This article takes a critical look at the second edition of the grids handbook. Schemes like GRIDS offer guidelines in school review and school evaluation. The first half of the article looks at the background to the GRIDS scheme and aims to identify areas of theoretical and practical difficulty within them. It also asks what the role of such schemes is in the current educational system. The second half looks at one example where schools, a college and an LEA ran a collaborative GRIDS style scheme.
