Potential of halotolerant PGPRs in growth and yield augmentation of Triticum aestivum var. HD2687 and Zea mays var. PSCL4642 cultivars under saline conditions.

This study aimed to culture and screen salt-tolerant Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) from Bougainvillea glabra rhizosphere to improve wheat HD-2687 and maize PSCL-4642 cultivars under saline conditions up to the seedling stage. Twenty-four rhizobacterial isolates were screened for salt tolerance at different NaCl levels. Indole acetic acid (IAA) production, phosphate solubilization, and siderophore and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) production of salinity-tolerant isolates were tested. Positive salt-tolerant PGPRs were further subjected to seedling studies to examine the improvement in the development of experimental crops under 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM NaCl concentrations with/without bacterial inoculant. Of the 24 isolates, BoGl123 was the most promising PGPR, which showed the maximum phosphate solubilization, and IAA, siderophore and HCN production. It was further subjected to seedling studies. In comparison with controls, BoGl123 resulted in a higher radicle length in maize (34 mm, 87.4%) and wheat (26.8 mm, 85.8%) at the 50 mM salinity level. At the 100 mM NaCl level, the radicle length of wheat and maize seedlings was increased by 82.5% and 78.6%, respectively, compared with controls. At different NaCl concentrations, BoGl123 improved the plumule length of seedlings in both crops. The stress tolerance attributes and plant growth promotion (PGP) indicate the potential of Pseudomonas fluorescens BoGl123 to be used as a microbial inoculant in the cultivation of wheat and maize under stressful conditions.

Mining the rhizosphere of halophytic rangeland plants for halotolerant bacteria to improve growth and yield of salinity-stressed wheat

In this study, the effects of three halotolerant rhizobacterial isolates AL, HR, and SB, which are able to grow at a salinity level of 1600 mM NaCl, with multiple plant growth promoting (PGP) traits on some seed and forage quality attributes, and vegetative, reproductive, biochemical and physiological characteristics of wheat plant irrigated with saline water (0, 40, 80, and 160 mM NaCl) were investigated. The ability of halotolerant bacterial isolates to produce PGP traits was affected by salinity levels, depending upon the bacterial isolates. Salinity stress significantly affected the yield, quality, and growth of wheat by modifying the morpho-physiological and biochemical traits of the exposed plants. However, all three bacterial isolates, especially isolate AL, significantly improved the biochemical (an increase in K+/Na+ ratio by 55%, plant P content by 50%, and plant Ca content by 31%), morphological (an increase in stem dry weight by 52%, root dry weight by 44%, spike dry weight by 34%, and grain dry weight by 43%), and physiological (an increase in leaf proline content by 50% and total phenol in leaf by 42%) attributes of wheat and aided the plant to tolerate salinity stress in contrast to un-inoculated plant. Plants inoculated with bacterial isolates showed significantly improved seed amylose by 36%, leaf crude protein by 30%, leaf metabolic energy by 37%, and leaf water-soluble sugar content by 34%. Among the measured PGP and plant attributes, bacterial auxin and plant K content were of key importance in increasing reproductive performance of wheat. The bacterial isolates AL, HR, and SB were identified as Bacillus safensis, B. pumilus, and Zhihengliuella halotolerans, respectively, based on 16 S rDNA sequence. The study reveals that application of halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria isolated from halophytic rangeland plants can be a cost effective and ecological sustainable method to improve wheat productivity, especially the attributes related to seed and forage quality, under salinity stress conditions.

Mitigation of NaCl Stress in Wheat by Rhizosphere Engineering Using Salt Habitat Adapted PGPR Halotolerant Bacteria

