some of the improvements that were afforded by the semiempirical +U correction can also be accomplished by improving the form of the DFT functional and, in one case, by not enforcing high symmetry on the orbitals.

Tayloring standard TDDFT approaches for computing UV/Vis transitions in thiocarbonyl chromophores

AbstractWe report the development of an accurate computational procedure for the calculation of the n → π* (λmax−1) and π → π* (λmax−2) transitions of a set of thiocarbonyl derivatives. To ensure converged results, all calculations are carried out using the 6‐311+G(2df,p) basis set for time‐dependent calculations, and the 6‐311G(2df,p) for the ground‐state geometrical optimization. Starting with two hybrids, PBE0 and B3LYP, the Hartree–Fock exchange percentage (α) used is optimized in order to reach excitation energies that fit experimental data. It turns out that BLYP(α) is the more adequate functional for calibration. For the n → π* excitation, the optimal α value lies in the 0.10–0.20 interval, whereas for the π → π* process setting α equal to 0.10 provides the most accurate results. The corresponding mean absolute errors (MAE) are limited to 17 nm for λmax−1, and to 10 nm for λmax−2, allowing a consistent and accurate prediction of both transitions. We also assess the merits of the ZINDO//AM1 scheme and it turns out that the semi‐empirical method only provides a poor prediction of the λmax of thiocarbonyl derivatives, especially for the n → π* transition. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