There is a great interest in mitigating soil salinity that limits plant growth and productivity. In this study, eighty-nine strains were isolated from the rhizosphere and endosphere of two halophyte species (Suaeda mollis and Salsola tetrandra) collected from three chotts in Algeria. They were screened for diverse plant growth-promoting traits, antifungal activity and tolerance to different physico-chemical conditions (pH, PEG, and NaCl) to evaluate their efficiency in mitigating salt stress and enhancing the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana and durum wheat under NaCl–stress conditions. Three bacterial strains BR5, OR15, and RB13 were finally selected and identified as Bacillus atropheus. The Bacterial strains (separately and combined) were then used for inoculating Arabidopsis thaliana and durum wheat during the seed germination stage under NaCl stress conditions. Results indicated that inoculation of both plant spp. with the bacterial strains separately or combined considerably improved the growth parameters. Three soils with different salinity levels (S1 = 0.48, S2 = 3.81, and S3 = 2.80 mS/cm) were used to investigate the effects of selected strains (BR5, OR15, and RB13; separately and combined) on several growth parameters of wheat plants. The inoculation (notably the multi-strain consortium) proved a better approach to increase the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents as compared to control plants. However, proline content, lipid peroxidation, and activities of antioxidant enzymes decreased after inoculation with the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that can attenuate the adverse effects of salt stress by reducing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. These results indicated that under saline soil conditions, halotolerant PGPR strains are promising candidates as biofertilizers under salt stress conditions.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria: Potential improvement in antioxidant defense system and suppression of oxidative stress for alleviating salinity stress in Triticum aestivum (L.) plants

Abstract Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) can suppress salt stress effects and improve plant productivity. This study elucidated the mechanisms of growth medium-inoculated PGPRs (Bacillus cereus, Serratia marcescens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), which contribute to improving salinity tolerance in Triticum aestivum plants grown under two NaCl-salinity levels (150 and 300 mM). The objective was to assess the impacts of soil-inoculated PGPRs on physiological attributes, antioxidant system activities, and their implications for growth and productivity of wheat plants in a pot study. Salinity levels markedly decreased growth and output traits, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange, membrane stability, plant water content, K+ and Ca2+ contents, and K+/Na+ ratio. While, proline and soluble sugars contents, Na+ and oxidative stress biomarkers (e.g., O2•− and H2O2), and antioxidant activities were increased by salinity compared to control. The adverse effects were more pronounced with 300 mM NaCl. However, PGPRs detoxified salinity stress effects and significantly improved all physiological attributes and further elevated antioxidant activities, while significantly reduced levels of Na+ and oxidative stress biomarkers, which were reflected in significant elevations in plant growth and production. These improvements using PGPRs were better under 150 mM NaCl. The growth-enhancing traits of these halo-tolerant PGPRs like indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) productions, N2-fixation, and P solubilization, reported in this investigation not only helped wheat plants withstand salt stress but also facilitated their growth under varying concentrations of salts. Thus, the use of PGPRs can be an effective strategy to boost wheat growth and production in salt-affected areas.

Secondary Metabolites From Halotolerant Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria for Ameliorating Salinity Stress in Plants.

Soil salinization has emerged as one of the prime environmental constraints endangering soil quality and agricultural productivity. Anthropogenic activities coupled with rapid pace of climate change are the key drivers of soil salinity resulting in degradation of agricultural lands. Increasing levels of salt not only impair structure of soil and its microbial activity but also restrict plant growth by causing harmful imbalance and metabolic disorders. Potential of secondary metabolites synthesized by halotolerant plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (HT-PGPR) in the management of salinity stress in crops is gaining importance. A wide array of secondary metabolites such as osmoprotectants/compatible solutes, exopolysaccharides (EPS) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from HT-PGPR have been reported to play crucial roles in ameliorating salinity stress in plants and their symbiotic partners. In addition, HT-PGPR and their metabolites also help in prompt buffering of the salt stress and act as biological engineers enhancing the quality and productivity of saline soils. The review documents prominent secondary metabolites from HT-PGPR and their role in modulating responses of plants to salinity stress. The review also highlights the mechanisms involved in the production of secondary metabolites by HT-PGPR in saline conditions. Utilizing the HT-PGPR and their secondary metabolites for the development of novel bioinoculants for the management of saline agro-ecosystems can be an important strategy in the future.

Biofilm forming rhizobacteria enhance growth and salt tolerance in sunflower plants by stimulating antioxidant enzymes activity

Salinity stress is one of the major environmental stresses that impose global socio-economic impacts, as well as hindering crop productivity. Halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) having potential to cope with salinity stress can be employed to counter this issue in eco-friendly way. In the present investigation, halotolerant PGPR strains, AP6 and PB5, were isolated from saline soil and characterized for their biochemical, molecular and physiological traits. Sequencing of 16 S rRNA gene and comparative analysis confirmed the taxonomic affiliation of AP6 with Bacillus licheniformis and PB5 with Pseudomonas plecoglossicida. The study was carried out in pots with different levels of induced soil salinity viz. 0, 5, 10 and 15 dSm−1 to evaluate the potential of bacterial inoculants in counteracting salinity stress in sunflower at different plant growth stages (30, 45 and 60 days after sowing). Both the bacterial inoculants were capable of producing indole acetic acid and biofilm, solubilizing inorganic rock phosphate, and also expressed ACC deaminase activity. The PGPR inoculated plants showed significantly higher fresh and dry biomass, plant height, root length and yield plant−1. Ameliorative significance of applied bacterial inoculants was also evidenced by mitigating oxidative stress through upregulation of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) antioxidant enzymes. Increase in photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange activities and nutrient uptake are crucial salt stress adaptations, which were enhanced with the inoculation of salt tolerant biofilm producing PGPR in sunflower plants. Although increase in salinity stress levels has gradually decreased the plant's output compared to non-salinized plants, the plants inoculated with PGPR confronted salinity stress in much better way than uninoculated plants. Owing to the wide action spectrum of these bacterial inoculants, it was concluded that these biofilm PGPR could serve as effective bioinoculants and salinity stress alleviator for sunflower (oil seed crop) by increasing crop productivity in marginalized agricultural systems.

Autochthonous halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria promote bacoside A yield of Bacopa monnieri (L.) Nash and phytoextraction of salt-affected soil

Phytoremediation is a promising approach for reclamation of salt-affected soil. Phytoextraction is the most commonly used process, which exploits plants to absorb, immobilize, and accumulate salt in their shoots. In this study, halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) were isolated from the rhizosphere of wild grasses growing naturally in salt-affected areas of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (India) and were tested for their efficacies of salt-tolerance and plant growth-promoting (PGP) abilities. Based on 16S rRNA sequences, the most efficient halotolerant isolates possessing PGP traits were identified as Pseudomonas plecoglossicida (KM233646), Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (KM233647), Bacillus flexus (KM233648), and Bacillus safensis (KM233652). Application of these isolates as bio-inoculants significantly (P < 0.05) increased the growth and bacoside A yield of a medicinal plant, Bacopa monnieri (L.) Nash, grown on natural salt-affected soil. The phytoremediation of salt-affected soil was evident by the substantial increase in shoot Na+:K+ ratio of bio-inoculant-treated plants. When compared to un-inoculated control plants, the soil physico-chemical properties of bio-inoculant-treated plants were improved. The shoot and root biomass (fresh and dry weights), soil enzymes, and soil nutrient parameters showed significant positive correlations with the shoot Na+:K+ ratio. Consequently, the halotolerant PGPR screened in this study could be useful for the reclamation of saline soils concomitant with improved plant growth and bacoside A yield.

Rhizobacteria Isolated from Saline Soil Induce Systemic Tolerance in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) against Salinity Stress

Halo-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have the inherent potential to cope up with salinity. Thus, they can be used as an effective strategy in enhancing the productivity of saline agro-systems. In this study, a total of 50 isolates were screened from the rhizospheric soil of plants growing in the salt range of Pakistan. Out of these, four isolates were selected based on their salinity tolerance and plant growth promotion characters. These isolates (SR1. SR2, SR3, and SR4) were identified as Bacillus sp. (KF719179), Azospirillum brasilense (KJ194586), Azospirillum lipoferum (KJ434039), and Pseudomonas stutzeri (KJ685889) by 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis. In vitro, these strains, in alone and in a consortium, showed better production of compatible solute and phytohormones, including indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), cytokinin (CK), and abscisic acid (ABA), in culture conditions under salt stress. When tested for inoculation, the consortium of all four strains showed the best results in terms of improved plant biomass and relative water content. Consortium-inoculated wheat plants showed tolerance by reduced electrolyte leakage and increased production of chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll, and osmolytes, including soluble sugar, proline, amino acids, and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase), upon exposure to salinity stress (150 mM NaCl). In conclusion, plant growth-promoting bacteria, isolated from salt-affected regions, have strong potential to mitigate the deleterious effects of salt stress in wheat crop, when inoculated. Therefore, this consortium can be used as potent inoculants for wheat crop under prevailing stress conditions.

Silencing of Phytopathogen Communication by the Halotolerant PGPR Staphylococcus equorum Strain EN21.

Increasing world food demand together with soil erosion and indiscriminate use of chemical fertilization highlight the need to adopt sustainable crop production strategies. In this context, a combination of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and pathogen management represents a sustainable and efficient alternative. Though little studied, halophilic and halotolerant PGPR could be a beneficial plant growth promotion strategy for saline and non-saline soils. The virulence of many bacterial phytopathogens is regulated by quorum sensing (QS) systems. Quorum quenching (QQ) involves the enzymatic degradation of phytopathogen-generated signal molecules, mainly N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs). In this study, we investigate plant growth-promoting (PGP) activity and the capacity of the halotolerant bacterium Staphylococcus equorum strain EN21 to attenuate phytopathogens virulence through QQ. We used biopriming and in vivo tomato plant experiments to analyse the PGP activity of strain EN21. AHL inactivation was observed to reduce Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato infections in tomato and Arabidopsis plants. Our study of Dickeya solani, Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum and Erwinia amylovora bacteria in potato tubers, carrots and pears, respectively, also demonstrated the effectiveness of QS interruption by EN21. Overall, this study highlights the potential of strain S. equorum EN21 in plant growth promotion and QQ-driven bacterial phytopathogen biocontrol.

Isolation and Characterization of Halotolerant Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria From Durum Wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) Cultivated in Saline Areas of the Dead Sea Region.

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are beneficial microorganisms that can be utilized to improve plant responses against biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, 74 halotolerant bacterial isolates were isolated from rhizosphere and endorhizosphere of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) plants cultivated in saline environments in the Ghor region near the east of the Dead Sea. 16S rDNA partial sequences and phylogenetic analysis of 62 isolates showed clear clustering of the isolates into three phyla: Firmicutes (61.3%), Proteobacteria (29.0%), and Actinobacteria (9.7%). At the genus level, the majority of them were grouped within the Bacillus, Oceanobacillus, and Halomonas genera. The isolates, which possessed plant growth promoting traits including nitrogen fixation, ACC deaminase activity, auxin production, inorganic phosphate solubilization and siderophore production, were selected. The effect of the inoculation of selected PGPR strains on growth of salt sensitive and salt tolerant durum wheat genotypes under high salt stress conditions was evaluated. Six halotolerant PGPR strains were able to improve survival in inoculated plants under high salinity stress conditions as reflected in higher germination percentages and seedling root growth when compared with non-inoculated plants. Furthermore, three halotolerant PGPR strains were able to improve durum wheat tolerance to water deficit stress. In addition, antagonistic effect in four halotolerant PGPR strains against an aggressive pathogenic isolate of Fusarium culmorum that causes crown rot disease was observed in a dual culture assay. In conclusion, the halotolerant PGPR strains described in this study might have great potential to improve durum wheat productivity under different stress conditions.

An overview on improvement of crop productivity in saline soils by halotolerant and halophilic PGPRs.

Salinity of water and soil are of the most important factors limiting the production of crops. Moreover, with the increasing population of the planet and saline fields worldwide there is no choice but to use saline soil and water in the near future. Therefore, to increase plant growth under saline stress condition, provision of sustainable and environmentally friendly management for the use of saline water and soil resources is necessary. The development of saline resistant plants is a potent approach to solve this problem. Generally, soil salinity negatively affects the plant growth through ion toxicity, oxidative stress, osmotic stress and ethylene generation. In recent years, scientists through genetic engineering techniques, which are based on molecular and physiological characteristics of plants, have made salt tolerance plants. However, the validation of the present technique is restricted to laboratory condition and it is not easily applied in the agronomy research under field environment. Another option would be to isolate and utilize salinity resistant microorganisms from the rhizosphere of halophyte plants, namely plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The mechanisms of these bacteria includes; ACC-deaminase and exopolysachared production, osmolite accumulation, antioxidant system activation, ion hemostasis and etc. In this review, we will discuss mechanisms of PGPR in producing tolerate plants under salt stress and how to improve the plant-microbe interactions in future for increasing agricultural productivity to feed all of the world's people.

Halotolerant PGPR: A hope for cultivation of saline soils

Salt stress is one of the rapidly growing environmental stresses all over the world. Globally, 22% of the total cultivated and 33% of the total irrigated agricultural area is subjected to salt stress, which is increasing rapidly by an average of 10% per year. Due to this reason, 50% of cultivatable area will be salt-affected in coming years. On the other hand, demand for food is increasing with the rise in population. Salts have detrimental effects on plants such as damage to photosynthetic machinery, growth retardation and ultimately yield loss. However, the rhizosphere of plants harbors a diverse community of microbes known as halo-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), which have the potential to cope with salinity problem. These PGPR assist plants to withstand the increased concentration of salts by the production of different organic and inorganic compounds such as Indole Acetic Acid (IAA), ethylene, 1-Amino Cyclopropane-1-Carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, volatile organic compounds (VOC), antioxidants etc.. The present review demonstrates the mechanisms of halo-tolerant PGPR that help plants to survive under saline conditions. We also highlighted some of the bacterial strains, which are successfully used in different forms on agriculturally important crops in salt affected soils. These halo-tolerant PGPR have the potential to work as defensive agents of plants by enhancing growth, productivity, tolerance and defense system under saline environments.

Halotolerant plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria modulate gene expression and osmolyte production to improve salinity tolerance and growth in Capsicum annum L.

Some rhizobacteria have demonstrated a noteworthy role in regulation of plant growth and biomass production under biotic and abiotic stresses. The present study was intended to explicate the ameliorative consequences of halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (HPGPR) on growth of capsicum plants subjected to salt stress. Salt stress was ascertained by supplementing 1 and 2g NaCl kg-1 soil. The HPGPR positively invigorated growth attributes, chlorophyll, protein contents, and water use efficiency (WUE) of supplemented capsicum plants under salinity stress conditions. Bacillus fortis strain SSB21 caused highest significant increase in shoot length, root length, and fresh and dry biomass production of capsicum plants grown under saline conditions. This multi-trait bacterium also increased biosynthesis of proline and up-regulated the expression profiles of stress related genes including CAPIP2, CaKR1, CaOSM1, and CAChi2. On the other hand, B. fortis strain SSB21 inoculated plants exhibited reduced level of ethylene, lipid peroxidation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). All these together contribute to activate physiological and biochemical processes involved in the mitigation of the salinity induced stress in capsicum plants.

Mining Halophytes for Plant Growth-Promoting Halotolerant Bacteria to Enhance the Salinity Tolerance of Non-halophytic Crops.

Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic stresses limiting crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Interest is increasing in the application of PGPRs (plant growth promoting rhizobacteria) to ameliorate stresses such as salinity stress in crop production. The identification of salt-tolerant, or halophilic, PGPRs has the potential to promote saline soil-based agriculture. Halophytes are a useful reservoir of halotolerant bacteria with plant growth-promoting capabilities. Here, we review recent studies on the use of halophilic PGPRs to stimulate plant growth and increase the tolerance of non-halophytic crops to salinity. These studies illustrate that halophilic PGPRs from the rhizosphere of halophytic species can be effective bio-inoculants for promoting the production of non-halophytic species in saline soils. These studies support the viability of bioinoculation with halophilic PGPRs as a strategy for the sustainable enhancement of non-halophytic crop growth. The potential of this strategy is discussed within the context of ensuring sustainable food production for a world with an increasing population and continuing climate change. We also explore future research needs for using halotolerant PGPRs under salinity stress.

Imperative roles of halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and kinetin in improving salt tolerance and growth of black gram (Phaseolus mungo).

The salinity stress causes a major threat for plant growth, yield, and biomass production. The present study was designed to assess the effect of exogenously applied kinetin and halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (H-PGPR) on alleviation of salt stress in black gram (Phaseolus mungo). A total of 15 rhizobacterial isolates obtained from a salt-affected area were analyzed for their capability to improve growth of P. mungo plants growing in greenhouse conditions. Out of the tested rhizobacteria, the two bacterial isolates which exhibited maximum growth potential were screened and their growth-promoting attributes were evaluated. The role of screened H-PGPR and/or kinetin (8 and 10μM) was evaluated in P. mungo plants irrigated with three levels of brackish water (S1 = 3, S2 = 5, and S3 = 7 dSm-1) under field condition. Salt stress reduced transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, salt tolerance index, growth, leaf area, photosynthetic pigments, leaf relative water content (LRWC), biomass production, and seed yield in subjected plants. Conversely, the salinized plants treated with kinetin and/or H-PGPR exhibited improved levels of chlorophyll contents, LRWC, root growth, shoot growth, biomass production, and seed yield. The H-PGPR and/or kinetin supplementation also reduced electrolyte leakage in salt-stressed plants. Overall, the present findings will be of great value to recognize the mechanism of salt stress alleviation in P. mungo plants under the influence of H-PGPR and/or kinetin.

Enhanced tolerance to salt stress in canola (Brassica napus L.) seedlings inoculated with the halotolerant Enterobacter cloacae HSNJ4

Using halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to alleviate damages caused by salt stress is an effective method in agriculture. In the present study, an Enterobacter cloacae strain (HSNJ4) that was isolated from the rhizosphere of saline soil was found to be the most effective for promoting canola seed germination among eight halotolerant bacteria tested. Then, the effects of HSNJ4 inoculation on the growth and physiological responses of canola seedlings were investigated under three different levels of salt stress in a pot experiment. The root length, shoot length, amount of lateral roots, and chlorophyll content in HSNJ4-inoculated canola seedlings increased significantly under salt stress. Physiological analysis showed that malondialdehyde content was decreased, whereas proline content and antioxidant enzyme activity were increased by HSNJ4 inoculation at NaCl concentrations of 50 and 100mM. Moreover, HSNJ4 inoculation effectively increased endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content and reduced ethylene emission under simulated salt stress conditions. Cultures of HSNJ4 demonstrated that under conditions of salt stress, HSNJ4 could indeed produce both IAA and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase. Hence, it is plausible that HSNJ4 balances the relative content of IAA and ethylene in canola seedlings to enhance their salt tolerance.

This study was aimed to investigate the effect of inoculation on three salt-tolerant, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) STR2 (Bacilluspumilus), STR8 (Halomonas desiderata) and STR36 (Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans), for their growth-promoting potential and efficacy in augmenting salt tolerance in Mentha arvensis, an essential oil-bearing crop and natural source of l-menthol, under varying levels of NaCl stress (0, 100, 300 and 500 mM) imposed through irrigating water. Increase in the levels of salt concentration led to a decrease in the growth, fresh weight, leaf–stem ratio, oil content and yield. However, the negative effects of salinity were observed to be convalesced in the PGPR inoculated plants. At salinity levels of 100 and 300 mM NaCl, H. desiderata inoculated plants recorded the highest herb yield, whereas at 500 mM NaCl, the plants inoculated with E. oxidotolerans yielded maximum herb. The oil content in non-inoculated, salt-stressed plants was observed to be 0.46, 0.42 and 0.35 % at 100, 300 and 500 mM NaCl, respectively, whereas the plants inoculated with H. desiderata recorded the oil content of 0.71 and 0.60 and 0.48 % at similar levels of NaCl stress, respectively. The halotolerant PGPR minimized the deleterious effects of salt toxicity producing at par or higher yields at lower and medium salinity levels (100, 300 mM NaCl) than the un-inoculated non-salt-stressed plants through improved foliar nutrient uptake and enhanced antioxidant machinery. Based on the results of the experiments reported herein, the use of salt-tolerant, plant-growth-promoting bacteria may provide an effective means of facilitating M. arvensis growth in salt-stressed environments.
